Chapter Six
He shook his head, "Not like a date. A date." Say no, Riley. Say no. Just say no. "I'd like that," I told him. He smiled, "How about tonight?" he asked. "Tonight?" He nodded, "Right now." "Right now!" He nodded again, "Yeah. The theaters open and," he checked his watch, "We've got a couple movies about to play in a few minutes." I felt like laughing, was he serious? I grabbed my bag, "Let's go." I heard Becca start to squeal and I laughed. "Eavesdropping's rude, Becks," I yelled and I heard her laugh. "You two have fun!" she yelled back and I grinned. Seth led me to his car (a beat up truck) and opened the passenger door for me saying, "After you, my lady."
We talked the short ride to the theater. Nothing to deep or serious, just a light, fun talk. When we got there Seth asked me what I wanted to see and after looking at my choices for half a minute I told him, "Muppets Most Wanted." He raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything. When we got to the concession stand Seth ordered supersized popcorn, (something I didn't even know existed) three bags of Sour Patch Kids, a medium water, an extra-large coke, and a 3 Musketeers (I had mentioned 3 Musketeers were my favorite candy on the ride). It was my turn to raise an eyebrow, making him laugh. "I get hungry," he explained. "I can see that," I said. He handed me the water and candy bar and I followed him into the movies. We whispered throughout the previews and a little into the movie, stopping only when the parents behind us told us to shush.
I kept my eyes on the screen the whole time, laughing whenever the Muppets said something funny. Seth, on the other hand, spent the time staring at me. I didn't have my sunglasses on, but I could tell he wasn't staring at the burns or the scars. He was just staring at me. It kind of felt like he was looking at me like I was the most beautiful girl on earth. Never mind, that's stupid. After a while the lights turned back on and the credits rolled in. I got up out of my chair and stretched then glanced over at Seth. There was an empty supersized popcorn full of empty Sour Patch Kids bags and his empty soda. God, he does eat a lot. I check my phone for the time (9:05) and saw that I had two missed calls, one voicemail, and five texts.
Becca- HOW'S THE DATE?! AM I INTERUPTING?
Mom- Sweetie, are you OK?
Dad- Honey Becca said you were at a movie with a boy. Are you OK?
Mom- Call me when you get this
Mom- Are you OK?
I rolled my eyes. Are you OK? Are you OK? Are you OK? I wish they'd just stop. I check my voicemail.
Hey Rye, it's Mom! Are you still at the movies? Call me as soon as you get this. Love you. Bye.
"Sorry, Seth. I have to check in with my mom. Can you give me a couple minutes?" I asked and Seth nodded. God, how lame did that sound? I have to check in with my mom. I sounded like a five year old. I sighed and dialed my mom's number. As usual she picked up on the first ring.
"Riley!" she said immediately, "How are you, Honey?"
"I'm fine, mom," I told her, "I was just calling to check in."
"Oh. Ok, then. You have fun on your date."
"I will. Thanks mom. Love you."
"Love you to, goodbye."
"Bye."
The phone clicked off and I slid it back into my pocket. "Sorry," I said, walking back up to Seth. He waved his hand dismissively, "Its fine." "So," I said, stretching out the O, "What do we do now?" He grinned, "Breakfast?" I laughed, "Breakfast? But you just ate half of the theater." "I finished half the theater an hour ago. I'm hungry again," he told me. I nodded, "Of course you are. Do you know a good breakfast place?" I asked. "As a matter of fact," he took my hand, "I do." He led me out of the theater and back into his car. We drove for maybe thirty seconds, a minute at most, to a diner right next door. A big red sign above the place named it Dianna's Diner. "This place is the best in town. You're gonna love it, I swear," he said as he led me inside.
We got a booth next to a widow and a pretty waitress with long blonde hair gave us our menus. I skimmed over the menu. Apparently the special was Dianna's Famous French Toast Sticks, so I picked that. The waitress came back and handed Seth and me our hot chocolates then asked if we were ready to order. "The usual for me," Seth told the waitress who grinned and jotted something down on her little notepad. "And I would like the French toast sticks," I said. "Good choice," she said, then bent down and whispered in Seth's ear, "My, my she's a pretty one," causing me to grin and blush. "You seem to come here often," I said and Seth nodded. "All the time, it's me and the guy's favorite," he told me. "You and the guys?" I asked. "Just these guys I hang out with," he explained. Not that that was much of an explanation. "Oh. What are they like?" I asked. "Just like a group of guys. Crazy, loud, they eat as much as I do, but they're good guys," he said. "Cool." Just then the waitress, whose name was Greta, came back with our food. Turns out Seth's usual was a mountain of pancakes, sixteen pieces of bacon, three biscuits, and four pieces of French toast. This guy is crazy.
` We spent breakfast quizzing each other and talking about random things. Seth is… different. He's like a light compared to my family's dark. It helps that he doesn't know what happened. He's very happy and there's something about him that makes me smile and forget. I've barely even thought about what happened. It's a nice change.
"Seth!" someone yelled, and we both turned around. It was a guy that looked like he could be Seth's brother standing with a girl that looked maybe twenty-one and a couple months pregnant.
"Hey Jared! Hey Kim!" he said brightly.
"Well, Seth, aren't you going to introduce us?" Kim asked and Seth smiled.
"Riley, this is Jared and Kim Cameron. Jared, Kim this is Riley."
Jared stuck out his hand and I shook it hesitantly. Kim just leaned down and gave me a hug. "Nice sunglasses. Why are you wearing them inside?" Jared asked suddenly. My hand immediately went up and adjusted them. Kim slapped his arm with her little hand saying, "Jared!" and although it obviously didn't hurt him at all he looked down and muttered, "Sorry." Kim rolled her eyes and looked over at me, "Sorry about him. He speaks without a filter." She looked down at our food and her eyes went wide, "Oooh! C'mon Jare, let's go get some food. I'm starving. I'm really in the mood for mashed potatoes and ketchup," she said, taking Jared's arm and pulling him over to the bar. "See you guys later," Kim yelled.
I turned back to Seth, "They seem nice," I said. He nodded, "They just got married like eight months ago. They were going at it like rabbits for weeks until Kim got pregnant," he told me. I felt my eyes go wide and he started to blush a tomato red as soon as he realized what he had said. I busted out laughing and he started laughing to. "Going at it like rabbits?" I asked between gasps. "Sorry, I was thinking it and it just slipped out," he said. I shook my head, "Wow, Seth." We finished up breakfast (Seth paid) and Seth decided to take me down to the beach. It didn't have that many people, but every person there that saw us said, "Hey Seth!" I couldn't help but grin at him and say, "Wow, you really know everyone here." He shrugged, saying, "It's a small town, everyone knows everyone." "Yeah, but everyone seems to like you," I said. He smiled, "I'm awesome. Everyone loves awesome people." I rolled my eyes, "You're awesome?" I asked. "I'm like the King of Awesome," he told me. "Oh really? And what makes you so awesome?" I asked. He thought about it for a second, "My dance moves," he said. I laughed, "Your dance moves?" He nodded, "My dance moves," he said before breaking out into the funniest dance I've ever seen.
I bursted out laughing, "Stop it Seth!" I yelled, "You're making a scene!" A few people had turned around to watch Seth. He was so tall and big that his thriller, sprinkler, and unsuccessful break moves looked completely ridiculous. Finally he stopped, took a bow, and went right back to standing next to me as if he hadn't just burst out dancing. "Awesome enough for you?" he asked. "A little too awesome," I said, making him grin proudly. We walked around, talking and goofing off for about another hour before Seth drove me back home. We didn't kiss goodbye, but Seth did hug and me and invited me to come over to his friend Emily's house next week.
The second I got back into the house I was practically jumped by Becca. "How did it go?" she asked immediately. I smiled, "Great. First he took me to see Muppets Most Wanted, and then he took me to this awesome diner with the most amazing food, and then he took me for a walk on the beach," I told her. "Aww! That's so sweet! And a walk on the beach? It's so cheesy it's perfect!" we both laughed. Suddenly the atmosphere turned serious, "Did anything happen?" she asked. I sighed, sitting down. "If by anything you mean did I have an 'episode' then no. I was fine the whole time, I barely even thought about that," I told her. She nodded. "Good. That's good. How was the movie?" "Great," I said. "Did he ask you out again?" she asked me. I shrugged, "He invited me to his friend's house next week," I told her. That made her smile, "Then he asked you out again! This is great!" she squealed. "Hey, Becks?" I asked. "Hmm?" she answered. "I was wondering if you would come with me to Seth's friend house," I asked. She frowned, "Why? I thought you two had fun," she said. "We did, it's just I'd really like for you to be there. Could you please come?" I asked. She nodded, "Sure,"
1 Week Later
Seth pulled onto a dirt road leading up to a tiny little cheerful looking house with what looked to be a newly painted bright blue door. He went over to my side and opened the door for Becca and me. Becca gave me a look and whispered in my ear, "So cute!" As soon as she said that Seth smiled, almost as if he heard her. He led us up the walkway and opened the door for us causing Becca to whisper in my ear again, "Aww, he's a gentleman!" We followed him inside into a small living room full of people. I saw Kim and Jared talking to some guy. I saw two little girls that looked around five chasing each other around. A man was holding a fussy baby boy and talking to two men. Suddenly the lady that was standing next to the man holding the baby turned around and smiled at us. I didn't gasp, and I didn't stare. She had three long scars running down the side of her face and down into her shirt. Unlike me, she didn't seem self-conscious about them. I rubbed my wrist and pulled off my sunglasses.
I'm a terrible person. I know that. I am SO sorry that I haven't updated in a while. I want to say that I've been busy, but really I've just been too lazy. So, to make up for it I am hosting a contest. Whoever can guess Riley's middle name gets to CREATE A CHARACTER! You can make its personality, whether it's a vampire or a werewolf, how it looks, if it's a boy or a girl. I'll give you the credit for the character, but I'll decide whether it's an important character or a minor character, although you can give me a suggestion as to what you want the character to do/ or its importance.
