"Ugh, I got zero sleep. None! Someone needs to shut that damn cat up!" Robin marched into the kitchen, fully exhausted.
Barney let out an exasperated sigh. "I know!" He crossed over to Robin and stole five quick kisses, which made her laugh.
"Ah! Get off me!"
'I can't! I simply can't!" Barney laughed and pretended to be magnetically attracted to her, unable to stop.
Robin laughed and eased into his touch, pushing a few things off the kitchen table. Just as Barney lifted her up on the table they were interrupted by- of course- the cat.
"You've gone too far cat!" Barney growled, stomping out the door. "Alight, get out! Shoo! Go- oooooh, Robin come look! You gotta see this!"
Robin moaned and trudged outside. "Barney, wha-" She stifled a gasp when she saw the little gray kitten on the stoop. It's ears where pointed down and the way it looked up at the two, with such bright, soft gray-green eyes was heart-melting. "Awwww!" she breathed out despite herself.
"Can we keep her- I mean, I'm assuming it's a her? Pleeeease? Can we? Can we?!"
"Look at her; she's all stripy and soft!" Robin said in a baby voice.
"Does that mean we can?"
"We have to! I mean look at her, she's so small. She needs us!" Robin tucked that small cat safely in her arms and paraded her inside. And no, in no way does this make her soft, or even girly, just thoughtful.
"What should we name her?" Barney cooed, tickling under the kitten's chin.
"Tumbler?"
"Like a scotch glass?" Barney smirked.
"Um, yeah, no it's stupid." Robin replied sheepishly.
"No! No, I love it. Tumbler it is!" Robin tilted her head and smiled back up at him.
Later, that night as they huddled by the meager fire place, Tumbler started mewing like crazy. Which, yeah made sense, she must be starving. And, yes, it was official, Tumbler was indeed a she.
"What're we supposed to feed her?" Robin yawns.
"Fish?"
"How old are you? Cats and fish, please." Robin says, pretending not to feel stupid for not coming up with that really simple answer, as she walks up to get the fish.
"And yet you listen," Barney smirks.
"Oh shut up, you."
Barney laughs and walks over to her. "Look here Tumbler," he points to Robin, "This is what it looks like when Robin runs of out comebacks."
"And this," Robin points to Barney, "Is what it looks like when he thinks he's won."
Barney gasps in horror. "Don't listen to her Tumbler!" he jokes, lifting the kitten into his arms and feeding her a bit of fish.
"Tumbler!" Barney sighed. She hasn't stopped mewing all night and they're both extraordinarily tired.
"Please go to sleep, Tum," Robin mumbled. She propped herself up on her elbows and sighed. "C'mere love," she lifted the soft ball of gray fur on the bed.
"Does she have to sleep with us?" Barney groaned, but Tumbler was already asleep
"Guess that's a yes," Robin sighed and rested her head back on Barney's bare chest.
"You're a real pain, you know that cat?" Tumbler looked up and mewed one final time.
