'Hi mom.' I say as soon as I put the phone to my ear.
'Hi darling boy. How are you?' mom asks
'Good mom, real good.' I say happily.
'And Elliot, what did you do to Elliot?' mom asks.
'Nothing.' I say guiltily.
'Matthew Grey.' She scolds as I start to walk towards the house.
'I pushed him in the pool mom.' I say quietly.
'Are you getting your mischief back?' she asks with a sigh.
'No er yes but I'll try not to get in trouble at school when I go back.' I say with a smile.
'I should hope not. I think Hannah will keep you in check now rather than join in with you.' Mom says. 'Despite all the times we sat outside the principal's office I like it when you're up to your mischief. It's who you are Matt , I know you're happy then.'
'Really mom. I always thought you and dad were disappointed in me.' I say as I flop down on one of the sofas in the tv room.
'No darling, we love you so much we could never be disappointed.' Mom says.
'But dad used to say he was.' I mutter.
'To try and get you to behave.' Mom says.
'Oh, I thought he was and that he didn't like me.' I say.
'Matt, you take everything to heart.'
'I know mom. I can't help it.' I mutter. 'I made Elliot cry last night.'
'Elliot, cry, really.' Mom says surprised.
'Yes mom. I was going to do something to surprise you at Christian's wedding. I did it last night but it made Elliot cry and he said that I had to tell you now because it would be a shock and you might get upset.'
'What is it? Tell me.' Mom says.
'The others think I can sing. I sang 'Feeling Good' and Elliot got upset. He said he remembered daddy singing it.' I say. Mom doesn't say anything in reply. 'Mom, are you still there?'
'Yes darling. I wish I could have been there to hear you.' Mom says quietly.
'Oh mom, I could sing it for you now or do you want to wait til I come home.' I say.
'Now.' Mom says so I stand and walk to the living room and settle at the piano.
'Are you ready mom?' I ask as I stand the phone on top of the piano and put it on speaker.
'Yes.' She whispers. I start to play and then sing, losing myself in the tune and song.
'Mom.' I whisper when I finish. She doesn't reply but I can hear she's still there. 'Mom.' I repeat.
'Matt, your mom's a bit emotional at the moment.' Dad says.
'Hi dad, I didn't realise you were there. I'm sorry I didn't want to upset mom.' I say.
'She'll be OK. It brought back so many memories. You're very good, as good as your daddy.' Dad says.
'You heard.' I say quietly.
'Yes, mom brought the phone through to my study and put it on loudspeaker.' Dad says.
'Oh. I don't want anyone to know dad. Christian says people at the wedding won't say anything but how can he be so sure?' I ask.
'He'll get all the guests to sign an NDA.' Dad says.
'What's that? I've never heard of that before.' I say.
'A non-disclosure agreement. It wouldn't surprise me if he's not had something drawn up already so that even though the guests are close friends and family then they can't tell others especially the press about what goes on at the wedding or sell any photos they might take.' Dad says.
'Can he do that?' I ask.
'Matt this is Christian we're talking about. You know he does whatever he wants.' Dad says.
'Will he make me sign one?' I ask.
'I doubt it very much, you're probably the one person he trusts more than anyone else.' Dad says.
'Really.' I mutter. 'Dad, is mom OK now?'
'Yes and don't try and act surprised and change the subject. You know you and Christian will always have a special bond. When he knew you were ill again yesterday nothing would stop him from coming to check you out.' dad says.
'I know dad.' I say.
'Good. Mom is ready to talk again now. I'll speak to you soon. Take care and enjoy the rest of your vacation.' Dad says.
'I will dad. Bye.' I say.
'Hi again darling.' Mom says.
Hi mom. I'm sorry I upset you.' I say quietly as I walk out onto the terrace. I squint at the brightness of the sunshine. Hannah is talking to Christian and Elliot. She nods slowly at something Christian says and he pulls her close to hug her. I feel my body stiffen and narrow my eyes jealously wondering what is going on.
'I was just so shocked darling. You were very good.' Mom says pulling me back into the conversation. Christian kisses Hannah's cheek and then Elliot hugs her and kisses her forehead. 'It took me back to when you were small and your daddy used to sing and you would try and join in. You often made up the words if you didn't know them.' I walk across the garden and through the arch of flowers to the summerhouse so that I can't watch what's going on with my brothers and girlfriend.
'Did I sing when they…you know…' I stutter.
'No, not that I remember. I haven't heard you. When did you start singing?' mom asks.
'I don't know, just when I was in the house on my own when Mia was in Paris and you and dad were at work. I could always play the tunes on the piano and I would sing along with the words in my head but one day they came out. I wish they hadn't now.' I mutter.
'Oh Matt, you are a funny one.' Mom says affectionately.
'That's what Elliot says.' I say. 'Mom I've got to go to the hospital tomorrow for the tests. I'm worried.'
'Don't be, have you been OK today?' mom asks.
'Yes great. I've had a swim with Christian and a walk on the beach with Hannah. I'm going to rest now and then go for a surf with Christian and Elliot.' I say.
'See you're fine. Stop worrying.' Mom says gently.
'I'll try mom.' I say.
'Go and enjoy your rest and time with your brothers before they fly home. I'll call you tomorrow afternoon to find out how things are.' Mom says.
'OK mom. I love you.' I say.
'I love you too.' Mom says and hangs up. I sit staring into space for a while before standing and walking out of the summer house.
'There you are.' Christian says almost making me jump. 'We wondered where you'd got to.'
'I was on the phone to mom.' I say quietly.
'Are you OK? He asks and I nod as I start to walk towards the house. 'Matt, slow down. I brought a permanent marker.' I stop and turn back in the opposite direction and head for the recording studio. I shove my hands in my pockets and put my head down. On reaching the door I punch in the code and open the door. I head straight for the gold disc that I need and take it from the wall as Christian hands me the pen. Drawing a line through the two codes to cover them I hand he pen back and re-hang the disc. I exit the studio and Christian follows so I close the door firmly. He puts his head to one side questionably but doesn't say anything. I take a deep breath before I talk to him.
'What's happened? I saw you and Elliot talking to Hannah, you both hugged and kissed her.' I say.
'She's missing her mom.' Christian says but looks away.
'And' I say. He looks back at me but I narrow my eyes at him. 'Just fucking tell me. She wouldn't have come to you just to tell you that. Something has happened otherwise why didn't she come and find me.'
'Are you feeling up to a quick surf now?' Christian asks.
'Stop changing the fucking subject.' I say angrily.
'Stop getting angry and answer the question.' Christian replies.
'Yes.' I mutter sullenly.
'Good, we'll head down to the surf shed and get some wetsuits on.' He says and sets off towards the beach.
'I thought you wanted me to rest.' I say as I walk beside him.
'You won't be on the board long. Then you can rest before surfing properly with us later.' He says. I give him a puzzled look so he continues. 'Matt, when you were on the beach with Hannah earlier some fucker took photos of you and tried to sell them to the Seattle Times. It was Kate on the phone earlier at the dinner table, she would only phone me if it was important otherwise she would have called Elliot, that's why I knew I needed to take the call. Ryan had seen something glinting in the sun but when he went to investigate with Taylor and Sawyer there was no-one there. Then I get the call from Kate.'
'I didn't have a t-shirt on.' I mutter.
'I know. I hope you don't mind but I've suggested to Kate that Hannah takes some photos of you, me and Elliot surfing together. She is going to do an article about us having brotherly time surfing before the wedding but that we're due back in Seattle tomorrow, which me and Elliot are and no-one will know any different as the company jet leaves later today. You can decide which photos we send to Kate. Hannah was in the photo with you that was sent but she was upset and was having a wobble about everything. Elliot and I were just reassuring her that everything would be OK. She's happy to take the photos but would rather not be in them. We've got to try and get them to Kate within the next hour.'
'OK I agree. Let's keep Hannah out of them. We'll send some of us three together. Let's get this over with as quickly as possible. I'm shattered and need to rest and I'd quite like some quiet time with Hannah. Before you say anything I know we can't do anything but I think we just need time to relax on our own.' I say as we arrive at the beach. Elliot is already there and has a wetsuit on. He's dragging some surfboards out of the shed.
'Hannah has just gone to get the camera. I've got the boards ready so you just have to get your suits on.' Elliot says.
'Thanks Elliot.' Christian says.
'Thanks.' I mutter. 'I'm sorry I pushed you in the pool earlier.'
'No worries, it's the least I can expect from you.' Elliot says with a huge grin on his face. I grin back at him as I enter the shed pulling my t-shirt over my head as I go. Elliot throws me a wetsuit and I start to put it on. I'd forgotten how much I hate putting these things on. 'Yes Matt you do need to wear one and I know what you're thinking because you're pulling faces as you try and get it on.'
'Don't watch, just leave me to struggle with it. You know it takes me ages and I can't do it.' I say sulkily.
'Because you're always in too much of a rush, just take it slow.' Christian says as he pulls up the zip on the back of his. I look at him in amazement, how did he get it on so quickly? 'S-l-o-w-l-y.' he emphasises and smirks at me.
'Leave me be otherwise I'll never get it on.' I say.
'We'll be right outside the door.' Christian says as they move to leave. I continue my struggle but eventually I'm zipping up the back and make my way out to join my brothers. I can see Hannah and Mia are sat together on the sand waiting for us and Ryan and Andrews are stood a short distance away. Taylor and Sawyer must be somewhere else.
'I'm ready.' I say and smile at both Elliot and Christian.
'Hopefully two waves should do it, remember we just want a few good photos so don't push yourself this time.' Christian says.
'I know, but I'm still excited.' I say. Elliot grins at me and picking up a board he sets off to the ocean. I hesitate and look over at Hannah again.
'What's the matter, I thought you'd be in first.' Christian asks.
'Hannah's wobble earlier. Is she having doubts about us?' I ask quietly.
'Don't be stupid. Jeez Matt, she loves you. She just needed some reassurance about the photographs. After this week things will quieten down. People are just interested at the moment because it's all been brought up again. Your daddy was very popular in Seattle, he did a lot of charitable work and gave a lot of money to schools in the city and also hospitals for medical research. All those years ago he owned a lot of the companies in Seattle so people relied on him for work and he was generous in the wages he paid. Come on I'll race you to catch the first wave.' He says and with that he picks up his board and heads for the water. I shake my head at him but follow.
