Shane sighed as she sat down nervously on her bed. She could hear Dex throwing things around in his room, she assumed he was 'packing' also known as 'throw everything in two boxes and seal them'. After a few moments she stood up and drug the duffle bags and suitcases out of her closet. Thankfully she had very few possessions since she had moved around like crazy when she was using. She finished packing her clothes into the duffle bags before turning and sweeping everything off her dresser into the suitcase. When she was finished her room was bare, like it was when they moved in.
They weren't bringing the furniture, that was a given considering it had already been there when they moved in. The small house was run down, almost like garage not a house, but it had been home to her. She hoped for a moment that wherever they were going was nicer, or closer to her job since Dex was the only one with car, one that he had been given when he found his new 'job'. When she was finished mulling over the past Shane grabbed the two bags and suitcase and sat them outside her door before walking to the living room closet. She grabbed the box that had been left in there for if they had to move again.
Dex was paranoid so he always had her keep their moving supplies in easy accessible places. Shane began placing the electronics that were near the TV, as well as the photos off the walls inside the box before she grabbed another box and moved to the kitchen and dining room. Shane watched as Dex exited the bathroom with another duffle bag that obviously had their bathroom items in it. He gave her a sad smile but avoided eye contact as he placed the boxes and bags next to the door before grabbing her things as well before carrying them to his van outside.
With a small sigh Shane followed suit, grabbing what she could and throwing it in the van. She watched curiously as he placed several locked briefcases in the van as well that he had obviously hidden in his room. He also had several bulky duffle bags that made a loud thud as he sat them down. Shane shook the thoughts of what they could contain out of her head as she climbed into the passenger seat. With the van facing the road she could easily make out another van at the end of the street, it was purple and she could see two men sitting in the front seats with clown masks.
Shane scooted down in her seat nervously as they seemed to stare at her. She was so focused on the men she jumped when she heard Dex open his door and climb in the van.
"You got everything right? We aren't coming back Shane, this place probably won't even be here tomorrow..."Dex's voice trailed off as Shane nodded, unable to form words. Dex returned her nod as he buckled his seat belt, starting the car and turning on the headlights. Shane watched curiously as he looked at the van she had noticed earlier. Shane almost missed the nod he gave the two as he pulled away from the place she had called home since she got clean.
Dex didn't say a word during the drive, as Shane stared out the window trying to figure out where they were going. After a drive that seemed to last longer than thirty minutes Dex pulled into an apartment complex that Shane was sure blew their budget all to hell. Shane felt uncomfortable just looking at the building with the large windows and sleek modern exterior. She went to speak when Dex simply shook his head before he pulled into a parking spot towards the entrance of the building.
Shane watched as three men walked out, dressed from head to toe in black. They smiled at Dex as he jumped out of the van and opened the doors. The men began helping Dex grab the bags as they looked at Shane warily.
"So you finally decided you can live with the rest of us huh?" One man spoke, laughing when he finished his sentence.
"Yeah I heard Jo-"Dex glared at the man as if he was about to spill some secret before Dex slammed the door shut to the van. Shane could see Dex's mouth moving but had no hopes of hearing what he was saying. With another sigh Shane climber out of the van and stood awkwardly by Dex as the men smiled at her.
"You're Shane? Dexie's little sister. Glad to finally meet the one who shares DNA with this sorry sack of shit." The one who spoke earlier laughed as Dex punched him the arm before he began ushering Shane into the building.
After all their things were placed in the apartment Shane began walking around. The apartment was lavishly furnished with modern décor. She continued to stare as she found the apartment was a total of two rooms and two and a half baths with a kitchen, dining area, living room and small office space. Shane picked her room and began unpacking her things as she stared out the large windows that she had noticed covering most of the building.
When she was almost done placing her things on shelves she heard voiced coming from Dex's room. She could tell there was another person with Dex and they were obviously arguing. Shane quietly snuck out of her room to peer around the corner into Dex's room. She could see Dex sitting on his bed, his hands grasping his hair in frustration.
"Are you fucking kidding me J? You can't possibly think I would be okay with this." Dex's voice was low, but Shane could see the anger behind his eyes.
"You don't have a choice Dexter boy. If you want you and little Shannah to stay alive you're going to have to be a team player." Shane could feel the hairon the back of her neck stand up as she recognized the clown like voice that came from the man she couldn't see.
Dex jumped up, staring at the part of the room Shane couldn't see.
"Don't you dare threaten her. She isn't part of this J. She isn't part of your stupid gang. She's just here until she can get better. I don't want her in this life."
Shane almost gasped as the man her brother had been talking to came into view and grabbed Dex by the collar. Shane felt her blood run cold as the Joker came eye to eye with Dex.
"She's always been a part of this Dexter whether she knows it or now." His voice was low and threatening and it made Shane's stomach turn as she waited for Dex's response.
After a few moments Dex averted his eyes, glancing towards his door. His eyes widened as he noticed Shane peering through the door. After a few moments the Joker's eyes left Dex's face and followed his line of sight, smiling when he saw Shane standing there unmoving.
"tsk tsk tsk" The Joker almost clicked his tongue as he pulled Dex's door open more to allow him to see Shane completely. "Spying on private conversations isn't nice doll." The Joker smirked as he saw how Shane refused to move, her fear quickly turning to anger.
"Why are you here?" Shane's voice was slightly shaky as she stared at the man she had seen on TV terrorizing her city.
"Well that isn't the way to talk to the man who pays your bills doll. This is my building, maybe you should be asking why you're here, not why I'm on my own property talking to my property." He laughed as he said the last word, hearing Dex growl.
"Property?" Shane furrowed her brow as she tried to understand exactly what he was saying as the fear finally began to dissapate.
"Yes. I own this building as well as you and Dexie here." His clown like laugh echoed across the apartment as anger flared behind Shane's eyes.
"I'm no one's property, neither is Dex. If that's what this is about we will fucking leave. I don't need you, I don't need anyone." Shane ground her teeth as she stared at the man in front of her.
Before Shane could blink The Joker had snatched the front of her tank top and shoved her against the wall. Shane could feel that her feet were no longer on the floor as his other hand came up and grasped her neck, applying enough pressure to cause ice cold panic to replace the flames of anger behind her eyes.
"Watch it doll, you know nothing about how much I own you. If I go away my protection ngoes away. How long do you think it would take for Dex to be taken to prison? How long do you think it would take for him to be killed? What do you think my men would do to you if I took my protective order away? What do you think your old dealer would do if he wasn't scared shitless because of me? How would you survive being homelss? Huh?" Shane flinched as his face came so close they were almost touching.
Behind the pair Shane heard Dex sigh in worry and annoyance. "J she has a smart mouth, she's just angry. She didn't mean it, please..."His voice trailed off in a pleading tone as the Joker dropped Shane, she fell awkwardly and sat on the floor staring at the pair in front of her.
"Teach her some manners, before the next meeting. I want her there." He smirked as Dex shook his head.
"J, no-"
"I said I want her there." The Joker snapped as he turned and left, the door slamming behind him.
Shane sat on the floor catching her breath as she rubbed her neck, staring at the place the Joker had been standing.
"Go to bed Shane…you'll want to put ice on your neck, you'll have a bruise. I'll take you to work tomorrow." Dex sat on his bead his head in his hands as he waited for Shane to leave.
"but-" Shane began, trying to reason with him to get him to explain what the hell had happened.
"I said go the fuck to bed Shane!" Dex's voice echoed through the apartment causing Shane to flinch as she stood up and glared at him before turning and slamming his door before slamming her own and walking to her bathroom for a much needed shower.
As Shane walked in the bathroom she glanced in the mirror, noticing the bruise forming around her neck in the shape of a hand.
