hardygirl87: Thank you!
insolitasum: Alyssa does need a boost in self-confidence. All her life she's been looked down upon, and well... I should stop talking before I reveal too much! I'd probably be half Erudite and half Dauntless. Thank you for reviewing!
fanficforyou: I'll definitely have fun writing the game chapter! (Which is this one btw) I feel horrible for not updating, but that won't happen anymore. Maybe.
Booklover4610: OMG I KNOW RIGHT! I got Blood of Olympus and I'm so exciteddd (I read like the first few pages) (high fives back)
Divergent124: They probably will win btw (whoopsies, shouldinta said that. Well, you probably woulda guessed it anyway!)
Jemmie: That's surprisingly accurate! DIVERGENT! (high-five!)
Disclaimer: I don't own Divergent.
(Tris' POV)
As soon as Eric decided he wanted his team to get off second, and the train had arrived, my team jumped off, some smoothly (Tobias and I, as well as the other Dauntless members and initiates) while others stumbled or fell (transfers). We could hear the laughs from Eric's team back on the train at the stumbling the transfers had when they jumped off the train. Oh well, it wasn't like he was any better! Tobias did tell me that he transferred from Erudite, and reading books all day wasn't probably an experience that gave him much muscle.
Anyway, the second we got off the train, the initiates (who finally know what Capture the Flag is due to us answering questions on the ride here) debated on where to put the flag. Debated was a nice way of putting it. They were arguing, much like my group did last year.
Tobias grins at me and leans against a tree, waiting for the initiates to figure something out. I join him, leaning against the tree with my arms and legs crossed. I look around and see my friends laughing as they point at the initiates, presumably wondering whether that was what they were initiates last year. Suddenly, one of the Dauntless-born initiates detaches herself from the group and jogs toward Tobias and me.
"You guys won last year, right?" I don't bother asking how she knows; she was there last year when I was an initiate anyway, "Where did you guys put the flag?"
I glance at Tobias, who shrugs. I look back at the girl, remembering that her name was Roxy. "Wouldn't telling you be a little too easy?"
By this time, much of the initiates were listening in. "Wait!" one of them pipes up, "Didn't they hide it in Navy Pier?"
They decide to head there, and for a moment, I glare at that Dauntless-born to told them the spot. Skye. Of course. He was a very well-known person throughout the Dauntless compound, always laughing and obviously charismatic. But nothing compared to Tobias, of course. He grins cheekily at me, and Uriah laughs at my frown. I had wanted to see how the initiates would've fared if they didn't know about Navy Pier (Uriah spoiled it for us last year). Somehow I knew that Uriah had told Skye. They were pretty close friends.
As we made our way to Navy Pier, many memories played through my mind: I remembered my first time playing Capture the Flag... Climbing the Ferris Wheel with Tobias... Discovering his fear of heights...
Once we reach Navy Pier, it has been decided that we'd put the flag in one of the Ferris Wheel carts. Suggested by Skye, of course. This time, I catch him grin slyly at Uriah and I grin as I walk toward Skye, Tobias curiously following.
"You certainly seem confident that putting it in the Ferris Wheel cart would guarantee as win. I wonder why," I raise my eyebrows, folding my arms acros my chest.
Skye cheekily grins at me, "It was simply an idea, that's all."
"Oh? Who gave you that idea?"
His smile wavers. "I thought of it, of course."
Tobias sees what's going on and calls to Uriah, "Uriah, get over here."
Uriah turns, sees Tobias and I talking to Skye, and bolts, running quickly, with Tobias quickly in pursuit. Even though Uriah has a second's head start and was about 20 feet ahead, Tobias quickly catches up and Uriah sullenly walks to where Skye and I are standing.
"Uriah, do you know how Skye, an initiate, somehow figured out that hiding the flag in the Ferris Wheel would be a good idea?" I ask.
"I may or may not have told him..."
"Uri! This is for the initiates, not for you to win!" I protest.
"I want to see Eric losing!" Ugh. Suddenly, Tobias asks me, "Where's Aly and her two friends, Tess and Snow?"
"Tesa, you mean," Uriah pipes up.
I glare at him and he instantly says, "I didn't do anything this time, honestly!"
I see Aly, Tesa and Snow approaching the Ferris Wheel, and motion to them to Tobias.
He sighs, and we start running to them as fast as we can, and in thirty seconds, we catch up.
"What do you think you're doing?" I demand, although I am smiling inside.
"Climbing the Ferris Wheel. Or going to," Tesa curtly replies.
"Why?"
"So we can find out where the opposing team placed their flag," Snow replies, Aly silently watching in the back, acting as backup to any of her friends, backup was necessary.
"Alright," I reply. They looked surprised. Maybe they expected Tobias and I to stop them. I don't ask them where they got the idea from because they probably wouldn't have listened to Uriah if Uriah did try to tell them anything.
"But" I say, and they tense, "Let me go with you."
Immediately, Tobias protests, "NO! Remember what happened last time?"
"I'm still alive, aren't I?" I reply.
"Let me go, Tris."
"Why?"
"I'll feel better if I know that you aren't putting yourself in danger."
"Aww..." Snow says. I glance at her, but make no comment.
Tris takes this as an opening and says, "Well think about it, Four. If something... bad happens, you're needed down here to monitor the wheel. I'm hopeless with all this machinery. So I should go with the initiates to watch over them, and you can stay in the booth to watch over us."
I sigh, relenting. I should probably just turn the wheel on to help them, but that would make it so much easier.
(Tobias' POV)
"We found it!" Aly yells, excited. Tris and I, along with the three initiates, are running quickly back to the huddle of the other initiates.
"Found what?" Roxy asks.
"Eric's flag. It's by the train tracks, just near that little clearing a few yards away from the tracks," I explain.
"Let's go get them!"
"We need a plan!"
"Forget about stupid plans, we should just charge!"
"Let's go!"
"Come on!"
"Hey!" Aly yells, and they all stop talking, even the Dauntless-born and the Dauntless members. "We need to formulate a plan and then bring it out. Any ideas?"
"Let's all go and charge them! They'll be too surprised to do anything," Jess yells.
"That's not going to do anything except have ourselves all shot!" Clement states, "It's illogical! We should all stay back and hide so that when the other team comes to find our flag, we can take them down without getting ourselves shot!"
"But what if they come from behind our hiding spots?" Ivy asks, fixing her strikingly blue eyes on his face.
"We should split into four groups. One as a distraction, one to get the flag, one to defend our own flag, and one to knock out the opposing side's defensive players so they don't take out too many of our distractions," Snow says.
Immediately, everyone agrees.
Aly states, "We should have some Dauntless members with each team, because they're more experienced than us." I see my friends all smirk at each other. Wow.
Ivy says, "You want to split us up, Four, Six?"
Tris smiles at Snow, Aly, and Tesa, and says, "The distractions will be Christina, Clement, Jess and Uriah. You're all pretty fast, and Jess'll be good at dodging attacks since she has a pretty small figure. Those who will sneak up to get the flag will be Marlene, Alyssa, Snow, and Ivy. Ivy's small and silent"-she smirks-"and the Erudite will formulate a plan to get the flag while you guys run there. Um. . . Tesa, Shauna, Roxy, and Zeke will knock out the opposing side's defensive players. You guys should follow those who will get the flag and then while they get the flag, you guys will seek shelter behind trees and attack the opponents. Skye, Will, Lynn, and Tris and I will defend our flag. Go."
Immediately, as everyone goes their way, the Defensive Players (Tris, Skye, Will, Lynn, and I) went up to the Ferris Wheel, with Tris clutching the flag in her hand. We planned for Tris and I to be in the cart with the flag to hit those who came our way from up high unexpectedly, and only when Will, Skye, and Lynn couldn't take them out (they would be on the ground, behind bushes, waiting for ambush). From up high, we could see little silhouettes moving. The Distractors were going to the left to make a curve to Eric's flag, Flag Scouters and Attackers going to the left and making a curve to get behind the flag and the enemies. Smart.
I look at Tris and smile, and she smiles back, and I completely forget that I am up high in the Ferris Wheel cart.
Shouting is suddenly heard, and I smile, seeing the Distractors in front of the little camp Eric has set up, running, ducking, weaving, all while firing madly to the surprised defensive opponents, some of which already were hit with bright red, orange, yellow, green, and blue paints. I can faintly hear Eric yelling, and I assume he asked those who were not shot to fire back, for they became a little more organized and shot blindly at Clement, Jess, Christina, and Uriah. Even from a few hundred yards away, I could hear Uriah's laughter. While all the defensive players (All their initiates: Jose, Hestia, Justin, Michael, Zane, Scarlett, Blade, and Xavier, by the look of it) were busily occupied with the Distractors, I saw the Attackers go behind Eric's defensive players and start shooting. Eric's defensive players were surrounded! In that moment, I saw four figures (Snow, Aly, Marlene, and Ivy) run to the tree in which Eric has hidden the flag. They must've formulated a plan while jogging there, for Snow, Marlene, and Ivy crouch around the tree as Aly scales the tree and snags the flag from the branches.
They run back, silently and swiftly, and only when they are a good 30 yards away do they whoop and cheer. The Distractors and Attackers are stop and face the Flag Scouters, who are busy cheering. When Eric's defensive players notice this, they are already running away, away, and away, with the Distractors and the Attackers running behind them, forming a shield so Aly, who is still gripping the flag, won't be shot.
A yelp is heard from below, and I cautiously peered over the cart railing with Tris. Will was shot with a pink paintball across his chest. Lynn and Skye furiously shoot are the spot where Will was shot, and one of the paintball hits Harrison, another hitting Zara, who's black dress was ruined from the debris and the bright yellow stain. Two more figures emerge, and I can faintly see Max and Nyx run toward the spot where Lynn and Skye was standing, back to back. Another figure emerges from the wide trunk of a tree and, from the way the person walks, I can tell it's Peter. He shoots from behind Max, and a green paintball splatters on Skye's aviator jacket. Lynn abruptly ducks behind a bush and I figure out why a second later. A paintball zooms across the spot where her head was, just a millisecond ago. She pops back up and fires at Max, hitting him by the arm. Yes! Only Peter left! I am confident that Lynn can take out Peter. While Peter's ruthless as hell, Lynn was just as ruthless, but thirty times faster as well as slimmer. And she had a whole seventeen years worth of Dauntless life, whereas Peter only had one. She jumps up from her bush and fires at Peter while running to a nearby tree, and Peter swerves to avoid the paintball. Suddenly, a figure emerges from the tree next to the one Lynn is sheltering behind, and just as Lynn fires at Peter again (and hits, a bright pink paintball on his face), that figure shoots Lynn right behind, in the small of her back. Ouch. I wish I could've called a warning to her, but I couldn't. Not if I wanted to keep where I was hiding a secret.
Eric emerges from behind the trees. Two feminine slim figures drop down from the tree and land agilely on their feet. "Four must've gone with the group that attacked the base. And wherever he goes, that Stiff goes too. The flag's up there, and we're going to win this time!" He laughs, and two tinkling laughs join them. Oh no. I glance at Tris, and her face is filled with worry. It was the demon twins. Jane and Jade, fraternal twins, different looks, same amount of skill, agility, strength, both evil. They were even better at knife and gun fighting than Eric, though not quite as good as I was. They'd be hard to take out for they were very fast and skilled with the paintball gun, and I know that Tris is aware of that, for she looks very worried.
"It's okay, they don't know we're here. They think that we're in the frontline attacking to retrieve the flag, remember?" I whisper to her, although there really is no need, for the wind is blowing a little loudly.
"Let's get out the twins first, then take out Eric. The twins are more skilled at shooting than Eric is," Tris tells me, not even bothering to whisper, for the wind has picked up already. We lift our guns to our shoulders and count to thirty, because we're sure that Eric and the twins would've started climbing already, and was probably a quarter of the way up, for the wind did not seem to be in their favor today. I nod, and Tris and I silently count to ten. When ten counts are up, we slowly get up from our spot behind the Ferris Wheel cart's walls, and aim at the twins, who are about halfway across. She nods, and we then count to three. We know each other's signals too well. Two. Three. We shoot. A red paintball finds its way to Jade's collar, but Jane is somehow fast enough and swift enough to have dodged my shot. Or maybe the wind blew it a little off course. Jane glances up just as Tris and I slide back into the safety of the walls. She nods again, and on three, Tris shoots for Eric and I shoot for Jane. Both miss. However, they're almost up here, so it'll be easier. If the wind stops hating on me. We retreat and go back into the walls.
"We have like, twenty second until they reach us!" she says urgently, "I don't want to lose!"
"Let's just fire repeatedly at them. They can't let go of the support beams, unless they want the winds to knock them down, so they can't shoot. And our cover's blown already," I say.
"Okay." She nods. One. Two. Three.
Tris and I emerge from the railing of the cart, the flag whipping in the wind behind us, wedged tightly between two seats. We fire randomly, and the wind veers them off course by a few inches to the left. "Shoot a little more right so they hit the target!" I yell at Tris, though I'm not sure she heard me, because although she is only two feet away from me, the wind is blowing too hard, and her hair flies wildly around. She must've gotten the message though, because she nods and continues firing, three shots at a time, a little to the right every shot. At last, a blue one hits Jane, and a green one follows almost immediately after. Only Eric left. I glance at Tris, and we both fire at Eric, rapidly, but a little off course. At long last, one hits Eric, blue decorating his forehead. Tris laughs, as Eric clings tightly onto the support beams. He scowls up at us, and, as the wind dies down a little, yells, "You haven't gotten our flag yet though! You haven't won yet!"
Suddenly, a mob of figures, running, burst from the trees, their legs making slapping noises against the ground, cheering all the way. They all pretty much had some sort of stain from the paintballs, except for a few, namely Marlene, Aly, Snow, and Tesa. I smile at Tris and hug her, as she yells to the sky, "WE WON!"
Eric scowls, and slowly descends. Once he's about halfway down, Tris and I start climbing down as well, bringing the flag with us.
"WE WON! WE WON! WE WON!" the initiates are whooping. Eric and his cronies have left the area and are heading back to the train, so we head back as well. The night tired us, especially with the roaring wind, and I was sure that I would fall asleep the second my head touched the pillows. Tris grins at me, and I smile back. Victory is amazing.
A/N: That's chapter twelve, Capture the Flag! Hope you enjoyed it, although I think it was a little rushed at times...
Question of the Chapter: Who's your favorite initiate (Dauntless or Transfer)?
