A/N: As I've said in the last chapter, this chapter is a mega time jump to PROM. In case you must know, the notes Allie gave Kendall can be found in chapter 20… Or some parts of it. I'm not going to get too into it as it'll spoil what I have in store for Kendall in these next 2 chapters or so :p
Anyway, on with the reading!
The Skype video call I had on was buzzing with the chitchatting of my friends as we all got ready for one of the most important nights of our teenage lives. I grinned as the girls, both at Camille's house, argued about 'how much makeup is too much makeup', both holding up a brush threateningly.
… Or as threatening as they can be wearing sleek, sleeveless gowns.
The rest of us, however, were in our own houses, getting ready for prom by ourselves. James told me he was going to come pick me up at 7, wanting to do this the ridiculously traditional way, which meant that he wasn't on the Skype call with the rest of us. I watched Logan and Carlos make googly eyes at their cameras, obviously looking at each other's faces on screen, and smiled. Despite the problems we have faced, everyone was ecstatic to be going to prom.
A celebration of having survived another year since the last one.
I pulled on the jacket of the suit and stared at my reflection in the chat as I straightened the collar and smoothened out the fabric. The orange and blue logo caught my eye and I carefully thumbed at it. The colors seem to shine brighter than usual, almost making it look crystal-like.
"Oi, Ken, you still alive and well?"
I jerked my head up and looked at the screen, where Lucy's dolled up face was sneering at me. Her eyes were lined with black eyeliner, the tips curved upwards. Her long, thin face had a sharper look; contouring, as Camille had once told me. Her hair was pulled back into a loose bun, stray red highlights cupping the sides of her head and her fringe now a mess of curls swept to the side of her forehead. From her seated position, all I could see of her prom outfit was the top half of a pure black strapless dress covered in glittering white crystals.
"You look good," I blurted, my head tilted as I studied the rest of my friends. "Damn, all of you look magnificent."
"And you look like you need to get shagged," Lucy retorted, sliding to the left to avoid her girlfriend's predictable hand. She laced her fingers with Camille's and raised an eyebrow at the screen. "Really, though. Loosen up a bit. It's prom night! And you know what everyone does on prom night… Well, when we don't have sticks up our asses."
Color rushed up to my cheeks at Lucy's implication. Just as I was about to make up a retort, my bedroom door swung open and Katie came bounding in. "James is downstairs!" she squealed, bouncing on the balls of her feet. Her lips were split to the widest grin I've ever seen, cheeks jiggling from her constant movement. Her fingers dug into my left sleeve. "Come onnnn! You have to see him!"
"Okay, Katie! Hold on!" I laughed, tugging my arm away from her tight grip. I turned to my laptop screen and nodded. "I'll see you guys in a bit!"
We all said our goodbyes before I logged out. I grabbed my phone and wallet, double checking that I had our tickets on me, and allowed my baby sister to drag me down the stairs, grabbing her fingers with mine. She chattered on and on, jumping from one topic to another, until I could barely keep up with our one-sided conversation. I nodded my head and masked my look of confusion with understanding every time she turned to look at me. I was watching her fondly when we walked up to the door, where I could hear my mother and boyfriend talking- or, well, Mum cooing and James laughing awkwardly.
The second I lifted my eyes away from the energetic teen in front of me, I froze. I remembered bringing the clothes back to James' and getting him to try them. For some reason, the red undershirt, which I figured was meant for him, suited me better and the blue, him.
Both of us were unsure on who placed the order for our suits but we did have our suspicions, seeing as our powers weren't a worldwide knowledge.
I wasn't complaining, however. The suit fitted James like a glove, making me lick my lips as waves of arousal washed through me. I did all I could not to drool at the sight of my lover's bulging muscles through the material and how his pants hugged his legs. The cloudy blue undershirt complimented his skin tone, drawing attention to his broad chest.
It took me a moment to realise that James had his bright hazel eyes fixed on me. As they travelled down the length of my body, the familiar tender gaze turned into hunger, his pupils dilating as they went up to my face.
The small smile he had morphed into a knowing smirk as he nodded towards me. The gesture caused Mum to stop talking and turn around, then cooing at me. She held up our old digital camera and immediately began snapping pictures of me, despite the fact that I was holding onto Katie's hand.
"Oh, Kendall! You look great!" she gushed, tears gathered in her eyes.
"Yeah, you clean up better than I thought you would."
I glared at my boyfriend, resisting the urge to raise a finger at him in front of my family. "Good to see your pants fit today."
"Kendall!"
I pouted and walked up to James, letting Katie stand by my mom, before wrapping my arms around him. His nose nuzzled into the side of my head. "You look really good, babe," he whispered, hugging me tight into his chest.
Both of us were softly smiling at one another when the inconspicuous sound of a camera whirring and the brightness of a flash went off near us. I nearly jumped out of my date's embrace but James held on to me and shook his head with a small chuckle. He spun me around and manhandled me into a typical prom picture position, with his arms around my waist, fingers stroking my sides calmingly. We allowed Mom to take as many pictures of us in several cheesy positions before she decided that she has had enough and told us that we still had a few minutes before our prom night started.
Then she continued on about safe sex, not drink driving, and such, and gave James a rundown of how severe his punishment would be if anything happened to me.
I tried to look nonchalant as the talk went on, fiddling with the little emblem on my collar again. It was amusing to see James squirm under Mama Knight's intense gaze but, to be honest, I would have been the same. Only the two of us know what really goes on behind closed doors.
By the time we were out of the house, we only had half an hour until everything started. The next surprise- which truly was a surprise; James' prom proposal had shot the other girls' & guys' expectations through the roof- was the black Audi r8 parked at my driveway. I froze halfway to it and turned to my boyfriend, who was casually strolling behind me. "Uh… Who's driving that?"
James fished out a small black remote and clicked on the button. The headlights flashed for a second and a loud beep echoed from the car before the brunet walked over to the driver's seat. "You coming or are you just going to stand there?"
I shook my head and gaped. I thought it was impossible but I think I've fallen further in love with this man. "Hold on! You can drive?"
He walked up to me with a smirk and leaned down to whisper in my ear, "Come on, baby, we can christen the backseat later if we're early."
Blood rushed south as color rose to my cheeks. A startled squeak left my lips when James effortlessly swept me off my feet, shouting our goodbyes to Mom, who was standing by the door with the fondest grin on her face. Katie was waving frantically in our direction. We laughed and waved back to the enthusiastic teenager before James dumped me in the passenger seat of his car.
He closed my door and jogged to the other side, once again saying farewell to my family, before moving out of the driveway.
Our ride over to school consisted of several innuendos, promises and teasing, along with some inappropriate groping. Halfway through, however, I was just enjoying the tender kisses my prom date laid on me at red lights.
We reached the parking lot nearest to the gym with a few minutes to spare and spotted the others by the door, probably looking out for one of our moms' cars to drop us off. James killed the engine and smirked, leaning over for one more kiss before we stepped out. Both of us could hear the crowd going silent as they spotted us, the couple with the most elaborate prom proposal anyone has ever seen.
I walked towards my best friends, who were all imitating a fish out of water. Logan was stuttering over words, Carlos just looked like he wanted to ride around in the Audi, Lucy was very close to wanting to run up to the car and do something illegal, whereas Camille just seemed to be threading on a thin line between squealing and passing out.
Lucy, in her top black, bottom red frills dress, raised her hands to her hips and stared at me. "Why didn't you tell us James has his own car? All of us got cabs over," she whined, an almost unbecoming attitude coming from the rocker chic of our group.
I shrugged. "I didn't know about it either," I replied honestly. "Heck, I didn't even know he had a license!"
I felt James' cold arm slinging around my waist and could guess the smug look he had on his face. "Well, come on guys. We didn't get those prom tickets to stand outside and chatter on about my secret driving skills."
Somehow, the reminder that the loud music was coming from a celebration for us got the gang moving. They snapped out of their shock and all turned to go into the gym, along with some of the other students. I was about to follow them when James tugged me back.
Confused, I turned to look at him, a question ready at the tip of my tongue. He grabbed my hand and slid a small piece of metal onto my ring finger.
"Is this another proposal?" I teased, still a little baffled by his actions. "We're a little too young, don't you think?"
When he finally released my finger, all I could do was stare at the ring blankly. There was a small honey orange with little flecks of pink gem in the middle of it, the only thing making it seem fancy despite the clean and simple design of it. I tilted my head up and narrowed my eyes.
"It's a topaz. It's said to protect, heal and dispel enchantment on the wearer," the brunet explained, running a hand through his slicked back hair. "It's also said to be a November birthstone. I figured I needed a gift for you for this special occasion."
Heat rose to my cheeks as color bloomed on them, smiling shyly. I looked down at the jewellery, something I was unaccustomed to wearing, and admired it. "Thank you," I whispered, in awe with every card James had pulled for tonight. I pulled his face close to mine and kissed him, tugging his bottom lip gently when I pulled back. "You are so getting laid tonight."
James smirked. "I was under the impression that I would get you in bed regardless," he said haughtily, but burst into laughter when he caught me rolling my eyes. His features softened. "Just wear this for me, yeah? One of the many presents you'll be receiving from me. Let's face it, I'll never let you go."
Even after Electrike's warning? I wanted to ask. However, seeing the calm, happy look on my boyfriend's face was enough to force me to bite my tongue. We didn't know how true those notes were; we didn't know how long I had before the ritual was completed. I was willing to throw caution to the wind, if just for tonight. I just want to spend time with James before my soul gets tossed into Hell.
"Let's go in. The others are probably on the dance floor by now," I teased, forcing myself to smile despite the heaviness resting on my heart.
The punch in my hand grew warmer as the night went on. Music was blaring, echoing off the walls of the overly decorated school gym, and students were dancing, hiding in the corner to make out or just standing around with food and drinks.
A part of me wanted to let go of all inhibitions, to join in the fun with my best friends and boyfriend, but something was holding me back. I stood by one of the side doors, leaning against the wall, and silently watched Camille and Lucy dance, the brunette's bright pink chiffon dress twirling with the other's frilly black one. Right next to them were Carlos and Logan, both in matching dark blue suits with white undershirts, with their arms wrapped around each other's waists and foreheads touching. From where I was, it looked really sweet and romantic, seeing them sway along with the slow song playing, whereas Lucy and Camille looked adorable and attracting a lot of horny, perverted male attention. Ah, lesbian love. Always leaves a lot to a guy's imagination.
I suppose it didn't help that Camille's dress had a slit up to the thigh, which led to her girlfriend constantly trying to run her hands up the brunette's legs.
James was dancing, although it was with one of the girls from our class who came without a date. Ever the gentleman, that's my boyfriend. I couldn't bring myself to be jealous either. Somehow, I was confident that he was mine, just like how I am his.
As the song ended, they parted ways; the girl walking back to her table of friends while James headed towards me. I smiled and wrapped my arms around his waist when he got closer, burying my face into his shoulder.
"Had fun?" I uttered in his ear, getting as close as possible so he could hear me over the ruckus in the background.
James pulled back, his hazel eyes shining when a familiar song began playing. "Come on, dance with me."
I laughed when he dragged me to the dancefloor, happy even though I was refusing to move too much and just swayed from side to side.
All this talk about being in love, I could never get into the party. Now I understand only because you show me the way.
I felt a little weight lift off my chest as I snuggled into my lover's warmth, content to let him lead. He rested his cheek on the top of my head and held me tighter, ignoring the murmurs around us. However, as the song neared the end, I felt James' weight begin to sag onto me. I lifted my head from his shoulder and felt my heart stutter to a stop.
His usually tanned skin was pale and clammy, and, as soon as I stepped out of his arms, the tall, hazel-eyed brunette collapsed. His hands, seconds ago was a comfortable weight around my waist, clutched at his hair and his face scrunched up. Several gasps came from the crowd behind me and, it was then I realised, James had begun to grow.
He was turning into Blood Eyes. In front of every single student of our school.
"J-James?" My voice was rising in panic, and I felt Electrike trying to push himself to the front of my mind. Stop it! I need to.. I need to do something!
'Shut up and let me forth! Something's wrong. I think he feels it too. Something's coming!'
I was jolted out of the conversation in my head by a strong, almost-crushing grip on my wrist. James' blood red eyes were in front of my face and he was shaking, cringing from holding back the pain. His suit was stretched to its limit, the threads at the arms nearly coming undone.
In an instant, his eyes shot up to glare at the space behind me. The gasps and murmurs were slowly fading away and everyone was inching slowly to the exits. James's grip shifted to my elbow and tugged me backwards, for some reason using himself as a barrier between myself and whatever it was he thought of as a threat.
"Kendall," he said, his voice rough and low as it mixed with Blood Eyes' appearance. "When I tell you to run, do it. Run as far as you can. Go back to mine, find Allie and lock the doors. Hide somewhere, anywhere, protect yourselves until I come back. You understand?"
Startled, I tried to pull away. "James? What-"
Immediately, everyone began screaming as the door of the gym burst into pieces. Debris flew over our heads and, out of nowhere, the sound of rolling thunder roared in the background. I only had a moment to glimpse over my boyfriend's shoulder before he shifted and shoved me further back.
"Kendall, run! Remember what I told you!"
Even if I wanted to stay, the crowd running for the all the doors promptly swallowed me whole. I wonder how James wanted me to save Allie, however.
Because she was the insane-looking blonde kicking up a storm amongst the allies of her father.
A/N: YES, I USED CONFETTI FALLING (again). The second I heard it, I knew I wanted Confetti Falling to be the song for these two lovebirds. I'll be uploading the pictures of Camille & Lucy's dress on my tumblr! You can find the link in my profile bio.
Thank you so much for still being here & reading this! I hope you guys liked this chapter. It took a lot of talking to myself to get this done, but it's here! I missed the joy of writing so much.
I'm very close to the end with this fic. I won't make another sequel (this one was almost a bad idea. I nearly abandoned this D:). Probably little oneshots referencing this. Kinda like the concept of it xD
Hope you guys enjoyed! Don't forget to leave a review :3
