Dawn's POV
I awoke to the smell of fresh pancakes wafting into my room through the small crack under my door. My stomach gave a monstrous growl telling me it needed food so I rolled out of bed and shuffled into the bathroom stretching and yawning as I went. I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and took a quick five-minute shower. I wrapped a towel around myself and walked over to my closet to find something to wear for the day. I pulled out a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, a short-sleeved teal t-shirt with the words 'Bite Me' in bold black written across the chest, and a pair of comfortable black and white sneakers. Once I was dressed I made up my bed, combed my hair, and grabbed my cell from the bedside nightstand before taking off down the stairs.
"Morning Aunt Sue" I greeted as I skidded into the kitchen. Sue looked over her shoulder turning away from the breakfast she was cooking and smiled at me as I skidded to a halt.
"Morning sweetie, how'd you sleep last night?" she asked expertly flipping a pancake in the pan.
"One of the best nights I've had in a long time actually. Bruce cut patrol short last night since there was little activity. Apparently all of Gotham's criminals decided to go on vacation so I was able to get to bed earlier than usual."
"I'm glad to hear it, you deserved a break. I tried to stay up until you got home last night, but I accidentally fell asleep" she admitted sheepishly. She flipped the pancake one last time before sliding it on a plate and buttering it.
I walked over to the fridge and grabbed a glass of apple juice as she finished making breakfast. She split the food into two plates and placed them on the table as I sat in my chair. My mouth started to water at the sight of the food so I quickly grabbed a fork and some syrup before attacking it. Aunt Sue sat across from me and she ate her food and drank her coffee while reading the daily newspaper.
I've lived with Aunt Susan since I was seven years old after my parents died. She was my father's younger sister and she's been a resident of Gotham her entire life.
My father's family has lived here for generations, and because of this Sue feels a deep connection with the city and hates to see what it's become now a days. Her grandparents used to tell her and my father stories about a time where Gotham was a good place to live. A place where criminals and thugs weren't lurking around every corner and the justice system was fair and kind unlike the modern system we have now that's cruel and corrupt. It's always been a belief of hers that with the help of good people like Bruce Gotham will eventually return to the way it was before.
My father lived in Gotham City up until he met my mother. My mom was a multi generational Gotham resident as well and the two met in college during their time attending Gotham University. After they got married they moved to California were there were better job opportunities for them. They were the first members of their families to leave Gotham in years, but their relatives respected their decision and supported them in their move.
Susan Parker aka Aunt Sue, is a short and slim 33-year-old. Her head reaches up to about Bruce's shoulders and she has curves that fit her nicely. She has curly, shoulder length blond hair and rich chocolate-brown eyes. Overall she's a very pretty women but everyone always says that her best feature is her smile. Her smile is always genuine and bright and no matter what the situation it could always lift your spirits.
She's not a very muscular or athletic person, but she's developed small muscles in her arms and legs from her many years in the kitchen handling heavy equipment. She exercises regularly but not as much as I do, she does just enough to stay fit and health. Aunt Sue is without a doubt the best cook in the world. Wally and Barry love to visit just so Aunt Sue can cook for them and Iris enjoys it because then she gets a night off from having to cook enough food for two speedsters that each have a monstrous appetite.
Alfred's even complimented Sue on her cooking skills. Bruce, Dick, and Alfred come over often so Alfred can get a well deserved break. Aunt Sue loves to cook and doesn't mind when people come over for food. She's constantly telling me that anytime someone wants to come over they are always welcome to stop by. She's even brought home a couple homeless people to provide them with a decent meal and a bed to sleep in for the night. On these days Bruce always insists on staying close to the house just so he can keep a close eye on everything and make sure the person doesn't take advantage of Sue's hospitality.
Aunt Sue has built up a reputation in the city for doing good deeds like this for people all the time and because of this the people she's helped over the years have made sure everyone knows not to mess with her. Aunt Sue's house is practically untouchable for the common criminals just because no one would like it if someone messed with the only person left in the city willing to help the less fortunate without question. If anyone messed with her they would have a group of very angry street thugs to deal with.
Ironically she's been best friends with Bruce for years, even way before I came to live here and became Shade. She was his best friend until he left Gotham to study abroad and train. Unfortunately while he was away they lost touch with each other and drifted apart. When he finally returned to Gotham they rekindled their friendship and she was there when he first become Batman. She supported his decision in becoming a vigilante saying that there was no one better suited for the job of setting this city straight.
She knows that I'm Shade, Dick is Robin, Wally is KF, and that Barry is the Flash. She even knows the Justice League members and their secret ID's. When the League found out that Bruce actually had a friend who knew about his extra curricular activities and wasn't a superhero they pestered him into allowing them to meeting her. He was reluctant at first but was eventually persuaded by both parties to allow her to meet the League and everyone immediately loved her. Bruce will always be her favorite and best friend but she's become a big part of the entire Justice League's family. Like I said before, you'd be stupid to mess with her.
I've been asked multiple times if Bruce and Sue ever stepped over the line of friendship or if they liked each other romantically. Every time I'm asked that question it makes me want to laugh and cringe at the same time. Bruce and Sue basically have a sibling like relationship with each other, they love each other but it's like a brotherly-sisterly love. Bruce sees Sue as the younger sister he never had and likewise Sue sees Bruce as her slightly overprotective older brother. The mere thought of them being anything other that makes me shiver. Thats like me and Wally being in a romantic relationship, it would never happen because to see him as anything other than an older brother would just feel...wrong.
"That was delicious as usual Sue," I said licking my plate clean before using my powers to float it into the sink. I grabbed the small backpack from the couch that contained my extra Shade uniform before walking back over to Aunt Sue.
"Is it ok if I go over to Dick's house today? I asked "I was going to hang out with the gang by going to the movies and arcade."
The gang was the name Aunt Sue and I came up with for when we were talking about my main group of friends, which were Robin, Wally, and Sasha. We hung out so often that Aunt Sue started calling us the gang because we're always together.
She smiled and gave me a hug before kissing me on the top of the head. "Sure thats fine, but be careful during patrol tonight ok. I have to work late because of a party being hosted at the restaurant so your staying over Bruce's tonight. I already called him and he said it's fine if you spent the night."
I returned her hug eagerly, "Thanks...wait a minute...your going to walk home alone, at night, in Gotham...ARE YOU CRAZY!" I yelled looking at her like she'd grown two heads.
Her car broke down earlier in the week and we took it to the shop to get fixed, but while it was in the shop she refuses to rent a car because her job is only 10 minutes away. She didn't want to spend all that money on a car she would only use for a couple of days and only drive for a few minutes each day. She would rather wait for her car to get fixed and walk wherever she needed to go until then, " besides it's good exercise," was her constant reply when I ask her about it.
The idea of her walking around Gotham by herself after dark didn't sit very well with me, even if it wasn't that far of a walk. I knew first hand how bad Gotham gets after dark, and lets just say it's not pleasant, but when Sue puts her mind to something she's not easily persuaded otherwise.
"I can walk you home before I go on patrol," I offered.
She shook her head "No that won't be necessary dear I'm not going to be walking home alone anyways, just like you Bruce and Alfred didn't like the idea of me walking home alone when I called them earlier to see if you could stay over so Bruce offered...well more like demanded that he walk me home after work. Now if he's going to do that by silently lurking in the shadows as Batman or down on the ground with me as Bruce Wayne remains to be the million dollar question, but either way I'll be safe."
I sighed letting out a relieved breath I didn't even know I was holding "good, I'll make sure to thank him when I get to the house, but anyways I need to get going or I'm going to be late. Good luck with the party tonight!" I yelled running out of the door and locking it before beginning my walk towards the Wayne Manor.
Dick's house wasn't very far from mine so it only took me about 10 minutes to get there. I walked through the gates since I had the passcode and walked up to porch leading up to the front door. I knocked and Alfred opened the door on the third tap.
"Good morning Mistress Dawn" he greeted as I walked inside.
"Morning Alfred" I said giving him a hug.
"Master Bruce and Master Dick are down in the cave waiting for you," he said closing the door behind me with a soft thud.
"Thanks Alfred" I said as I took off towards the grandfather clock.
I flew down the steps of the batcave to see Bruce and Dick standing by the batcomputer in civilian clothes. "Hey guys" I called as I flew over to the computer.
"Morning Dawn" Bruce greeted typing away on the huge keyboard in front of him doing research on the new criminal organization we ran into a few days ago on patrol.
"Hey Dawn" Dick said giving me a small two fingered salute while he casually leaned against the desk beside the computer with his arms folded.
"Hey Bruce I wanted to thank you for offering, or as she put it, demanded that you walk Sue home tonight" I said giving him a side hug since he was in a chair.
Bruce grinned at the way Susan described his 'offer' to walk her home. Susan is a part of a very small group of people who Bruce actually considers family. Not just one of his multiple fake rich friends that he pretends to like just to keep up appearances, but a true friend that he can trust with his deepest darkest secrets and would still like him even if he was dirt poor. Susan was like the sister he never had and he wasn't just about to let her walk around Gotham by herself after dark, not if he could help it.
"I wouldn't call it demanded it was more like I...strongly insisted. Besides she knows she shouldn't be walking around Gotham after dark by herself anyways. She of all people knows how dangerous it can get after dark," he said evenly not moving his eyes away the files on the computer screen.
"Aunt Sue was planning on walking home alone? Did she forget she lives in Gotham?" Dick asked raising an eyebrow. Dick and Wally were basically like sons/nephews to Sue and just like me they called her Aunt Sue instead of Susan.
"Yeah she was, but are you really surprised. This is Aunt Sue we're talking about here, that woman is crazy and can be very headstrong when she wants to be," I said leaning against the desk next to him.
"Well, at least now we know where you get it from" Robin said sarcastically.
"Like you can talk Dick," I replied in the same sarcastic tone while giving him a playful nudge in the side.
Bruce turned from the computer and glared at me playfully.
"What...it's true," I said putting my hands up in a don't kill me way.
"Anyways, moving on, where's Wally," I asked Dick "I'm ready to have some fun and we still have to meet up with Sasha at the arcade. It's almost 10:00 and you know I hate being late."
As soon as the words left my mouth Wally came rushing down the stairs of the cave "I'm here, I'm here, I'm here" he yelled skidding to a stop before he ran into a chair by the computer.
"Then what are we waiting for, come on slow pokes we're wasting day light" I said to the boys as I took off towards the stairs.
"Bye Bruce, I'll see you later for patrol" I yelled as I exited the cave.
We walked up to the arcade 15 minutes later and saw my girl best friend Sasha casually leaning against the side of the building waiting for us. Sasha Winters is a year older then Dick and I making her 14 years old and she attends Gotham Academy as well. She has bright violet eyes, long wavy black hair that reaches down to about mid back with purple highlights mixed in, and she's average height for her age. She's graceful and athletic from being an elite dancer and volleyball player for years. She's tall, slim, and curvy, but doesn't flaunt her beauty like most of the girls at GA.
Today she's wearing a red halter top shirt with the words Shut up and Dance in white on the front, white shorts, and a pair of red sneakers. One of the things I loved about Sasha is that she's a very outgoing person and isn't afraid to tell you what's on her mind. She can be one of the nicest, most caring, and loyal people you'll ever meet, but make her angry or mess with her friends and she can become scarier then the Joker.
Just like Aunt Sue she knows all of our secret I.D's, even Wally, Barry's and Bruce's, though she doesn't know the Justice League's or the team's I.D's. Actually she wasn't even suppose to know Bruce's I.D, she found that out by accident, but when she found out she'd already known Bruce for years since she hangs out with Dick and I all the time, so he trusted her enough to keep her mouth shut. The two of us have been friends ever since I first moved to Gotham. Aunt Sue introduced us when I first got here since she's good friends with her parents cause they all work in the same restaurant.
"Well it sure took you guys long enough," she teased pushing herself off the wall and placed her hands on her hips.
"Well hello to you too Sasha" I said jokingly.
"Why hello my awesome, amazing, smart, beautiful, and very late best friend" she said using the same joking tone as me.
"Hey Skittles, how you been?" Wally asked draping an arm around her shoulder.
Sasha is in love with skittles and there is rarely a time when she doesn't have a packet with her so Wally gave her the nickname Skittles when we were younger. Sasha is like a sister to the three of us and Wally and Sasha love to tease and joke around with each other just like siblings.
"Eh same old same old, I was just left outside in the hot sun for over an hour waiting for your extra slow butt to get here, and I thought you were the one with super speed" she teased.
"We didn't take an hour Sasha we're only like 10 minutes late" Dick corrected as we got our coins and walked over to the games.
"Well it sure felt like an hour Wonder Boy, but whatever that doesn't matter anymore, let's go play some games!" she said running off to a racing game.
"Your just impatient and it's not wonder boy, it's BOY WONDER! Seriously how many times do I have to tell you that!" he whisper yelled as he ran after her. Wally and I laughed before running after them to start the day of fun.
We played in the arcade for over 4 hours before we decided to leave and see the latest action movie in theaters.
"That movie was so awesome!" Wally said as we left the theater.
"Yeah the main character was so cool, I wish I could fight like him. He was taking people out left and right and did you see the way he dodged all those bullets and still took down the bad guy during the gun fight," Sasha praised as she pretended to fight an invisible enemy and dodge invisible bullets.
I laughed at her silliness "I have to admit it was a good movie, one of the best I've seen in a long time, but I couldn't stand the main girl character. She was so annoying and useless the entire time. All she did the entire movie was make stupid decisions that got herself and others into trouble."
"Who cares if she was useless, she was hot! Plus that's why the awesome kick butt bullet dodging hero is there for in the first place, to come in and save the day in all his bullet dodging glory" Wally added.
I rolled my eyes but decided not to push the subject.
"I loved all the gadgets and cars he used...the cars where so beautiful" Dick said in an almost dreamlike state.
"Well I've had a lot of fun today guys, but it's getting late so I should start heading home before I miss curfew" Sasha said.
"We'll walk you home then" Dick said as we walked towards her house. Once we made sure Sasha got home safely and said a quick hello to her parents we turned around the corner and headed back towards the Wayne Manor. We hadn't been walking for very long when Dick's phone started ringing, he fished his phone out of his jean pocket and looked at the caller ID. It was Kaldur.
He put the call on speaker phone as we stopped and took a seat on a near by bench to hear what Kaldur had to say. Once we were situated Kaldur got straight to the point. He told us about his plan to go to Star City to convince Roy to join the team and wanted to know if we would join him.
"Kaldur, you didn't even need to ask, of course we'll come with you. Just say when and where and we will be there," I said speaking for the group.
"I got a tip that a man by the name of Brick is conducting a smuggling operation at the docks in Star City tonight. Since Green Arrow is away on a League mission I am positive Roy will show up to stop him. I suggest we suit up and meet at the Star City docks in an hour," Kaldur said.
"Got it, we'll see you in an hour Kaldur" Dick said before ending the call and stuffing his phone back into his pocket.
"Well, it looks like we have a mission" Wally said standing up from the bench.
"Finally! I get to kick some butt! Last night's patrol was so uneventful and I'm just itching to get some action. Actually now that I think about it I should probably be nervous since Gotham is never uneventful" I thought as we ran towards the house.
We ran into the Wayne Mansion and raced down to the batcave to change into our uniforms. Wally brought his uniform with him earlier this morning so he changed as well. We left a note for Bruce telling him where we were going and promised to be back before patrol. I typed in the coordinates for the zeta tube transport closest to the Star City docks while the boys jogged into the zeta tube. I pushed the button turning the zeta tube on and flew into the machine just as it activated and teleported us to Star City.
We flew/ ran down the alleys of the city avoiding local residents until we arrived at the docks and met up with Aqualad. We hid behind some crates and watched the scene unfold before us waiting for the perfect opportunity to reveal ourselves.
Speedy had already confronted Brick and was the first to start the fight. He shot an exploding arrow at Brick since the villain's skin was tough like Superboy's and wouldn't get badly hurt by the blast but the explosion did rip and tear the expensive suit he was wearing.
"Uhh! Do you know what I pay for a suit in my size?! Brick yelled turning to face his henchmen "scorch the earth boys" he ordered as they aimed their guns at Roy.
"And that would be our cue" Wally said before speeding off to knock the guns out of the hands of the men closest to him. Robin swung in on his grappling hook throwing batarangs at the remaining men knocking the guns out of their hands before disappearing back into the shadows.
I jumped out from behind the crates and started fighting the goons head on. They were inexperienced fighters and only used brute strength to try and overwhelm their opponent so I was easily able to knock them out and cuff them all to a pole off to the side. Once I had dealt with the hired muscle I turned to Brick as he thrust his hand into the floor and broke off a huge chunk of rock. He lifted it over his head and threw it at Speedy as he loaded an arrow and shot it at Brick. I lifted my hand stopping the rock before it hit Roy and swung it back at Brick. He punched the rock splitting it into small pieces once it was close enough. He cracked his knuckles and glared at me as I flew up to Aqualad and Speedy.
"The cave is perfect. It has everything the team will need." Aqualad said to Roy.
Robin jumped out of the shadows "for covert missions, you know, spy stuff."
Wally ran up the wall until he was standing beside Aqualad on the platform, "and wait until you see Superboy and Miss Martian, but I saw her first!"
I chuckled at KF's comment and turned to Roy. "We even got a new shooting range so you can practice on moving targets while they shoot real bullets and arrows back at you. There are multiple levels and you can even choose a simulation to make the room look like any place or scenario you want to train in, you'd love it," I said.
Our conversation was cut short however when Brick picked up another piece of rock and chucked it at us. Everyone jumped out-of-the-way as Aqualad cut the rock in half with his knife-shaped water bearers. I raised my hands commanding some of the water from the lake to rise and fly towards Brick. The water sailed through the air and wrapped around the giant man.
Brick tried to resist and break free but was unable to escape the water since it was continuously spinning around him getting faster and faster until it created an almost solid water wall around the man. I made the water fully surround him from the neck down and froze it trapping him to the floor.
Brick looked up and gave me a creepy grin "did you really think this ice could hold me little girl" he laughed as he broke free from the ice making it shatter into a million pieces. Shards of ice came flying towards me so I waved my hand suspending them in the air before melting them. I relinquished my power over the water and let it drop to the floor.
Speedy shot three exploding arrows at him making Brick stagger back a step or two but the arrows didn't do any serious damage. He smirked at Speedy arrogance flowing from him in waves "Tell Arrow he shouldn't send boys to do a man's job."
"Hey! There's a girl here too you know" I yelled taking offense to his comment. I lowered myself closer to the floor so he could see me more clearly. I folded my arms and scowled as he laughed and looked at me.
"Oh don't flatter yourself sweetie, the only thing you'd be useful for would be wrapped up in my sheets after you've finished satisfying me" Brick said smirking making me shiver in disgust. "Maybe once this is over with I can show you what it truly means to have a good time" he said suggestively taking a step closer to me.
"I think I'll pass, you're not really my type" I said trying to sound bored and uninterested.
I glared at him as he took a semi step forward so we were only about half a pool tables length away from each other.
"I think you'll find that I can be way more than you expected when it comes to that topic" he whispered making me take a step back. I didn't like where this conversation was going and I defenantly didn't like how close he was. I didn't really notice it before since I was too wrapped up in trying to come up with a smart reply to his comment but I defenantly noticed now.
I clenched my fists and floated away from him moving closer to the boys who were all giving Brick death glares.
"I know he didn't just suggest what I think he just suggested" Wally snarled as he clenched his fists tightly.
"I think he just did my friend" Aqualad growled trying to make it seem like he was still calm, but was failing terrible. The cocky grin and occasional lustful glances Brick was sending my way where starting to grate on his nerves.
"He gets within a mile of her and I'll kill him" Roy and Wally said simultaneously.
Brick just smirked happy that his words were affecting them before turning and winked at me.
"Perv" I whispered stepping closer to Robin to escape the man's piercing eyes. If looks could kill Brick would be miles beneath the ground from the glare he was receiving from Robin, this was the most upset I've seen Robin in a while. His whole body was shaking in anger and his teeth were grinding against each other clenched together so tightly that it seemed like they would crack and break at any moment. His right hand was inching towards his belt like he was having the urge to pull something out and throw it at Brick with all his might. All of his muscles were tense and even though he had a mask on everyone noticied the heated glare he was giving Brick. It was such a fierce glare that even Brick took a small step back surprised from the intensity.
Robin stepped in front of me so he was blocking me from Brick's view cutting off the uncomfortable gaze Brick was giving me. Aqualad, Roy, and Wally stepped over so they were standing beside Robin and gave Brick looks that could rival the all famous batglare.
"He tries anything and I'll personally introduce him to the true definition of pain" Robin growled.
Roy strung an arrow and scowled at Brick as he stood on the ground holding his arms out at his sides daring Roy to shoot him. I watched as Roy released the arrow shooting Brick right in the chest. Red foam sprung out of the arrow and started growing around Brick, he struggled trying to escape but the foam was to strong and the more he struggled the further he sunk beneath it. After about half a minute he was fully submerged in the foam and it hardened around him so he couldn't escape.
"Nice shot Roy" I complimented as he lowered his bow. No one but me noticed the small smile that flickered across his face for a half second before it became expressionless again.
"He deserved much worse" Robin muttered turning away from the red blob. I placed a hand on his shoulder calming him down slightly before he walked over to the wall in front of us.
"High-density polyurethane foam, nice" KF said impressed.
"So, Speedy, you in?" Robin asked casually leaning against the wall with his arms folded.
"Pass. I'm done letting Arrow and the League tell me what to do. I don't need a baby sitter or a clubhouse to hang out with the other kids. Your Junior Justice League is a joke, something to keep you busy and in your place. I don't want any part of it."
"What is with you and your attitude lately," I asked folding my arms in frustration.
"Look, I know you're angry with the League for not being completely honest with us, I get that, but come on Roy their superheroes and sometimes that requires them to keep certain secrets, even from us. You can't tell me you've never kept a secret from Arrow about something related to your hero life because I know you have. I was with you for a majority of the times you did something you knew you shouldn't be doing but got away with it because Ollie never found out. You can't stay angry forever Roy, it's not good for you. You can't just abandon your friends and family because of one mistake on their part," I reasoned walking up until I was right in front of him.
He glared down at me "So you don't care that the League lied and betrayed our trust."
"Of course I care Roy!" I snapped making him take a step back surprised by my sudden hostility. "I was just as angry as you were when I found out but unlike you I've moved on...we've moved on," I said pointing to Robin, Aqualad, and KF.
"I've forgiven, not forgotten, but forgiven. I'm not holding a stupid and pointless grudge against someone for a mistake they made in the past. People make mistakes Roy, it's a part of life. I think it's time you let go of your anger and just forgive them already. Don't waste your life being angry Roy, it won't solve anything, and trust me I say I know from personal experience that holding on to that anger will only bring you more pain."
I didn't wait to see what everyone's reaction was to my lecture before turning away from Speedy. "Robin I'll meet you at the cave for night patrol and I'll see you two tomorrow at the cave" I said looking at KF and Aqualad.
I walked to the end of the platform but stopped having one last thing to say "Roy just think about what I said ok. I've been where you're at right now and I know how it feels. Your feeling hurt, sad, angry, bitter, and betrayed all at the same time and I know it's hard to let that go and move on, but you have to. Don't do what I did Roy and let your anger run your life. In the end holding on to those feelings will only affect one person... and that's yourself."
I lifted off the platform and flew towards the zeta tubes to teleport back to Gotham holding back the tears that threatened to burst having reopened the emotional wounds I'd sealed away so many years ago. I was able to make it to the zeta tube transport and activate it before the fresh tears started rolling down my face.
Aww poor Dawn, I'll explain what she means by personal experience later in the story. The next chapter is going to be the rest of the Welcome to Happy Harbor episode and then I'll move on to drop zone. After those two chapters I will do one or two of my own plot developing chapters that go in-depth to explain Dawn's past. I hope you guys liked Sasha because you will be seeing more of her and her friendship with the group as the story develops. Please review and tell me how I'm doing or if you have any suggestions for me on how to improve my writing/story.
