"Beyond." L was well aware that he would have to take drastic measures if he wanted Beyond on his team but he would do nothing to tarnish his name or reputation.

"What do you want?" As the inmate asked the question he looked at the outline of the walls around him.

"Your death, can you see your numbers?" Beyond's eyes narrowed as he heard the detectives words then he lightly chuckled as he spoke harshly.

"No, it does not work like that. Sorry to disappoint."

L looked at his phone quickly then back at the man. "I would not travel all this way, just to see an inmate much less a mental patient. I am the one who put you here because of your actions. Yet, I am also the best at my job. There is no time in my life for sentimentality."

He took a breath and continued as he waited for Beyond to react or retort. "The knowledge of my looming death was a surprise but it was expected. Shocking, I don't recall a time I have been this truthful in my life."

Beyond smirked lightly but it vanished quickly and he moved towards the door stopping and just looked at the detective.

"You will need supplies to work. I got you a phone, your belongings are at my tower. Watari won't put you on medication and won't have a parole officer. You will be watched 24/7 until, if I decide you are to be trusted."

L held Beyond's gaze for a few seconds then smirked. As he walked slowly towards the door it vanished.

He ceased movement when the younger man spoke."What guarantee do I have, that you will keep you word Lawliet? You are a liar."

Seconds ticked away before the detective acknowledged his words. His voice was low as he said.

"Your world is a lie, who you are is a lie. One more wouldn't kill you."

Shame, I thought he would say something interesting. "I learned from example. I learned from the best." L regarded his old successor for a moment.

"Yes, you learned from me. Besides, we will sign a contract. He who moves first always wins." L observed Beyond, the color of the inmate's eyes seemed to lighten as he stared at the space above the detective's head.

.

L felt excitement bubbling under his skin, flowing slowly thruogh his veins. It was not something he had felt in years.

At the most, it happened once or twice when he first started out as a detective and the cases were actually challenging.

Beyond looked away from whatever he had been staring at then was picking at his fingernail, a piece of loose skin was stuck and he yanked it. His thumb was bleeding so his licked at the blood but stopped when his new 'partner' spoke.

"Alright, let's go Watari's waiting with our plane tickets. We will ride among civilians so we won't arise suspicions."

The 'serial' killer's fingers tightened into fists then he seemed to relax and said. "Wait 12 seconds. Why didn't you bring the jet? Are you sure, you can really trust me with the public?"

L nodded slightly. "Yes, ninety-seven percent but it is good enough...Why are you looking at me like that? I did not feel like flying here and I have always known that you are not crazy. Weird and strange but not crazy."

"What can I say, this is my game face. Just wait Lawli. Three, two, one…"

A random criminally insane institution, cafeteria-staff person could be heard screaming the words.

"Kay, call a doctor. Mac was choking on some pie and he's not breathing anymore!"

"Oh, that's why. Would you mind if we discussed your 'insight'?" L looks at him intrigued rather than scared about the implications.

"Yes, let's go." The younger man ran a hand through his hair as he said the words the took a step and looked at the hunched man next to him.

"Is he really?" L gave B the 'you know' look while intent on walking down the corridor to the exit without a hitch.

"Yeah. He's dead, oh well it was bound to happen. It's part of the job description when working with me. Good for him though, we live in a world full of monsters."

L offered Beyond a lollipop then said. "Risking your life and doing something that could easily rob you of your life are exact opposites."

Beyond raised an eyebrow and asked if he was sure then opened the door without waiting for a response.

Before L stepped thru the door he said in a low voice. "Yes, let's value our lives."

After receiving the paperwork for Beyond's release they had a relatively quiet drive to the airport with Beyond changing into civilian clothes in the car.

L reading over some files on his computer and eating more candy than B remembers imitating.

Boarding the plane quickly L asked him to take the window seat but B knows he is not just being nice here.
