Chapter Forty Two
"What do you mean, Katherine's dead?" Rebekah said after a while. Rebekah and Stefan had been waiting the emergency waiting room while they waited for Elijah and Klaus. Stefan's jaw tightened, but he didn't offer any other reaction. "Are you sure? What happened?"
"The nurses says that she went into cardiac arrest, they couldn't save her," Elijah said faintly. He was still in shocked. He couldn't believe that he won't ever see his Katerina again. He should have tried harder, he should have tried harder to save her. He should have known that Katerina would not rest until Milena was dead. "The baby survived."
"She's human." Klaus said with a confused glanced. "I have no idea, why."
"What will happen to, Katherine?" Stefan said after a while. "Now that she's-"
Elijah looked away.
"I will arrange a funeral for her." Klaus cleared his throat. "Along with our other daughter."
The morgue was big, cold, and depressing Elijah didn't want to be in it in the first place, but he felt that he must. One because he wouldn't believe that Katerina was dead until he saw it will his own eyes and two because he wanted to say goodbye.
"Elijah," there was a small, rare sound of pity from Klaus. "You don't have to be here."
"I know I don't have too." Elijah responded back. "I need to be here, I need to pay my respects, to say goodbye."
Klaus nodded as they went towards the last table where Katherine's body was covered with a sheet. Klaus hesitated a bit, before Elijah nodded as he pulled it away. The sight was even more grisly than they had anticipated. Katherine looked asleep, but she was pale and cold like a sleeping doll.
Elijah touched her cheek with trembling fingers. "Katerina."
Katherine suddenly let out a loud gasp as she looked around them with scared eyes. "What the hell?!" she shrieked as she sat up and switch her gaze from Klaus to Elijah. She had no idea what had happened, she just felt like she had been sleeping a very long time. She looked around and saw the bodies around her. "What the hell am I doing in a morgue?"
"You died, Katerina." Elijah whispered, his voice breaking. He could hardly believe that she was alive. "But now you're alive, how is that possible you heart wasn't beating and you can't drink vampire blood-"
"The second baby, they never took her out until just a while ago," she raised her head slowly. "Which means that even if they did, I still had some vampire blood from her in my system when I died."
"You're in transition." Klaus murmured.
"No," Elijah frowned as he looked into her eyes. "Are you sure?"
"There's only one way to find out," Klaus exited the room leaving Katherine and Elijah alone.
Elijah kissed Katherine as he squeezed her shoulder. "I am so glad you're alive, you gave me quite a scare, Katerina." He murmured.
"Elijah, the important thing is that I'm alive, sort of." Katherine said. "Is the baby-"
Elijah nodded. "The baby is fine. You're fine."
Klaus came into the room once again dragging a compelled nurse who was bleeding from her neck. "Drink." He insisted. "It's the only way we'll know."
Katherine felt her hunger growing as she watched the blood drip from the nurse's neck. She wiped some blood with her fingers and brought it to her mouth. The taste was familiar and heavenly.
After they had compelled the doctors and nurses and whoever else knew that Katherine had "died" they moved Katherine to a small room in the maternity ward. Katherine was eager to see her daughter.
Rebekah who had quickly become attached to her niece placed the baby gently in Katherine's awaiting arms. Katherine's lip wobbled in excitement as she held her baby in her arms. She was asleep, but she moved slightly every few seconds. Katherine smiled. She was her daughter. Her daughter, and no one was going to take her away.
Klaus was standing next to her, not saying a sound but looking at his daughter.
Elijah cleared his throat and motioned to Rebekah and Stefan. "We should give them some privacy." The three of them left, leaving Klaus and Katherine alone.
"She has dark hair like you." Klaus said referring to the small, dark little curls that were barely visible upon her small head. "She's human, love."
Katherine looked at Klaus perplexed. "But I thought she was supposed to be super witch werewolf vampire baby."
Klaus shrugged. "I don't know what happened."
"Milena." Katherine said after a second. "Before she died, she did one last spell. I'm guessing she turned our daughter human to continue her punishment even from hell. She knows that as a human baby she will be more fragile and delicate."
Klaus squeezed her shoulder. "We'll protect her, Katerina if someone gets under a 200 mile radius from her I will hang them from a tree for everyone to see."
Katherine smiled as she petted her daughter's cheek. "We need to give her a name, Klaus. We can't call her baby."
"How about Kassandra?" Klaus asked.
Katherine gave a small nod. "She does look like a Kassandra, plus we will all have K's in our names. I have always liked the name Samantha."
"That could be her middle name," Klaus offered. "Kassandra Samantha Mikaelson."
The day of the funeral for their second daughter-the little twin that had not survived was held on a bright, sunny day with only the Original family, Katherine, and Stefan in attendance. Holding the ceremony was Father Kieran.
Katherine felt a knot in her throat as she rested her head against Elijah's shoulder. She held Kassandra tightly in her arms as they stood and watched the tiny little grave with the name: Evelyn Hope Mikaelson Petrova printed on it. Two little statues of an angel stood on the side of the grave as if guarding it.
"Are you ok?" Elijah whispered.
Katherine managed a nod. "I'm fine, just sad." She glanced back at Klaus. He seemed to have an emotionless expression on his face, but all of them had noticed that he hadn't taken his eyes off the grave.
"Klaus-"Katherine started.
But Klaus didn't let her finish. He placed a white rose on the grave. "Rest in peace, little one. Let us go."
