I have to say I'm super grateful to Five Months of Peace, Chocoholics Unite (where are we uniting again because I'd sure like to go too XD), and the guest reviewer Neko-Youkai for reviewing and putting me back in the mood to finish this story. The fourth reviewer I'll address with only a "you'll have to see to find out" and continue on. I know I said I'd go to third person POV eventually but I doubt that's going to happen XD Also, thank you to all those who favorite/followed this story while it was on hiatus. I like writing through someone's perspective so do forgive me (or at least try) for writing any first person POVs. To be honest I'm so mad I uploaded the second chapter to begin with because I want the story to go into an entirely different direction but oh well. I'll see what I can scrape together and do damage control from there. I heard disclaimers are pretty much pointless because even with one I'm under the understanding that legally they can still sue you if the creator so chooses. Not to mention, by this point I doubt Kishimoto is going to sue anyone, there's so many fanstories of Naruto that it's ridiculous XD
By the time Monday rolled around, Sai stood at the gate to his school, leaning against the stone wall he'd stood against exactly a week before watching Kohana shrinking into the ground. Sai was a good hour early for school, having been dropped off early because his mom had an emergency at work. Tilting his head back, he wondered when Kohana would show her face, if ever, again.
"Someone's early," A mildly excited voice called above him.
Sai's own midnight hues rose, pushing himself off the stone wall and turning all in the same motion to peer up at the spirit girl who perched herself on her knees at the top of the wall staring down at him. "You're late," He murmured evenly causing the girl's face to twist slightly.
"Ehhh…" She offered, waving her hand dismissively at his statement before switching topics, "So what's up? Did you come early because you were worried about little ol' me?" She pestered, lifting her hands to cup her cheeks and shake her head teasingly, a grin snaking its way acrossed her lips.
Shoving his hands in his pockets, the apathetic male peered up at her before turning his gaze off to the side. "Worried? You've been gone for a week, why would I only now start coming to school early if I was worried?" He questioned dumbly. He couldn't deny it though, school life was a tad dull without the ghostly female. Perhaps it was just the fact that he lacked in the social skills department and Kohana had no other to talk to besides him?
Kohana's face furrowed over with concern, she stood and hopped off the wall, floating rather than falling to the ground. "A week?" Pursing her lips, she wondered if this would become a habit. Was she nearing her end? Was this a sort of thing where she was beginning to overexert herself? Maybe it was just one of those one time things, after all she'd never tried to leave the school grounds before. Shaking her head to empty those thoughts, she pushed back those haunting ideas and moved on to a separate subject. "So if I've been gone for a week surely you've made some progress?" She added, clasping her hands together as if she would have to beg Sai for the story.
"Che… You made a promise to help me socially and then you up and disappeared. Why would I tell you anything if you didn't hold up your end of the bargain?" He turned his head away from the female, his upper lip lifting in a sneer.
"EEEEEHHHHH?! You can't do that Sai! You have to tell meeeee!" She whined noisily, wishing more than anything that she could reach out and shake the answers out of the boy.
"So noisy. Fine, if I tell you, you have to promise to teach me after school," Sai complied, at this point wishing he could cover her mouth to make her shut up. God, he hoped all women weren't this annoying, but so far he's found they somewhat were.
"Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! I swear! I promise! Right after school we'll go to the roof and I'll teach you!" She promised excitedly, her feet lifting once more in levitation at the pure excitement at the prospect of finally learning what happened in her life.
"Your name is Kohana Takase and you killed yourself," He stated matter-of-factly. He pulled his hands from his pockets and crossed his arms. But Sai's expected response and the real one differed vastly as Kohana deflated instantly. "Oh…" She muttered, lowering herself back to the ground slowly.
Uncrossing his arms slightly, his already pale features flushed sickly, "Oh? I thought you'd be happy to know how you died?"
Kohana flickered her gaze up to him and smiled weakly, "I'm sorry, I'm really happy that you found this out. I think you're right too… Now that you mention it… Well I do recall falling off the roof now. It was really cold that night," She murmured her own mind flashing back to that night as the memory overwhelmed her as she told Sai of the events.
~Flashback~ Kohana's POV~
Winter was just beginning to touch the city that evening, but the best part was it was a cloudless night and the stars sparkled beautifully. I didn't mind the cold both because I had Sasuke's jacket on and I happen to love the cold. But there was something about tonight that made me feel edgy. I felt beautiful despite still being garbed in my school uniform but my stomach churned sickly, there was something wrong. Something happened. What happened? My fingers lifted to brush along the beautiful rope bracelet that…. That…. That someone close to me gave to me. But who gave it to me? I can't remember, but it's so new. Maybe it was Sasuke; that truly would make sense. My loving boyfriend bought a bracelet for me, how sweet! I was so excited about this bracelet when I'd received it none too long ago, but despite nervously twisting the infinity charm on the bracelet I still felt no relief to my anxiety. I was looking straight ahead and I saw Sasuke, he looked annoyed, furious even. But that's fine and dandy because I'm pretty pissed off too and it's my turn to yell at him! My eyes burned angrily, but why were we arguing? Why was I so pissed at him and why was I shoving him? Why do you keep coming back?! I'm shoving you away for a reason you idiot! I wish you'd just leave me alone!
Suddenly a sense of sickening dread washed over me as my footing lost hold and I fell backwards, and in those last seconds I was able to stare up at the beautiful stars and grasp a final glimpse of Sasuke peering over the edge of the roof. His eyes were wide with shock and fear, his lips parted in a yell and in that instance I couldn't hear nor understand what he was saying, and it all ended with a single sharp pain and a flash of darkness blackening out the rest of my world.
~Present~
"So you're saying you fell off by accident? If Sasuke was there too wouldn't that not be counted as suicide? It was an accident," Sai pointed out.
"Eh? I suppose you're right, but it still counts as suicide. Just accidental suicide is all," She added.
"Perhaps that's why Sakura was saying it would bother Sasuke so much, when you accidentally fell he was there. He probably feels like crap that he wasn't able to save you. Plus it's pretty obvious you were arguing, it's just easier to say you killed yourself, he was probably terrified he'd get arrested or something." Sai dismissed casually.
Kohana paused, her eyes flickering over as the first trickle of students began to make their appearance at the gate. "Hey… You should invite Naruto out to dinner tonight. He's a really impulsive, loud, annoying guy but he knows you're having a hard time fitting in so he'll be patient with you." The female suggested, causing Sai to eye her in surprise. Where had this topic come from? One second ago they were talking about her accidental death and now she was going on about taking Naruto for dinner?
"It's only polite to pay for his food since you're asking him out to dinner," She continued, not even bothering to elaborate on the sudden subject switch. "He's the best person to get to know first because he'll be more patient with you and he'll even try to help you fit in a little. Naruto used to get teased a lot when we were kids so he tries to help people who are socially awkward so they don't have to deal with the same things he dealt with."
"You promised to teach me after school," He prodded in a neutral tone that edged towards annoyance.
"I will, I will. But who best to try your new lessons on than Naruto Uzumaki? Just do it okay, I'm going to figure out what I should teach you first. See you at lunch," Kohana cooed, earning a dubious look from Sai.
~Afternoon~
"I should haunt you for the rest of your life and make you miserable you know! I should just jinx you and freak people out all around you!" Kohana complained noisily the second Sai opened the door to the roof. The raven haired teen sighed, "Mr. Suzuki wanted to have a chat with me and you know that because you were following me all morning like a stalker; so why are you even yelling at me?"
"Because I was alone all through lunch! It was miserating!" She whined as Sai reached up to rub the back of his head. "Geez… Are you on your period? Miserating isn't even a word."
Kohana's eyebrow twitched with annoyance as she murmured under her breath something along the lines of 'if you weren't the only person who could see me I'd kill you'. "Are you going to teach me or do you plan on cursing me the entire afternoon?" Sai questioned as he moved to close the door and walk around to the other side so he could sit and lean against the wall.
Regardless of her reluctance, Kohana followed after Sai and floated down acrossed from him, taking a seat on her knees. "Okay, lesson one: Respect. Always wait for your guest to order first, take the first bite, or get their plate of food first. In this upcoming scenario, Naruto is your guest and you are the host considering you invited him. If he runs into anyone he knows and you do not, if he makes the effort to introduce the two of you, you should stand and shake his or her hand. Naturally you'd say, "It's a pleasure to meet you". Got it so far?" She paused, making sure Sai was paying attention.
Her fairly pasty pal was indeed paying attention and went so far as to have his notebook out, scribbling notes obediently to everything she had to say in concerns of what to say and do later that evening. "Just try to get to know him Sai, Naruto's a really nice guy." She polished off nearly an hour after Sai had arrived leaving the male to shove his pencil and paper in his bag.
"Kohana…"
"Hm?" She questioned absentmindedly, watching his wan hands going through the motions of lifting, unzipping, organizing, zipping, and slinging on his back.
"How did you know Naruto used to be teased when you were kids? I thought you didn't remember anything?" He questioned idly, earning a tilt of her head.
"I dunno… It's not like I remember nothing. It's like I remember snippets. Like I know Shikamaru Nara likes to play Go and Hinata is in love with Naruto. I don't remember memories but I remember certain things about them," She supplied earning a nod from the male.
"I see," He agreed, turning and walking to the door of the roof. Sai descended the stairs with Kohana in tow, the pair walked in amicable silence by this time. To be fairly honest, Kohana was surprised at how pleasant the silence was that passed between them, typically silence for her was deafening. It was annoying, it was suffocating, it was unbearable. But with Sai, not speaking to one another seemed acceptable enough to her; despite everything she wanted to say to him she was just content with his presence.
The pair rounded a corner, only pausing as a blond flash of hair caught their attention and the light male voice called out to Sai. "Sai, you're here a bit late. Did you run into some trouble?" The male questioned, his single blue, visible eye roving Sai's features before drifting to Kohana.
The soul took a step back, looking up at Deidara Suzuki in absolute surprise, 'Can he see me?' She questioned herself worriedly. 'Why is he looking at me? Stop! Staring's rude!' She mentally complained. Sai frowned, seeing his teachers attention wasn't focused on him. Didn't Kohana say it was rude to do that when you were talking to someone? "No, I was in the library." He explained, trying his hardest to ignore the fact that his teacher was staring down Kohana, a dead girl that was supposed to be invisible to the entire world.
"Interesting…" Deidara trailed, his eye darting back to eye Sai. "I could have sworn Mrs. Katou said she was in a rush when I helped carry her things down to her car an hour ago. Perhaps she left the library open for you, hn? Should I go check the door and lock up?" He suggested lazily with an almost condescending edge to his tone that said, 'I know the damn truth don't lie,' leaving Sai to part his lips in surprise. What the hell was he supposed to say in response to that? If he said no then it's obvious he was lying, if he said yes then Deidara would be able to tell he was lying about the whole being in the library this whole time thing. Yet, Sai was so wrapped up in his 'oh shit' moment that he hadn't realized Kohana had left his side. She'd worked hard and used up enough energy force that allowed her to push a cracked open door entirely closed none too far away, hoping to have the effect of causing Deidara's attention to switch. But it seemed the only person startled by the noise was Sai himself, peering around Deidara to see behind the male and seeing Kohana having tried to save his skin. While her attempt hadn't been successful, it didn't mean Sai wasn't grateful for her at least trying.
With a curve of his lips, a smirk graced Deidara's lips, "I'm sure Shizune already took your presence into account. Have a good afternoon Sai, make sure you get home safely." Deidara stated as he walked around his student and made way for the exit, his hand lifting to push the strap of his shoulder bag farther up his shoulder before disappearing from sight and leaving Sai and Kohana alone once more.
"What a weird guy," Sai murmured, turning his attention to Kohana who floated over to rejoin Sai's side as the made way for a separate exit than Deidara, not wanting to cross his teacher's path again.
"Che, like you're one to talk," Kohana taunted, receiving a severe glance from her acquaintance.
Sooooooo, that's chapter three ya know. I hope everyone likes it! I know, it's kind of like Ooooh what's Deidara got to do with this? But you'll have to see to find out! XD I've also decided on what I'm going to do with this story and in which direction it'll go (I know at the beginning of the chapter I was like WTF DO I DO! But now I know). I'm not sure how short/long the story will be since there's so much I want to do but I don't want it to seem too crammed together. I'll try working on the 4th chapter ASAP, but it won't be a long one that's for sure.
