Sarriph froze when she heard the screech of the school doors being forced open. She had moved closer to the back of the school but the sound traveled when in these stripped halls. "Er'ak?" She called, hoping the little bug was to blame for the noise but she knew something his size would have a hard time moving a door so rusted. He would have had to crawl in through one of the cracked windows. "Er'ak, this isn't funny, if your in here you need to come out now so we can go home"
Now she was starting to get worried. She could hear footsteps and voices coming from the front of the school. What are the chances Er'ak's mother got sick of waiting and sent others? Probably higher then the chances that any of the natives had wandered in. Still, she better check. She didn't need any natives coming this close to the community.
She was about to double back through the hall the voices and footsteps suddenly became frantic. Sarriph stood quietly, listening for a moment. There was a loud crash and audible swearing. That certainly wasn't one of hers. Quickly, she gathered herself and shot off down the hall.
"Now, where did you go?" Dr. Marrow stalked around the fairly large, very dark room that he'd chased the little creature into. It had streaked past them in the hall allowing them both a quick glance. Whatever it was came about up to the doctors knee and carried a relatively large scorpion tail. It wasn't the source of the light but it had been one of the things that drew him into the building. Take that, Gast. I knew it wasn't rats!
Eric had followed after but they split up when they followed it into room that led into both the gym and the auditorium. Dr. Gast went into the gym while Vincent himself had burst a bit too enthusiastically into the auditorium and plowed into a stack of tables that had been placed directly to the right of the door.
Now he stalked quietly about the room with a slight limp, sure that the commotion of the falling tables had scared anything that was in the room away but felt he should check in case it knew that he would think that and had decided to stay and wait for him to leave.
He stopped at the last row of chairs and surveyed the area wishing he's brought some kind of light. Sure the auditorium had a few sky lights but the day was dark and overcast so it wasn't doing much to help him see.
After a few beats of silence he heard a quite shuffling not far off to his left. He didn't move, instead he waited a moment, and his patience paid off. A tiny head, that of a child, peaked out from under a chair about halfway down the row to his right. Marrow took a quite step back to it wouldn't see him when it looked around. Once the creature was sure it was safe is seemed to struggle with the chair for a moment being a bit too big to have squeezed itself under a fixed seat and pulled itself out into the open space in front of the stage.
Vincent eye brows shot up. It wasn't anything he had seen before. Granted he couldn't see very well but what he was looking at reminded him a bit of fake changeling babies when they still look vaguely like babies, before the mandibles come out and the screeching starts. Except from the waist down the little creature appeared to be a bug. A scorpion specifically or part of one with it's tail extending directly from the base of where a spine would be on an a vertebrate rather then the elongated abdomen found on an actual scorpion. It's exoskeleton was catching what little bit of light there was making it a bit easier to see in the dark.
It surveyed the area, black eyes glittering in the sparse light before is abruptly turned, he supposed to run, and spotted him. The creature stumbled, it's many legs slipping out from under it before it got back up and shot under the stage.
"Oh no you don't!" Vincent dove after the creature, determined the grab it before it disappeared again. He plunged his arm into the darkness under the stage and his fingered closed around a hard segmented shell. "Ha! Got you!" The Doctor gave a yank but the creature didn't budge. "Come on." He grumbled. There was a screeching of claws on wood when he gave it another hard tug and gained a few inches before it caught again.
"Don't bite me." He muttered, suddenly realizing that since he had the creature by the tail it could probably turn around and snap at his fingers. "Don't bite me, don't bite me..." He chanted planting a foot on the outer lip of the stage and finally yanking the creature free of it's hiding place.
The moment it's spindly legs no longer had purchase on the ground it began thrashing around wildly like a fish asphyxiating on land. "Aaah!" He nearly dropped it when it suddenly swung up and wrapped it's legs around his forearm it's hands balling into the fabric of his coat as it tried to pull itself free. Instead he grabbed it around the neck forced it from his arm. It resumed it's thrashing full force but this time it's legs just flailed wildly, it's new position too awkward to actually get a hold of anything, though it still pulled at the sleeve of his coat with it's small fingers. "I told Dr Gast it wasn't rats!" The doctor was so caught up in his victory that he didn't notice the room suddenly bathed in electric blue light.
"Drop him!"
Vincent whirled around, falling slightly off balance when his movements caught the same direction and momentum as the wild thrashing of the little thing in his hands. In the doorway was the source of the light he'd seen through the window and for the second time in less then 10 minutes he found himself stunned. These days it wasn't very often he came face to face with something he hadn't seen before, for it to happen twice! What started off as fairly routine was shaping up to be a very interesting day.
The source of the light appeared to be a woman but he knew better. She was probably some kind of fairy. She herself was difficult to make out in the questionable lighting but what did show clearly were the strips on her arms and legs that appeared to be a partial source of the light, the rest came from her eyes which glowed brightly with the same electric blue and three sets of wings that resembled those of a dragon fly. The interesting part about them is that they didn't seem connected to her but more a construct of the light she emits.
"Put him down!" She demanded again.
"Um..." Vincent glanced down at the wriggling creature in his hands them back up at the new arrival. "No?"
She didn't seem to like that answer. It only took an instant, he didn't even realize it had happened until it was over. Her wings dissolved and their light moved down her body and covered the soles of her bare feet, then a bright blue streak shot past him, grazing him only slightly. Really he was more ruffled by her wake that nearly carried him off his feet then the woman herself.
She stood on the stage, small scorpion creature in hand.
Sarriph set Er'ak down gently and the little 'larva' skittered behind her, using her as a barrier between himself and the native that had nearly yanked his tail off.
"Are you okay?" She asked softly. The larva nodded but skittered back a few steps, trying to put distance between himself and his attacker. "What were you thinking running off without telling anyone? You're mothers worried sick and no one knew where you were. You're lucky I checked here first."
"Sorry." He whispered, Settling down closer to the floor as if he could shrink down or blend in with the wood to escape her gaze.
Vincent was really going to make Gast eat it, now. Standing before him were two, as far as he knew, never before encountered beings. He could have stumbled upon an emergent species! Or even better one that has been around for a long time and are incredibly adapt at hiding. This could open up whole new avenues is his work. Penny had proven incredibly useful since he'd picked her up, though she brought with her more questions and worries then answers.
While the woman, whom he assumed was some kind of emergent fairy, was distracted he moved back to the chairs where he'd dropped his medical bag. He pulled out his case of potion pills praising himself for bringing them along.
Sarriph wanted to do something about the native, scare him off, shoo him away somehow. She didn't really want them getting this close to the community, but right now getting Er'ak back home was her main priority. She lifted the young bug off the ground and shot off towards the door, she'd deal with native if he came back.
Suddenly it was like she hit a wall. She was lifted from the ground, legs still working as she tried to gain traction only inches from the door. A yelp escaped her as she was suddenly yanked back and crashed hard into the stage. At some point during this she lost her grip on Er'ak and he tumbled to the ground before shooting off out of sight somewhere.
Sarriph pushed herself to her feet, more annoyed the injured. Alright. It looked like she was dealing with the native now. Then she would get the kid home.
"Crap!" She charged him but this time her speed didn't catch him off guard. Stopping her before had nearly ended with him being flung across the room by the telekinetic tether that had pulled her back in. Stopping her full speed advance on him literally knocked him on his ass. The pill may have given him the ability but the rest was all him. With all the physical activity his job ended up putting him through he figured he'd be more in shape then this.
He was going to feel that when the pill wore off. Thanks to the side affects he was already looking at a splitting headache in a few hours but right now he already felt like he had been punched right in the brain. He'd wanted to take her in alive, after all a living subject is easier to get answers from then a dead one, but if the struggle hadn't even begun and he was already pretty sure he was going to vomit there was no way he could keep this up. He was going to need his scalpel.
He reached up to grab his medical bag but found that the force required to push her away from him had also knocked his bag several feet away. "Aw, crap, crap crap..." He muttered, sparing a glance back at her. To gauge whether he should go for it.
She was on her feet again and madder then ever. Now he could see the glow from her feet had moved up and formed long thin claws, kind of like Penny's but not apart of her actual physiology. It was also then that he noticed the glow that imitated from the stripes on her arms was also traveling through the strands of her hair, though not as prominently every few seconds he could see it flow from root to tip before falling into it's natural state of deep black.
She ran at him again but this time lacking the blurring speed she'd had before, though she was still faster then he could hope to be. He ducked out of the way and was partially on his feet in the time it took for her to pull those claws, which were obviously very solid despite their translucent appearance, out of the hard wood floor. She swiped at him again and he nearly fell back again getting out of the way.
Thinking quickly but beginning to panic he pushed her again, needing to put distance between them before those claws actually got him. This time, though, she wouldn't be moved. The electric aura around her pulsed and she stumbled back a few steps when she was hit but otherwise didn't move. Gast. Where are you. Could really use some help here. He thought giving her another push with similar affect. Please don't throw up He begged his own body. All he needed was to put enough space between them to pull his bag in.
She advanced again, quickly making up the lost distance and Marrow moved back a few clumsy steps. He didn't think he had another push in him. Her claws went up... and suddenly froze, her eyes went wide, her light when out, and she fell. Marrow breathed a sigh of relief and collapsed to his knees. He took a moment to gather himself, panting. "Cutting it a little close there." He griped once he was sure he wouldn't loose his lunch the moment he spoke.
Eric gave an uneasy smiled and held up his hands, still sparking from the elecktrokenisis spell. "I had to wait for it to kick in." He said.
Marrow leaned forward, his elbows on the ground and with his head buried in his arms. He would going to have to see what he could do about the release time on those pills. "Alright." He sighed, straightening up and getting to his feet once he'd stopped shaking from his ordeal. He should have brought Penny. "Grab the subject, lets go." He didn't wait for Gast to respond, just retrieved his bag and made for the door.
"What is she?" Eric asked, slinging her over his shoulder. He was actually rather surprised by how light she was.
"I haven't the slightest idea." Marrow admitted enthusiastically. "But we're going to find out!"
After a few beats of silence Vincent gave a quite snort. "Rat's. You'd like that, wouldn't you."
Eric rolled his eyes and followed the doctor out of the school.
