Chapter 20: Dinner Tonight!
KIM'S POV
I ran into the base and got ready for bed. I didn't take the chain and ring off of my neck. As I laid my head down on my pillow, I played with the ring. I can't believe how great this all feels. I have Jack in my life, a great job, cheerleading, wonderful friends, and my dad is actually coming around. Maybe we will actually stay here for me to finish high school and I will get to enjoy all of this for awhile. I fell asleep thinking how great that would be.
I woke up the next morning from the perfect night's sleep. I stretched and got up to take a quick shower and get ready for school. I put on my black and white polka dot halter dress with the skirt that flares out perfectly. With a simple red belt and cropped cardigan and my fabulous red wedges, I was set. I only had to fix my hair and makeup to feel like the look was complete. I pulled my hair back in a loose braid at the back of my neck leaving most of it in a long ponytail. I put on red fingernail polish and lipstick and then added some black and white jewelry. I did a twirl looking in the mirror before I walked out of my little room here at the base.
"Good morning, Kimmy." Dad said.
"Morning, Dad." I replied getting something to eat quickly.
"You look really nice today. Is this a special occasion?" He asked.
"No. Jack will be here to pick me up for school soon." I replied.
"Oh. Are you going to ride that bike with him everywhere?" He asked.
I looked over at him and smiled. "Yes, Dad. I love riding motorcycles. I never understood why you got rid of yours." I said.
His face changed to a serious one. "It was just time to." He replied.
I realized that by bringing it up, I had made him think about Mom. Even after all this time, he has a really hard time when he thinks about her. I wish I knew more so that I could help him, but he won't talk about it. I tried to change the subject.
"Dad, how long until we can go home?" I asked.
He snapped out of it and smiled at me. "It will be a few more days and then we will be able to go back to the house." He answered.
"Ok. What do you want for dinner tonight?" I asked. "I can go to the market on the way home. I'm sure Jack won't mind."
"Oh that would be great. I will make you a list, but I am grilling so you won't have to do too much of it on your own!" He replied.
"Sounds great." I answered. "I am going to go grab my bag and then I will need your list."
"Alright." He said as he hurriedly wrote out a grocery list for me. As I came back out, he was standing there with a list and money. I gave him a hug and put all of it in my bag before heading out the door to wait on Jack.
I sat down on a bench outside and read a book while I was waiting. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and I jumped a little bit until I saw that it was Justin.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." He said.
"No, it's ok. I guess I am just a bit jumpy with Tommy still being out there somewhere. How long are you guys going to hold the rest of them?" I asked thinking maybe I could get an answer out of him since my dad is so secretive.
"Well, I don't think he would be stupid enough to come here. I'm not sure, but I don't think your dad has any intentions of letting them go anytime soon. I mean he is officially holding them for the police and they did kidnap you and vandalize your house." He replied.
"Yeah. I guess they did do that." I said thinking back to when they had me. I heard Jack's motorcycle coming and so I stood up and waved at him.
JACK'S POV
I pulled up to find Kim looking amazing as always and that Justin guy with her yet again. Maybe I will have to keep a closer eye on him than I thought. I parked my bike and climbed off to give Kim a hug.
She ran over into my arms which instantly made me smile. "Hi, Jack. Are you ready?" She said.
"Absolutely!" I replied. "You look wonderful." I added quickly giving her a kiss on the cheek.
"Thank you very much. We better get going or we will be late." She said. It is so cute that she is worried about being late. I smile at her and then she looks over at Justin and waves. "See you later, Justin." She said as I climb back on my bike and wait for her to jump on.
Kim wraps her arms around me and I look over at Justin. "Bye, Justin. We will see you later." I said with a slight glare in my eyes and smirk on my face before I flew away from the base.
By the time we made it to the school, there were several cars in the lot and a lot of students hanging out outside. As I pulled over and parked my bike, I sensed several pairs of eyes staring at us. I helped Kim off the bike and climbed off wrapping my arms around her waist and pulling her to me for a quick kiss.
She smiled at me. "Trying to make sure everyone sees that I am your girl?" Kim asked teasingly looking at me with a smirk on her face.
"Maybe. Does that bother you?" I asked still holding her in my arms.
She pushed up on her tiptoes and kissed me lightly on the lips. "Actually, I don't mind at all." She said and then she looked around us a bit until she saw Donna and smirked at her. "Besides, I want to make sure that some people know that you are my guy now, too." And she turned her eyes back to me with the best smile on it.
I let her go and just wrapped my arm around her back as we walked into the building together. I noticed that I was getting some glares and so was she. We got our things out of our lockers and then headed to our first class. This was definitely going to be a great day with Kim on my arm.
As the day went on, we only had a few classes that we weren't together and I walked her to the door and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek as she walked in and sat down with Julie. I made sure to check the room out to see who I might need to keep an eye on. I can't help but be a little overprotective of this relationship because I have never felt like this before.
KIM'S POV
"Hey Jules." I said as I sat down by her.
"You two are so cute together." She replied with a smile.
"Thanks. I wish he wasn't quite so worried about staring down every guy that might decide to speak to me. I mean I am still trying to get to know everyone here." I said with a small giggle and Julie joined me.
"I think it is sweet. I have never seen Jack like this with anyone before." She added.
We talked and laughed until class started and then we tried to pay attention. As we walked out of class together, I was surprised that Jack was not waiting outside the door for me, but I just walked on to my locker with Jules at my side.
I grabbed my things to change for P.E. quickly still expecting Jack to be at my side any minute. I was tapped on the shoulder and turned to see Liam and Louis behind me.
"Hey guys." I said with a smile as I saw them.
"Hi, Kim. You look really nice today." Liam said.
"Thanks." I said.
"Do you guys have practice tonight?" Louis asked.
"No. Do you guys?" I asked back to him.
"Yeah for a little while, but then we will be at Phil's to play around 6." Louis replied.
"I won't be at Phil's until about 7 tonight. I am having dinner with my Dad and Jack." I said.
"Oh. Well have fun with that." Liam said hesitantly.
I walked over closer to him and nudged him with my elbow. "Smile, friend. I will see you at Phil's later." I said casually trying to remind him that we are just friends now and he promised to behave himself.
He smiled back at me and shook his head. "Yeah, yeah. I guess we will see you then." He replied tapping me on the nose with his finger gently.
We all laughed and then I saw Jack come around the corner of the hall. I waved at him and he smiled at me as he quickly crossed the hall. "Hey, Liam. Nice to see you guys." Jack said smirking at them as he gently grabbed my hand pulling me to him.
"Hi, Jack." Liam replied coldly.
"Ok, well I have to get to gym so I guess I will see you all later." I said trying to get them to loosen up as quickly as I could.
"Alright. I will walk you there, beautiful." Jack said smiling at me and then when he thought I wasn't looking, he glared back at Liam.
"See you guys later." I said over my shoulder.
As we walked down the hall, I looked up at Jack with questioning eye. "Is everything ok?" I asked.
"Yeah. It's fine." He said. "Sorry I took so long to get to you." He added smiling at me.
"You are a really horrible liar. I just want you to know that." I said laughing lightly while I looked up at him.
"Oh really." He said looking at me with a mischievous grin. "And just what am I lying about?" He added.
"Well, something is bothering you." I said looking up at him.
"I guess I just can't ever be late meeting you at your class again and then there won't be anything to bother me." I said leaning over closer to her staring into her perfect doe eyes.
"I guess so." I replied teasingly. "But you know you have nothing to worry about with Liam or anyone else really." I added smiling up at him as we reached the gym doors and I turned to face him throwing my arms around his neck.
"I am glad to hear it, but Liam doesn't scare me." He said inching closer to me.
"Good." I replied reaching up on my tiptoes and kissing him before pulling back. "Besides the only one you really have to worry about is my dad…at dinner tonight." I added teasingly as I spun around quickly to run into gym, but he caught my arm pulling me back to him.
"You think that's funny." He said and I nodded my head as he started tickling me.
I was laughing and if Julie hadn't pulled me away, I think I would have burst out into full laughter. "See you later, Jackie." I said as we disappeared into the gym.
The rest of the day went by really quickly and after classes were over, Jack and I walked out of the school together. "I have to grocery store." I said looking at him. "I can walk if you want me to." I added.
He held my hand tightly. "I don't think so. I will take you and then I will hang out at the base with you while you work on dinner." He replied.
"Perfect. We can do our homework, too." I added and he looked less than thrilled.
"I guess, but there are other things we can do, too." He said as he pulled me up to him and kissed me passionately.
"We will see." I said as we climbed onto his bike and took off.
I quickly gathered up the things I needed for our dinner and we headed back to the base. As we pulled up to the base, Jack's bike made a few odd sounds.
"Kim, I think I am going to have to figure out what is wrong with the bike real quick. Do they have any where I can look at it?" Jack asked.
"Oh yeah. They have a great garage here." I said showing him out to the garage. I made sure that my dad's men knew that Jack needed to do some adjustments on his bike and they said that was fine. "I would help you, but I have to get dinner started." I added.
"No problem. I will be in in a little bit." He said kissing me quickly. "Besides I kind of like the idea of my girl making dinner for me." He added teasingly.
I punched him lightly in the side. "Very funny. I may be able to cook in the kitchen, but I can do a lot more than that and you know it. In fact, Mr. Brewer, I believe I could probably drive right past you with the right bike." I replied teasingly.
"Yeah, yeah." He replied. "Too bad you don't have a bike of your own."
"Actually, it is a good thing that she doesn't have a bike of her own. I can help you sup yours up if you want." I heard my dad say. I turned around with a smile to greet my dad.
"Yeah. You guys have fun with that and I will start getting dinner ready." I said with a smile back at Jack while I walked back to our living quarters. I started working on everything in the kitchen and got stuff ready for Dad to grill, too. I couldn't help but wonder how things were going with the two of them in the garage.
DANNY'S POV
I decided that I was going to have to give this guy a chance and what better way to get to know him then to work on a bike together. So while we worked, we talked.
"So Jack tell me a little more about yourself and your family." I said.
"There isn't really a lot to tell. I live on my own and take care of everything myself." He replied.
"Where are your parents?" I asked.
"My mom died when I was young and my dad has been in jail for the last several years." Jack said quickly.
I think he expected me to be shocked, but I had figured it was something like that. "You aren't alone. I didn't have my parents with me when I was about your age. I turned out alright." I said and then I decided that I should open up to him more than that. "Jack, I was part a biker gang, too. That's actually how I met Kim's mom. Her name was Sandy and we fell in love even though we were total opposites. She was perfect and Kimmy is just like her."
JACK'S POV
I was listening to Kim's dad and didn't know what to say. I couldn't believe he was telling me this, but I appreciated it. "So can I ask why you are so against Kim and me?" I asked.
He looked at me and shook his head. "I don't know if you really want that answer." He replied.
I turned toward him and away from my bike for a minute. "I do want to know." I said.
"Ok. Well, like I said Sandy and I were in love and opposites. She quickly became my whole world. We eventually got married and had Kim. I was still a part of my gang and eventually that cost me one of the two most important things in my life. Kim doesn't even know what really happened to her mom because I wanted to protect her from that. One of our rivals surprised us when we were all out one night. I tried to ride away quickly, but one of their guys caught up to me and pulled Sandy off the back bike while we riding down the road. I crashed trying to stop to make sure she was ok. She wasn't moving and I started beating the guy. When the authorities got there, they barely pulled me off of him in time and I saw them taking Sandy away in an ambulance." He paused taking a breath and I was sitting there frozen in shock.
Then he continued. "By the time I got to the hospital, Sandy was gone. I spent some time there and then I went home to tell our little girl that she would never see her mommy anymore. After that, Kim is the only thing that matters to me. I left that life behind completely to keep Kim safe. I joined the service and we started moving around. When she got with Dylan and I found out what he was doing to her, I took her away from it. I won't let her fall back in to that life again."
"I'm sorry that you went through that. I wish I could make this better for you somehow." I said.
He looked at me and replied. "Jack, you may not really want to say that."
"Why?" I asked.
"Jack, the best way you can help me is to find a way to Kim go. I like you Jack. I really do, but one day something is going to happen and someone is going to realize that the best way to hurt you is to hurt Kim." He said and his words hit me like a ton of bricks. I would do anything to keep Kim safe, but let her go…I don't think I can do that.
I made sure to look him straight in the eyes as I spoke. "I know that I can keep Kim safe. I will make sure that she is never in a situation like that." I promised him.
"Jack, I hope that you are right, but you have to know that I thought the same thing about Sandy. I let her and Kim down. I will never let Kim down again. I need you to understand that I will do whatever I have to to make sure she is safe." He told me and I didn't feel that he was threatening me. I could tell that he was just making sure that I understood him completely and I did.
"I can see your point, but I can't let her go. I promise you she will be safe with me." I told him.
He smiled at me slightly and then he said, "Ok. You want to see something?"
"Sure." I replied and followed him over to a corner in the garage where he pulled a cover off of one of the nicest motorcycles I have ever seen. It needed some attention and had been obviously ignored for a little while, but it had everything on it. I bent down to get a closer look at it and was really impressed. In fact, it might have been love at first sight. "This is awesome! Why don't you have it out?" I asked.
"Kim thinks I got rid of it, but I couldn't. There are sad memories, but there are a lot more happy ones. I can help you fix up your bike, too, if you want?" He said.
"That would be great." I replied and we both heard Kim calling to us so he quickly covered it back up and we headed inside to have dinner. I hadn't pictured this night going this way, but I feel like I have a better understanding of her dad and I am glad that we both want the same thing. We may not agree on the best way to get it, but I will show him.
