Chapter 19

Rachel POV

5 months later

"I can't believe you thought today would be a good day to check out the Empire State Building!" Rachel was furiously punching the buttons to call the elevator.

"I just...wanted…to…see New York." Quinn breathed out heavily.

"Well your baby is going to get a really good view of the city if this elevator doesn't get here soon."

Quinn was leaning up against the side of the wall as they waited for the elevator. They had been enjoying a day out on the town before the baby arrived when her water broke…at the top of the Empire State Building!

"What? Never seen a woman in labor before?" Rachel screamed at the man who was complaining about the liquid that was pooling on the floor near Quinn.

"Why do our husbands never answer when there is an emergency?" Rachel slammed her phone back into her purse and began punching at the elevator buttons again.

"OOOH" Quinn screamed, a contraction hitting her hard as she dropped to her knees.

"No no no, you are not having this baby here." Rachel kicked at the elevator door. "OPEN!"

"I'm okay." Quinn said calmly as the contraction died away.

Rachel slid down on the wall next to Quinn. "This isn't at all how I pictured this." Quinn cried.

"It's okay, I'm going to get you to the hospital, I will find your husband, and everything will be alright." Rachel said softly.

"I don't doubt that for a moment." Quinn smiled.

They both looked up as they heard the ding of the elevator door and the doors opened. People started to pile out.

"Hold that door." Rachel demanded of a woman who was exiting the elevator. "I will hold you personally responsible if my friend does not get on this elevator." Rachel reached down and assisted Quinn to her feet, guiding her onto the elevator.

The woman stood, staring at them both. "Ok get out now." Rachel yelled as the woman stood frozen, unsure of what to do next. She quickly exited the elevator and Rachel punched the ground floor button.

"Only 86 floors to go!" Rachel said nervously.

Quinn laughed and then groaned as another wave of pain hit her.

"Well those are coming pretty close together." Rachel said under her breath.

"Every three minutes." Quinn replied with a grunt.

The elevator door opened and Rachel and Quinn piled out toward the sunlight. Rachel grabbed her phone again and got Noah's voicemail.

"Noah Puckerman, I swear to God, I don't know where you are but if you don't call me back right now, Quinn is going to have YOUR baby in the middle of New York City traffic! In the back of a cab Noah, that's disgusting! Do you want your baby to start off having some sort of weird taxi cab disease? Call me NOW!" Rachel yelled into the phone as Quinn laughed uncontrollably beside her in the cab.

"Why are you laughing?" Rachel shot at Quinn.

"You are so Rachel." Quinn giggled hysterically.

"I don't even know what that means right now." Rachel dialed Finn's number. Two rings, four rings. He picked up on the fifth ring.

"Howdy love." He chirped.

"Don't howdy me, Mister. Quinn is giving birth as we speak in the back of a dirty cab."

"Hey, my cab is clean." The taxi driver yelled back toward Rachel.

She quickly gave him a dirty look before yelling into the phone. "You better find Noah and get him to the hospital or so help me if he misses the birth of his baby, I will kill him." She jammed her finger down on the phone to end the call.

"We are almost there." Rachel consoled Quinn who was in the middle of another wave of contractions.

"You better drive faster mister or you're going to have a more than dirt to clean up tonight!" Rachel felt the car lurch forward as the driver began to notice the intensity of Quinn's labor picking up speed.

As soon as they reached the emergency room doors Rachel was ordering people around to get Quinn out of the cab. She rushed in behind her as they ushered her down the hall. "Are you her partner?" The nurse was asking her.

"What?" Rachel answered, insulted.

"Is she your partner? Wife?"

"No."

"Ok well you will have to wait out here." The nurse pushed Rachel back toward the waiting room.

Quinn screamed. "Rachel, love, sweetie, please get over here."

The nurse turned and stared between Quinn's pleading and Rachel's perplexed look.

"Love!" Quinn demanded.

"Oh, uh yes. Um….Okay." Rachel reluctantly stepped forward and stood next to Quinn. "She's my…lover." She whispered at the nurse who then ushered the both into an empty room.

Rachel and Quinn started laughing loudly as the door shut behind them.

"I can't believe ANYONE would ever believe we were lovers!" Quinn spat.

"Ridiculous. People will believe anything now days." Rachel giggled.

Quinn screamed again as a contraction hit and a woman in white scrubs entered the room.

"Well you seem ready to have a baby." She checked Quinn's vitals and wrote notes in her chart. "Not much longer and I think you are going to have to start pushing."

"NO!" Quinn and Rachel shouted together.

"Not until her husband is here." Rachel pleaded.

"Well your baby may not want to wait that long." She shrugged.

Quinn squeezed Rachel's hand and screamed beside her. "Screw Noah."

Rachel's eyes widened in pain. "It's ok Quinn, he'll get here." She reassured her.

"It hurts. I want it out." She screamed. Her voice getting deeper as the pain hit her. "Why can't I have drugs!"

The nurse smiled and walked to her side, wiping her brow. "Honey, you are too far along to stop for drugs. You can do this. The baby is almost here. Is it a girl or a boy?" She asked, trying to keep her talking.

"We don't know. We wanted to be surprised." She grunted.

"Well then, not much longer and you will know your surprise." She looked over at Rachel and smiled. "I think you are going to have to act as husband today."

Rachel shook her head. "Oh no, I don't want to watch this." She stepped back from the bed.

"Ma'am. Your friend needs you."

"Rachel, oh my God." Quinn yelped and Rachel joined her at the side of the bed.

"Okay Quinn, I'm here." Rachel said softly.

Two more minutes passed before the Doctor joined them in the room and Quinn was asked to start pushing. Rachel held Quinn's hand as she continued to push through her pain, sweat pouring from her brow as she swore she couldn't push anymore.

Rachel heard the voice down the hall. Someone yelling through the noise of the room. "Quinn?"

Suddenly the door burst open and Noah flooded through the door, rushing to Quinn's side. Rachel looked back to see Finn stumble through the doorway and into the room. Noah began speaking softly to Quinn. She could hear apologizes for not being there, encouragement to finish the task, but most of all, a chorus of "I love you's" falling from his mouth.

"We got here as soon as we could. Puck was remodeling the baby's room, he wanted to surprise Quinn when she got home. He had his music on blast and didn't realize he had left his phone in the bathroom until I bust his front door down." She turned to see Finn standing behind her, his hands in his pockets.

"You broke their front door?" Rachel giggled.

"Only a little" He smirked.

"Thank you for getting him here." She wrapped her arms around his waist.

"Ok Quinn, one more big push." Rachel heard the Doctor behind her and turned her attention to Quinn as the Doctor suddenly appeared with a small baby in his arms.

"It's a boy!" He exclaimed as the baby's cries filled the room.

Rachel felt the tears fill her eyes and roll down her cheek. She looked at up Finn and he was already staring at her intently.

"You think that will be us one day?" She questioned softly.

"I guarantee it." He paused. "Only your scream will probably be at a higher octave and you already have a better looking husband."

Rachel giggled and jabbed him in the side as they stood there admiring the quiet moment Noah and Quinn enjoyed with their newborn son.
