Chapter 30
It came out of nowhere.
This strange sound that cut through her. It made the hairs on her arms stand up. Her heartbeat sped up. Her blood rushed through her veins.
A strange sort of anticipation came over her, bubbled beneath her skin.
A howling sound that indicated a strong wind picking up.
Where did that come from?
Elphaba sat up. It wasn't natural. The air had been so still tonight. This couldn't be natural.
It came out of nowhere..
A sharp jab in her stomach made her double over. She could feel Fiyero's hands on her, as he no doubt worried over her, but she couldn't focus enough to answer his questions, to respond to him properly.
Her ears rang with that strange wind. A storm in her head, in her body. She doubled over again, when another pang hit her.
She almost wanted to check, to be sure, that she hadn't actually been hit by something, been shot, but she knew it would be pointless. This pain wasn't caused by anything hitting her. There was no gunshot wound, or arrow in her body.
It was magic.
The kind that was so dark it sucked the oxygen right from the air.
""My sister is in danger!"
She didn't know how, but she knew. She knew with a hundred percent certainty. Somebody wants me to know...
Fiyero questioned her, surprised at what was happening, confused at her response. She didn't blame him. He should question her. Of course, he should. This was crazy..she was...
But it was true, nonetheless. Nessa...
A shadow across the sky drew her attention. A house. A house was flying through the air.
No, there was nothing natural about this.
She couldn't breathe properly, could feel her tongue sticking to the back of her throat. Words had to be forced out.
"I have to get to Nessa!"
She heard Fiyero speak, knew he was taking her words seriously. Took what she said at face value. She loved him for it, wanted to reach out and tell him, but she had no time. She tried to balance herself, to steady herself enough to get up. Get to her broom.
"I'm coming with you."
She knew she needed to respond to that, at least.
And she couldn't let that happen. Not ever.
She listened to him as he talked about Kiamo Ko, memorized what he told her. She'd get there.
She'd get back to him.
"We'll see each other again, won't we?"
Had to ask, because she needed to hear him say it.
She needed to hear him say something, anything, that confirmed who they were, together. That they were, in fact, together. That this all wasn't a ridiculous bad dream.
He gave her that, and more.
"You can see houses flying through the sky. Can't you see that?"
There were no doubts in his voice.
He would wait for her. She belonged with him.
She would be back.
The next one will be up in a few hours.
