Shade's POV
"Since I know it's been bugging you I'll begin by explaining how I know about Priscilla and Zaphira" BlackBlade stated.
He paused as if he was waiting to see if I would react but I kept my face emotionless, refusing to give him the satisfaction of knowing his words affect me. Once he noticed I wasn't going to comment he continued, "I know because Priscilla told me everything" he finished.
"Impossible" I cut in quickly not fully believing him.
BlackBlade immediately responded with "not impossible Shade, just unexpected. I know this is probably hard for you to believe since you've only seen her in your dreams, but maybe this will convince you that I'm telling the truth."
He pushed himself off the railing and took a step forward causing everyone to tense up but thankfully no one pulled their weapons, which pleased BlackBlade, but he didn't take another step forward. He remained still not wanting to test his luck with my teammates and called out Priscilla's name. I looked at him strangely before a bright, but not blinding, blue light appeared on the roof in-between BlackBlade and us and from that light appeared Priscilla.
"Hello Dawn, I told you we'd be meeting again soon," she said smiling.
I stood there dumbfounded while Batman glanced back and forth between Priscilla and BlackBlade suspiciously.
"Priscilla" I asked not entirely convinced this was the real her.
"It is me my dear," she said in her angelic voice that was impossible to copy.
"Zaphira, what do you think" I asked turning to face her.
"Priscilla's essence is impossible to fake, its unique, I'd know if this was a trick, and this is no trick. They're telling the truth."
Zaphira's approval was all the proof I needed before flying over to give Priscilla a hug. She chuckled softly and returned the gesture. We released the hug a couple of seconds later and I stepped back so I could see her face "how is this possible" I asked.
"I'm only able to create a physical body when I'm truly needed on the surface world, which in this case I am since there are some important things we need to tell you" she said glancing to BlackBlade.
"And what might those things be exactly" Batman asked folding his arms.
Batman's voice instantly reminded me that we weren't the only two on the roof. I stepped back from Priscilla and returned to my place beside Robin and Zaphira.
Priscilla turned to Batman and gave him a calculating glance as if she was evaluating him before speaking "you are Shade's mentor I presume."
"You would presume correctly," he said.
"I'd shake your hand but I have a feeling you wouldn't return the gesture, so I wont bother trying" she said.
Batman stayed silent neither confirming nor denying her statement, but we all knew she was right.
She turned to Robin and gave him the same calculating glance she gave Batman however his was less intense than Batman's.
"And you must be Robin. Again I'd shake your hand but I'm sure Batman would bite off my hand if I tried" she said giving him a small smile. Robin instantly liked her and returned her smile with his own signature grin.
"Not that I don't love this touching introduction and all but we really should get back to business" BlackBlade interrupted.
"Yes you're right BlackBlade we have much more important things to do" Priscilla agreed. She stepped back and nodded at BlackBlade silently giving him permission to speak. BlackBlade got the memo and started the conversation.
"I arranged this meeting to help and warn you. I assume you've noticed the new criminal group stealing pieces of tech from cities all across the globe. If you didn't know already they call themselves the Black Knights. Their efficient, fast, well-funded, and they never fail a mission. Their members consist of some the best criminals in the world, some are so good in fact that they've managed to stay off the books so you probably don't even know half of them exist. No one knows who their leader is or what he or she looks like. All we know is that they're powerful and dangerous. I've been gathering Intel on the Black Knights for a while and a trusted friend of mine sent me an encrypted file with some information on their plans. The reason I'm telling this is because Shade's name was mentioned multiple times in the data."
"My name? What for?" I asked.
"My friend couldn't get much but from what I can tell they need you for something. They have a list of all your known powers and abilities and they've studied your fighting patterns. From the list of tech they've stolen it looks like they're planning to build some type of weapon, but I didn't have enough information to figure out what type of weapon they're creating."
"This is the group I warned you about" Priscilla cut in. "On the outside they may seem like a common criminal organization but don't let their façade fool you. The Black Knights have been around for decades searching for the crystal hoping to control its immense power. They may do side jobs to keep up appearances but their true goal has and forever will be the crystal, thankfully they've never been able to find it. They got close once, but one of my closest friends was able to distract them long enough for me to escape and hide the crystal until the proper host could be chosen. The dream you had wasn't just a regular dream my dear, it was a memory. You were young when you were chosen and had forgotten the experience so the crystal reminded you."
"So you're saying that this magical crystal chose Shade to be the one to wield its power, why?" Robin asked.
"The crystal only chooses people worthy of wielding its power. People who'll use its power for good and righteous deeds" she answered.
"Why are you telling us this? What do you gain from helping us?" Batman asked BlackBlade.
BlackBlade crossed his arms and remained calm despite Batman's intense glare "I may not particularly like you Batman but I don't personally have anything against you. And despite what you may think I'm not a bad guy, Shade can vouch for me."
I didn't need to face Batman or Robin to know they were staring at me silently asking if this was true. Zaphira didn't turn away from BlackBlade, not wanting to let her eyes wander from a potential threat, but her ears perked up signaling that she was listening to what I was going to say.
I focused on BlackBlade as I thought of what to say next.
"BlackBlade may not be dubbed a hero, but he's not a villain either. No villain I know would've willingly helped me after a fight, especially when it was the perfect opportunity to take me out, yet BlackBlade did. He helped me after the Roquette mission by curing my massive head injury, which would've left me defenseless if more villains had showed up, or if Cheshire had brought more back up. I know it sounds crazy and illogical but for some reason I…trust him."
"Trust? Trust! How can you say you trust him Shade when you don't even know the guy. For all we know this could've been his plan all along. He'd get you to trust him just so he can stab you in the back later" Robin yelled frustration and anger creeping into his voice.
I flinched slightly at his tone. I didn't expect him to be this angry and it shocked me for a second before I regained my composure, but I didn't hide it fast enough.
Behind his mask BlackBlade noticed my flinch and narrowed his eyes glaring at Robin.
"You know kid, you might want to be careful about throwing accusations around like that, especially when you don't know what you're talking about. They could get you into some serious trouble" he hissed.
Robin returned BlackBlade's intense glare "trouble, with who, you? Ha! Don't make me laugh BlackBlade I could take you down in less than a minute blindfolded with both hands tied behind my back. And who are you calling a kid; you're only like two or three years older than me. And as far as I can tell you've shown us nothing to prove that you're on our side so I think I can throw around as many accusations as I want" he snarled.
The tension between the two intensified when they both took a step forward so they were close enough to be in each other's faces.
I noticed how their hands were slowly inching towards their weapons and I quickly intervened before things could get worse.
"Ok guys that's enough, no one wants to start a fight right now" I said squeezing in between them while placing a hand on both of their chests making myself a human barrier between the two preventing either from advancing any further.
They continued to glare at each other until Priscilla spoke up "Shade's right, there's no reason to start a fight."
BlackBlade looked down at me and held my gaze for a second before looking back at Robin. He glared at him one last time before taking a step back and fold his arms over his chest showing everyone he wasn't going to attack. Robin backed off as well but kept his hand close to his belt.
Once everyone was calm again I asked the question I'd wanted to ask all night "Priscilla, why did you tell BlackBlade about my dreams?"
Priscilla glanced at BlackBlade "I think BlackBlade should be the one to answer that question Shade, it'd be more meaningful coming from him. Unfortunately I won't able to stay for the explanation, my time in this form is almost over."
She glided over to me and placed a hand on each of my shoulders "I wish I could give you more assistance in mastering your powers but I'm confident you'll do just fine."
"You've done enough for me already Priscilla. And don't worry I'll learn to control my new powers and take down the Black Knights once and for all" I said confidently.
She smiled "I have no doubt you will."
Next she floated over to Batman and hovered in front of him. They stared at each other for a while before Batman gave her a silent nod. I smiled knowing this wasn't just a regular nod; it was his way of saying without words that he acknowledged her assistance and finally recognized her as a friend. Priscilla understood the hidden meaning behind the gesture and returned his nod with the same acknowledgment.
After she finished with Bruce she moved on to Robin. She placed her hand on the top of is head and closed her eyes as her hand started to glow. The faint glow from her hand enveloped him outlining his entire body with the blue light before slowly fading away.
"Ok what was that" Robin asked hesitantly once the light disappeared.
"I've linked you with Zaphira so she can sense your presence and communicate with you telepathically like she can with Shade, I also created a personal link between you and Shade. Even though neither of your are telepathic the link allows you to communicate with each other telepathically whenever you want."
Robin and I looked at each other and tested the link.
"Oh this is so going to come in handy on missions and pranks" Robin thought.
I smirked "Yeah it will, imagine how freaked out we can make Wally before we finally tell him about the link."
Robin laughed and returned his attention to Priscilla.
I faintly heard Batman mutter "of all the things she could've given them she had to give them this, oh dear god help me."
My smirk grew as I thought of all the new pranks we could pull with this new ability.
"Robin I have one last gift for you," Priscilla said as she flipped her hands so her palms were facing towards the sky as wisps of lights started to swirl around her hands. The wisps swirled around slowly drawing closer and closer together until they created two solid forms. Hovering above her left hand was a thin black board and above her right hand was a long black staff.
The black board had the shape of a skateboard but no wheels, it looked like one of those small black hover board you'd see in movies. Two dark grey circles were on the top of the board indicating where your feet were supposed to go.
The staff seemed to be made of a special type of metal, and height wise it was as tall as Robin. It was black with dark blue engravings running along the surface. The symbols were so dark they almost blended in with the black paint, which once I thought about it, was a good thing. This meant he could hold it in the dark and still blend in without it giving away his position.
Priscilla handed Robin the two items. "They may not look like much but these are two powerful magic items. They both have the ability to absorb magic attacks and protect you from them. The board acts like a hover board and responds to your mental commands. All you have to do is think about what you want it to do and the board will respond. You can fly as high and as fast as you want as long as you focus. Even if the board is not near you you can call it mentally and it will appear. The board is only compatible to you, but you can program it to allow others to use it. If someone is not programmed into the board it will not work for them. The board also has some extra features."
She lifted her right hand and touched the board's surface.
When she touched it the board lifted out of Robin's hands and floated in the air.
"This is so cool" he whispered staring at the floating board.
"The board has three modes, regular flight mode, battle mode, and camouflage mode.
In battle mode you can fire weapons at your enemies. All the boards weapons are created by your mind. You just think about what you want to fire and it will appear, however there are limits to what it can produce. The only weapons it can make are arrows, lasers, guns, smoke bombs, and nets. If it doesn't fall in those categories it can't be created.
In camouflage mode the board creates an invisible bubble around itself before camouflaging everything inside the bubble.
Now the staff is just as powerful as the board. It can absorb and block most magic attacks and has two mini electric pulse emitters on each end that release small doses of electricity with enough power to knock someone unconscious for a short period of time. It can also change form to make it easier to transport. The staff also has a special magical feature so that if you ever lose it or it gets stolen it will always return to you after a few minutes," she explained as she touched the staff making it turn into a black pen with a small red R on the side.
Robin's grin grew as he learned about all the cool features his gifts had. He looked at Priscilla and thanked her again.
Priscilla nodded before taking a step forward and leaned down until she was eye level with Robin. Her face held an expression of absolute seriousness showing Robin that what she was about to say was very important.
"You've been entrusted with these gifts Robin, use them wisely and don't ever, under any circumstances, let the Black Knights get their hands on these weapons. These two items are linked directly with the crystal and only the closest friend of the crystals host has the ability to control them properly. Since you are Shade's closest friend you've been chosen to use and protect these items. If they were to end up in the wrong hands it'd be disastrous for everyone. Remember, these are not toys, these are tools for you to use in the coming battle. Can I trust you to use the board and staff with honor, respect, and for the good of all people?" She asked seriously looking him straight in the eye searching for any signs of deceit.
Robin matched her gaze and nodded understanding the magnitude of what he was given.
"You can count on me Priscilla," he said with conviction.
Priscilla smiled satisfied with his response and returned to her full height before finally gliding over to BlackBlade. Her back was facing us as she talked to him so we weren't able to hear what she said or read her lips.
BlackBlade nodded, agreeing to whatever she said and placed a hand over the spot where his heart should be. Since he was facing us I was able to read his lips and could tell he said, "you have my word" to Priscilla. I don't know what he was agreeing to but I guess that'll just have to wait until later, right now we have more important things to discuss.
Once she finished her goodbyes she lifted off the ground and floated higher and higher into the air until she slowly faded away into the dark. When I could no longer see her I returned my gaze to BlackBlade and patiently waited for him to start explaining.
BlackBlade waited until we were all giving him our undivided attention before speaking "Priscilla told me about your dreams because I care about you" he said.
I gave him a look of confusion but didn't freak out because of his words.
In my peripheral vision I saw Robin grit his teeth and clench his fists, he looked ready to attack BlackBlade. Batman didn't seem to be acting much better although he didn't visibly show his anger as much as Robin.
I knew what BlackBlade said would affect them, but I didn't think it would freak them out this much, especially Robin; he looks about ready to kill BlackBlade with his bare hands.
"Care to elaborate on what you mean by you care about me?" I asked before Batman or Robin could attack him.
BlackBlade sighed before looking at me. It looked like he was struggling to decide on what to say next, like he was having an internal battle on how to proceed.
For the next minute or so the only person he seemed to pay attention to was me; his eyes never moved from my face "I care because I've been searching for you for years and now my search is finally over."
I was about to ask what he meant by that when I noticed his hands moving towards his mask.
"Uh…BlackBlade what are you doing?" I asked suspiciously.
"Revealing the truth," he replied before lifting the mask from his head.
His head was bent when he took it off so I couldn't immediately see his face until he looked up.
When I was able to clearly see his face I froze and my eyes widened in disbelieve. My throat clenched up making it hard to breath and my blood ran cold.
"No it can't be, but he's…but how…but you're...you're suppose to be dead" I stuttered while whispering.
He chuckled "Sorry to disappoint."
My eyes have to be playing tricks on me because this couldn't be possible, and yet the resemblance is undeniable. The same short choppy black hair, same big, kind, handsome hazel brown eyes that would make all my friends swoon, and the biggest, most caring smile anyone has ever seen, a smile I've dreamt of seeing again every night.
I quickly flew over until I was right in front of his face. We were so close our bodies were only about a centimeter apart. I slowly lifted my hand to touch his face to prove to myself that he was real and not just a figment of my imagination.
"Hey Dawn," he said smiling "long time no see."
His voice was what convinced me completely. It was deeper and older than the last time I saw him but the resemblance was still there, I knew it sounded too familiar to be a coincidence!
A tear ran down my face and I instantly crushed him in a hug making him stumble back a few steps from the unexpected force.
He chuckled and returned the hug as tightly as me.
"I've missed you Dawn," he whispered into my ear.
"I've missed you too, you don't even know how much" I whispered back.
I released the hug when I heard a loud cough originating from behind us reminding me that we had an audience. I turned to face Batman and Robin, the latter, by the way, looked like he was about to explode.
"OK what the heck is going on here? BlackBlade why do you know her name, why are you hugging her, and Dawn why are you hugging back! Who is this guy!" Robin growled trying to control his anger and confusion.
I placed a hand on BlackBlade's shoulder and gave him an encouraging smile. Now I understood why I never felt threatened by BlackBlade, why he subconsciously always seemed to be holding back when we fought, and why I instantly seemed to trust him. It all made sense now.
I turned to Batman, Robin, and Zaphira who were all looking at me like I was officially crazier than the Joker. "This is Jake Parker...he's my older brother."
