While James was taking care of Lily through this hard time, she had asked her to pack up her house, her sister already took everything she wanted from the house, and moved it to where her and her boyfriend, Vernon lived. Petunia wouldn't even speak to her sister. So, Loralei, Remus, and Sirius went over with boxes, and took it all to the Potter's mansion. Loralei already started moving everything from her room into the room across the hall from hers. It was roughly the same size and shape, and it faced the same direction as hers. She decorated it just like her room. Taking pictures to try to make it identical. She just wanted to help how she could, and since her sister got the house, Lily had to move out. She would be eighteen in a month, and then Petunia would really kick her sister out. Lily didn't want to give her the satisfaction.
Loralei asked the house elves to make all of Lily's favorite foods, so when she was hungry she could have her favorite foods.
After her room was made up, Lily wasn't seen for days, but Loralei would send the house elves up there with food and water every so often. Lily handled death a lot different from Loralei. Loralei always wanted to feel something else when she was in the depression the loss had left her in; Lily just wanted to wallow in the feeling, and just like Lily didn't know exactly how to help her, Loralei didn't know how to help Lily besides being there for her. Lily knew Loralei and James had gone through this the year before. They knew what was going through her head, and the sickeningly sad feeling in her heart.
"You know, I think it's interesting how we all handle grief differently." Remus said, while he and Loralei were in the kitchen one night.
"Well, it goes along with everyone being different." Loralei shrugged. "I just don't know how to help her. At least her parents weren't killed by Death Eaters. That would have been worse. She'd feel like it was her fault. Being a witch and all."
"Yeah, that would be worse." Remus nodded. "I just hope my parents don't go like that. I want them to die of old age, I think at least one set of our parents should."
"Yeah, it's down to you and Peter." Loralei nodded. "I'd rather have it be yours, I rarely see them, but they were always nice to me."
"Of course they were, they always wanted us to get together." Remus told her.
Loralei hit his arm. "Why is this the first time I hear of this? They really liked me didn't they?"
"I think they mostly liked the fact that you were a smart good girl that wouldn't corrupt their child." Remus told her, laughing.
"Well then, they don't know me very well do they?" Loralei asked, before she remembered that they weren't supposed to be joking around yet; it hadn't even been a week since the car crash. "Yeah, I want your parents to be the ones who grow old."
"And hey, maybe if they don't we can." Remus told her.
"I can totally see the five of us sitting in old rocking chairs." Loralei smiled.
"Let me guess, not Peter." Remus told her.
Loralei shrugged. "I just get a weird vibe around him."
Remus looked at her uncertainly. "Vision?"
Loralei smiled. "No. No visions. Just feelings. I can't help what I feel when I get around him."
"Is this all because he grabbed your ass in third year?" Remus asked.
She laughed and shook her head. "No. I'm actually rather sure he regrets it because everyone got on his ass for it. Even you."
"No one touches my first friend." Remus smiled. "If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have any of you guys as friends."
"Well, what can I say? I'm good at picking out people." Loralei told him.
"I'm going to take your word on it, you haven't really steered us wrong yet." Remus nodded.
"So now we deal with the new tragedy that enters our lives. The funeral's tomorrow, we have to be dressed to impress, try to keep Lily away from her sister, and when Petunia tries to start something we step in the way." Loralei stated. "We need to keep her away from any more drama."
Remus nodded again. "Yeah, that sounds like a good plan."
Loralei jumped off the counter. "I'll be off to bed then. Tomorrow's all about Lily."
"Yeah, I think I'll stay up a bit longer though." Remus told her "Goodnight, Lore."
"You too Remmy." She kissed his cheek goodnight before walking out of the kitchen and off to bed.
They were in a small church, with wooden pews. Stained glass windows, a beautiful small church, but it somehow became gloomy with the white lilies and black petunias in bouquets around the church. The people all looked like a sea of darkness in their black clothing.
Lily held on to Loralei more than anyone else. Sometimes Loralei thought her hand was loosing circulation in her hand when Lily wouldn't stop squeezing it, but Loralei wasn't going to stop her.
Loralei thought Lily needed her the most because she knew her the best. They had known each other since first year, and Loralei had such a mouth on her, she would pounce on anyone who tried to snap at Lily. She wouldn't let anyone kick Lily while she was down.
The service was short, and said something everyone always said at funerals. They were good people. They were loved, and loved many. After the service, all the people said the normal cliches. They were taken too soon. It wasn't their time. They loved their children so much. Lily needed anything to go to them. Something they didn't mean, but felt like they needed to say. All of them had already heard it at the Potter's funeral. Petunia only ventured to see her sister after almost everyone had left The boys had gone to clean up the church after while the girls stood outside. She had a horse-face and dark blonde hair. She was tall and rather skinny, so skinny Loralei thought she could break her if she squeezed Petunia's waist with her thumb and index finger.
"So I see you brought the other freaks with you." She sneered at her sister.
"That's enough Petunia. Don't take out your anger on Lily." The only reason Loralei didn't tell her to straight-up go to hell was because Lily wouldn't have liked that. This was her parents funeral and all.
Petunia's eyes focused on Loralei. "Aren't you the watch dog."
Loralei smiled at her. "I'm of age, Petunia. I don't suggest you mess with me."
"Oh yes, what was your name again?" Petunia inquired.
"Loralei Potter." Loralei's chin rose in the air.
A large walrus-like man walked up next to Petunia. "Potter? As in the late Charles Potter?"
"My father." Loralei told him.
"He was one of the owners of the company I work for. I'm sorry for your loss." Loralei had forgotten about the muggle companies that her father took part in. Mostly supplying money for ones that he knew would make it, and he would get more than he invested.
"Thank you. It's been a year now." Loralei replied.
The man turned to Petunia. "You never told me that you knew the Potter's."
"I didn't know I did." She said uncertainly. Wanting to impress this man, but still wanting to hate anything magical.
"I've been Lily's best friend since we were eleven." Loralei told him. "Petunia never cared for me. I was just one of her little sister's friends. A nameless face."
"Petunia, she's richer than the Queen!" He whispered this in Petunia's ear, not meaning to have Loralei hear this, but he was a rather bad whisperer. He said the next part louder. "What sort of business do you want to go into?"
"Unknown." Loralei lied. "But I have time to figure it out. Being richer than the Queen and all." Loralei smiled sweetly.
The man in front of her blushed and held out his hand. "Vernon Dursley."
"Nice to meet you." Loralei shook his hand. "I'm sorry it's under such sad circumstances."
"Oh yes, it's a shame they won't be able to come to our wedding." Vernon told her as his arm snaked around Petunia's waist.
Lily finally spoke. "You're getting married?"
Petunia nodded showing off a small diamond on her left hand. "Yes, we haven't set a date yet, but we're seeing what we can get at this hotel."
"You didn't tell me?" Lily was incredulous at this fact, not able to focus on anything else.
"No, I didn't think you cares, with your richer-than-the-Queen friends and all." Petunia told her.
"But, of course, you'll all be invited to the wedding." Vernon told the girls.
The look on Petunia's face told Lily and Loralei otherwise, though.
"We'll see." Loralei turned to Petunia. "It doesn't matter what you think about Lily. Or what you think about me. She's loved. She has lost some of her family this last week, but she still has one. She has a family in me, and our friends. I don't let people upset my family, Petunia." Loralei tuned to Lily. "Do you want to go home now?"
Lily nodded, standing a little taller. "Yes, I want to go home. Goodbye Petunia." She turned on her heel and walked away, letting go of Lily's hand.
Loralei looked at Petunia, a fierce look in her eye, leaning forward and pointing at her. "I'll say it again. Do. Not. Upset. My. Family."
