Chapter 35:
-DMHG-
Immediately having exited the building Draco ran ahead for a hundred yards before coming up to a hedge border, he opted to turn right into what he soon realised was a maze. Pebbles crunched under his feet as he slowed to a brisk walk, in his heightened emotional state he seemed to be able to smell a woman's fragrance lingering in the air. Rosewood, lavender and a hint of raspberry.
He let the scent guide him through the maze and as he got closer to what he assumed was the epicentre he could hear two of his old female housemates speaking.
"- and he was furious" Pansy admitted
"I do not even want to imagine what he did after we went out after you" Daphne's voice sounded, followed closely by the snivelling of someone crying, which made Draco's heart ache just a tad more knowing it was Hermione.
Seconds before he stepped around the last corner he heard a question from Pansy that had him pausing in his stride, "Do you still have feelings for him?" Draco held his breath for the answer, "I think you need to tell Draco that then" 'Tell me what?' Draco thought. Clearly Hermione hadn't voiced her response, or it was so low he had missed it. "He has a right to know"
"Pans is right, you spent eleven years with him, Draco is a kind man he'll understand"
Unsure on what to do Draco turned to return to the party, or at least somewhere he could clear his head, but as he span his foot crunched loudly on a pebble causing Pansy's voice to sound out again, "Who's there?" Seconds later he had a lit wand pointing in his face, his Raven haired friend at the other end, "Oh Drake you scared me then" she held her free hand over her chest before signalling for him to follow her into the clearing in the middle of the maze.
Following his internal debate on whether or not to face Hermione he swallowed his pride and followed his old classmate determined to do what he came out for, and that was check on Hermione.
"What are you doing out here?" Daphne questioned when he didn't immediately say anything.
He looked between the two ex- Slytherin's before glancing towards the lone Gryffindor, "I came to see if Granger was alright" he signalled towards Hermione who was sat on the bench with his right hand causing Daphne the ever observant healer to notice the cut blood oozing slowly out of a cut near to his knuckles.
"What happened to your hand Draco?"
Knowing that mentioning something about hitting the idiot would most likely lead to more questions he kept quiet hiding the evidence of his fight behind his other hand as he bent down in front of Hermione, whose eyes had remained downcast, and had not once glanced in his direction. "You okay Granger?"
She nodded tersely, wiping roughly at her eyes with her arm, and at noticing she had missed a splodge of tear Draco reached up to use the pad of his thumb to remove the droplet from her face, and also tilt her head to look at him. It was this action that brought the state of his hand to Hermione's attention to which she gasped at seeing the damage, reaching for his other hand with her right to survey and compare the two. Before she could say anything about them Draco extracted them from her cooling hands letting them fall at his sides where no one could see them.
"If you are okay," he stood up to his full height, "I will head back inside" finally Hermione glanced up at him a look of shock and worry on her face as he turned his back to her.
She observed his form a slight hunch in his shoulders, she'd noticed the look in his eyes when he had made her look at him, there was a mixture of worry, apprehension, and hurt in his grey orbs. It didn't really take her much time to deduct that he had heard part of the conversation she had with Pansy and Daphne prior to his arrival.
"Yo-" Hermione's voice cracked slightly, causing her to cough, and swallow before starting again, "You heard what we were talking about before you came into the clearing, didn't you Draco?"
"Some of it yes" he clipped, unable to keep the edge out of his tone as he glanced at Pansy and Daphne.
Hermione sighed a shuddering breath as she glanced at Pansy and Daphne one at a time, a message passing between the three of them before Pansy was speaking again. "We will let the pair of you talk." With that said the duo made their own way out of the clearing leaving the would-be lovers to their own devices.
"You don't understand the whole conversation"
"I got the gist Granger, I am not stupid"
"I never said you were" she countered. Joining him on standing to her full height, though even in high heels she was still smaller than him. "I don't have feelings for Ron, it's you I have feelings for. You know I've felt the same way about you since we were students. Seeing him doesn't change that for me." She reached forward placing a hand on his shoulder, "Right now, I need the Draco who has been there for me this past week. I don't want this jealous, apprehensive, angry one stood in front of me" His shoulders lost some of the tenseness but still he did not turn around, "I want the Draco who I know has feelings for me as great as those I have for him" she choked on a tear, "I want the Draco who makes me feel young, wanted and loved for who I am."
Without giving Hermione a chance to react Draco span round his arms wrapping around her frame as he cradled her head to his strong chest. Allowing her to let out the remainder of her emotions.
Neither were sure how long they stayed stood up, Draco's arms protectively wrapped around her body, allowing her to fully let her emotions run free. As periodic sobs wracked her figure he tightened his hold willing the remainder out. Until there was nothing left and he was left rubbing comforting circles around her back, no matter how much his fingers rejected each and every movement they made.
"I am sorry" Draco finally voiced his only thought.
"What for?" Hermione asked perplexed.
"Everything" he felt her pull back slightly to look up at him. "I should have saw everything back then, I could… should have told you how I felt."
She smiled lightly, "But then we wouldn't have had our amazing children, wouldn't be here now"
"I would have a family with you" Draco announced determined.
"Let us not think about what could have been, let us focus on the now" she leaned her head back onto his chest before turning her head to the side so she could hear his heart beat in his chest underneath her ear. "But before we go back to the party-"
"We are going back in?"
Hermione nodded, "Yes, I'm not running away from this anymore, but I need you by my side." She felt his head nod above her as his nose came to rest on the crown of her head. "I need to know what happened to your hand Draco"
"I-" he let out a breath, "I hit your ex" he admitted swallowing as he waited for her to have a go at him.
She surprised him by laughing, "Did it feel good?"
He nodded, "I was just so angry, I just did what my body wanted. I think three hits was a bit over doing it, but then again may be it was not enough."
Turning around so her back was to his chest and his arms came around to her front Hermione reached for his hands again, and this time he let her examine the proof that he'd knocked a few shades out of her ex-husband.
She carefully ran her thumb over the edge of the knuckles of his right pausing slightly as he winced as a particular spot was more sensitive than the rest of the hand. "You need to fix your hands up Draco" she commentated as she looked at the other, "I'd do it but I didn't bring my wand with me"
"I was a bit more occupied when Blaise and Harry hauled me off your ex"
"Pre-occupied doing what?"
"You" he laughed lightly at his unintended innuendo, "I was worried about you"
"Thank you…" she paused turning back around, "Thank you for caring Draco"
He smiled slightly, rubbing her arms, "It's alright" he turned to look towards the maze clearing entrance, "We should probably head back inside, Rose will be worried about you"

Forty three minutes, it had been precisely forty three minutes since her mother had made a hasty escape into the gardens, followed closely by Mrs' Higgs and Zabini. It had been around forty one minutes since Mr Malfoy Jr had followed having punched her father a few times. To say Rose was scared and apprehensive was an understatement, she had battled against the need to go and see her Father's prone form as he lay on the ground cradling a bloodied face as she feared he'd ignore her. After all she had barely seen him in this whole week. She felt neglected in many ways. Abandoned in many others.
"Hey Rosie you okay?" Ever the perceptive to her feelings and emotions Amando Zabini stepped towards her where she had huddled in a corner all on her own. Save for her body guard Scorpius who had taken it upon himself to stand no more than three feet from her at any given point. Even after she had told him she wished to be left alone.
In answer to Amando's question she nodded her head, knowing that he wasn't convinced by the raising of his eyebrows as he stared at her glossed over eyes- but declined to say anything else about it.
"Amando buddy your Mum wants you to come and sit with us for some food" Blaise said as he walked over, "You to Scorp" he paused as he looked between his eldest son's sad expression and the person he was directing it to, "You to Rose- us Slytherins we stick together"
Glancing up anxiously biting on her lip Rose replied, "I'm not a Slytherin Sir"
"May be not, you are more likely to be a Gryffindor, but you are your Mother's daughter and she had enough Slytherin up here" at this point Blaise pointed to her head, "To be classed as one, she saved our arses enough times for you to be classed as one as well- that is if you want to be?" He extended his hand waiting for a handshake to which Rose looked reluctantly at, "I promise we won't bite" Taking his word Rose shook his hand before following Blaise over to where the majority of the Slytherins were sat, where he took it upon himself to introduce their guest to the others around the table.

By the time Hermione and Draco made their way back to the party it was time for food to be served, but that didn't stop Ginny from accosting Hermione as soon as she stepped over the threshold.
"Hermione I am so sorry!"
Hermione held up her hand, "It's okay Gin, we aren't married anymore, he can see whoever he wants" she glanced towards Draco, "It's time we both moved on" She turned back to Ginny, who now had Harry by her side, "Harry" she acknowledged as she gave him a greeting hug.
"I'm just so angry at him. How dare he! Mum is furious as well, if Malfoy hadn't hit him he'd have had a few other people gunning for him" she shook her head, "So again I apologise"
As the females were distracted by talking Harry leant in to Draco, "Thank you Malfoy" he extended his hand, "If you hadn't knocked him for seven I would have had to step in do so, which by the way he wants to press charges over, however I'm going to speak to Kingsley and sort everything out I'm sure he will back me up over it"
"You would do that for me?"
Draco noticed the brotherly concern radiating off the raven haired man as he glanced at Hermione, once upon a time he may have mistaken it for lust but not now, "She's like a Sister to me, I don't want anything to hurt her, if that means having you by her side, then by Merlin you are going to be by her side." Harry sighed as he looked back at the blond, "How is she holding up?"
"You know how she is she is strong, I think she just wants to see Rose and get the evening over with" After Draco finished speaking the men turned back to the women's conversation.
"So where is Rose?" Hermione queried looking between Harry and Ginny.
"She didn't want to sit with us when you left she was sat in the corner, Scorpius had a watchful eye over her but I've not seen her in a while"
"You mean my daughter is currently missing?" Hermione exasperated as she quickly took to scanning the room in the hopes of finding her daughter.
"Hermione?" Draco question lowly, turning her body and pointing to where his old housemates were sat, "She's sat next to Pansy"
"I need to make sure she's okay" Hermione announced leaving the Potter's where they were as she strode towards the snake pit, Draco hot on her heels.
As if sensing her mother's attention Rose looked up, before smiling and jumping off her chair and running towards her Mother's waiting arms, "I love you Mum" were her first words as she buried her face in the side of Hermione's neck.
"I love you to Rosie"
Draco leaving them to their little talk walked past the Mother-daughter pair towards his Son who glanced his way when he squeezed Scorpius' shoulder.
A chorus of greetings whipped round the table as people noticed Draco stood there, he gave a single greeting to them all before saying, "I was thinking a massive sleep over at the Manor house tonight? And yes children are allowed but in bed no later than ten o'clock"
Draco knew Hermione wouldn't want to be on her own, so took it upon himself to invite everyone he knew detested Weasel nearly as much as he and Hermione did.
Draco glanced towards Scorpius, "And yes Scorp all the children can sleep in your tree house if you want" to which Scorpius' smile brightened as he gave his father his thanks.
A/N: Please let me know what you think. But more importantly I hope you enjoyed it.
