The World is Spinning Backwards

Chapter 40: New Road to Travel

"Where did you want to go?" Sherlock asked Emmaline, who was still in the bathroom.

He was planning to take her out for her twentieth birthday, but he did not know if there was anywhere specific, she had in mind. He cocked his head when she did not reply. Emmaline had been in the bathroom for almost thirty minutes, and he was not sure what she was doing. Just as he was going to ask, she came out of the bathroom. She looked at him for a moment before darting across the flat and slamming the bedroom door shut.

Sherlock looked around for a moment, confused. Had something he said earlier upset her? He did not remember doing anything untoward or wrong but then, he was himself. Sherlock approached the bedroom and knocked on the door.

"Emmaline, is there something wrong?" He called, not understanding why she was acting this way. After a minute, she opened the door. He noticed that she was still in her clothes from earlier in the day.

She came out into the living room and stood, just staring.

"Emmaline, what is it?"

She did not say anything but pointed to the bathroom. He complied with her unspoken wish and entered the small room, looking around. After a few moments of not seeing anything, his eyes rested on the counter. There was a stick…

Emma stood in the living room, hugging herself, could it be true. Were she and Sherlock…? He walked back into the living room, looking down at what he held in his hand.

"Are…?"

"Yes I think so." She replied. She turned to face him. "Sherlock, we're pregnant." She said with a smile.

His eyes lit up as he fully took in what she was saying. They were…they were going to have a child.

Sherlock crossed the room in two strides and was at her side, taking her in his arms. She laughed gleefully, throwing her arms around him.

"We're having a baby." She said excitedly.

Sherlock kissed her, once, twice…his excitement knew no bounds. He had never wanted to be a father; it had not been on his radar in life but now that it was happening, he could hardly wait for the thing to arrive.

"Oh Emmaline, my Emmaline, we're…!"

"Are you lost for words?" She asked, shocked.

It was the first time she had ever seen Sherlock, in the four years she had known him, struggling for words. It made her happy that something had gotten him so worked up he was not thinking properly. It humanized him.

"You don't think…you don't think you're too young?" Sherlock asked.

Emma shook her head. "Not at all, no. I want this."

"But do you want it now? I would be more than happy to wait a few years Emmaline." Sherlock's voice urging her to really think about it.

"Sherlock, I want this now. I don't want to wait, not when we have it now."

"But you're only twenty." He reminded her.

"Shh." She put a finger on his lips. "This happened because we came back together after everything we've been through. Because we loved each other enough to stay, that is what this is. I want him."

"You've convinced me." Sherlock sighed. "Come on, we still have a birthday to celebrate."

Sherlock and Emma walked hand-in-hand outside, overjoyed at the news the night had brought them. For the man who had grown up in the cold shadow of an uncaring family, and the girl who had no family at all, they were looking forward to starting one of their own. And making it better.

A/N: This chapter is short, but I feel that it would have been very awkward trying to make this chapter and the next all fit into one. I hope that you guys are happy with all the updating I have been doing tonight! I was inspired after seeing the new Hobbit film yesterday – it is so good!

I will definitely have the rest of this up before Christmas I feel; also, there's a new poll on my page that would help me out with this book – it's about if you guys want me to write the next two first or iron out the plot inconsistencies in the first two before that. So let me know because I'll do what you guys want
