Chapter 16
Finn POV
Finn watched as Rachel's taxi pulled away from the curb. He felt like he stood on that sidewalk and watched it disappear for hours. He wasn't sure where to go or what to do with himself while he waited. He didn't even know where Rachel was going.
Finn turned the block and decided he would just walk until he wasn't walking any longer. He didn't even know where he was headed until Blaine opened the door to the studio where the band rehearsed.
"Finn, didn't realize you were going to be here today." Blaine smiled and opened the door wider so Finn could enter. He was surprised to see Sam and Riley were there as well.
"I didn't know either, what are you guys doing here?" He asked.
"We came to clean up. Make sure the instruments were put away, that kind of thing." Blaine looked toward Sam and Riley and then leaned toward him. "How'd things go with Rachel?"
"Eh, we won't know for a few more hours." Finn shrugged.
"Know what?" Puck's voice came from behind him and Finn jumped, causing him to tip over a box of cymbals that was sitting next to the wall. Sam and Riley both looked up and walked toward them.
"What's going on?" They said in unison.
Blaine looked on apologetically as Finn tried to scramble together an answer until he realized he didn't know what else to say. "Rachel thinks she's pregnant and we are waiting on a blood test to confirm. Now if you don't mind, I think I'm just going to pack up my drums and not talk about this anymore."
Finn tried to escape but all eyes were on him. "Pregnant?" "That's great!" "What the hell are you going to do?" The guys seemed to all take on different versions of his own concerns as they belted out their questions, concerns, and congratulations.
"Sorry." Blaine mouthed in his direction, but Finn brushed it off.
"No worries, they were going to find out eventually."
He walked over to his drum kit and started to lock things down to put it into storage. He realized this could be the last time he saw his drum kit for a long time if Rachel was pregnant. He picked up his sticks and lightly tapped out a few beats.
"Hey, I guess we are both in the same boat now. This explains why Quinn was being all mysterious about running into you at the park, huh?" Puck was standing next to the drum set.
Finn nodded. "Kinda surprised you'd tell Quinn before me."
Finn looked up, "Hey it wasn't that I was planning to tell her. I guess she was just in the right place at the right time." He shrugged. "Don't take it personally."
Puck grinned. "Remember back in high school when you punched me for knocking up Fabray? We'd be laughing like dogs if we knew what we know now."
"I don't know much about the laughing part, I still want to kick your ass sometimes for that shit." He flinched toward Puck.
Puck straightened.
"But it worked out for the best I 'spose." He said softer with a smile on his face. "Still, Rachel isn't exactly latching on to the baby Hudson idea."
"What did you expect? It's Rachel." He shrugged.
"I think you should name the baby, Sam." Sam shouted from the other side of the room. "After all, it coulda been mine if I had made a move on Rachel back in high school."
"No way, I would have had way more chances to knock up Berry!" Puck chimed in.
"I saw her naked." Riley said behind them as Finn turned angrily.
"Ok I think that's enough reminiscing." Blaine lectured.
"I'm not naming the baby after any of you punks. You're lucky I still talk to you guys at all." He snorted.
"Name it Finn." Riley chirped.
"What if it's a girl numb nuts?" Puck chided.
"Finnessa?" He grinned.
"Finntana." Puck laughed. "Rachel would get a kick in the crotch out of that."
Finn's eyebrow wrinkled in confusion. "Finn and Santana?" Puck offered as explanation.
"Oh hell no, I don't need that argument in my life." Finn quickly shot down. Even though Rachel and Santana got along now, Rachel needed no reminders that before Santana decided that women were the more attractive option, she was the one to take Finn's virginity.
Puck started to open his mouth with what Finn was sure was going to be an even more ridiculous name choice when Finn interrupted.
"Are you losers going to start writing a baby naming book or do you think you pricks could muster up a tune?" Finn sat down at his drum set and started to bang out a tune from Journey.
"Old times sake?" He shrugged as Puck picked up a guitar.
Finn looked around as the band jammed to some of their own hits, slipping back into nostalgia for a few songs here and there. He loved these guys. And everything was changing. He didn't know what Puck was going to do once Quinn had the baby. Blaine was becoming more and more interested in the behind the scenes stuff of the music industry. Sam was surely going to grow up sooner or later and Riley had talked about moving to California more than a few times in the last month. Things were changing and not just for Finn and Rachel.
Finn felt the buzz in his pocket and abruptly stopped his song to read the text on the screen.
Results are back. But we have to go in to the office. Doctor wants to see us. Can you meet me there?
"Gotta go." He announced. "Doctor wants to talk to Rachel and I about the results."
The guys all made a final glance around the room, taking in the full gravity of the situation they were all feeling yet not saying out loud. Finn nodded and then walked to the door.
"Don't forget to tell Rachel that Sam can go for a boy or a girl." Sam shouted as Finn slammed the door behind him.
Finn didn't remember his trip to the office. He walked the ten blocks faster than he had in his entire life. His mind was racing with so many thoughts. It was the first time that he was both excited and scared to shit that everything was about to change. He could be a father.
He realized as he got closer to the office that he had slowed down. His footsteps feeling heavier with each thud on the concrete. He could be a father. He swallowed. He had so many decisions to make in the next few minutes. He had enough difficulty trying to decide whether to wear the red or blue underwear this morning. How was he supposed to make decisions for another human being?
Finn came to a complete stop in the middle of the sidewalk. He felt his heart racing and sweat started pouring off his brow. He wasn't ready for this. He didn't know how to be a father.
"Finn?"
Finn snapped out of his thoughts.
"Finn? Are you ok?"
He looked up and saw Rachel walking toward him. He realized how stupid he must look just standing in the middle of the sidewalk.
"Uh. Yeah. I'm…"
Rachel smiled. "Yeah me too." She walked over and took his hand in hers. "We can do this together."
Finn looked down at her and he realized that she meant it. They could do anything together. They would find out the result together and then they would deal with it together. Whatever was happening to them, they were stronger as team. Finn and Rachel. Rachel and Finn. Finchel. He smiled as he thought of the high school name that everyone called them.
"Ok, let's do this." He stiffened and then held the door open to the office as they entered the room. The desk clerk saw them and gestured for them to come to the window.
"The doctor will see you in his office, I called in a favor." She winked at Rachel.
"Thank you." Rachel smiled softly at the woman as they were led to a small room behind the nurses' station.
They sat in two small chairs across from an empty desk. Finn looked around the room nervously, wiping sweat from his hands.
"You ready for this?" Rachel asked, concerned most likely due to the lack of color Finn was sure was missing from his face.
"I guess." He said as he blew out a puff of air from his lungs.
Suddenly the door to the office opened and a man in a white coat walked into the room.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Hudson. I'm Doctor Adler."
Finn stood up as he entered the room and shook his hand. "You can call me Finn." He offered, as hearing Mr. Hudson always made him think of his dad.
The doctor took the seat at the desk in front of them and opened Rachel's file. "I have the results of your pregnancy test and my nurse tells me that you wanted to hear the result as soon as possible so I wanted to call you both in here to get the results to you."
Finn gulped, feeling as if he had swallowed cotton. Rachel's grip on his hand tightened.
"Rachel, our blood test results are accurate up to 99.9% so you can rest assured that these results are correct. Our tests show that you are…."
