Chapter Thirty Five

Elijah pushed the door open of Katherine's hospital room, trying to figure out how he was going to tell her that she had lost one of her twin daughters and that she was still carrying it.

Katherine was sitting up on her bed looking tired and worn out. She forced a small smile. "Hi."

Elijah gave her a soft smile. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired." She responded. "These drugs really knock you out. Where is everyone?"

"Rebekah is waiting in the waiting room." Elijah said as he pulled up a chair and sat next to her. "And Klaus and Stefan are at home. Katerina, do you remember what happened? Who took you?"

"My sister." Katherine managed. "Milena, she is a Traveler which means she puts her spirit into somebodies else's body. She's been chasing me for the past 500 years. She was torturing me when you came here . . . blaming me for everything. Maybe she's right."

"No, she isn't." Elijah insisted, trying to wrap his mind on what Katherine had just said. "Katerina, I need to tell you something, though now it's probably not the right time."

Katherine's eyes narrowed. "Tell me."

"You lost one of the babies, one of the twins died because of the torturing," Elijah said slowly. "The doctors couldn't do anything to save her and I don't know why, but Klaus' blood wasn't working. The baby is still inside you, the doctors want you to wait a few more weeks or until birth so that it doesn't disturb or harm the other baby to get her out. I am so sorry, sweetheart."

There was a huge lump in her throat as her eyes welled up with tears, but she refused to let the tears fall. "She's dead?" She choked out. "One of my babies is dead? But why? Why-"

Elijah squeezed her shoulder. "I am so sorry, sweetheart."

"Does Klaus know?"

He nodded.

She whimpered. "Is he angry?"

"He's hurt." Elijah corrected.

Katherine gritted her teeth. "I'm going to kill her, I'm going to kill Milena if it's the last thing I do," she said. "I'm going to make her pay, I'm going to make her suffer, Elijah."

Elijah hugged her tighter. "It's going to be ok, Katerina." He murmured. "It's going to be ok, you need to rest. I promise someone is going to pay for this."

There was a trail of bodies leading to Klaus' art studio. Not to mention blood on the walls and broken limbs. Stefan couldn't help but sigh, even though he was supposed to be feeling sympathetic. Another Klaus' rampage. Those weren't pretty.

He found Klaus inside holding a paintbrush and in the middle of painting a very dark looking painting. He was drinking from a bottle of vodka.

Before Klaus could even greet Stefan, Stefan flashed in front of him and threw the bottle of whisky out the window.

Klaus threw him a dirty look. "I wasn't finish with that."

"What is this, Klaus?" he said motioning to the bodies around him. "You've been getting messy, don't you think the people won't start to wonder when the list of missing people keeps growing."

"That is none of my concern and I suggest that if you don't want to be one of those bodies that you leave right now. Don't you and my sister have your wedding to plan?"

"Klaus," Stefan said. "I'm sorry about your daughter, neither your nor Katherine . . . well, it shouldn't have happened. We dropped our guard, we were manipulated by the witches, but next time-"

"What's the point, Stefan?" Klaus snapped as he threw the painting to the floor. "My daughter is dead and no matter how prepared we are, what's the point she isn't going to brought back to life?"

"I know your hurting, and I know you're in pain." Stefan grasp Klaus by the shoulders. "But now is not the reason for you to decide that you don't care, because you still have another daughter, and you still have Katherine. And we need to find out who's behind this before we all end up dead."

"There's no point now," Klaus removed himself from Stefan. "It's over. They won."

"How are you doing?" Stefan asked as he handed Rebekah a cup of cold coffee.

"Not so good." Rebekah took a sip. "I feel bad for Kathrine and Nik, because even though they have both done terrible things, losing a child it's a terrible thing."

"How is Katherine doing? Stefan asked.

"Elijah says that she is in shock and very angry." Rebekah explained as she looked up and saw a light in Klaus' art studio. "She's hurting, and he's hurting as well. That is the bad thing about Nik, when he's hurting he refused to talk to anyone. How is he doing?"

Stefan wrapped an arm around Rebekah's shoulder. "Reacting just like I thought he would, he's angry, he's looking for a scapegoat. But I think he just doesn't want to admit how devastated he is of losing one of his daughters." He looked at her. "I know that this is a bad moment, Rebekah, but how would you feel about leaving town tonight? It might be your only chance, Klaus is vindictive right now and he won't hesitate to blame or use someone as a scapegoat and I don't want that person to be you."

Rebekah hesitated before shaking her head. "No, I'm sorry, I can't leave, Stefan. I don't care what Klaus says or wants, I'm not going to leave when my family is hurting and needs me."
