Chapter 11: Monster, How Should I Feel?
Icy waves blew through the tunnels, crashing and foaming like the ocean against the rocks of figures huddled on the floor. The sheets of cold blowing through the air could've easily froze April O'Neil, given her hypothermia, or done some other freezing damage, but a wall repelled it all away. Two strong arms of a creature horrid kept her safe from certain harm. They froze in place, slightly shaking but not from the cold, from the fear that he would hurt his captive again. She wouldn't trust him if he did. He wouldn't trust himself if he did.
It was not a friendly day to be alive in New York. Funeral processions lined the streets of the recently fallen, church bells rang and organs played, sobbing came from almost every street corner. Smoke from trucks and cigarettes laced around edges, creating a thickness that would invade and encase your lungs if you took a large enough breath. Buildings would drop the last of their bricks as repairs began. Jackhammer noise waking up those who tried to sleep in order to escape the world. The full impact of Monstertello's wrath had settled in upon the city as the blood firmly crusted on the streets.
April opened her tired eyes in hope that she would find her bedroom at her Aunt Leslie's. Instead, she awoke to light spilling in through the familiar storm drain up above that hinted the few contents of the sewer room, one of them being a pile of terribly bloodstained clothes that the girl was sure she could never wear again. Donatello slept peacefully, his menacing appearance downsizing in his snores that came out in little squeaks as he breathed in and out.
"Donnie?" April whispered cautiously, not wanting him to fly into a rage upon awakening.
A slight snort and a small turn of the head is all she got in return. The auburn haired girl tapped his nose with a bit more confidence and determination than before. April hated to admit it, but she was starving. Murakami's food was delicious, but a few Pizza Gyoza weren't enough to keep you going until morning. She craved breakfast. Pancakes and waffles stacked up tall, sausage and bacon by the bucketful, and freshly squeezed orange juice on the side. The captive licked her lips, which were a little on the drier side from lack of liquid. Add that to the list of things she needed.
"Donnie!" April said again.
"Mmmph..." The beast murmured.
Much to the human's dismay, he turned over onto his side making her fall underneath him, only her head and arms popping out.
"Great." April sighed. "Donnie, you lug, this hurts! Your not exactly light!"The monster gave no response and left the girl to struggle under his immense weight. "Fine, I'll do it myself!"
With a grunt, April clawed the floor and attempted to drag herself out from underneath. The floor was flat and slick with whatever unknown liquid that rested there, so she couldn't get a proper grip. All the breath left her mouth in a huff, and she flopped to the ground in exhaustion. A few failed attempts later, April decided to try and use a new method.
"I'm sorry if this is a rude awakening, Donnie, but I'm seriously desperate at this point." April said. She then grabbed his tail that was barely in reach, and gave a giant tug. Donatello's eyes shot open and his giant arms immediately flew upwards.
"Donnie!"
"April?!" He gasped, jumping a couple feet in the air over a couple feet. "Are you okay?! I can't believe I did that!"
"No, don't overreact, I'm fine!" April was quick to stumble to her feet, stretching out her aching back and running her hands through the fabric of her beautiful dress.
"How did that even, uh...happen!? Pretty crazy, right?" The monster chuckled nervously as he padded his large palms on the ground like a cat. His captive walked over and rubbed his head, making Don's large tail thump noisily against the ground.
"Who's a good mutant monster turtle?" April cooed lovingly.
Donatello laughed and playfully shoved her away, being as light and gentle as he could considering his hulking strength. The two began a spirited game of chase around the spacious sewer chamber. It started when April escaped Donnie's second shove and darted over to the opposite side of the room, laughing and smiling. The beast soon pursued his crush, lumbering around after her wherever she went, like her very own shadow. Neither of them knew of the sadness that plagued the city above them. Both were somewhat afraid to go back up to the world.
"Okay! Okay! I think it's time for a walk through the tunnels, maybe I can tap into a freshwater pipe and you can clean off a bit." Donnie smiled, flopping down out of breath.
"Agreed!" April breathed heavily.
"Maybe we can wash out some of your bloody clothes..." The creature glanced at the pile of soiled garments.
"Nah, don't worry about them. They're a lost cause and would never get clean, not like I'd ever wear them again anyway." The blue eyed beauty explained while smoothing out her hair so it covered her shoulders. It was getting colder as the fall weather began to settle in.
"Hop on, my sweet princess!" Donatello smiled his cutesy fanged smile. April had gotten used to it, but nothing could replace his gap.
"Thank you, my noble steed." She joked while her eyes rolled slightly. Don helped her up into the position she had when she first rode on him. Soon enough, April was fully situated and comfortable enough so that she wasn't squirming against the friction that Donnie's shoulder blade created when it moved as he walked.
A comfortable silence settled in and April's mind began to wander. What was Casey doing? What was Abigail doing? What about the other turtles? We're they all safe? The girl had no way to know the current state of her friends and it made her sick to her stomach. She last saw Casey attempting to help up an injured Abigail while trying to save other students at the same time, she last saw Abigail when the giant lunch table came crashing down and shattered her entire leg, and she last saw the turtle boys when she helped them tame that weird apple mutant that Donnie mysteriously created.
"What's troubling you?" Monstertello broke the silence. It seemed like a habit of his.
"I'm just wondering if the gang is safe..."
"The gang?" Don inquired.
"Yeah. Y'know what I'm talking about." April said.
"Elaborate." He said once again.
"I mean Abigail, Casey, and your brothers!" The girl exclaimed. How could he not know what she meant?
"Who?" There was a change in Donnie's voice. Those calm, puppy-like vibes had vanished and were suddenly replaced with poisonous ones.
"Your brothers. Leo, Mikey, and Raph. My friends and your allies, Abigail and Casey. How do you no-AAAUGH!"
Suddenly, in the flash of a second, April O'Neil was pressed up against the side of a grimy sewer wall, a large and muscly arm pinning her neck to the coldness of the surface. He breathed heavy and furious breaths into her twisting face as she struggled to breathe, her esophagus closing up as it was pressed harder and harder. She hung loosely like a rag doll in the monster's foul grasp. Arms at her sides, fingers balled into fists, and feet stretching, yearning for the ground below. April knew that Donnie could get mad and hurt her, she had experienced it, but cutting off her air supply and smashing her into a curved tunnel wall was a little overboard. Even for a deranged mutant monster.
"D-Don-ie!" The auburn haired female tried to string her words together, but without air to carry them, they dropped.
"NEVER SPEAK OF THEM. EVER." He growled venomously into her pained face. "DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!"
April attempted to move her head up and down, but the beast's meaty arm blocked her so whenever she tried, her chin would forcefully slam against him.
"I SAID DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!" The venomous intensity was so extreme. Small squeaks that could've been pleas for mercy slipped from April's quivering lips.
Monstertello soon became fed up with his victim's inability to follow his orders but before he could drop her onto the floor, she fell limp in his angered grasp. He stepped back cautiously, fury fading as the small gasps and squeaks halted, and April now lay an unconscious heap of pretty fabric and lace on the ugly sewer floor. Panic bubbled up inside of the calmed beast and he noticed the impact of his ways yet again. Worrying about how April O'Neil would feel about him when, or if she awoke, Donatello ran off down the tunnel with tears as red hot as his simmered anger streamed down his scarred face.

Time seemed to move slower without them around.
Everything was extremely quiet. No video games beeping, no strange explosions from the lab, no cheering and goofing off, no to anything that involved his sons and their friends. He even missed the many arguments that he would have to break up.
Master Splinter sat in the dojo poised his normal meditating position. Meditating had always been a way for the Sensei to relieve stress, which he had a lot of since he began to raise four mutant turtle sons. This ancient practice was a way for the rat to plunge into nothingness and forget about the sorrows that rested around him and the weights that weighed down his shoulders. Normally, meditating was a positive outlet he would turn himself to in his or his son's times of need, but all the joy had been drained out in the previous hours.
Meditating was immensely different. Ever since he had learned of his genius son's double mutation and then his whereabouts and encounter with April O'Neil at her school, meditating had become just as big a nightmare as reality.
Hamato Yoshi would not see peaceful images such as starry skies, lush meadows, or summer winds, he would see pure darkness. Blood splattering everywhere, the screams of his loved ones, and the roars of a beast he was quite familiar with after watching the local news, invaded this supposedly peaceful sessions. Splinter could almost see the clear images of his second youngest son ripping his brothers and allies to shreds around him, and it made the old Sensei wonder.
Why had Donatello double mutated into a rampaging beast in the first place?
The answer had to lie in the lab of the young turtle. Donatello had spent days upon weeks cooped up in the room working on something that would have a large effect on mutations, but Splinter almost fully doubted that Donnie changed himself into his current form on purpose. Suddenly the older rat remembered the party that he threw with his sons and April about getting her father back. The special project was a retro-mutagen. Splinter wished that April's father hasn't insisted on going home so early because he could've helped decipher the nerdy turtle's various lab notes that would help his father solve the mystery.
"Donatello...you never made anything that involved your studies remotely easy..." Hamato Yoshi sighed as he gave up on the notes. He felt a smile tug on the sides of his mouth as he saw the various pictures that littered the walls of the lab. Pictures of him, pictures of his sons together, and a significant amount of April pictures stared back at him. Then reality hit him like a slap in the face. Why hadn't he seen this possibility before?!
April O'Neil was the cause of Donatello's double mutation.
Not that April directly meant for this to happen, she just brought it on Donatello unbeknownst to his large crush on her. Splinter felt a migraine begin to rage a battle with his head as he began to sort out what had clearly happened with his son.
Donnie wanted April to love him so after seeing the antidotes that he used on mutants like Mr. Kirby O'Neil, he thought that it could make him human like his crush. Something had gone wrong and the elixir Don injected himself with had altered all of his mind and body, creating the monster that New York was now plagued with. It all made perfect sense.
"Donatello...why couldn't you see that she liked you just fine as yourself!" The rat exclaimed. "Why did it have to come to this?!"
Splinter moved into the kitchen area of the lair, clutching and rubbing his beating temple, and slumping over against the counter. How could this terrible beast that destroyed half the city and killed innocent people be his sweet, science loving son? It didn't seem possible even though the evidence of what had happened was as obvious as Donatello's crush on his new captive. Nothing made sense without the comfort of his sons laughter and rowdiness.
He missed Leonardo's wise questions that matched up with his words and orders.
He missed Raphael's strength that would slowly bubble down to a sweet interior if you pressed hard enough.
He missed Michelangelo's happy-go-lucky attitude and his freckles that were as perky as his smile.
He missed Donatello's ability to create and fix machinery and potions just as quick as he could give his unique attitude addition to the home.
He missed his sons and the way that they completed him.
Splinter was a puzzle, and those four boys were the pieces that surrounded him and protected him in the very middle. When you took away those key puzzle pieces, it left the rat Sensei alone and vulnerable to almost anything imaginable.
"Oh my sons..." He began to sob into his large robe sleeves, crumpling down and down. "Why did I have to lose you at the hands of one of our own!"

It wasn't safe in the tunnels this late at night, even if you were a giant turtle monster A.K.A the most wanted creature in a of New York, but he knew that he had to go back after what he did.
Donatello didn't know what had set him off like that earlier on, but it really made him go berserk. Not knowing if he would ever be able to forgive himself for the crime he had committed earlier today, he was still going back for April in the tunnels.
It had been morning, or more like mid afternoon when Monstertello knocked April unconscious in a matter of minuets, only the act of a true beast. Donatello was worried about how out of control he was getting, but had no idea where to seek help considering everyone in the entire state knew his frightening appearance. Action had to be taken soon, or something very serious, as if these two acts weren't serious enough, could happen to April. That something being along the lines of death. He was just feeling his way through the darkened passageways in desperate attempts to find the girl, hoping he didn't cut her life short already. Soon, something ran into Donnie's foot as he inched along the walls.
"April?..." He called softly.
No answer. No grunt. No nothing.
"Oh please answer me April..." When Don got no response, he bent down to try and get a good grip on the limp girl to pick her up and carry her home.
She still had a pulse and a tsunami wave of relief ran through the creature. The fabric of her dress between his large claws soothed him, but he still couldn't get a good grip on her arms so he could pick her up. With a fast movement, he felt her flesh slice, and yanked his large claw away from her ripped leg. A fresh and intoxicating stench clouded Don's senses and he cursed at himself for cutting April down her left leg and ankle.
With the slick, warm blood pouring from the girl, the monster cautiously wrapped his large fists around her waist and slung her over his shoulder, limping on his three mobile legs all the way back to their little lair in the still blackness of the night. Not a sliver of moonlight pouring through the storm drains.
