A/N I mentioned a short crappy 1k word chapter in my previous note, and here it is. Once again thanks for all your support, and sorry for the discontinuation.
"Y'know, I think it's really great what you're doing Rubes."
The crimsonette in question made a sudden turn in her seat at their apartments' dining room table all to make eye contact with Yang; her face lined with a soft grin the redhead had been missing lately. It still felt awkward to hear Yang actually speak about things related to Cinder, and not bury them in slander.
Ruby just gave a small grin in response to the blonde's words, before turning her attention back to the laptop in front of her the cause for why Yang had just made that comment. After their evening on the apartment roof, Ruby was intrigued maybe even fantastically so- into the whereabouts of her amber-eyed girlfriend's parents.
She knew the topic was still touch-and-go with Cinder, so Ruby tried not to pry. However, her curious instinct got the better of her just a few days ago, as a harmless web search turned into an all-nighter of data mining the net for any scrap of info she could find on James and Autumn Fall. She felt bad about doing behind Cinder's back, so she brought the idea to the raven-haired girl one last time. After some begging, and an act of "being sexy" (which also ended in catastrophic failure) Cinder begrudgingly agreed. It was more like an extremely cryptic way of saying yes and no at the same time, but all Ruby could see in her head was a bright green light saying "Go for it girl."
She was pretty surprised when one day Cinder had actually asked if she found any info. When Ruby asked why, the elder girl merely shrugged and replied, "If we do meet them, you'll bail me out of jail after I kill them, right?" That didn't make the crimsonette feel about this whole fiasco. What followed that was a series of very passive-aggressive comments similar to that one. A still bright and clear sign that Cinder wasn't onboard.
She had every right not to however.
Ruby had offered to cease the search, but the raven-haired girl would give another cryptic reply, leaving Ruby scratching her crimson locks and mashing her keyboard.
"Ruby? You there?" Came Yang's voice again. This time the crimsonette looked up to see Yang looming over her from behind her chair, her lavender orbs focused on the screen before them.
"Uh, yeah… sorry sis, just this is… ugh… I don't know. I keep getting dead ends. It's like they fell off of the face of the planet ten years ago." Ruby grimaced.
The blonde patted Ruby's head, "Why don't you pack it in for tonight? It's like-" Yang squinted to read the small clock on the bottom right of the screen before her, "-two in the morning…"
"I can't, because I'm... determined to get to the bottom of this mystery... " Ruby tried to speak triumphantly, but the hazy feeling of tiredness began to encumber her; slurring her words.
Yang laughed, "Okay detective, why don't you resume your search tomorrow?" She admired her sisters determination, really she did, but sometimes-
An amazing idea sprung into the blonde's head, "Ah! I've got an idea," Yang spoke, cunning grin tugging at her features. Her sister's got determination, but she's got-
"Weiss."
Leaning over to switch on a side lamp, Ruby gave a puzzled stare, "Weiss? I don't follow you sis."
The elder girl clapped her hands together and plopped onto the couch next to Ruby, "Weiss is rich, right?"
"Uh-huh."
"Rich people have access to special hardware, right?"
Yang's wording was only addling Ruby's confusion, "Okay?"
"Simple, I'll ask Weiss tomorrow if she can help. Maybe hire a P.I. like in the movies and stuff."
The redhead yawned and giggled at the same time, "Ah, maybe..." She spoke sardonically, "For now I think I'll take your original advice and hit the hay," Yawning again; Ruby gently closed her laptop and rose from her spot on the couch. An instant soreness shot through her frame, making her realize just how long she had sat in a stagnant state, data mining away.
A certain blonde stifled a laugh at the sound of her sister's bones cracking and popping into place, "Geez, you sound like an old lady."
Ruby rolled her eyes and tutted, "Whatever." Though she sounded dismissive, she really was surprised how long she sat there for, and how in the hell did her laptop's battery hold out for that long.
"If only it acted this way when I'm at school..."
Thoughts aside, the idea of collapsing in her cozy bed, was beckoning to her. The crimsonette tucked her laptop under her arm and dragged her feet out of the living room. She passed by Yang with a thankful, sheepish grin before trudging down the hall and to her bedroom, barely minding the 'Night sis' coming from the hallway.
She wanted to thank Yang, she really did.
But there were more pressing matters to attend to.
Like sleep.
Ruby half-mindedly set her laptop down (which was more like a drop) and lazily ducked under the covers of her bed, not even bothering to change clothes.
For the past few nights, she's been kept awake by either her online escapade of finding a trace of Cinder's parents, or lying restless in bed, eyes wide open and pointed to the ceiling wondering what the next day would bring. Tonight was no different. Despite being extremely tired, she began to wonder if they'd ever find the girl's parents, Yang had half-joked about hiring someone, and even if she was being serious (It was hard to tell sometimes) Ruby came to the conclusion that hiring a professional wasn't what Cinder would want.
Then again, the crimsonette couldn't figure out what Cinder wanted anyway.
She halted any further thoughts there and made herself more comfortable. Sleep came quickly; her last thoughts before her eyes shut were of being able to see her girlfriend tomorrow.
And not having to worry about it.
