Apologies in advance for the short chapter. Hopefully the next will be longer. Hope you all still enjoy. Best Wishes Mx
'I win' I say and run round the TV room in a victory lap.
'Stop showing off baby bro. We won't play the rest of the week if you're going to be like this.' Mia says. I look at her and then Hannah.
'Sorry.' I mutter and start to put the game away.
'I'm off to bed, see you both in the morning.' Mia says. She hugs us both and then leaves the room. I look at Hannah shyly and walk towards her.
'Do you want to watch TV?' I ask her.
'No, I'm pretty shattered. I might go to bed as well.' She says.
'Oh OK. I'll be up soon.' I say and kiss her cheek.
'Matt, what wrong?' Hannah asks.
'Nothing. I'll go and play the piano for a bit while you go to bed.' I say.
'You're worrying about something.' She says. I look at her, she's starting to know me so well. She hugs me and I hug her back and before I know what's happening she's kissing me passionately on the lips, I return the kiss before pulling away.
'Hannah' I whisper.
'I know but you need distracting from whatever it is you're worrying about.' She says and smiles at me before kissing me once more. I pull away again.
'Hannah, go to bed. I'll be with you soon, I have a few things that I need to do.' I say. She looks at me questionably. 'I need to phone Jonty and I want to look for a couple of books, they should be in the library or mommy's office and then I might play the piano.'
'Are you worrying about sleeping?' she asks, direct as usual.
'I'm not tired.' I say quietly.
'Matt, you look shattered.' She says.
'I'll be fine, go now and I'll join you soon.' I say and after hugging her again I let her go and this time she leaves the room. I put the scrabble box back in the cupboard and make my way to daddy's study. Through habit I pull open the top right hand drawer and there I find a power ranger, helicopter, car and jet along with two small lego men. I smile to myself. Daddy must have taken them off me for some reason. I close the drawer but take comfort from knowing that they're there. Next I pick up the phone and call Jonty's mobile. Just as I'm about to give up he answers.
'Jonty, it's Matt.' I say.
'Give me two minutes.' He says to me and then to someone else 'I'll be back in soon.' A few minutes later he speaks again 'Matt, I can talk now. A few of us are at the sports bar.'
'A few.' I say.
'Most of the year group and you're the hot topic of conversation, especially amongst the girls.' He says and I can tell he's smiling.
'Oh shit.' I say.
'Hey it's not that bad. They've asked me if I knew anything more than what the papers reported and I could honestly say no. The girls are all speculating about your sexuality because you've never had a girlfriend, someone even asked me if you were gay. I don't think they realise you're with Hannah, you are still going out with her aren't you?' Jonty asks.
'Yes, we're still together.' I say.
'Cool. She's the only girl in the year that wouldn't go out with me. I know she was with Jordan for a long time but when they split I did offer to take her out and she turned me down.' He says.
'We're away together at the moment, partly because of the press release. It was done as we flew out of Seatac. I'm sorry I didn't tell you before but I only really found out part of it a couple of weeks ago and most of it yesterday so it was a bit of a shock. Obviously Hannah didn't have a clue either until last night.' I say.
'Hey no worries. Hannah told me that you had an operation.' He says.
'Yes, it was a bit of an emergency but I think I'm on the mend. I've got some more tests tomorrow and there's a doctor in the house next to where we are at the moment, that's why mom let us come away.' I say. 'We're five minutes from where your parents have a house and you were there a few weeks ago.'
'Very cryptic but I know where you are now. What's the name of the road?' he asks.
'I haven't got a clue. Christian just told me it was five minutes away. I know it's at the end of a road and we're on the beach and the surfs good.' I say.
'I think I know where you are. We're walking distance. Actually my parents were talking about coming out this weekend because we didn't go to London, maybe I'll come with them.' He says.
'That would be good. I might be able to surf by then.' I say with a smile.
'I'm definitely coming then, we can surf together.' He says before adding. 'Matt, don't worry I won't say anything to anyone, especially all those girls.'
'Thanks Jonty' I say.
'No worries. Can I call you on this number tomorrow? I'll be able to talk more then. I better go back into the bar before anyone gets suspicious.' He says.
'Sure Jonty, I'll speak to you tomorrow.' I say and then hang up feeling a lot happier after speaking to my friend. I make my way out of daddy's study to mommy's office. It is very similar to her one at Bellevue with shelves lining the walls. I look through the magazines, again they are the same title and I assume that this was the one that she edited. There are more photo albums, videos and a box labelled Matty next to one labelled 'Emily Grace'. I take it off the shelf and open it. Looking inside I breathe deeply. There's a photo of my baby sister. She was gorgeous. Delving into the box I find more photos of her, one with mommy, then daddy and then both of them. One with mom and finally one with me. I'm holding my baby sister and I can see the look of love in my eyes as I smile at her. I place it back in the box carefully and then put it back on the shelf with the thought that this box is very precious. I turn my attention to the books. I find the children's ones that mom told me about and they are next to all her other novels. I will start reading tomorrow when I'm less tired but I feel comforted that I have found where they are. Turning I leave the office and go back to the living room with the piano and sitting down I start to play. I totally lose track of time playing a mixture of sad songs before moving on to more upbeat and finally happy tunes.
My phone vibrates in my pocket and I'm annoyed by the interruption, this is why I hate them so much but I promised Hannah and Christian that I would carry it at all times. Pulling it out of my pocket I see the message is from Christian.
'Why are you playing the piano instead of going to bed?' it asks and I look at the time. It's three o'clock and I don't know where the time has gone.
'Sorry I didn't realise. Mia?' I text back and my phone rings.
'Hi Christian.' I say.
'What's the matter? Why are you still awake?' he asks.
'I was looking at stuff and then got lost in the music. Did Mia tell you?' I ask.
'I'd emailed her something and she replied straightaway and said you were on the piano.' He says.
'I spoke to Jonty, he seemed pretty cool about everything and he's thinking of coming here with his parents at the weekend.' I say.
'That will be good for you, so what's worrying you.' Christian asks. 'Mia said you looked tired earlier and you still haven't gone to sleep. Matt I don't want you making yourself ill. If you're not going to look after yourself then I'll be flying out at the weekend to watch over you.'
'Christian please, I'm just trying to deal with so much at the moment. I don't need a lecture.' I say.
'I'm concerned. You slept for a few hours on the jet but that's it and you need more than that at the moment.' He says.
'I found some photos of Emily.' I whisper. 'I was holding her.'
'Oh Matt.' Christian says quietly.
'She was gorgeous, she looked so perfect.' I whisper again. 'My baby sister.'
'You're hurting.'
'I'm grieving for the sister I didn't know so that's why I can't sleep and am still playing the piano. I thought both girls were asleep and it was too late to call anyone.' I say. 'I'll sleep when I'm ready.'
'Is there anything I can to help you? I feel so useless being this far away.' He says with compassion.
'No. I've been through a lot tonight and will probably sleep soon. I thought about getting drunk but knew that wouldn't help so didn't open anymore beer. I have to start dealing with things on my own.' I say.
'But Matt you need help with this.' He says.
'No I'm doing OK, I'll be OK.' I say more firmly.
'Please go to sleep soon.' He pleads. I hear a noise in the background and Christian must cover the mouthpiece as I hear a muffled 'I'll come back to bed in a few minutes, I just need to help Matt.'
'Say hello to him and don't take too long.' I hear Ana say.
'Matt, are you still there?' Christian asks.
'Yes. Go back to bed with Ana. I'll go to bed now.' I say.
'With Hannah?' he asks.
'Why would you ask that?' I ask him.
'Because I know you. You will have decided on where you're sleeping and then you will just crash somewhere else. Your room in that house is too small for you both but it wouldn't surprise me if you went there automatically and fell asleep.' He says. I wriggle uncomfortably, he does know me. 'I'm right aren't I?'
'Yes.' I say with a smirk and stand to move. 'OK, I'm climbing the stairs now and I'll go and curl up next to Hannah. Are you happy?'
'Very. I'll call you tomorrow. Sleep well.' He says and hangs up. I pause outside my small bedroom and smile at his words before going into the room next door which will now be mine and Hannah's. After a quick trip to the bathroom I let my clothes fall to the floor and then climb into bed. I watch Hannah sleep for a short while, she really is so beautiful. Eventually I lie next to her and as I drape an arm over her she snuggles into my chest and contented I fall asleep.
