"Why did I say that?" Ulquiorra questioned himself as the class droned on. He didn't know why but it just flew out of his lips before he could stop himself and it was like a magnetic force pulled his eyes to look at her. He didn't understand it but he didn't dislike it either. Surely it was only a reflex since he always associated the heart with her; Orihime. Surely she knew that as well... Right? Ulquiorra took the chance and looked over to where she was and noticed her" fidgeting in her desk, her cheeks slightly flushed, and it wasn't until the teacher called on her to answer a question that she snapped out of her trance.
Orihime wasn't paying attention to the lesson and she nervously giggled as she gave the teacher her best to answer the question but failed. It was then that the Ulquiorra knew that she was thinking to much into it. He sighed to himself, stood up and answered the question Orihime could not. It was a simple math equation, "Sir, if I may the answer is 3/5." The teacher looked pleased that someone other than Uryuu Ishida. "That's correct!" But as soon he sat down all he could her were the dreamy sighs of the girls and whispering about how smart he that added to his coolness. Ulquiorra ignored this and looked forward and no longer looked to Orihime or answered anymore questions. Seeing as it was doing more bad than good from him.
As soon as the lunch bell rang all the girls stood up and walked over to Ulquiorras table but to their dismay the princess was already there with two lunch boxes in hand. "C'mon Ulquiorra it's lunch time! My favorite time of the day," Orihime said as she happily lead him to the door and he was right there gratefully behind her. They made there way to the roof of the school where surprisingly there was no one there waiting. Not Ichigo, Chad, Tatsuki, Uryuu, or any of her other friends. "Huh that's funny, we always agree to meet up here... Odd." As she pondered to herself Ulquiorra had an inkling of why: they did not accept his pressence. He was an outsider. "They don't accept my being here in this institution," Ulquiorra said plainly as he moved past her and made his way the gate that surrounded the roof and looked down to find her friends under a shady tree laughing and playing around.
"Some friends," he thought As he sat on the nearest bench that faced towards her friends below. Orihime only stood behind him and placed her hand on his shoulder and smiled as she said "It's alright. They'll come around eventually!" Orihime walked around the seat next to him on the bench and took out their box lunches she prepared for them. Ulquiorra was not looking forward to this but nevertheless he took the box she offered him and opened it up. To his surprised it was a normal looking sandwhich.
"I know my cooking isn't to your liking so I made something even I can't mess up," Orihime said as she smiled shyly. Ulquiorra said nothing but took the sandwich in his hands and took a bite. "It's a little dry," he said. "Oh, I'm sorry I forgot to mention I put the mayonnaise on the side because I didn't know if you liked it or not since you didn't like it when I put it on the rice balls," Orihime pouted. "It's fine. It will do," he said. She smiled and proceeded to eat her lunch. Just as he was about to take another bite of his sandwich a girl appeared in front of him standing with a lunch box in her hands. Ulquiorra and Orihime both looked up in surprise. The girl was not from their class she noted but she did recognize her as one of the popular girls in school, Yuki Wataru. Yuki was very beautiful but only second on the ranks under Orihime. She had a very angelic face and beautiful brown hair that laid against the middle of her back, and had pretty, big brown eyes Orihime noted.
"Hello, my name is Yuki Wataru from class 2-A. I saw you this morning in the courtyard and I wanted to give you this!" Yuki extended her arms with the lunchbox in hand. "I made it during Home Ec. I hope you li-"
"I already have a lunch. I have no need for another," Ulquiorra stated solemnly.
"Oh, but wouldn't you rather have a homemade lunch rather than that sandwich you bought at the school store?" Yuki said undefeated like.
"No I did not purchase this, Orih-" He said before being interrupted by Orihime as she laughed and jumped in. "Don't be so modest and accept her generous offer Ulquiorra!" She grabbed the sandwich out of his hands and took a big bite and continued on with her mouth full "-Ust take it. 'Ll fimish dis" munching away as Yuki looked at her in disgust at the unladylike display. Ulquiorra did not understand why Orihime stopped him from objecting to taking this unfamiliar girls lunch and why she took the sandwich out of his hands but she just finished telling him to take the lunch and as far as he knew she gave him an order so he nodded in response and took her box. Yuki smiled brilliantly and giggled to herself shyly and said as she turned away to leave "You can return the box to me tomorrow and I'll bring you another lunch if that's okay?" She did not wait for an answer and she disappeared behind the door.
Orihime was so embarrassed by what had just happened, what was she thinking to make him a sandwich from lunch instead of a "normal" box lunch? She didn't want Yuki to think she doesn't know how to make a decent lunch. She swallowed what she had in her mouth and washed it down with tea. Ulquiorra was still confused about what just happened as he looked over to Orihime's depressed expression. But she didn't look over to him or said anything until she finished the rest of the sandwich closed her own unfinished box lunch stood up and said to the still confused Ulquiorra "Don't forget to wash that before you return it okay? That's was very nice of her wasn't?" He was about to question why she urged him to take the box from that girl but before he could she said "I'm going to the restroom, I'll see you in class!" and she ran off to the down. Ulquiorra was not sure of what to make of what just happened but he knew she wasn't alright. As hungry as Ulquiorra was he didn't eat the unopened lunch in his hands. He drank the rest of the tea Orihime had left behind in the canteen got up and walked back down to the classroom.
Orihime on the other hand was in the girls bathroom washing her face in the sink hoping to lower the redness she still felt in her cheeks. She sighed and dried off her face with her hanker chief.
"So the princess doesn't even know how to make a box lunch for "her boyfriend?" Orihime turned to see Yuki standing by the door with a not so angelic face anymore.
"Oh hi didn't see you there!" Orihime brushed off what she said.
I "Ulquiorra Schiffer, huh? You guys seem kind of close." The girl said testing the waters of the territory.
"Oh we aren't together in that way, I just know his dad who is a good friend of mine that's all," Orihime laughed innocently.
Yuki laughed "So your fucking his father too!? What a slut!" she spat.
Orihime was taken aback. "What? No it's not even like that! We aren't even dating he's just a friend!"
"Tch! Don't make me laugh!"
"But it's true!"
Yuki looked relieved for a brief second before her smug face returned "Oh so he's single? So that means his free game?" Orihime turned red and was just about to object but what would she say to that? How could she object? She wasn't his keeper or anything of the sort. Like she said he was only a friend. "Uh yeah he is actually..."
"Good then you wouldn't mind would you? Of course not right? I mean I practically have a date with him tomorrow at lunch!" She laughed mokingly at Orihime.
"He can eat lunch with whomever," Orihime said in defeat.
"He will," said Yuki as she turned and walked away leaving Orihime alone again.
It wasn't until Yuki left that she felt her heart race and something else made it tug in a very uncomfortable and familiar way as when Ichigo told Ulquiorra that he'd never see her as anything other than "a dear friend" as he put it. But this was different in a way she couldn't put her finger on... She thought but the first bell to return to class just rang snapping her out of her train of thought. Orihime hastily walked to her class to find Ulquiorra sitting in his seat with the Yuki's lunch box in hand. Just looking at that box made the redness return to her face. She convinced herself that it was the fact that Yuki was not a good person for Ulquiorra to associate himself with and it would have been better if it was any other girl but her.
Ulquiorra looked up to see Orihime with a strange expression but he feels as though he had seen it before in Las Noches. She was mad he concluded. Ulquiorra took the box off the table and placed it underneath his desk "I will find that girl and return this to her after school." He thought. The second bell rang and class was starting again.
