I'll be honest – things are still not as it should be, but it's steadily getting better. You wouldn't think it if you go through the house. There are boxes and plastic bags and Styrofoam and new house items everywhere. In some rooms, it looks like there had been an explosion of packaging nuts. For days, our schedules had been filled with sweeping, vacuuming, and cramming just to get everything straightened out.
Added to all of that excitement is the show downstairs. It's an all-out glitch fest, all thanks to Principal Perry. Adam's not too bad, but mostly because Big D created these specialized specs that would help contain his heat vision. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Big D added a sort of a lock to it. No one in the house want another repeat of that hub cap move during the televised stunt.
Bree, on the other hand, is suffering in her own version of The Box of Shame. We tried to find a better solution, but it seems like the box that came with the fridge is the only thing that could contain her without hurting her.
Chase, lately, had been making a serious career out of being our new fridge magnet. He's gotten stuck on the door so many times that Mom insisted that if he needed anything from the kitchen, just let her or the rest of us know what he needed and we'll take it to him. I think she offered that solution because she felt bad for him, especially that one time when the magnetism app came on too strong that he hit his head on the door handle so hard that it nearly knocked him out.
I personally don't think he minds getting hurt, because on each of those times that he did, Mom would take care of him, and I think he really likes having a mother's attention. I'd even dare to venture that Adam and Bree do too.
But what probably takes the cake in being weird is this, me writing an entry in a Hello Kitty notebook with a blueberry scented pen. Unfortunately, this turn falls on the notebook Bree gave me to write in. The pen, I grabbed it out of the holder on Big D's desk. I just noticed it was scented when I was writing the time down.
So here I am, hiding, because I'm pretty confident that Adam and Chase would have a ball out of seeing me with all of these. Older brothers can be ruthless at times, I've come to find out.
I also didn't want to slip and tell them something I shouldn't.
Okay. Here's the big news, and Big D said I should keep it under wraps until the weekend: the construction's finished, and in the basement is a brand new lab.
A new lab! Can you believe that? And I was the first person he showed it to! I was just sitting in the living room earlier, playing a board game with Adam and Chase, when Big D called me over. "Hey, uh, Leo? Can you come with me for a sec?" he asked.
Assuming that I have messed up something, again, Adam grinned. Chase laughed.
I was terrified. I had no idea with which I'd be in trouble for, because, come on – there's always going to be something. I tried to make an excuse, but Big D insisted that I come with him, with Adam and Chase basically pushing me out of the room just to see what'll happen.
Since I had no choice, I just came with Big D.
As we made our way down the stairs, I started to get the feeling that I wasn't in any trouble. Big D was too happy. Although giving me penalties for the things I had done has been happening on a ridiculously regular basis that it's become a hobby for my parents, I didn't think it was the reason.
Still, I had some doubts about that, especially when he asked me to close my eyes as we stood in front of the old sliding doors leading to the lab. "Why?" I asked. I frowned. "You do know that if I go missing, Mom will know that it was you who did it."
Big D rolled his eyes. "Just do it," he said.
He was still smiling too much, and his eyes were still too big and bright with excitement to my liking. As far as I knew at that point, behind that door was a room full of hazardous materials that could knock down a first degree murder verdict to involuntary manslaughter.
I think Big D sensed my hesitation. "Look. This will only take a few seconds. It'll be over before you know it," he said as he walked over to a switch a few steps away.
I eyed him. "I'm sure it would," I said.
Since he wouldn't budge and I didn't really think he would do something that Eddy would only be too happy to do, I turned to face the doors and closed my eyes.
I heard a beep then a swish.
After that, Big D slapped his hands on my shoulders and then slowly led me forward. "Okay. Three steps down. Be careful," he said as he led me down.
The first thing I noticed was the smell. The smell of smoke was gone. Even the smell of cement, which filled the air when I wandered down there a few days ago, was gone, too. There was just clean air and the great scent of new equipment.
Anticipating where we were going, I asked Big D if I can open my eyes.
"Not yet," he said, slightly laughing, because I think he knew that I knew. "Oh, but it's going to be so cool once you see it…" He talked on and on about what to expect. I did try to listen, but a part of my mind was too busy envisioning what it would look like once I opened my eyes that parts of what he said were a blur.
I guess Big D was too busy to pay full attention, too. He didn't notice that we were heading towards a wall, and he drove me up against it.
"Ow?" I said, instinctively opening my eyes to look back at him.
"Sorry," he said. A few seconds later, he walked up towards the end of the tunnel. He stood there, glanced at the room, and then looked at me with a smile. "Here," he nodded to the room. "What do you think?"
I walked towards him, already impressed by how cool the tunnel looked, what with the design and the lighting. But when I stepped into the lab, there was only one word that came up to my mind. "Whoa."
Everything looks awesome! I mean, sure, there were still some parts that needs to be finished, some loose wires and unfinished panels here and there, but everything still looks so cool. I've seen the floor plan before. Big D had allowed me to collaborate with him, and he had shown me the blueprints. I had been amazed by how he had planned to put things together, but to see it in person? I was completely floored.
There were many things I love about it. For one, it was well lit. Big D explained that he had cost-effective bulbs installed so that the electric bill, seeing that we're still down on the money side of things, wouldn't be too high. They're still of good quality, though. Plus, he said that surprisingly, using solar energy to power a percent of the equipment in there is working much better than he thought it would.
The compartmentalization was a great addition, too. There was a lot of space down there. Big D even said that now, it doesn't feel like a maze.
The new control panels were easier to access. Not only that, all of them were also touch screen, with a few exceptions of some buttons necessary for manual controlling and a few switches. Wisely, Big D placed locks on them so Adam wouldn't accidentally collapse a floor because of his want to know what a button will do.
But my top favorite would have to be the capsules, and I think it showed by the way I just stood in front of those, gaping, taking in how wonderfully built they were.
That's probably why it almost startled me when Big D walked up behind me and said, "You wanna check it out?"
I looked back at him, eyes wide that he'd actually offered to let me have a go. "Can I?" I asked.
Big D nodded with a smile. "Just don't lean back too far," he said. "They've got built in chip extractors and trust me—when it pinches, it will take the skin off your neck."
Excitedly, I stepped into the middle capsule, which will probably belong to Chase. I've stepped inside their capsules before, so I could tell the difference: more spacious, looks nice, much more comfortable. Before I could ask where the door was, the remainder of the glass slid up, containing me inside it.
"Do you think they'll like it?" Big D asked as he watched me.
"Like it? I think they'll love it!" I said, examining the details in the capsule. I looked at him. "This is so cool, Big D."
"Yeah. It all turned out nicely, didn't it?" Big D said, turning around to look at the lab.
As we took in everything, I realized that the excitement Big D had over seeing the result of his hard work is very similar to the excitement engineers probably feel when they had designed and built the home their family will live in. I felt a degree of it because I contributed to a fair number of features in the new lab, but Big D probably took in the full pleasant impact of it, knowing that he had accomplished something good. There he had rebuilt a new home for his kids, and he had something to do with that.
From the look on his face, I could tell he loved it, mostly because he knew what it would mean for Adam, Bree and Chase.
The glass slid downward when I stepped forward. Leaving the capsule, I walked up to Big D. "You really love them, don't you?" I asked.
He faced me, a light smile on his face as he thought about it. "Yeah," he sighed contentedly. "Yeah, I really do."
I nodded, smiling back.
Big D smirked a little later. "Oh, yeah. There's something else I haven't showed you." He took a small remote from the cyber desk. Then, he clicked on it.
A fragment of the floor to our left lowered down, only to be replaced by one of the best things I've ever seen in my entire life. I heard a gasp, then a high-pitched girly giggle. I looked at Big D, and it wasn't him.
Yep. You got me.
I started pointing to my new mission specialist desk with my right then pointed at myself with my left while turning manically left and right like a crazed sprinkler.
All I saw was Big D grinning, heard was him saying "It's all yours," before I broke out in a sprint in a race to check out my new desk. I doubt I can even begin to name everything that's on it. Big D packed it with so many programs (reasonable ones in a reasonable amount of control, of course) that I didn't know which one to explore first. I was just clicking, swiping, typing on, minimizing and maximizing any feature that I found interesting.
When I stopped, it hit me that my desk, like the capsules, was something he designed and built by himself. It doesn't escape my notice either that, really, it's a junior version of his cyber desk.
I wanted to say many things, most of which would and should only be blurted out by a six year old, but I guess the way I stared at him was enough for Big D.
He shook his head. "You're welcome," he said simply. "Just promise me you won't mention any of this to Adam, Bree or Chase, okay?"
I nodded. "Okay," I said. A thought occurred to me, and soon I was smiling but also slightly frowning. "Are you sure you and Douglas are related?" I asked after contrasting my general view of him against my general view of Douglas.
Big D smiled. "I know what you mean," he said, patting me on the shoulder. He laughed. "I'm more awesome, aren't I? With much better hair?"
Asked too soon.
I think my general view needs some recalibration.
When we came back upstairs, Adam and Chase were almost finished with the game. Surprisingly, Adam was beating Chase badly, but I suspected that Chase was just letting him win.
"So. How bad was it?" Chase asked as I sat back down with them.
I pretended to sigh sadly. "Bad. Big D said I can't talk about it," I said.
"Ooh," Adam and Chase said in unison.
"Yeah. Yeah," I said, and I left it at that. When I looked up, I saw Big D making his way out of the kitchen but before he left, he shot me a thumbs up.
I decided to write this entry earlier than usual for many reasons: (1) I'm using it as a convenient excuse to avoid doing homework; (2) everyone's busy downstairs at this hour of the day, which means the chance of them seeing me with this notebook is less likely, and (3) I heard talk that Eddy was going to be revived, and I'm not about to let him have ammo for jokes that could last for weeks.
Not only those, I also wanted to remember as much as I could from the conversation and about the lab. This is the reason I'm here for, after all.
It's funny how things turn out. For us it's always one chaos after another, some chaos more welcome than others. But, you know, I think we're going to be okay. Big D's flight stunt not only gained enough money for the family, it also gained him a good battalion of interested investors. Mom's pay-per-view report, to her surprise, turned out to be a hit. Adam, Bree and Chase are about to get a nice surprise in a few days, with the new lab and the new capsules.
And I got a new desk in the basement.
It's all good, and things are only bound to look up from here.

Leo Francis Dooley

The Bree Chronicles
In the Jet-Wing, Chase couldn't use his magnetism app on the jet-wing because of what it's made out of. So, what material is it made out of? Answers are optional, reviews are always appreciated! Hopefully the next one would be posted soon!
Have a great weekend, everybody!
