Peak waved to Nina as he entered the Library from lunch. She smiled and spared a second from her phone call to wave back to him before returning her full attention to whoever was on the other end. Likely a professor from the University, going from the tidbits he could catch of the conversation.
He left the bag holding her requested lunch next to her work station, getting another smile and a quickly mouthed 'Thank you!' from her. Returning her smile, he walked off towards the back of the Library, pulling out his id card to gain access to the back rooms where they worked on carefully preserving and repairing the fragile ancient books.
No one else was back there right now, but he wasn't surprised. Mother was still out on lunch and Grace was likely doing re-shelving work in the Library itself to help Nina out while Ellen was still on sick leave.
Sitting down at his own work station, Peak opened one drawer and dug out his bag of lemon candy, taking a piece out to suck on while he worked. Putting the bag away, he grabbed a bottle of sanitizer to clean his hands before pulling on two layers of gloves to further protect the fragile book he was assigned to today.
Carefully pulling the slim book closer to himself, he set up the magnifying screen and got his regular clipboard, labeling the top of the paper with the appropriate book title and page number. Digital media was considered too fallible for this, so they typically used regular old pen and paper for transcribing work.
Peering through the magnifying screen at the faded words on the ancient book's pages, Peak moved his piece of lemon candy from one side of his mouth to the other as he carefully read the first sentence twice before glancing at his clipboard to just as carefully write it out in a neat, if slightly slanted print in pencil.
The process of copying everything by hand first was very time consuming, yes, but it helped them make sure they accurately preserved their history and besides, one could get quite an education by going through the old books.
When he finished his assigned number of pages, Peak would then have to hand them over to one of the senior librarians so they could double check his work to make sure there were no mistakes. Then either Peak himself or another librarian would copy his papers into a computer and save it to a crystal disk, forever preserving the ancient book bit by bit in a digital media.
Until then though, he had twelve pages to copy out.
