Chapter 14: Justin

I bent over on the beach, panting for breath after swimming back and forth in the cove. Tentacool was in just about the same shape in the water next to me. The exercise was the same as it had been the past five times, except this time Blue said: "Very good." I had no idea why he chose to praise us now instead of all the other times before. We hadn't done anything differently. He answered my confused look with a gesture toward Tentacool. I looked over, and he was glowing, slowly changing and expanding.

"It's evolving into Tentacruel." Blue explained. "Now don't cry, it's still the same Pokémon, it's just stronger and bigger."

I looked at him again, with the same puzzled glance. "Why would I be crying?"

He sighed. "I've had it happen before. And don't go to sleep either, we still have training time to get Tentacruel used to his new changes."

"I can see why someone would want to do that." I said, yawning. "But don't tell me, it's happened before?"

"Yes. With the same person, my first official student. What a good trainer she became." A hint of a smile showed on his face. "But when I first took her on… well, she was the worst I've ever had. Even the people from your world aren't usually as clueless as she was."

I laughed, ribs aching with every breath. "Well, I guess that's the most praise than I've ever gotten from you in one single day. How about I stretch my luck and ask for a break?"

"No." He turned away, to go back to his watching place.

Laughing carefully this time, I rubbed Tentacruel's head. "It was too much to hope for anyway, huh. Ready for another swim?"

It floated out into the water, so I took that as a yes. "Okay, then! Come on Swablu, let's have you fly with us!"

"Remember Justin," said Blue. "We set out tomorrow at sunrise, so train as hard as you can now." His eyes said: I'll help you, but you'd better help yourself first.

I smiled and pushed off the sand of the beach into deeper water.

The next afternoon, we landed in a seaside town, Pallet Town, where Blue had apparently been born in, and made our way north to a Viridian City. I was reunited with Ace, but when I asked about Maria, she didn't know. Red smiled at Blue, saying "Don't worry, Yellow's always late."
