AN: Hello! Here's another chapt. Real life got crazy as always. I wanted to post this earlier but stuff happens, so here it is anyways. Happy klaroline Wed! The kiddies are a bit older in the flashback like 9 or 10. Hope you're amused. No beta.
Caroline sat in her apartment eating a chocolate bunny. Stefan had stopped by earlier and dropped some off. She laughed that he still had an addiction to sugar. There was a knock at her door and she got up to answer it. She opened the door still holding the chocolate bunny in her hands.
"Klaus" Caroline said
"Still a messy eater" Klaus said walking in
Caroline closed the door as Klaus walked in. He turned around and wiped the chocolate off her face.
"Always with the chocolate bunny" Klaus said
"Stefan dropped it off"
"Really? He never liked to share candy"
"Well yeah, but this time he was afraid that he was going to eat it all"
"I remember our last Easter together"
"Yeah I'll never forget it"
Caroline stood in the park holding her pink easter basket in her hands. She looked around for Klaus who showed up with a basket shaped like a soccer ball. The two held hands as they ran off to find the eggs and chocolate. Damon and Stefan were already gone, searching for chocolate.
Liz saw Elijah and Katherine talking and walked over to them.
"Happy Easter" Liz said
"Happy Easter Liz" Elijah said
"I have to run to the station for a bit, can you just watch over Caroline while I'm gone?" Liz asked
"Of course" Elijah said
"Where's my mom?" Caroline asked
"She had to go to the station. We can give you a ride back, you can stay with us until she's back" Elijah said
"Ok" Caroline said
Caroline slipped her hand into Nik's hand as they walked off. She saw Stefan and Damon fighting over the massive chocolate bunny.
"It's MINE!" Stefan yelled
"No! It's MINE!" Damon yelled back
"Boys!" Giuseppe yelled
Elijah got off the phone and looked over at Katherine.
"What's wrong?" Katherine asked
"Come here"
Katherine walked over to Elijah. He whispered something into her ear and then she looked back at the two kids playing. Katherine looked back at Elijah.
"Are you sure?" Katherine asked
"Yes"
"Alright"
Katherine walked over to the two kids playing.
"Hey, looks like we're going to have a sleepover" Katherine said
"Yay!" Caroline yelled out
Caroline and Nik seemed happy. They didn't notice that their sleepover was lasting through the week. They didn't notice that Caroline hadn't been home in almost 2 weeks. Caroline seemed happy to be with Nik. They'd wake up in the morning, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to school, come back, play, eat dinner and then go to sleep. It wasn't until Caroline realized she had to go get more clothes that it dawned on her that she hadn't seen her mother in a while.
"Hey Kat, have you seen my mom?" Caroline asked
"Um, no, have you?" Katherine answered
"She's probably working again" Caroline said
"Probably, you know her"
"I need more clothes"
"We'll go get some"
"It's ok, I can do it"
Caroline got up and went over to her house. Nik was outside talking to Stefan when he saw Caroline go to her house. He followed her in. Caroline walked into her house and noticed the basement door was open. She walked over to it wondering who opened it.
"Caroline" Nik said
"Nik! You scared me!"
"Scaredy cat"
"Shut up!"
"What are you doing?"
"I needed more clothes"
"Are they in the basement?"
"No, but someone opened the door, and it wasn't me. And my mom's at work"
Nik immediately pulled her back.
"We should leave" Nik said
"No, my mom's the sheriff, nobody walks into my house like that"
Caroline started to go down the stairs. Nik followed behind her. They two walked down into the basement. It was dark and damp. Caroline's hands ran along the wall looking for a light switch. She flipped the light switch and the lights went on.
"What is all this?" Nik asked
"I don't know" Caroline said
The basement was filled with several presents, all wrapped up. Each one had ribbons and bows on it. They were all different sizes some of them had small cards on them. Caroline looked at it and realized they were all addressed to her.
"What's going on?" Caroline asked
"They're all for you" Nik said
Caroline opened one of the cards and looked at it. It was a happy 14th birthday card.
"What?" Caroline said confused
She opened the card and looked inside.
Caroline. I'm sorry that I'm not here with you, but I wanted you to know that I love you and always thought about you. I wanted to make sure you were never alone on your birthday. I hope this makes up for the fact that I'm not there
Caroline took another card and started to read it. It was an easter card.
Happy Easter Caroline. I know you're too old for this kind of stuff, but I wanted you to know that I'm always thinking about you. I know I'm not there but I don't want you to be alone ever. I love you so much and wish I could be there with you
"I don't understand what's going on" Caroline said
"Hey. It's ok" Nik said
"Where's my mom?"
"Oh, you're not suppose to be down here" Elijah said carrying in more presents
"Elijah, what's going on here?" Nik asked
"I'm not the one to tell you. You weren't suppose to find out like this" Elijah said
"Where's my mom?!" Caroline asked
"I'll take you to see her" Elijah said
Caroline walked through the hallways of the hospital. She wasn't sure what was going on. She didn't like the smell of hospitals. She held onto Nik's hand as they walked. They followed Elijah until he stopped at a room. Caroline looked inside and Liz sat there writing more cards.
"Mom?" Caroline called out
Liz stopped what she was doing and looked up.
"Caroline, what are you doing here?" Liz asked
"She found them in the basement. I'm sorry" Elijah said
"It's alright, I guess I had to tell her eventually" Liz said
"Mom what's going on?" Caroline asked
"Niklaus, come with me" Elijah said
Nik looked over at Caroline and then back at Elijah. He followed Elijah down the hallway.
"What's happening?" Nik asked
"I'm sick Caroline. They found it recently. I have cancer. It's very aggressive. They're treating it right now, but they're not sure if it will work" Liz said
"What does that mean?"
"It means, I'm sick. And if it doesn't work, the treatments, then I may die"
"NO! You can't leave me!"
"I don't want to, but you have to understand that it is a possibility"
"No! Please! Don't go! I'll be good, I promise! Just don't leave me!"
Caroline cried and hugged her mom.
"Please don't leave me" Caroline sobbed
"Oh sweetie. I don't want to go. I'm trying to get better. I really am"
"Then what are all those presents in the basement for?"
"If I didn't get better, I didn't want you to feel alone. I bought you presents for several birthdays, christmas, easter, halloween, valentine's day, I think every holiday out there"
"You can't leave. You're going to get better, you have to"
"Caroline's mom is sick, that's why she's in the hospital" Elijah said
"Why didn't she tell her?" Nik asked
"She didn't want her to worry. Caroline seemed happy with us, with you. But she had to tell her eventually. You're going to have to be a good friend to her"
"I am a good friend to her"
"I know, but right now, she'll need you more. Do you understand?"
"Yes"
"What will happen to me if you leave? Dad doesn't want me" Caroline cried
"I'm not sure, we'll figure something out, I promise you that"
"I don't want you to leave. I don't want to go with dad. I'm scared!"
"It's ok honey, we'll get through this. Just be brave for me right now ok?"
Nik walked back into his room after his bath. He changed into his monkey pajamas. He saw Caroline sitting in his room while Katherine brushed her hair. Katherine set the brush down.
"All done kid. Both of you go to sleep" Katherine said
"Night Kat" Nik said climbing into the bed
"Night" Caroline said
Katherine left the room only to run into Elijah.
"How is she?" Elijah asked
"How do you expect? She just found out her mom's sick and may die. She's handling it great for a kid right now" Katherine said sarcastically
"I insisted that Liz tell her earlier"
"Whatever, I can tell she's trying to keep it together, but she's about to crack. Tough kid"
Caroline climbed into the bed as Nik was already falling asleep next to her. She looked over at him sleeping.
"Nik?" Caroline said
"What?" Nik said half awake
"Are you awake?"
"I am now"
"Nik?"
"What?"
"I'm afraid"
"Of what?"
"If my mom doesn't get better they'll send me away"
"No, I won't let them take you"
"I'm really scared Nik"
"It'll be ok. I'll talk to Elijah, you can stay here. I can share my room with you. Just don't make everything pink"
"Do you ever think about your mom?"
"No, I don't really remember her anymore"
"I don't want to forget my mom. But I don't want to remember her if she leaves. I'm a terrible daughter. I always make a mess and she's always mad at me" Caroline started to cry
"Hey, don't cry" Nik pulled her closer as she cried on his chest
"I don't want her to be mad at me, I don't want her to remember me like this"
"She won't, she wants to get better for you. She wants to stay with you"
"I'm so scared"
"I am too"
"Why are you scared?"
"Because I don't want anything to bad to happen to you"
"Promise me you won't leave"
"I promise"
Caroline's phone began to ring and saw that it was her mom calling. She answered it.
"Hey mom" Caroline said
Klaus watched Caroline as she walked around her apartment talking to her mom. He looked at what else Stefan dropped off. He found a bag of jelly beans and started to eat some. Caroline smacked his hand for eating her jelly beans. He looked up at her surprised.
"Yeah, I'll call you back mom" Caroline said as she hung up
"I see you don't like to share" Klaus said
"Those are for me not you"
"So selfish today"
"You always eat my candy"
"I eat a lot of things"
"Klaus!"
Klaus grabbed Caroline and lifted her up, and threw her over his shoulder.
"Oh my god! Put me down!" Caroline yelled
"All in good time"
Klaus started to walk down the hallway to her bedroom. He dropped her onto the bed and closed the door behind him.
"Now, let me show you the things I like to eat" Klaus said walking towards her
