Side Story 1
~Early Days~
Kuroko and Kagami
One could say that Kagami Taiga was the exact opposite of Kuroko Tetsuya. Even Kuroko himself realized it. Kuroko was almost invisible, especially with his thin presence. But Kagami, well Kagami always attracted a lot of attention. First was his height, towering 190 cm and well built, emitting an overwhelming aura that made people took a step back when their eyes met. The first time he introduced himself in the class, he gave the intensity of a wild tiger.
Kuroko couldn't help but hear the girls and guys talking about Kagami.
"He was scary…"
"I don't even dare to talk to him…"
"He probably would beat you up into a pulp…"
Besides, people tried to avoid him. No one liked to be on the bad side of Kagami Taiga, and yet, no one dared to befriend him either. Kagami Enterprises was already well-known as one of the largest multinational conglomerates especially in America and Europe (and now started to take over Asia), and with some other small companies under their belts. One could say that Kagami Taiga was one of the elites of the elites. The only downside was… well, he was scary.
At first, no one dared to approach him.
Kuroko Tetsuya came from a wealthy family. His father was a famous best-selling author and the owner of major publishing company. He wasn't stand out like his classmates. He was quiet, people rarely noticed his presence. He had attended Teikou Academy since elementary school, and yet he never attracted any attention. In the middle school he started to befriend more people. Aomine, Momoi, Akashi, Kise, Midorima, and Murasakibara… Kuroko Tetsuya still had little to none presence, yet he wasn't alone anymore. He had his friends.
In the classroom, Kuroko sat right behind Kagami, next to the window. His lack of presence made it easier for him to observe his classmates; how people tend to avoid Kagami, living the lonely red head just by himself. Kuroko didn't care much at first.
And then Akashi became student council President and Midorima became Vice-President. And before he knew it, Kuroko became the Head of Cultural and Academic Division of Student Council and he was busy with his new duty. Akashi then threw in another of his idea of making Teikou Academy Host Club. No one question him, and Kuroko was swept along with the flow.
After that, Kuroko didn't pay as much attention to his classmate Kagami Taiga for awhile.
The host club was relatively new when finally Kuroko made a real contact with Kagami Taiga. It was in Home-Economic kitchen to be precise. Kuroko had to pick up Cooking Club's activity report, and he was surprised to see someone was in the Home-Economic kitchen. No one supposed to use the room without supervision, and yet, there was only one person the kitchen. From the doorway, Kuroko could see a tall figure, clad in dark blue apron and with bangs tide up with rubber band looking busy kneading what looked like somekind of dough. It took Kuroko awhile to recognize the figure as his classmate Kagami Taiga.
"Kagami-kun?" carefully Kuroko called his name.
Kagami stopped his motion and looked at the figure stood in the doorway.
Kuroko looked back, his face as expressionless as usual while Kagami's face gave a slight pink hue. His hands were still knuckle deep in the dough.
"Wh—H-how long you've been there?!" Kagami asked loudly.
"I've been here for awhile," Kuroko said calmly as he stepped into the kitchen. Kagami took a step back, keeping the kitchen table between them. "What are you doing here, Kagami-kun?"
"Making… Baguette…" Kagami murmured as he continued to knead the dough. Kuroko didn't say anything as he just stood there and watched Kagami's movement in amazement. Even though Kagami had an imposing figure with his height and look, somehow he looked comfortable in the kitchen; clad in an apron, bangs tied up with rubber band, showing his forehead, with flour covered his hands, some on his face, hair, and apron.
Kuroko didn't know how long he stood there watching and Kagami didn't seem to be bothered by his presence. Before he knew it, Kagami had done with the baguettes and cut it into shorter piece. In several minutes, there were already eight baguette sandwiches on the plate. Kagami put the plate in front of Kuroko.
"You can have some…" Kagami said.
"Thank you…" Kuroko said.
Kuroko looked at the plate. The sandwiches were sure looked appetizing. Kuroko took one and tried it. The taste exploded in his mouth. Kuroko was sure he never tasted baguette sandwich as good as this one before. Not even the one that cooked by professional chef. He looked at Kagami's face as the other boy took a big bite of his own sandwich. The two ate in silence as they sat on the bench. Kuroko finished first and watched Kagami ate vigorously.
"It was very good, Kagami-kun. I don't think I've tasted a baguette sandwich this good," Kuroko said with a small smile on his face.
Kuroko saw the blush slowly spread on the red head's face when Kuroko complimented the food. The red head was lost for words, so he kept munching his sandwich while trying to hide his blushing face.
That was the time when Kuroko knew that Kagami Taiga was not as scary as people said he was.
Kuroko noticed he could always find Kagami in the Home Economic kitchen in free period though the red head didn't always cook something. Sometimes he was there for eating lunch. Kuroko always stopped and accompanied the red head. As days passed, without them realizing, they'd became closer. Kagami still blushing at Kuroko's blunt compliment, and yet he smiled brightly at them.
"Kagami-kun really loves cooking, huh?" Kuroko said. "You know that you couldn't use the kitchen without supervision…"
"I asked Mibuchi-senpai to let me use it from time to time. He gave me permission as long as I clean up after cooking. Sometimes I joined the cooking club in the kitchen," said Kagami. "I always enjoyed cooking even before I came to this school. It was soothing, and I like it when people seemed happy when they eat something that I've made."
Kuroko smiled softly at the taller boy. He couldn't help it but think about how cute Kagami was. People always said scary things about Kagami; about how he would beat up people into a pulp, his intimidating aura, and his family… But Kuroko saw Kagami in a new light now. Despite his looks, Kagami was kind-hearted, awkward, and honest. He was the kind of guy who wore his heart on his sleeves and Kuroko could always read him well. Kuroko could see how lonely Kagami was when he moved to Japan. In school, no one dared to talk to him, so Kagami mostly spent his time alone in the kitchen or in his dorm room. He rarely ate in the dining hall, and since no one seemed wanted to befriend him, he just avoided people in general.
At least until Kuroko came.
"Aren't you supposed to be in the student council room, now?" Kagami asked as he looked up at the clock in the kitchen.
"Ah, right," Kuroko said as he stood up.
"Wait a moment," Kagami walked up to the refrigerator and pulled out a glass container. "You can bring this and share it with the other student council members."
Kuroko looked down at the glass container. Ah, tiramisu cake. He remembered Kagami made it yesterday and put it in the refrigerator. Kuroko smiled and nodded at the red head.
"Thank you very much, Kagami-kun…" Kuroko said.
"It should be me who thanked you, being my friend and all…" Kagami blushed when he realized how embarrassing his words sounded. Kagami Taiga was always honest with his feeling.
An angel, Kuroko thought as he walked up to the student council room.
"Kurokocchi seemed always showed up with a new snack for us every day-ssu~" Kise said as he cut up the tiramisu cake and put it on the plate.
"Where do you get all these snacks anyway?" Aomine asked as he took a large bite of the cake. It was too good to be true. "Did your chef deliver it or something?"
"No. A friend of mine made it," said Kuroko as he saw the entire student council members tried Kagami's cake. Akashi and Midorima looked pleased, Kise was crying a happy tears as he ate his share. Aomine was on his third plate already while Murasakibara was on his fourth and didn't show any sign of stopping soon.
"Friend?" Aomine asked. He couldn't recall anyone that could cook this good as Kuroko's friend, though he had heard rumors about Kuroko befriended the scary guy from his class. No chance in hell that guy could cook this good!
"Kurokocchi's friend? A girl?" Kise asked, full of curiosity.
"No. It's Kagami-kun," Kuroko said bluntly.
Everyone recognized the name. The tall guy from Kuroko's class. Of course, with rumors floating around him, mostly about how scary he was, it was impossible to not recognize the infamous name. Akashi for one already got his eyes on Kagami Taiga since he heard the heir of one of the world's influential company would attend the same school as he was.
"The scary guy from your class?" Kise asked.
"Kagami-kun is not scary as people said. He was the kindest person I ever met," said Kuroko with a soft smile on his face. "An angel."
The members could only look at Kuroko with disbelief. An angel? That person some people dubbed as wild tiger? Maybe Kuroko finally loose a screw this time and he couldn't think right. Did Kuroko just say that guy could cook this good? Akashi's smirked got wider when he heard this. He finished his tiramisu cake before turned to Kuroko.
"Tetsuya, bring me to this Kagami Taiga."
"Kagamicchi…! Tell him to stop stealing my cake~!"
"Kaga-chin, do you have more cake?"
"Bakagami—"
"Kagami—"
"Taiga—"
Kagami Taiga smiled as he cut up more cakes for the host club members. He could always heard different versions of his name being called in friendly manner. Now gone the negative rumors about him, and Kagami was grateful about it, though he had far from normal high school time, he still enjoyed it with his friends.
Yes, friends. It had a nice ring, right?
"Kagami-kun seems happy about something," Kuroko said as he sat himself beside Kagami and leant to the taller boy's side, letting his head rested on Kagami's shoulder. "Is something happened?"
"Hm? Nah… I'm just happy," Kagami grinned brightly at Kuroko. "Thanks, Kuroko."
Because now, he was not alone anymore.
