Shade's POV
When I teleported back to the batcave I was greeted by Bruce who was already dressed in his Batman uniform. I wiped the tears from my eyes as I walked in the room hoping that Bruce didn't notice, but I knew that chance was slim to none. Bruce never misses details like this, especially when it comes to people he considers family. He watched as I wiped the last of the tears away while grumbling to myself softly. "Stupid Roy, stupid Brick, stupid mission" I muttered trying to keep my mind preoccupied so it wouldn't drift into the past.
"I take it your mission didn't go very well," Bruce inferred.
"No, it didn't" I told him curtly as I plopped down into a chair by the computer.
Bruce noticed the tears and stood up from his chair. He walked over and crouched down until we were at eye level with each other.
He tilted my head forcing me to look at him "What happened?" A sliver of his commanding Batman voice came through when he spoke which was a sign that I needed to answer him immediately, but instead I turned away and stayed quit.
It was at this exact moment that Robin teleported into the cave and briskly walked over to Bruce and I.
"You know you shouldn't have been so hard on him," he said as he walked to Bruce's side.
"He's acting like a child, he needed someone to knock some sense into him and if that required for him to hear the cold hard truth then so be it," I replied as I stood and crossed my arms defensively
"Now Roy will never join the team!" he yelled.
"Oh, so now it's my fault he's being childish and immature" I yelled back.
By this point we were both in each other's faces, neither of us wanting to be the first to let up their harsh glare.
"That's enough! We have a job to do so either pull yourselves together or I pull you from patrol," Bruce berated using his famous batglare to stare us down.
Robin and I continued to glare at each other but wisely remained silent. Bruce swung his cape as he turned and stalked over to his motorcycle in the corner of the room. Robin and I shuffled behind him and avoided eye contact with each other. We swung onto our bikes and took off into the city without uttering a word.
When we returned from patrol we'd taken down twenty mugger's, stopped a bank robbery, defeated The Penguin, and had another encounter with the new, but still nameless, organization running around Gotham. We stopped a group of them from getting their hands on a valuable piece of technology from Wayne facilities.
I parked my motorcycle in the corner of the cave and swung my leg over the bike to stand up once I'd brought it to a stop. Bruce walked over to the computer and started pulling up information on the piece of tech the mysterious new group tried to steal tonight.
I walked over to one of the three changing rooms in the cave and stripped out of my Shade uniform. I changed into a pair of white basketball shorts and a slightly big blue t-shirt. Once I'd finished getting dressed I walked out of the changing room and placed my hero uniform in its glass container. I have two Shade suits; one I keep in the batcave and the other I keep in my backpack just in case I need it while I'm out or at school.
I pressed the close button on the panel in the wall and the suit chambers slid back into the floor. I flew over to Bruce who was still staring at the computer screen studying our new enemy. His elbows were leaning against the desk in front of him while his chin was resting on his intertwined fingers. Knowing him he's probably going to stay down here studying until he has to get Aunt Sue from work.
"Night Bruce, I'm getting something to eat then heading up to my room," I said as I walked towards the exit.
I have my own designated room in the Wayne household. Whenever I sleep over I always stayed in the same room and since I sleep over so often it transformed from a guest room into my room. The Wayne manor has become like my second home or my home away from home.
"Night Dawn" Bruce answered as he continued to stare at the computer screen. I exited the cave and went up to the kitchen to grab something to eat.
"Hey Alfred do we have any pasta left over from last night," I asked as I walked over to the fridge.
"Yes we do Mistress Dawn. I had a feeling that you were going to want some when you returned so I went ahead and made some fresh rolls to go along with it," he said as he pulled the delicious looking rolls out of the oven.
I pulled the pasta out of the fridge and warmed it up in the microwave. I made two plates of food because I knew Dick would be hungry as well, even though we were mad at each other we still looked out for one another. "Alfred have I ever told you how much I love you."
"Everyday Mistress Dawn" Alfred answered laughing to himself softly as he buttered the rolls.
"Well good, cause you truly are amazing."
I took the plates from the microwave and walked over to the counter so Alfred could place a freshly buttered roll on each plate. Once the plates were stacked with food I flew over to the counter over looking the entire kitchen and placed the plates on the marble as Dick walked in.
"Hello Master Dick, Mistress Dawn already has a plate waiting for you and I just made fresh rolls for everyone" Alfred said to Dick as he sat down next to me in front of his plate.
"I know I say it all the time but I'm going to say it once again, Alfred you truly are amazing" Dick said to the man as he walked out of the kitchen. Once Alfred left the room Dick and I sat in an awkward silence as we ate our food. We sat with this uncomfortable tension until Dick got sick of the silence and started a conversation.
"Dawn I want to apologize for yelling at you earlier. I was so angry about Roy not joining the team that I took my anger and frustration out on you and that wasn't fair to you" he said looking down at the counter to avoid eye contact as he slowly stirred his pasta.
I ate a small piece of my roll before answering "I know you didn't mean it Dick, it's fine. You yelled at me but I yelled right back so I'm partly to blame as well. The only reason I yelled at you was because I was upset about reopening certain things I would prefer stay closed."
His eyes softened in understanding and he placed a hand on my shoulder "You want to talk about it" he asked barely above a whisper.
I sighed and turned my chair to face him. "I took it hard when my family died. Don't get me wrong I was happy and grateful to find Aunt Sue when I did, but I still felt…empty. My family meant the world to me and when they died my world died with them. The feelings Roy has pent-up inside of him right now where the exact feelings I had when I first arrived in Gotham. I felt angry, sad, bitter, lonely, betrayed, weak, and most of all the need for revenge.
I felt a burning passion to go out in the world, find whoever killed my family, and make them suffer for it. I fell into a state of depression and my anger grew until I hated the world as a whole, not just the bad guys.
I despised everyone and everything around me, and my anger did nothing but hurt me further. For a long time Sasha was my only friend, and I only knew her because of Aunt Sue. I decided I didn't want anything to do with the world and pushed anyone and everyone away so I wouldn't get hurt again. I refused to get close to anyone because I was afraid if I got attached they would leave me just like my family did.
Eventually I realized that I couldn't live like that anymore; that my parents wouldn't have wanted me to live like that anymore. They would've wanted me to move on with my life, to be happy not angry; so I changed.
I pushed down the hurt and anger and allowed people into my life again. I made friends and as time passed my anger slowly ebbed deeper and deeper into myself until I couldn't feel it anymore. I decided to look at the world through new eyes, to look with hopeful and inspiring ones instead of hateful ones. I let go of the past so I could move on with my future.
It was hard to drag myself out of the pit of despair I'd placed myself in, but I pushed through and eventually won the fight. That's why I lectured Roy today. When I looked into his eyes I saw the same expression I had back then. Eyes trying to mask the pain and anger swirling around from deep within while simultaneously trying to show the world the exact opposite. I've been down the path he's starting on and it's not a pretty one. I wanted to use my life, my experience, my pain, to save him from making the same mistakes I did." A single tear trailed down my cheek as I finished my explanation.
I slammed my fist on the counter in frustration "I tried to save him, but he just won't listen. If he doesn't change now he's going to end up like me and let his emotions run his life. He'll isolate himself from the world and build a fort around himself that no one can breach. He'll start to see the world as nothing but a fake illusion of what he's supposed to have, what he used to have, but lost without any warning. Like life's laughing in his face finding amusement through his misfortune and pain."
I pushed my chair away from the counter and stood from the chair wiping my eyes fiercely to try to stop the ever-growing flow of tears, but unfortunately was failing miserably. I tried to walk out of the room and away from Robin before I broke down completely, but he grabbed my arm before I could get far.
He gently tugged me back and pulled me into a tender hug while rubbing soothing circles on my back to calm me down. I wrapped my arms around his neck accepting the hug as he whispered in my ear. "It's ok Dawn, no ones here. It's just you and me, I know you're fighting to keep your emotions locked up and pushed down, but that's just as bad as letting them consume you. Let it out Dawn, let it all out. Let go of the pain, the sadness, the anger, and the hurt. You thought you did it before, but all you did was push it down letting it silently bubble up inside until something triggered it back to the surface. You couldn't fight it off when you were younger because you were fighting alone, but you're not alone anymore Dawn. I'm here and I'm fighting with you, but you have to let it go. It ultimately has to be your decision to release your demons Dawn. I can only get you so far in the battle, but you have to be the one to finish the job. So let it out, just let it all out," he whispered as I gripped him tighter.
His words triggered something in me and all the walls I'd built up crumbled away leaving me vulnerable and exposed as I faced my inner darkness. My legs buckled and I slumped into him for support. He wrapped his arms around me and gently lowered us down to the ground. His back was pressed against the back of the couch while I sat in his lap with my head buried in his chest as my sobs grew louder and louder.
Dick pulled me closer and coursed his hand through my hair and held me tight making his arms like a protective barrier around me.
"I tried Dick. I tried to keep the feelings buried and I tried to save Roy, but I failed. I failed at both." I whispered as I cried into his shirt.
"I know you tried Dawn, I know you did," he whispered placing his chin on the top of my head as he rubbed soothing circles on my back. With those words of encouragement I finally let everything go. For the next 20 minutes Robin held me tight and comforted me as I cried and finally released all of my buried emotions. We didn't say anything, but frankly we didn't need to. We both knew this was a moment for silence so neither of us spoke a word.
Finally after I'd cried my eyes out I lifted my head from his drenched chest and looked up into his ocean blue eyes. He lifted his hand to wipe away the last tear trickling down my check and I gave him a weak smile.
"Thanks Rob" I whispered wanting him to know how much I appreciated this. Words could never describe how much this moment meant to me, but I tried to show him as much as I could how truly grateful I was for his support.
Last time I had to face my demons alone, but this time I had Dick by my side the whole way. "And sorry about drenching your shirt" I muttered letting out a small laugh.
He smiled and leaned down until our foreheads touched "You don't have to do things alone anymore Dawn. I'll always be here, wherever and whenever you need me. Whenever you need an ear to listen, a friend to lean on, or a shoulder to cry on, I'll be there. I'll be your rock when you become unstable and your light to find your way back when your consumed by darkness."
"Same" I whispered as we hugged one last time.
"And I don't care about the shirt Dawn, I care about you way more than a measly shirt" he whispered before pulling away.
"So we good?" he asked.
"Best friends can't stay mad at each other very long Wonder Boy" I answered using Sasha's nickname for him.
"Uh, not you too" he mumbled slamming his head into his hand. I laughed at his reaction and underneath his hand he let a small smirk creep onto his face. And just like that everything was back to normal. We were back to being best friends just like it should, and always would be.
The next day Robin, Wally, and I teleported to the Mountain from the batcave. I was wearing a pair of jean shorts, a black shirt with the Batman symbol on it and some black converse's.
"Recognized Robin B01, Kid Flash, B03, Shade B10" The computer blared announcing our arrival for everyone to hear. We ran over to where the rest of the team was standing as they looked at multiple holographic computer screens in the main hanger area.
"Did you ask him?" Robin asked as we ran over.
"What did he say?" Wally asked not giving anyone a chance to answer Robin's question.
"He's arriving now," Aqualad said calmly.
"Then what are we waiting for" Wally said before speeding off to meet Red Tornado. The rest of us ran after him to the landing pad outside the cave and watched Red Tornado land.
"Red Tornado" Wally shouted waving at the android as he walked up.
"Greetings, is there a reason you intercept me outside the cave" Tornado asked in his robotic voice.
"We hoped you had a mission for us," Kaldur said with a hint of hope in his voice.
"Mission assignments are the Batman's responsibility" Red said in a matter of fact kind of way.
I groaned "but it's been over a week, and nothing…" my rant was interrupted by Tornado holding his hand up conveying the universal message for silence.
"You'll be tested soon enough. For the time being simply enjoy each others company," Red said and I frowned.
"This team is not a social club," Aqualad said speaking my thoughts.
"No, but I am told social interaction is an important team-building exercise. Perhaps you can keep busy by familiarizing yourself with the cave," Red suggested as he walked into the base.
"Keep busy" Wally whispered to Robin and I angrily.
"Does he think we're falling for this" Robin said clenching his fists.
"Oh, I'll find out" Megan said in her overly cheery voice. She turned to face Tornado and tried to read his mind.
"She can read robots minds; I didn't think that was possible" I thought as we waited to hear what she found out. Her eyes stopped glowing and she looked back with disappoint flooding her face "I'm sorry. I forgot he's a machine, inorganic, I can't read his mind."
"Nice try though. So, uh, you know what I'm thinking right now?" Wally asked Megan flirtatiously leaning closer.
I shook my head and hit him upside the head in the form of a Gibb's slap "We all know what you're thinking pea brain."
"And now we tour the clubhouse" Aqualad said somewhat bitterly.
"Well Superboy and I live here. We can play tour guides," Megan offered and looked at Superboy expectantly.
"Don't look at me," Superboy said gruffly folding his arms.
"We wont, a private tour sounds much more fun," Wally said turning back to Megan.
I Gibb slapped him again. "Ow! Shade quit it with the hitting!" Wally yelled rubbing the back of his head.
"Sh-she never said private," Robin said to Wally stuttering slightly.
"Whoa whoa whoa, hold up wait a minute rewind press play, did Robin just...stutter" I thought shocked as I looked at Robin. Robin never stutters, like EVER!
I quickly shook my head to clear my thoughts as Megan began the tour.
After we'd explored the entire mountain we walked into a room with a big pool of water in it as Wally started telling us facts about the Mountain. "It was hollowed out and reinforced by Superman and Green Lantern in the early days of the League."
"Then why abandon it for the Hall of Justice?" Superboy asked.
"The cave's secret location was compromised," I told him.
"So they traded it in for a tourist trap? Yeah that makes sense," he said sarcastically.
"If villains know of the cave we must be on constant alert" Megan said.
Robin grabbed her hand "the bad guys know we know they know about the place so they'd never think to look here" Robin said confusing Megan with his fast words.
"Ok, first it was stuttering, now he's grabbing Megan's hand in a flirty way, that's something Wally would do not Rob. What is this, crazy Robin day!" I yelled in my head.
Wally lifted Robin's hand from Megan's and interpreted for her "uh, he means we're hiding in plain sight."
"Ah, that's much clearer" she said slowly scratching her head obviously still confused.
Superboy sniffed the air "I smell smoke."
Megan's eyes widened "my cookies!" she yelled flying towards the kitchen. I flew after her and the boys ran after us.
We arrived in the kitchen to see Megan using her telekinesis to open the oven and lift a hot tray of charred cookies onto the counter. She stared at her ruined cookies sadly "I was trying out Grammy Jones recipe from episode 17 of… heh never mind," she chuckled nervously.
"I bet they'd have tasted great," I said trying to cheer her up "he doesn't seem to mind," I said pointing to KF who was stuffing his face with the charred cookies. Wally looked up from the cookies when he noticed everyone was staring at him like he was crazy. "I have a serious metabolism" he defended.
"I'll make more?" Megan said slowly like she wasn't sure whether to say it as a question or a statement.
"It was sweet of you to make any" Aqualad told her.
Megan smiled "Thanks Aqualad."
He placed a hand on his chest "We're off duty. Call me Kaldur'ahm, actually my friends call me Kaldur."
"I'm Wally. See? I already trust you with my secret ID" KF said leaning towards Megan from across the counter. "Unlike Mr. Dark glasses over here. Batman's forbidden Boy Wonder from telling anyone his real name" he pointed to Robin who everyone could tell was glaring at KF even though we couldn't see his eyes because of the dark shades he had to wear.
"Leave him alone Wally, you know how Batman is," I said quickly coming to Robin's defense.
"How come you don't wear glasses like Robin, Shade" Superboy asked.
"Call me Dawn SB, and Batman tried to make me follow that rule but unlike Robin I broke the rules when I told my other best friend who I was. After he saw that I wasn't going to follow the rule entirely he said I could only tell people that he approved of and that I absolutely trusted with my life. We're a team now and I've known most of you for years so I trust you guys to keep a secret."
"Mine's no secret it's M'gann M'orzz but you can call me Megan. It's an earth name, and I'm on earth now" she said grinning.
Superboy started to walk away when he suddenly stopped and yelled, "Get out of my head!"
For a second I was confused on why he was yelling until I heard Megan's voice in my head causing me to flinch in pain.
"M'gann stop!" Aqualad commanded sternly causing her to jump back surprised by his tone.
"Things are different on Earth. Here your powers are an extreme invasion of privacy," he explained not wanting to sound too harsh.
"Besides, Cadmus' creepy little psychic genomes left a bad taste in his brain" Wally whispered pointing to Superboy.
"Stop being mean Wally" I scolded.
"I…I didn't mean to" Megan stuttered struggling to find the right words to apologize.
"Just stay out" Superboy yelled a little harsher then was necessary as he stalked out of the room. We looked at Megan nervously when she lightly hit her hand on her forehand like she'd just remembered something "Hello Megan I know what we can do."
She floated off the ground and took off down the hallway. We all followed her and she convinced Superboy to come with us as we walked to the aircraft hangar.
She pointed to a red and blue oval looking thing in the middle of the hanger "It's my martian bioship."
"Cute, not aerodynamic, but cute" Wally said.
Megan laughed "It's at rest silly, I'll wake it."
She lifted her hand and the oval quickly transformed into an awesome looking red and blue aircraft. As Megan lowered her hand the bioship turned in the air and a door formed in the back with a ramp leading up to it.
"Well are you coming," she asked.
"Oh heck yeah, count me in. This is awesome! How fast does it go, what kind of weapons does it have, does it use gas or some other type of alien energy" I bombarded her with questions as I rushed over to the ship.
The only thing I love just as much if not more than being Shade is airplanes and cars. I've always had a fascination with airplanes, especially fast military ones, and when Megan brought out this beauty I just couldn't resist the temptation. The boys looked at each other silently debating on if they should get in or not, but ultimately decided to follow Megan and I into the Ship.
We walked into the bioship and 6 seats popped out of the floor.
"My life has now officially reached a totally new level of awesomeness," I whispered taking a seat in one of the chairs. My seat was in the middle of the bioship directly in front of Megan's command chair. As I sat down a seatbelt formed around me strapping me in. Everyone took a seat and yelped in surprise when the seat belts formed around them.
"Red Tornado, please open the bay doors" Megan said as she sat in the command chair. When the bay doors were fully open we lifted off the ground and shot off into the air.
"This is so cool" I squealed bouncing in my chair barely containing my excitement "you are definitely showing me how to fly this thing later."
She smiled at my enthusiasm, "I'd be happy to teach you."
"Incredible" Robin gapped staring out the window watching as the buildings below became a meshed up blur at the speed we were going.
"She sure is" Wally said in a dreamy voice as he looked at Megan. When he finally realized he said that out loud he quickly tried to cover "I—I mean the ship, which like all ships is a she."
"Fast with his feet, not so much with his mouth" Robin whispered to Megan but loud enough so everyone could hear it. I laughed loudly at the comment as Wally groaned "Dude!"
I could faintly hear Kaldur and SB talking about Superboy's outburst earlier. Aqualad was trying to give him some advice on how to apologize to Megan. "He'll come around," Robin whispered to Megan since they heard the conversation as well.
She looked down sadly "He doesn't seem to like me much."
"You guys do remember he has super hearing right?" I reminded them as they glanced at Superboy who'd heard every word they said.
"Hey, how 'bout showing us a little martian shape shifting" Robin suggested quickly changing the subject.
I turned my chair to face Megan as she put the bioship on autopilot and stood up. Everyone turned to watch as her body and clothes changed into a girl version of Robin. She twirled and transformed into a girl version of KF striking a pose at the end.
"Is it wrong that I think I'm hot?" Wally asked to no one in particular.
"Yes" I answered immediately not looking at Wally.
Megan shifted back to normal as Robin clapped for her "impressive but you know your not exactly gonna fool anyone with those."
"Mimicking boys is a lot harder," she explained looking at the floor.
"And your clothes?" Aqualad asked.
"They're organic, like the ship. They respond to my mental commands."
"As long as they're the only ones" Superboy muttered harshly making Megan frown.
"How about you try me then. I'm a girl so I should be easier to copy" I said distracting her from Superboy's comment. She looked at me and smiled as she changed into a perfect replica of me in my Shade uniform.
"Wow, impressive you got every last detail correct" I complimented as I scanned her with my eyes, trying to find a flaw in her disguise, but found none.
She changed back to her original form and returned to the command chair.
"Can you do that ghosting through walls thing that Manhunter does?" Wally asked.
"Density shifting? No, it's a very advanced technique," she answered.
"Flash can vibrate his molecules right through a wall." Robin chuckled and pointed at KF "When he tries it, bloody nose."
I laughed once again while Wally screamed at Robin. "Here's something I can do" Megan said as the bioship started to turn invisible, "camouflage mode."
I glanced out the window and saw that the bioship was no longer red and blue. It blended in with the sky around us hiding us from view. "This ship just keeps getting better and better."
Red Tornado's voice came through the radio telling us about an emergency alert from Happy Harbor and we went to investigate.
"Tornado's keeping us busy again" Robin said bitterly.
"Well a simple fire led you to Superboy. We should find out what caused the alert," Megan said to him.
"I think I know the cause," Superboy shouted as we looked out the window to see a huge twister coming towards us. The bioship got sucked into the twister and we were violently jerked around by the wind. I lifted my hands and commanded the wind around us to ease up a bit creating an opening in the twister so Megan could maneuver the ship through it and land safely on the ground.
We exited the ship and even though I didn't see it happening I knew Robin had performed his famous disappearing act, and silently lurked into the building. Most people can't tell when or how he disappears, but from being his best friend and having worked with him for years I've learned to sense when he disappears.
"Robin are tornadoes common to New England?" Aqualad asked as he looked back to talk to Rob and was surprised to see he was gone.
"He was just here" Megan said confused.
"He does that a lot, you'll get used to it after a while" I told them. I pulled my mask out of my pocket and put it on, even though I don't wear glasses like Robin I wasn't stupid enough to go into a possibly dangerous situation where I might have to use my powers in civilian clothes with no mask on. That was just a disaster waiting to happen.
I flew into the building and saw Robin get thrown into a wall by a red robot that resembled Tornado, but unlike Tornado he had a more muscular build and big blue tubes sticking out of his back.
"Who's your new friend" Superboy asked Robin as I helped him off the ground.
"Didn't catch his name, but he plays kinda rough," Rob said while trying to catch his breath.
"My apologies, you may address me as Mr. Twister" the robot boomed as he created two tornadoes and threw them at Superboy sending him flying into the wall. KF put his goggles on and ran towards Twister but got knocked off his feet and thrown out of the building by a small tornado. He flew through the air and skidded across the grass until he hit a tree knocking him unconscious.
Another twister threw Megan and Kaldur into each other, dazing them for a moment.
"I was prepared to be challenged by a superhero. I was not however, expecting children," Twister drawled in a bored tone.
"We're not children!" Robin growled throwing exploding batarang's at Twister but he just swatted them away.
"Objectively you are. Have you no adult supervision? I find your presence here quite...disturbing," he said in what I considered a robotic version of an annoyed voice.
"Well we hate to see you disturbed. Let's see if you're more turbed once we kick your can" Rob yelled back at him.
"Oh no, now he's got another one. Whelmed was bad enough but now I have to listen to him say turbed all the time, thanks a lot Twister" I groaned.
Megan used her telekinesis to crush the top of an air tube which covered Twister with steam. SB lunged at him but got thrown back into Megan. Robin and Kaldur ran up to him but end up getting thrown into each other as well.
"Indeed that was quite turbing," Twister said as he turned to me "and then there was one."
"Well this one is about to take you down," I hissed getting into a fighting stance.
"I highly doubt that" he answered as he threw a twister at me. I threw up my hands and made the twister disappear.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here, you can control the air as well...how interesting" he said intrigued.
I created a huge gust of wind and used it to throw him out of the building and into the open field outside. He created two twisters and threw them at me once he'd regained his footing, but I flew up and dodged them. As I dodged the last twister I lifted my hand and threw a fireball at him successfully scorching his chest plate.
Twister laughed and looked down at his slightly singed chest, "Now this is more like it," he said as KF ran up behind him, but once again got thrown into a wall. I turned to see Megan catch him before he could fall to the ground and the rest of the team came up to stand beside me.
"I would have thought you had all learned your limitations by now. The only one who seems remotely capable of keeping up with me is that girl there," he said pointing at me.
"What do you want!" Kaldur shouted.
"Isn't it obvious? I'm waiting for a real hero." Twister declared.
Aqualad turned to Megan "read his mind, find a weakness."
"I thought I wasn't suppose to do that," Megan hesitated remembering our earlier conversation.
"It's ok with the bad guys" Robin said impatiently.
"Nothing, I'm getting nothing, hello Megan" she said tapping her hand on her forehead "Mr. Twister is Red Tornado in disguise. He's inorganic, and how many androids do you know that can generate tornadoes."
"Red Tornado sent us here" Aqualad said.
"After saying we'd be tested soon enough. This is his test, something to keep us busy" Robin added.
"Speedy called it, we're a joke" KF said as the three walked towards Twister.
I wasn't totally convinced Twister was Tornado but I knew the boys wouldn't listen to me when they were this worked up, so I didn't say anything and kept a vigilant eye on Twister just in case.
"We know who you are and what you want," Robin yelled at Twister who was floating high up in the air.
"So let's end this" Aqualad added. Twister narrowed his eyes at the boys and spoke slowly in a dark voice "Consider it ended."
He raised his hands and everything started to change. The sky turned black and the wind started to pick up like a storm before a hurricane.
"An impressive show, but we will not indulge you, we will not engage" Aqualad yelled struggling to be heard above the wind. I saw lightning flash behind Twister as I tried to calm the wind around us so we wouldn't get blown away.
"Uh, can Red Tornado do that?" Wally asked nervously.
"You think I'm Tornado? Ironic" Twister said as he shot a bolt of lightning at the ground in front of us causing an explosion that sent us flying through the air.
Megan called the bioship over and used it to block us from Twisters view. "Fine then. I won't deny you children have power but playing hide and seek with you wouldn't help me achieve my objectives so stay concealed. If you confront me again, I will show no mercy," he warned before flying off.
"What happened" Wally asked confused rubbing his head trying to ease the pain from the hard landing.
"I placed the bioship in-between us" Megan said softly.
"And that's suppose to make it right?" Superboy yelled "You tricked us into thinking Twister was Red Tornado."
"Hey! Don't yell at her, she didn't trick anyone. She had an idea and suggested it to the group for everyone to think about. You guys were the ones who jumped to conclusions without looking at all the facts. Don't blame her for your impulsiveness," I snapped at him angrily.
"She didn't do it on purpose," Aqualad agreed.
"It was a rookie mistake. We shouldn't have listened" Robin said stuffing his hands in his pockets.
"You are pretty inexperienced. Hit the showers we'll take it from here" Wally said staring at the ground.
Megan's frown grew larger with every comment causing my anger to skyrocket. "So now we're blaming everything on Megan. The entire fight wasn't her fault you know and what about Superboy. He's a rookie too and you guys aren't saying anything bad about him and he's only been fighting for a day!" I yelled at them defending Megan.
"Stay out of our way" Superboy growled as he ran after Twister. Robin and KF gave Megan apologetic looks before glancing at me. They flinched from the intense glare they received before running after Superboy.
"I was just trying to be a part of the team," Megan said weakly.
"To be honest, I'm not sure we really have a team" Aqualad sighed as he ran off after the boys.
"Don't worry Megan they're just angry because they got their butts kicked by a robot, it wasn't your fault" I told her.
"You should go Shade they'll need your help" Megan said as she started walking towards the bioship.
"No I'm staying with you, they can handle Twister themselves," I said not wanting to leave her alone.
"No, Shade I'm fine, they need you more than I do."
I hesitated thinking about it but ultimately decided she was right. I placed a hand on her shoulder and gave her a reassuring squeeze before flying after the boys.
The Happy Harbor docks were destroyed when I reached them since multiple twisters whipped around crushing houses, picking up boats and cars and throwing them everywhere. I spotted Robin and KF hiding behind a rock as Robin pulled out his utility belt from his jacket. I flew over and peeked out from behind the rock searching for Twister.
"Good Shade you showed up, we could really use your help" KF said relieved.
I glared at him and stayed silent still mad at them for making Megan feel bad.
"Aw come on Shade you know I hate the silent treatment" he whined.
"And that's exactly why I'm doing it," I thought as I continued to ignore him. I flinched when I heard Megan's voice inside my head again.
"Listen to me all of you" she said urgently in our heads.
"What did we tell you," Superboy growled.
"I know and I know I messed up but now I'm very clear on what we need to do. Please trust me," she said as she explained the plan.
"Megan you're a genius" I told her through the link as I saw her fly towards Twister disguised as Red Tornado.
"Hit the showers boys. I was hoping you could handle this clearly you cannot" she said to the group in Tornadoes voice. I stayed hidden behind the rock waiting for the signal for the plan to begin.
"But we've got a plan now" Robin fake whined.
"The subject is not up for debate," Megan said as the boys left to go to their positions as Megan faced Twister.
"I was beginning to believe you'd never show up." Twister said to Megan.
"I'm here now," she said lifting her hands. That was my cue to make a twister so it looked like Tornado made it and threw it at Twister. He dodged and threw his own twister at Megan. I continued to make tornadoes for Megan throwing them at Twister to make him believe he was fighting Tornado. After a while Megan pretended to get hit by a twister and laid completely still on the ground making it look like she was unconscious as Twister walked up to her.
"Remain still android," he said as wires came out of his fingers and attaching themselves to the back of Megan's head. "The reprogramming won't take long."
Megan grabbed the wires and transformed her head back to normal "longer then you might think" she said smirking at Twister.
I lifted a piece of a broken boat into the air and threw it at Twister making him stumble back as KF rushed over and threw him into Superboy who punched him repeatedly, creating large dents in his armor. Superboy threw him into the water where Kaldur was waiting to electrocute him, which sent him flying back to the surface. Megan lifted him into the air and held him there while I used my telekinesis to rip off his robotic arms so he couldn't make any more twisters. Robin threw exploding batarangs at his chest causing him to fall to the ground as Megan released him.
We all walked up to the defeated android and watched as Twister's chest plate opened causing a small and skinny man in a green body suit to fall out and hit the concrete. "Foul I—I call foul," he said weakly holding up his hands in surrender.
I saw Megan lift a huge boulder in the air and before I could use my powers to stop her she dropped the boulder on the man crushing him. I stared at the rock where the man had just been kneeling in surrender. "Did she just…no she wouldn't…she couldn't...but she did…no there has to be a logical explanation" I stuttered as I stared at her wide-eyed.
Robin stormed over to her "Don't know how things are done on Mars, but on Earth we don't execute our captives!" he screamed at her anger in his eyes.
Megan just grinned at him "you said you trust me" she said lifting the boulder revealing that the man was just another robot.
"That's why I couldn't read his mind" Megan told us.
I let out a huge sigh of relief knowing she didn't actually just commit murder. KF bent down and picked up one of the robots eyes "cool souvenir." He threw the eye in the air and caught it before it hit the ground.
"We should have had more faith in you" Kaldur said.
"Yeah you rocked this mission. Get it rocked" Wally said trying to be funny.
"Ignore him, we're all just turbed you're on the team" Robin said.
"Thanks, me too" she said smiling.
Robin looked at KF and Kaldur. "We also wanted to apologize for being so hard on you earlier, we hope you can forgive us" Robin asked Megan apologetically, hoping she wouldn't hold a grudge.
"You are forgiven" Megan said already returning back to her overly cheery self. The boys looked at me next "does this mean the silent treatment is over; please, please, pretty please Shade. I hate getting the cold shoulder from you, it's worse than when you yell at us" Wally begged. I stared at them for a while silently enjoying making them squirm before grinning, "I guess since Megan forgave you I can as well."
"YES" Robin and KF yelled fist bumping each other as they walked to the bioship. Kaldur and Superboy quickly followed and when the boys were out of sight Megan turned to me.
"Thank you for sticking up for me today."
I looked at her and put a hand on her shoulder "No one messes with my sister unless they want to face the full-fledged fury of Shade."
A huge grin formed on her face "you just called me your sister" she said surprised.
"Yeah, I did. We might not be related by blood but I still consider you a sister and a close friend" I told her as we walked towards the bioship.
"Same here" she said giving me a hug before we walked into the bioship and flew home.
Mount Justice
We brought the remains of the crushed robot back to Mount Justice so we could study it as we informed Tornado on what happened at the docks.
"It was clearly created to sabotage or destroy you" Aqualad explained to him.
"Agreed" Tornado nodded.
"Is that why you wouldn't help us" Megan asked curious.
Tornado shook his head "No this was your battle. I do not believe it is my role to solve your problems for you. Nor should you solve mine for me."
"But if you're in danger..." Megan started but was cut off by Tornado.
"Consider the matter closed." Tornado turned from the table and walked away from the team.
"Batman, Aquaman, and Flash they'd have jumped right in to fix things" Wally said.
"Guess if we're gonna have a baby sitter, a heartless machine is exactly what we need," Robin said.
His statement shocked me and I Gibb's slapped him hard.
"Robin!" I scolded.
"Dude harsh" Wally whispered.
"And inaccurate" Tornado said as he walked down the hall "I have a heart, carbon-steel alloy...I also have excellent hearing."
I grinned satisfied with Tornado's come back.
Robin rubbed the back of his head sheepishly "heh, right sorry I'll strive to be more…accurate" he apologized.
"And more respectful" Aqualad added placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Speedy was so wrong" Wally said as they started walking down the hall.
"This team thing..." Robin started.
"...might just work out" Aqualad finished for him. I stayed behind with SB and Megan as the other three walked off. Superboy turned to us and quietly said "Sorry" to Megan before walking away.
Megan smiled like the Cheshire cat and I grinned knowingly, "Ohhhhh yeah there is definitely something going on there," I thought as Megan and I walked towards the kitchen.
As we walked I told her about Aunt Sue and how she's an amazing cook. I told her she should come over for dinner one night so Sue could teach her how to cook and bake.
"Really, you don't think she'd mind" Megan asked jumping up and down in excitement.
I slung an arm around her shoulder "for family, she wouldn't mind at all."
Chapter 4 everyone. All right so in this episode I wanted to show how Dawn is slowly starting to consider the team as her family. And I loved her moment with Robin; it was by far my favorite moment to write in this chapter. Next chapter is Drop-zone but with a few twists and then we get deeper into Dawn's past. Please, please, please, with a cherry on top review.
