Christian grabs my foot to stop me swimming as I tumble turn. 'You're supposed to be taking it easy. You've not stopped for the last thirty minutes. ' He says.
'This is easy.' I say. 'I'm not going too fast, this is what I can do.' I add and set off straight away doing four full strokes of butterfly before turning and doing breaststroke back to him.
'Enough, stop showing off. How come you never swam competitively, you would have been good enough.' He says.
'Because I just didn't. Probably the same reason that I never did kickboxing at competitions or rowing regattas like you did or even joined the bands that they wanted me to for trumpet and french horn.' I mutter.
'When you were small you were always interested in the trophies that I won and kept saying that one day you wanted to win some especially if they were bigger.' He says.
'Things changed.' I say and then set off very slowly in a lazy front crawl away from him so that he can't continue the conversation. I climb out at the steps at the far end away from him and grab the towel I left on the sun lounger. As I dry myself and then sit down Christian approaches slowly before picking up his towel.
'Another moment.' He says.
'Something like that.' I say. 'Sounds like Elliots back' I can hear him talking in his usual loud way.
'Hey guys.' Elliot shouts from the terrace. 'I'll be down in a minute.'
'I'm not going back in the water, I want to rest now so that I can surf with you both later.' I say.
'Good, Elliot can spend some time with Mia. You need time with Hannah and I've got things to do.' Christian says as Elliot approaches.
'Hi Elliot. Have a good shop?' I ask.
'Yes but Matt you need to get your bank card back from Mia before she goes to the mall again.' Elliot says with a smirk.
'I forgot she still had it.' I say. 'Seriously she can't have spent that much in an hour, can she?'
'Yes.' Says Christian as he laughs at my expression of horror. 'Matt, when was the last time you went shopping with her. If she has a free rein there's no stopping her.'
'Never give your bank card to a woman.' Elliot warns. 'Especially if her name is Mia.'
'Are you talking about me?' Mia asks as she approaches us.
'Bank card.' I say.
'Oh I'll give it back to you later.' Mia says. Hannah is following close behind her. I look at her warily, wondering if she's in a mood with me about where I slept last night. I stand to kiss her.
'Hi baby, shall we go for a walk on the beach?' I say quietly to her.
'Yes.' She says and smiles shyly. As I take her hand I see Christian nod in the direction of Ryan and Andrews and I assume that one of them will follow us.
'Hannah, I'm really sorry about last night. I just fell asleep.' I say as soon as we're out of earshot of my siblings.
'Matt, it's OK. You didn't do it on purpose. Christian explained to me this morning how you have a habit of just crashing out wherever you are.' She says.
'I know, but I should have just come and got in bed with you instead of lying on my other bed.' I say.
'It's not a problem.' She says before adding. 'Have you been talking to Elliot about us? He's been asking me some questions whilst we were out shopping.'
'Like what?' I groan, wondering what my brother has been up to.
'When we passed a jewellers he asked if I had the chance would I pick out a ring and marry you today.' She says. I stop and pull her close to me in a hug.
'And your answer was?' I say as I hold my breath almost dreading her reply.
'I told him yes because I love you but we're both still too young.' She says as I breathe a sigh of relief. 'So why was he asking?'
'Because yesterday evening when we were talking Elliot said that if I messed you about then I would have him and Christian sorting me out. I told him it wasn't a problem because I would marry you tomorrow and have babies with you. I think it shocked them both. I'm sorry if Elliot teased you about it. I'll have words with him.' I say.
'Hey it's fine. Elliot wasn't that bad.' She says.
'So tell me, was Mia really bad with my bank card today. Have we got any money left?' I say and Hannah goes bright red in the face.
'Matt, I'm sorry. I feel so guilty. Mia actually only paid with your card for something that I wanted but Elliot and her managed to talk me into spending a lot more money than I anticipated. I'll pay you back.' Hannah says and turns away as if she's scared of my reaction.
'What did you buy baby?' I ask gently and she slowly turns to face me.
'It was a photo printer. I thought I could print the pictures I took myself, rather than have a shop print them and someone finding out where you were if they realised it was you.' She says.
'That's a really great idea Hannah.' I say.
'Matt, we spent three thousand dollars in total by the time they talked me into getting a really decent printer and then the spare ink and photo paper. I almost passed out when I heard the amount but Mia just handed over your card and told me not to worry about it.' She says as we start to walk again towards the water's edge.
'Good, I'm glad she did.' I say.
'You're not angry?' she asks.
'Far from it. I'm delighted. You can print photos when you want and as you said no-one else needs to see them. Did Mia get an album for mom?' I ask.
'Yes and Elliot and Mia chose one for themselves so I got one for us and then we thought we'd better get one for Christian. Mia bought all of them though, she wouldn't put them on your card.' Hannah says.
'Wow, I'm impressed with her.' I say. 'It will be good to put the albums together. I think there's also some photos on that memory card from when we went sailing with mom and dad.'
'Yes there are and your dad took some really good ones of the two of us together. Would you mind if I gave one of them to my mom?' she asks.
'Yes that's OK.' I say. 'That was before I was sick.' I add quietly.
'But you're getting better, think positive.' She says.
'I'm back at the hospital tomorrow.' I say.
'I'll come with you, no arguments.' She says and smiles at me.
'Fine.' I say before changing the subject. 'We're going to see some friends on Saturday.'
'Friends, here.' She says puzzled.
'Jonty, Adam and Josie are flying out on Saturday. His parent's house is a five minute drive from here.' I say and smile at her reaction.
'Oh wow, it will be so good to see the guys again. I can't wait to catch up with Josie.' Hannah says excitedly. She turns to me and I hug her once again, kissing her briefly on the lips.
'Nice surprise.' I say.
'Yes, when did you find out? How come you didn't tell me sooner?' She says.
'Late last night and this is the first opportunity I've had to tell you.' I say with a smile. 'Come, let's paddle for five minutes and then we'll go back to the house. It's almost lunchtime and then I'll need to sleep.'
'OK, I'll ask Elliot to help me set up this printer and then he can show me how to use it.' She says as she absentmindedly kicks the water up.
'Are you trying to get me wet on purpose?' I ask her laughing as I do and then I pick her up and hold her over the water as I walk a little deeper.
'Matt, please.' She pleads. 'Please don't drop me.'
'Do you dare me?' I ask with a smirk.
'No Matt, I know you'd do it then but I'm scared.' She says. I immediately turn and take her out of the water. Putting her down so she's standing on the sand I pull her into a hug and she hugs me back.
'Baby, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you.' I say.
'I'm OK now I've got my feet back on the ground.' She says.
'Your swimming lessons start tomorrow afternoon. I want you to get over this fear of water. Hopefully before we leave we can swim in the sea together and even when we get back home I'll take you swimming a few times a week. I don't want you to be frightened.' I say. 'Next time we come here I want to teach you to surf and I think there's a kayak but I'd rather you were water confident before we take it out.'
'When did you learn to swim?' she asks.
'I don't remember, it's just something I've always done. Come on, let's wander back.' I say as I take her hand once more. Andrews is in the distance watching over us and Ryan is a little further down the beach. As we approach the garden Taylor and Sawyer appear and they set off towards Ryan. Christian is also walking down the garden rather quickly.
'Oh good you're here.' He says.
'Have we done something wrong? I ask.
'No not at all, Ryan just wants Taylor and Sawyer to check something out. Lunch is almost ready, do you want to change into something else.' Christian asks looking at my swimming shorts.
'No, I'll be fine like this. We'll be eating outside. I'll put a t-shirt on though.' I say.
'I'll get you one Matt, I need to go up to the bedroom for something anyway.' Hannah says.
'Thanks Hannah.' I say as I kiss her cheek and she heads into the house.
'Is everything OK between you and Hannah? Did you manage to smooth things over after last night?' Christian asks with genuine concern.
'Yes all is good. It helped that you had talked to her though but remind me to have words with Elliot, he actually asked her if she would marry me today.' I say.
'And her answer was?'
'Yes.' I mutter.
'I'll have words with Elliot, you don't need his teasing right now.' Christian says. 'He's just gone to shower and Mia was calling mom. I've done all the photocopying and sorted my bag out, I put everything else in your bag. It's all locked in the cupboard at the moment.'
'Thanks big bro.' I say. 'I'm going to play the piano until it's time to eat. I feel like I'm all over the place at the minute and need to calm down.'
'OK, go and relax. I'll go and find Elliot and have words with him now.' Christian says. 'We'll come and get you when it's lunchtime.' I head to the piano and I'm soon lost in the music and slowly start to relax.
