I spun around, my ponytail whipping me in the face. The whole oven was on fire. The door to the main part of the cafe closed with a snap, and I barely saw the outline of a person leaving. I rushed to the fire extinguisher, but it was missing. I scrambled to the door and tried to open it, locked. I hurried around the other side of the kitchen to rush out the back door. I pushed as hard as I could but it wouldn't budge. The fire alarms started blaring in my ears, warning me to get out - thanks, like I didn't know that already.
If I can't get out I'll have to call 911. I grab around for my phone, only to remember that I put it in my bag. Which was not in the kitchen. I ran over to the sink and pulled on the detachable faucet and tried to spray the fire, but it wouldn't reach far enough. The more I struggled the bigger the fire grew.
I tried grabbing a big kitchen bowl and filling it with water, but when I threw it at the flames it just evaporated.
The air seemed to be being sucked from my lungs, and the fire danced in the corners of my eyes. I held on the the faucet determinedly spraying any flames that got close to me. The smoke seemed to fill my lungs and the metal on the sink behind me scorched the flesh on my back.
My vision went gray, as smoke filled the room, and grew increasingly darker as I started to fade.
I heard shouts, and doors breaking, felt a pair of strong arms, then everything faded into a blur of grey and noise.

"Uhh . . ." I didn't really know what to say. I regretted my hesitation immediately though, as Frank's face fell.
"Oh . . . I'm sorry . . . I thought you felt the same way . . ." He looked absolutely crestfallen. He pulled his hands away.
"No, I'm sorry. I thought I had a crush on you too, but now I realize that I don't really have any romantic feelings towards you. I'm sorry for leading you on like that." I didn't like to hurt his feelings, but I wasn't going to lie to him, and be his girlfriend. "We can still be friends though," I added pathetically.
"No, I messed our friendship up on a stupid crush and I still do like you even though you don't like me. But I would rather just be friends than not talk to you or anything." He was trying so hard to be hopeful, but his face gave him away.
"Come on, you can get over me! you'll find a better girl and we can borrow clothes and stuff." I joked, but I knew it wasn't helping.
"Come on let's just go home," He tried to smile but it was more of a wince.
"So how'd it go?" Piper asked the second I stepped in the door.
"Eh, Frank asked me out." I tried to step into the kitchen but Piper blocked me.
"Oh my gods! Really?!" She looked so excited, then she started singing, "Hazel and Frank sitting in a tree K-IS-S-I-N-G, first comes love, then comes marriage then comes a baby in a baby carriage!"
Ugh, she always made things worse. "I never said I said yes." I snapped at her.
She looked at me, shocked, "I thought you liked him?"
"The second he asked me, I knew I really didn't and now I feel really bad."
"Oh . . . We need to have girl chat more often . . . did someone else change your mind?" She wiggled her eyebrows at me.
I blushed and a certain person came into my mind. But why, did I really like them? I had thought of them like this before, but always pushed it away.
"Oh my gods, You're blushing! tell me!"
"I don't really know, if it gets more serious I'll tell you."
Piper nodded, respecting my decision.
"Ok but if we aren't going to talk about that I have some real gossip."
I sighed and got ready.
"So you're sure it was Nico?" Call me crazy but I didn't really believe her story. I mean why would Nico be here?
She nodded, "I'm positive that was his sweater, it had the pink line."
"But why would he be here? And maybe it was just the light and you imagined the line."
Piper looked at me, her face completely serious. "I absolutely did not. I am a hundred percent certain it was Nico."
"Why don't we just call him then, if you are so sure." I held out my phone, mostly to make a point- she could've used her own phone just as easily.
"No that's a terrible idea Hazel! If he was actually here then why would he tell us? He must have been up to something."
"Did you at least look around the apartment to see if anything was out of place?" I was getting annoyed at this point.
"Of course I did- nothing! Can you believe it?" She looked frustrated and plopped her head back against the couch.
"I really can because, wait for it, Nico wasn't here!" I did some sarcastic little jazz hands that I instantly regretted because I felt mean.
"Then who was! I know I saw someone, even if it wasn't Nico." She looked me in the eyes, and behind the agitation I could see another emotion in her eyes. Fear.
I sat down next to her and gave her a hug, "Have you talked to Annabeth about this? If anyone can figure this out, she can."
"No not yet, but I don't know what she will be able to find that I didn't! I looked the house over so many times." She put her face in her hands dejectedly.
"Well it's worth a try!" I put my hand on her shoulder, trying to be reassuring, but I don't think even Annabeth could find a logical solution with this little facts.
"Yeah I guess I could go talk to her." she got up and headed towards the stairs. She got up to about the second stair when her phone started to ring.
After listening for a few seconds, she yelled, "The hospital! We'll be right there." She looked at me with fear in her eyes-true, undisguised fear. "Hazel, Drew is in the hospital, we have to leave immediately." She practically flew to the door and shoved her shoes on, not even waiting long enough to grab a coat.
"I'll call Annabeth in the car." She called back to me as we raced down the hallway.
"Isn't she just upset-" but she was already calling for them to grab her car.

I browsed through the colors on confetti, looking for the right shade of green. Luckily I was able to find a store that had a "put your own colors of confetti in a confetti cartridge" section. It didn't seem like the best business idea, as most people didn't really need their own special mix of colors. But it did happen to suit my needs, so I wasn't complaining.
Next I went to the paint section and selected a wide variety of colors, even though I would much rather have just gotten black and white and made different varieties of gray, this was an occasion for celebration that required bright colors.
I found a big banner that was slightly smaller than the width of the office room. I could barely fit all this stuff in the cart. That's when I realized, this wasn't me. I didn't really want to come out like this, I just wanted to tell them while we were all together. I didn't really like all these bright colors anyway.
I pull out my phone and text Hazel that I'm going to come out to everyone. I leave the store, and then call my dad to tell him that I won't be needing the office anymore. He seemed a little upset that I wasn't going all out. But, of course, he respected my decision.
I get home and Hazel still hasn't texted me, which is odd, as it has been about an hour. Hazel usually gets back to you pretty quickly. Oh right, she was on a date with Frank, which she said wasn't a date. I knew it was.
I waited until it was around ten. That's when it really started bothering me. She always made sure to go to bed around ten.
"Hey Jason!" I called in to the next room, where Jason was watching tv.
"Yeah Nico?" He asked, pausing whatever show he was watching.
"Have you heard from Piper or any of those guys lately?" I walked into the main room and plopped down on the couch next to him.
"No," he said. Then he turned back to me, "why? Did something happen?"
"I don't know." I looked back at my phone hopping that I had just missed Hazel's text. There were no new messages.
"Hey, I'll call Piper, we usually face time around ten anyway," he turned away from me to enter his passcode.
"There's no use hiding it from me." I laughed. "I know that it's Piper, just put into corresponding numbers."
Jason looked at me like I had just revealed one of his biggest secrets. "Oh come on, it's easy to guess. You're just a sap like that," I nudge him in the ribs.
"Do you want me to call her or not?" He turned off his phone.
"Oh come on," I tilted my head back so it fell on the couch.
"Well, you were bullying me, so I think it's fair." I turned my head to look at him, and he can barely even manage to keep a straight face.
"Fine I'll call her," I grabbed the phone out of his hand, unlocking it using his silly passcode.
He tried to grab his phone back, but not before I dialed Piper, and handed the phone over. Jason gave me the evil eye, but waits as the phone is ringing. She doesn't pick up. He looks confused, we dial again. No response.
"Ok," Jason ran his hands through his hair, "Something must be wrong . . . She always picks up . . . " He got up and started pacing back and forth in front of the couch.
I almost suggested going over to their apartment, but now I knew why they would never let any of us go there. Annabeth had a baby. Annabeth . . .
"Oh! How about we call Annabeth." I started, finding her contact in my phone.
"What makes you think that she is available when no one else is?" Jason plopped down on the couch and started jiggling his leg.
"Annabeth is always working, maybe they just went out to dance or something and the music was too loud to hear their phones?" I said halfheartedly.
"Hello?" Annabeth picked up the phone. Jason snatched the phone out of my hand.
"Is Piper ok?" His voice was loud and panicked.
"Yes," I heard Annabeth say, her voice barely audible because Jason hadn't put the phone on speaker. I pry Jason's hands off my phone and tap the speaker button.
"They've gone to visit Drew in the hospital, they must have turned their phones off."
"What hospital?" Jason asked, already getting his coat and shoes on.
"Apollos Wing," Annabeth answered.
"Is Drew ok?" I asked, slowly getting on my shoes at Jason's persistence. "What happened?"
"There was a fire." Annabeth explained as I got hurried out the door by Jason.
"We'll be there in a second. bye."
"Oh I'm at home, Hazel and Piper took the car."
"Do you want us to pick you up?" I asked, momentarily forgetting about the baby.
"No," Annabeth rushed to say, "I'm fine."
"Ok, see you later."
I hung up and followed Jason out the door.
