2 weeks later
"Dude so when are you going to ask her?" Wally said eagerly to me.
"Tonight! I'm taking her to a fancy dinner and thats when I'm going to pop the question."
"Wow man, I cant believe this. You are taking a huge step."
"Yeah I know, but I love her and I'm ready."
"I get to be your best man right?" Wally asked.
"Of course!" I replied.
"Well lets celebrate. I got some cold beer in the fridge."
"She hasn't said yes yet Wally."
"She's going to say yes." Wally replied and we went to the kitchen and cheered with a drink in our hands.
At the mall
"So when are you going to tell him?" Jinx asked Rachel.
"Tonight! He asked me to meet him at this fancy dinner place so I thought it would be perfect
to tell him then." Rachel explained.
"I am surprised he hasn't noticed. I mean you are eating every second of the day and you
don't even where jeans anymore."
"Men are sometimes oblivious to the obvious." Rachel stated.
"Have you gone to the Doctors yet? Do you know what your having? I'm going to be the godmother right?"
"Oh my gosh Jinx slow down and calm down. No I havent gone, I want to go with Jason, and its to early, and of course you will be the godmother."
"Sorry I am just so excited! You are having a baby! Hey what is the professor going to say when he finds out?"
"I have no idea. He will probably rant about me being 19 and having a baby, but I mean I'll be 20 in a couple weeks."
"Oh yeah! Your birthday, all this baby talk I almost forgot."
"Well we're going to have to talk birthday later I have to go get ready for tonight." Rachel said and her and Jinx left the mall.
At the apartment
I was at home getting ready for tonight and then my phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hey Jason its Carl."
"What do you want." I said bluntly.
"I want you to do one last heist.." I didn't answer. "Come on, one last heist, you have to admit you miss it... you miss Red X." I didn't say anything as he referred to me as my old alias, I just kept listening. "Listen Jason it will be my last and final request and I will leave you alone forever. Theres a truck delivering diamonds at the jewelry store on 34th street at 8' o'clock. I just want you to go and steal a couple and get out. It will be simple quick and easy."
"I have dinner with Rachel then and I can't miss it."
"I'm sure if you're a couple minutes late she will understand." Carl replied. I took a deep breath.
"Okay." And I hung up the phone. I looked at the clock at it was already 7:30. I left Rachel a note to meet at the restaurant and that I will be a few minutes late, and I put my Red X suit on for one last time.
8:15 at the restaurant.
I ran in the restaurant Looking for Rachel and I saw her looking amazing as always. She waved me over to the table in the back.
"Sorry for being late, Wally and I got caught up in some stuff."
"It's okay, so I have something to tell you." She said to me blushing.
"Really? I have something to tell you too, but lets order first." The waitress came by and took our orders. Rachel got spaghetti and I got the steak. Our dinner was quite romantic with classic music playing in the background and candles lit on the table. We were surround by only a couple tables, but they just quietly talked amongst themselves. "So what did you want to ask me? Rachel said. I cleared my throat and began my speech that I've been practicing to myself while robbing the diamond truck. "I love that you get cold when it's 81 degrees out. I love that your favorite food is pancakes and sandwiches. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."
"Jason." She said gasping a little knowing where this was going.
"Rachel I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you." Thats when I got out of my seat and knelt down on one knee next to her. All the tables around us looked at us, the perfect couple in awe, except one. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Carl grinning evilly at me, I was taken aback by this. Why was he here, I asked myself. And before I could put all the pieces together and before I could ask Rachel to marry me Carl did the most unexpected thing.
"Red X did what? Red X stole diamonds from a truck! He has been in hiding for how long and now decides to come out. Weird."
"What?" Rachel said confused turning to Carl's back who was pretending to be on the phone.
Then she turned back to me with tears flooding her eyes. "You..you.. you lied..."
"No Rachel. Please listen to me. Its a trick. I love you."
"That's why you were late." She said disgusted. I started to panic and I was still kneeling on the ground.
"Rachel will you marry me?" I spit out fast.
"Are you seriously asking me that right now? You think that you can fix what you did. You lied. What did you think, you can have sex with me and then become Red X again! Huh?! Is that it?
"Shhh Rachel calm down thats not it at all." I said standing up coming to her side and trying to calm her. I tried to hold her hand but she swung her hand away.
"Get away from me." I held my hands up in defense but now I was angry.
"Okay." I nodded my head fast in anger. "If thats how you want it to be." I put the ring back in my pocket and flung a credit card on the table. "You stay and finish your food I'm gonna go for a walk. I will call a cab for you, don't walk home. I'll see you... I don't know i'll just see you later I guess." I walked off angrily.
"Jason." She said quietly sitting at the table with tears streaming down her face. Rachel sat at the table finishing her meal, and when she left the restaurant she saw the cab waiting for her that Jason called, but instead of getting into she stared at it for a second and turned and began walking down the street with a hand on her belly and tears on her cheeks.
