Chapter 10: The Sweetest Nightmares

"Would you like a bite?" April asked coldly to the monster that sat against the opposite wall.

"It's your food." Monstertello snarled, flicking his tail ever so lightly.

"Oh are you not hungry? Did you eat a couple passerby when you were finished with the Purple Dragons?" The redhead raised her eyebrows.

The beast across the way growled and dug his claws into the dirtied sewer floor. Him and his captive had been on thin ice ever since they came back from their topside adventure. Neither of them spoke as they ventured the tunnels and when they reached their home, April took her food to the farthest side of the room and ordered the beast as far from her as he possibly could be without leaving the room. Donatello soon regretted his actions that he took with the Purple Dragons, but April didn't understand that he did everything he did to keep her safe.

"Human flesh isn't exactly my idea of a gourmet meal." Donnie retorted.

"Then let me ask again, would you like a bite?" April half smiled.

"Yes ma'am, if it's not too much trouble!"

"Catch."

The blue eyed beauty tossed a piece of her dinner over to the beast but her throw landed short and the food collided with the ground. Donatello, being a mutant monster who had lived in the sewers his entire life, didn't mind picking it up off the ground and nonchalantly popping it into his mouth. The delicate nature ended when he began to rip the dumpling in his mouth up with his razor sharp teeth and chomp noisily. April looked over in disgust. Even though she had never been one of those girls who fathomed over etiquette, this display was disgusting. The girl cautiously walked over and plopped down next to him.

"Those are actually really good if you get some of it in your mouth." She joked, looking at the shreds of food on the floor.

Monstertello stopped murdering the contents in his mouth and looks down at the ground. He smiled and chuckled at the girl besides him.

"I'm sorry...for how I acted up there..." He apologized.

"I'm not necessarily mad, I'm just confused. Why did you act that way? You could've just scared the Purple Dragons away but instead you nearly killed them!" April wrung her hands together, staring out at the opposite wall where she used to sit.

"I did it to protect you...I didn't want you walking out and being mugged or hurt or anything." Don's eyes fell to the ground as he nibbled on the remaining food in his mouth.

"I would've been fine..." April faded.

Soon the two were submerged into a awkward yet gentle silence. There was barely any light and soon the entire underground room would be swallowed by darkness, but neither of them had even thought of slumber until now.

"You need to get some sleep." Monstertello told the girl.

"Sleep where? I don't see a cot or anything." April yawned.

"Here. Follow me."

The beast led the human over to the wall and centered himself so that he was in the middle of the room. He then flopped down lazily on the ground and curled up like a giant cat, his tail wrapped around his body and ended near his forearms where he had created a place where April could snuggle right in against his arms and chest. Donnie looked up at her and flashed a hopeful fanged smile. Sure it wasn't the fanciest of arrangements, the arms of a monster, but it was better than the cold floor.

"I don't know Donnie...what if you need to...move in the middle of the night..." April nervously stuttered. She was afraid of Monstertello having one of his fits in the middle of the night and hurting her.

Donatello could see the fear plastered on her face and hiding behind her eyes. He hated the fact that she had to be afraid of him, he hated himself and his stupid temper for ruining a good chunk of their relationship. His red eyes widened and before he knew it, April was snuggling into him, the silky fabric of her dress and her beautiful hair tickling his rough skin.

"You...trust me?" Don murmured as he tightened his grip.

"Forever." She whispered sleepily, resting her hands near her head.

"How? I'm a hideous and monstrous-"

"I'm gonna stop you right there." April cut him off. "Mr. Chocolatey Eyes..."

As April rested back into him, he felt his eyes go wide. The air stung them but just for a second, he considered the possibility that he may be one step, or two eyes, closer to becoming himself. If April O'Neil could trust him after every event of that day, he was pretty sure he could fall asleep with ease. Donatello looked at his captive's peaceful figure and it soothed him slowly into slumber.

April jolted upwards, awaking to sweat dousing her forehead and her body cold and shaking. She looked around and saw utter darkness, not a spot of light whatsoever. Realization poured over her as she rubbed the tough skin that was wrapped around her to create her makeshift bed. She was asleep in Monstertello's arms in the depths of the sewers.

A terrible nightmare had wracked her brain, giving her the aftermath of a headache and dizziness. The surprisingly light sound of Donnie's quiet snores calmed her so she later against him and attempted to recollect her thoughts and sort out what had just happened inside her swirling mind.

It was a wraithlike creature that invaded her dreams, unpleasant and daunting, it had one arm and extremely long, curved, and bony fingers. It was all black except for it's white fanged smile and glowing red eyes that threatened to pierce right through her. The wraith wore a long black robe and the hole where it's other arm should've been was surrounded by the choppy and uneven fabric of the draping. Blood splattered her dreamscape, turning it into a nightmare and the dark figure of her active mind chased her endlessly through the red, sticky liquid until the stench overwhelmed her and caused her to fall over, unconscious. This is where she woke up in the tight grip of the turtle monster that she had agreed to live with.

"It's just a dream, April..." She told herself as she stared at what she presumed was the ceiling. The darkness was so thick she couldn't see her hand in front of her face.

"It's okay April...your with mommy now. Look for the light in the darkness..." Mrs. O'Neil's words echoed around her daughter's mind. If only she was actually there to whisper them delicately into her ear.

"Mom..." The auburn haired girl murmured into Monstertello's skin.

"A...April?" Donnie's voice broke through the dark gently. "Are you okay? Did I hurt you?"

"Of course you didn't, silly." April smiled at how paranoid he was.

"Why are you up? Did I wake you?"

"No, Donnie. You didn't do anything wrong! I just had a bad dream..." The human girl wiped her sweaty forehead.

"A bad dream?! Can I help you?! Are you okay?!" Don squirmed a bit before the girl rested her hand on his shoulder, halting him.

"I'm fine! Calm down!" She exclaimed.

"What was it about?" The beast asked.

"There was this monst- wraith! There was this wraith, and he was chasing me down the sewer tunnels which were filled with rivers of blood. The smell was so realistic, Donnie...I fainted and I'm guessing it got me but I woke up so I don't know what happened..." April explained, fading off into the dark as she neared the end of her explanation.

"You know your safe, right? I'm not going to let anyone hurt you." Donnie cautiously began to rub circles onto the girl's back, careful not to prick her with his claw.

"I know..." April hugged Donnie tightly, her breaths slowly grew steadier. "Please don't leave..."

"I never will. That's a promise." The turtle mutant murmured into the girls hair.

They rested in the black stillness, clinging to each other as if they were the worlds oldest lovers, as if they were professionals when it came to this kind of comfort, but really they were just two confused teenagers attempting to cling to the little sanity they had. For once, they didn't worry about if they were hurting each other or who may hurt them over the span of the next couple of days, but for the couple of hours they had together, you could never say that it was wasted time. Enfolded together in the corner of a damp sewer room, April and Donatello fell asleep to the rhythm of their equal breaths and the pitter patter of the water droplets that fell around them.

"It's the Kraang!" Leonardo cried, drawing his katanas.

"Back here, Murakami dude. You'll be safe back here." Michelangelo led the disoriented old man behind the counter. "Now stay down. We'll have these bad dudes outta here soon."

"Mikey! A little help!" Raph screeched as he shoved a Kraang against the wall.

"Sorry!" The younger turtle sprang into action.

Casey blocked the windows with anything he could find so nobody would be able to see the battle raging inside the small restaurant. Hoping no confused pedestrians would attempt to find out what was going on, the hockey player grab his baseball bat and starting cornering a Kraang droid that was threatening Murakami for information.

"Casey! Hold that Kraang bot! See what he's demanding!" Leo ordered.

The black haired boy held the robot alien to the wall and dug his heels into the floor. Casey bared his mangled teeth and growled at the droid like a dog just as a final attempt to scare him into giving him information on why they were here.

"Where is the turtle known was Donatello? Kraang has been informed he has the one known as April O'Neil."

"Why do you need Donnie?!" Mikey hollered.

"And how do you know he has April?" Raph added.

"Kraang has had a few...reliable sources. Ha ha. Ha ha." The robot laughed an extremely metallic and annoying type laugh.

Raph, who had already had his fill of the alien's antics, forcefully threw his sai into it's head which caused it to go limp in Casey's grasp. The human boy backed up and let the Kraang bot slump onto the ground along with the rest of it's newly fallen kind. Most of the droids had fled while they could considering they had valuable information for Kraang Prime that would need to be relayed to her upon their return. Those select few couldn't afford to be lost or else the Kraang would have to scrounge around to obtain all the information that they already had.

"What do you think they meant by reliable sources?" Casey asked.

"I don't know...if Donnie was here he could do something with their hard-drives to find out all their information but..." Leonardo trailed off.

"Hey guys! This Kraang guy has a bracelet!" Mikey exclaimed as he held up a robot hand with a small band around it's metal wrist.

"Mikey, why the shell would we care?" Raphael huffed.

"It's got words on it!"

"Fascinating." The red masked turtle rolled his eyes.

"It's a hospital band." Leo announced as he pulled the wristlet off of the droid.

"Why would the Kraang have a hospital band?" Raph asked.

"I don't know." The oldest turtle responded.

Leo turned the band around but it was blank. In frustration, he flipped it inside out to reveal the hospital seal along with a patient's name and ID number. His eyes widened and he read it over carefully a couple more times to make sure he wasn't just seeing things. Now he knew where the Kraang got their information.

"What does it say?" Mikey asked.

"The ID is 3276, the patient was in for a 'code red' case which means it's may be serious, they shattered their entire leg..." The leader began.

"What's the name?" Casey inquired.

"...Abigail Perri. One of Casey and April's best friends, an ally of ours." Leo said as he took a sharp breath.

"Abigail?! What did they do to her?" The black haired boy exclaimed.

"We need to go check the hospital and see if she's alright." Raph decided. Casey was already skating out the door by the time he had said this.

Soon the boys took to the rooftops as they had earlier, speeding off to the hospital that was in the distance. They would have Leonardo check the windows by walking along the edges until he found Abigail's room. After this part of the mission was completed, Raphael would bust in the window and they'd check up on the girl in question. Casey assumed the Kraang would question her because she was an ally of the turtles and April's best friend. She was also a witness to April's kidnapping and a victim of Monstertello's wrath so it seemed like Abby would be a likely candidate in the first place.

"I found a room with a clipboard. It read 3271." Leo called back to the gang.

"Abby's room is 3276." Mikey corrected.

"Try a couple windows down." Raph suggested.

The blue masked turtle inched down the ledge on the side of the building checking the clipboard's numbers as he went. Soon enough he came to a room where the blinds were drawn, but according to the previous numbers, this room should be Abigail's. Leo considered prying the door open with his katana, but the last thing he wanted to do was get caught by a nurse or a doctor so he decided to just try to listen through the glass. Steady, but heavy breathing could be heard from inside, but there was no other sound. The turtle silently waved the rest of his team over and they joined him on the ledge.

"Is she in there?" Casey asked, holding on to a part of the wall that jutted outwards so he wouldn't skate right off.

"I think so. Maybe you should go in first since your human." Leo said.

"Okay, but you guys'll have to help me through."

The three turtle boys moved around cautiously, careful not to loose their footing, and lifted Casey up so that no part of him touched the ledge below. After quietly prying the window open, they carefully planted Casey's skate-covered feet onto the floor. He had the drapery in his face and the other three boys backed away as the hockey player slowly removed the curtains from his eyes, not exactly sure what he would see when he unveiled his eyes to the room that smelled strongly of lotion and flowers.

"Abigail!"

"Casey?!"

"That's our queue!" Michelangelo laughed and the boys rolled into the hospital room.

"What are you guys doing here?" The girl who was laying in the bed exclaimed. She had her hair out of it's usual bun and her ruby red curls ran down her face and ended at her shoulders. She held the hospital gown at the front with her hands so it wouldn't fall.

"The Kraang invaded Murakami's shop and one of them had your hospital band." Leo stated, giving the girl back her band. "We wanted to know what they asked you and what they did to you."

"Before I answer, what's up win Donnie and April?" Abigail slipped the wristlet back on.

"We don't know except for the fact that Donnie's gotten more dangerous than ever. We need to subdue him before he hurts April." Casey explained. "He already hurt you, I can't let him hurt Red."

"So they're still out there...hmm. Anyway, about the Kraang, they invaded my room about an hour and half ago and demanded information about April. Of course I knew absolutely nothing considering I can't really go anywhere, so I just told them that. It didn't really fly with them..." Abigail explained.

"So did they just leave?" Casey asked.

"Well duh, of course not. Then I told them that I was out for revenge on Donnie to throw them off. They asked me to perfect the antidote they created for him using some of the iodine and other chemicals that the doctors were using. I agreed, and they took my bracelet so they had my identification when they came to retrieve it so I'm unbelievably relieved you guys are here." The girl explained her clever plan with fast hand gestures and a excited tone.

"So they just gave you the antidote?" Raph's eyes were wide.

"Well I tricked them into thinking that I was against Donnie. They want to keep that antidote away from you guys so that you can't change him back because they think that he'll eventually wipe you all out. Then they'll cure him, kill him, and take April." Abigail grimaced as she explained the final phase of the Kraang's plan.

"Wait Abigail! Do you have the antidote for Donnie?!" Leo asked eagerly.

"Right here, Leo." The fiery haired girl smiled and whisked out a syringe filled with a glowing purple liquid. The boys whooped and cheered for their luck that was finally starting to turn around.

"What are the Kraang gonna do with you when they find out you gave us the antidote?" Mikey asked Abby.

"It's okay, I'm going to be moved to another room soon so the doctors can inspect my leg some more. Apparently, it's more serious than they originally thought it would be. All the bones are broken and out of place all my skin is bloody and ripped up because of the metal parts that hold the table together cut it up. Now there's talk about blood poisoning and amputation from my loss of blood and how it mixed with blood from other victims and it's a mess! Donnie really caused a lot of trouble here in the hospital...I'm afraid." Abigail leaned back on her pillow and the boys noticed the blood that seeped through the blankets. They couldn't believe Donnie had done this to a friend.

"We're so sorry, Abigail. Donnie will be too." Leo sighed.

"Don't worry about it, just go get our two runaway lovers." The girl in the bed tried to muster a sincere smile.

"Here. Call if you need us." Casey said as he gave his phone to Abigail that contained all of the turtle's numbers.

"Thanks you puckhead." She blushed as she punched his arm.

"Yeah, yeah I saw that coming. Get well soon my fiery lovely." He said in a fake lovey-dovey tone that everyone ignored.

The turtles thanked the brave injured girl and vanished out of the way they came, making sure to lock the window right before moving along. It was late at night now and the boys decided that if they were going to start really hunting Donnie, they would need all the rest that they could get. With the antidote safe and secure, all the boys crashed fast into slumber on a rooftop.

Meanwhile, in the bowels of the sewer, a turtle and a girl that were being hunted by the world were fast asleep, unaware of how many more nightmares there were to come.
