The agents took me into the building and led me to a plexi glass enclosed interrogation room. "You have me, so, what do you want" I asked.
Agent Burke looked at me and asked in reply "It's a wonder you have't been caught before Miss Agron. Do you realize you'll have a lot of nations after your head?"
I snorted slightly and rolled my eyes. That caused Agent Burke to slam his hand on the table and asked "Do you think this is funny Regina? I finally caught you like I caught him." He looked at his CI that I had learned was really Neal Caffrey.
I saw Neal whispering to Agent Burke and he told him "Alright, you see what you can get out of her" and he walked out.
Once he was gone, I saw Neal look at me. He was softer, certainly more of a gentleman but I didn't want to admit it. "How did you even end up in this lifestyle" he asked after a moment.
"Well, I suppose you could say I have the typical sob story that led me to a life of crime. I was desperate for money. My parents were murdered and the house was set on fire. The guy had a total grudge against my parents. I don't remember what it was over since I was 11 when that happened. I couldn't collect their life insurance policies until I was 18 though and I refused to live in foster care and I sure as daylights refused to be adopted. With that, I was sent to a refined boarding school and made do with that. There I learned how to be sneakier and eventually steal."
"Anything else" he asked. I think he was not really surprised that I was skilled at 11. Apparently, he knew someone who had been skilled that young.
"Not really. I managed to get out of the school after some time and do what had to be done. Once I was 18, I had a little business and very high paying clients" I answered.
"And now you have quite a few embassies after you" Neal told me.
"I'm sorry that my life came to this and I'm sorry that I" I started to finish
"Got caught" Neal finished. He looked over at me and asked "You still look green. Have you seen a doctor?"
"No, pass me a trashbin please" I answered and after he passed me one, I threw up. He came behind me and held my hair back. When I was finished, he handed me some water and then went to talk to Agent Burke.
After a few minutes, they came back and helped me up, letting me keep the trashcan in case I got nauseated before taking me to the doctor. I really hoped it wasn't anything too severe or anything that would require removing my clothes, or worse, embarassing questions.
Once at the doctor, they escorted me in and Agent Burke spoke to one of the nurses before they got me into one of the exam rooms. The nurse finally said that one of them would have to wait outside. Neal decided he would stay since there was no escape. Once Agent Burke was gone, the nurse did my vitals and made a note before leaving.
Neal sat in the chair and looked at me. "Regina, are you afraid of what the doctor might say" he asked softly.
"Yes and I'm trying not to get sick again" I answered softly, trying to remain calm. Next thing I knew, he was standing on my left side. He held my hand and rubbed my shoulder. For some reason; as much as I wanted to resist his touch, I couldn't resist the comfort.
Right then, the doctor walked in and saw us holding hands. We quickly let go when the doctor asked "Shall we find out what's wrong with your girlfriend?"
"But I am not his" I started to say when Neal squeezed my hand.
"Babe, let the doctor do her job" he told me. I realized I was going to have to play along and let him be my 'boyfriend.' The doctor started asking questions and I answered everything but one question made me feel like my heart had stopped.
"Regina, is it possible that you might be pregnant" the doctor asked. Right then, I felt like a rug had been pulled out from underneath me.
"No, it's not possible. It's not possible at all. We've been extremely careful, haven't we darling" I asked, looking at Neal.
She nodded at us and ordered an ultrasound. We made our way down the hall to the ultrasound room and once I was on the table and I lifted my blouse. The doctor put some gel on my stomach and started running the wand across my stomach, tapping a few buttons along the way.
"Alright, I hope you two are ready to become three. Regina, you're six weeks pregnant" the doctor announced.
"No, I'm not ready! Please, tell me you're wrong" I pleaded, tears welling up in my eyes as the doctor cleaned the gel off my stomach. We finally made it back to the exam room after Neal had to carry me back.
"You are pregnant Regina. Now, I do have some concerns so I need you both to listen carefully. Your vitals were a little on the high side. You could possibly face pre eclampsia and if we're not careful, it could go further. I want you on strict bedrest for now and I will send someone out to check on you daily. If it comes to it, you may have to go to the hospital. At this point, I don't know if you will be able to make the entire pregnancy. Only time will tell" the doctor told us.
Neal and I looked at each other and after Neal had been given some information, the doctor nodded and told him "Take care of your girlfriend. She will need your help now probably more than ever." The doctor finally left us alone and Agent Burke came back.
Right then, I broke down completely. I wasn't ready for this and I knew this news could force my extradition. "What's going on" Agent Burke asked.
"She's six weeks pregnant and being confined to bed rest. I gave the doctor my address as they need to send someone daily. June has a spare room and I know she won't mind keeping an eye on Regina when I'm out" Neal answered.
"Are you double sure she won't mind and just what am I supposed to do since I won't be able to leave the bed" I asked.
"Anything you enjoy besides stealing jewelry and artifacts" Agent Burke asked.
I nodded and told them "I do love to bake, cross stitch, draw, and read."
"Well, drawing is one thing we have in common and I happen to have a sketch book and a new set of pencils you're welcome to use. I will also get some cross stitch materials and patterns plus your book collections" Neal offered.
"We will get your clothes and your laptop, long as we can watch your laptop" Agent Burke added.
"Thank you sir" I answered, trying not to get sick again. When they were sure I was okay, we left the doctor's office and Agent Burke took me to where I would stay.
A little while later, he stopped at a beautiful house. Once inside, I met June and I liked her right away. I finally had to make my way to the bathroom. I had no clue how I was going to survive this but I had to try.
When I was finished in the bathroom, June immediatly showed me to the guest room and helped me get situated. She even placed a pillow under my ankles to help with any potential swelling. When I was situated, Agent Burke and Neal came back in the room. "Are you going to be alright Regina" Agent Burke asked gently.
"To be honest, I'm not sure. I should have been careful in more ways than one" I answered, looking at my stomach.
"Do you ever regret turning to a life of crime" he asked.
"As I told Neal, yes I do regret it. If I could change the past and prevent my parent's death then I wouldn't have had to steal" I told him.
Agent Burke nodded and told me "Get some rest for now. I'm going to make a few calls to Interpol and see if we can keep you at least until you're in a more stable condition."
"I appreciate your kindness Agent Burke. For all I have done in my life, I don't deserve such kindness" I whispered, grateful tears forming in my eyes.
I saw the three step out and for the first time in years, I finally cried myself to sleep. This new path was going to be more of a challenge. Would it all be worth it in the end?
