'Any requests?' I ask as I sit back down on the lounger with the guitar.
'Surprise me with one.' Hannah says and smiles at me shyly.
'Here goes.' I say as I start to strum.
'It's amazing how you
Can speak right to my heart.
Without saying a word
You can light up the dark.
Try as I may, I could never explain
What I hear when you don't say a thing.
The smile on your face
Lets me know that you need me.
There's a truth in your eyes
Saying you'll never leave me.
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me wherever I fall.
You say it best when you say nothing at all.
All day long I can hear
People talking out loud
But when you hold me near
You drown out the crowd
Try as they may, they can never define
What's been said between your heart and mine.
The smile on your face
Lets me know that you need me.
There's a truth in your eyes
Saying you'll never leave me.
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me wherever I fall.
You say it best when you say nothing at all.'
'Wow.' Hannah says when I finish the song. 'Do you realise how good you actually are?'
'No.' I say and look at her shyly. She smiles at me and takes my hand, I pull her towards me and let my lips brush against hers. 'What I would give to kiss you properly and make love to you. I'm desperate to show you how much I love you.' I say quietly.
'You just need to be patient.' Hannah says. 'Matt earlier when I was mad with you, you do know it won't be the first or last time. We will have our ups and downs.'
'I like the sound of the ups.' I say and she giggles.
'You are so rude, I'm trying to be serious.' She says.
'I don't like you being serious and I don't like you being mad.' I say.
'Well don't do things that make me cross.' Hannah says but she's grinning at me.
'I'll try.' I say seriously.
'It's time.' Shouts Mia interrupting us as she approaches the terrace. 'We'll do one foot each.' She adds to Hannah. I groan. I rest against the longer and they sit at the end painting the nails on one foot each.
'What's taking so long?' I ask.
'We're using the nail art pens to create different designs on each toe.' Hannah says. 'Look you have a surf board on the big one and I've done a heart on the next and then flowers.'
'That's good, what have you done Mia?' I ask.
'A car on the big one and just patterns on the rest.' Mia says. 'They look good though and I'm almost finished.'
'Did Elliot or Christian ever let you do their nails?' Hannah asks Mia.
'Don't be silly. I've had Matt to practise on the last fifteen years so I didn't even ask them. I've practised make-up on him and hair dye but he drew the line when I tried to wax his legs, he screamed when I tore the first strip off and refused to let me touch him with it again.'
'It hurt.' I say.
'Since Matt was little he never minded me doing this sort of stuff to him and it made him sit still for once. Christian used to be horrified when he saw him and would refuse to talk to him sometimes until it was cleaned off. When we were younger I used to do his hair and put clips and slides and other stuff in it and sometimes he would then go off and play and forget and end up going out like that.' Mia says with a giggle.
'Christian disowned me then until it was all taken out.' I mutter.
'I love hearing stories of what you were like when you were small. I know I was with you at school but it's great to hear the ones of you from home.' Hannah says.
'I've got loads to tell you then.' Mia says.
'Mia.' I warn.
'Are you all ready for dinner?' Mrs Richards asks as she comes onto the terrace and starts to set the table. Dr. Richards is with her.
'Sure.' I say.
'How have you been today Matthew?' Dr Richards asks.
'Good.' I say as Hannah and Mia stand up from the lounger and start to go inside. I make to stand and sit back down.
'You were good.' Dr Richards says.
'I've felt great all day.' I say.
'Until now.'
'Yes, how long is it going to be until I feel better?' I say with frustration.
'Tell me about your day.' He says. I proceed to tell him about the morning swim and then the surfing. 'And you felt OK throughout it all.'
'Yes though tired after about forty minutes when we surfed this afternoon so I stopped.' I say.
'Good.' He says and looks thoughtful. 'Can you stand now and we'll walk round the garden.'
'Yes.' I say puzzled.
'Why did you wince when you stood up, are you in pain?' he asks.
'Sort of, I was on the beach with Hannah and fell awkwardly when we were messing about.' I say and look at him worriedly.
'Sit back down and take your shirt off whilst I examine you.' He says. I do as I'm told and he starts to feel my back. 'Any pain here?'
'No, it's more my arm and shoulder. Are you worried it's my spleen?' I ask.
'Yes. I want to take you to hospital now and just scan it as a precaution. We'll do all the tests I need to do now as well so that it will save you a trip in the morning and then hopefully we'll have some results tonight.' He says gently. I drop my head, shit, this has been a great day and now it ends with this. 'Hey, I'm being extra cautious. I'd rather get this sorted now so that we can be home in an hour and enjoy the evening rather than leaving it until tomorrow.'
'An hour.' I say.
'Two at the most with travelling time. Do you want Hannah and Mia to come with us?' he asks.
'No, they can have dinner and I'll eat later. Sawyer can take us. Let's go.' I say.
'Matthew slow down you need to tell them where you're going.' Dr Richards says.
'But Hannah will think it's her fault and Mia will call mom.' I say. 'Please can you speak to Mrs Richards and she can tell them that we're going to check something out but not tell them where we're going.'
'OK, I'll go and find her now. I'll be ready to go in five minutes.' He says.
'I'll go and find Sawyer.' I say and head inside. After informing Sawyer of our plans I climb the stairs and change into some jeans and a clean shirt before dragging my converse on. As I head back downstairs Sawyer and Dr Richards are waiting for me. 'I'm ready.'
'You don't want to say goodbye.' Dr Richards says.
'No, too many questions and it will get awkward.' I mutter as I open the front door. As I walk out Sawyer and Dr Richards follow me and then Sawyer opens the rear passenger door. I climb in the back and he shuts the door behind me as he and Dr Richards both get in the front. As the car pulls out of the drive my phones vibrates.
'Hi baby.' I say as I answer it.
'What are you up to Matthew Grey?' Hannah says.
'Please don't get mad.' I say.
'Just tell me.'
'I'm going for my hospital appointment now.' I mutter.
'Are you ill?' she asks.
'No but Dr Richards just wants to check me out. Have dinner with Mia and I'll be back soon. I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye, I didn't want any fuss.' I say.
'You're not hiding anything from me are you.' She says.
'Yes.' I say, I can't lie to her.
'Tell me.' She says.
'I had a dizzy spell and my shoulder and arm hurt from when I fell over.'
'It's my fault.' She says quietly.
'No, this is why I didn't want to tell you but I couldn't lie to you. I'll call you as soon as I know.' I say. 'I love you baby.'
'I love you too.' She says. 'See you soon, take care and call me.' She says before clicking off. The phone vibrates immediately and I press the accept button.
'Hi Mia.' I say with a sigh.
'Elliot is right you are a little shit.' Mia says. 'Why the hell didn't you tell us?'
'I'm sorry, I didn't want any fuss. Please don't call mom, she will worry.' I say.
'Christian.' She says.
'He's in the air and won't pick his messages up for another five hours so it won't make any difference.' I say.
'Unless I call air traffic control and get them to give a message to the pilot.' Mia says.
'No Mia, please.' I plead. 'He will turn the jet round.'
'You should have thought about that before you sneaked off without saying goodbye.' Mia says.
'Please Mia, I'll take you shopping tomorrow for something for Saturday night.' I say.
'But you hate shopping.' Mia says.
'I know.' I mutter.
'You'd do that for me.' Mia says in surprise.
'Yes.' I whisper.
'OK, I won't make any more phone calls but you must call Hannah as soon as you know anything and tell us how you are.' Mia says.
'I promise.' I say. 'Laters.' I click off and put my head back on the rest and close my eyes.
'Matthew we're here.' Dr Richards says as he opens the car door.
'An hour.' I say.
'Hopefully. Matthew have you got a fear of hospitals?' Dr Richards asks.
'Yes.' I mutter. 'It's never good news and they always keep you longer than you want to be there.'
'Not always. I thought with your mom being a doctor then you wouldn't mind them.' He says as we enter and walk down a corridor. 'In here.'
'Well dad's a lawyer and I wouldn't want to end up in court either.' I say and he laughs.
'Shirt off and hop up on the bed, we'll do the scan first.' He says. I do as he asks and he squeezes some cold gel onto me before starting the scan. I feel like I'm holding my breath waiting for him to say something but he's concentrating. 'Looks good, no sign of bleeding. X-ray next.'
'X-ray?' I question.
'Your arm and shoulder.'
'It doesn't feel broken.' I say.
'It's a precaution. Every time you've been here I've x-rayed you for something.' He says.
'I don't remember.' I mutter as I follow him once more.
'When you all came it was your arm, when you came with just your daddy it was your leg and then you came with your mommy and daddy and it was your ankle. Nothing was broken though.' He says and smiles at me.
'You must have looked forward to us going back to Seattle.' I say.
'Not at all. It was great having you around. Ruth, Mrs Richards always looked forward to your visits and she's delighted that you're here again. Are you likely to visit the house often?' he asks.
'Yes. We're all coming in the school autumn break and I think I'll come whenever I can. I feel really relaxed here and I sleep well.' I say.
'You don't normally sleep?' he asks.
'No not very well.' I say.
'Lie on here.' He says and puts my arm in a certain position. 'I remember you being very active when you were small but you always slept at night.'
'Until the nightmares came.' I say and shut my eyes. 'I've been OK here.'
'I'll be back in a minute.' He says as he disappears behind a screen. 'Nothing broken.' He adds as he reappears. I stand to follow him once more.
'Where are we going now?' I ask.
'Blood tests.' He says.
'Urgh I hate those. I've still got the bruise from last time.' I say.
'I'll try and be gentle, when did you last eat?' he asks.
'Six hours ago but I had a glass of juice just before you saw me.' I say.
'That's ok. In here, just sit on the chair.' He says and has the blood out of my arm before I have chance to even think about it.
'Do you do everything so quickly?' I say.
'I'm aware you don't like hospitals and you only want to be here for an hour max so I'm just trying to be efficient with the time we have.' He says. A nurse comes in and takes the blood from him and then another man comes in. Dr Richards has a word with him.
'Matthew I just need to feel your arm and shoulder.' The man says. I look at him. 'I'm a physiotherapist, my names Guy.'
'Ok Guy.' I say as he starts to manipulate my arm. I wince as he touches a tender spot.
'In here.' He says and I nod. 'You've strained the muscle.' He massages it for a few minutes. 'Does it feel any better?'
'A little.' I say.
'OK Dan, it's not too bad. Can you ice it tomorrow and get Ruth to massage this area in the morning and the afternoon for the next couple of days and I'll see you here on Monday.' Guy says.
'Ruth's a trained physio as well Matthew' Dr Richard's says as an explanation.
Ok, thank you Guy.' I say.
'No problems.' He says and leaves the room.
'Can we go home now?' I ask.
'Impatient as always.' He says and I nod and smile at him. 'No, I want you on a tread mill for ten minutes but wired up to a heart monitor and blood pressure machine follow me.' He says and I follow him once more.
'I've not done these tests before.' I say.
'I know, I'm just looking into your physical fitness.' He says.
'It feels non-existent at the moment.' I mutter.
'You'd be surprised.' He says as we enter another room ' Open wide.' He says and then puts a swab in my mouth. 'It's a saliva test.' He explains 'Blow.' I put my mouth on the tube and blow hard. 'That's a spirometer, it measures your lung capacity. Now on the treadmill.' Once again I do as I'm told and stand as he attaches the machines. 'OK start walking.' The pace is slow but picks up gradually until I'm doing a slow jog. At a gentle run my breathing becomes harder but I keep going until Dr Richards switches the button and the machine starts to slow down again. As it comes to a complete halt he hands me a bottle of water. 'Blow again.' He says as he hands me the spirometer. I comply and then he writes down the measurement.
'Is there anything wrong?' I ask.
'No, you're very fit.' He says. 'I'm more interested in the blood results, they'll email them to me so we should have them by the time we get home. There's one that I'm very interested in, it's a common symptom of glandular fever but quite often gets overlooked.' He says as we start walking again. 'We're done here by the way so can go back to the house now.'
'That was quick.' I say.
'I told you it wouldn't be long.' He says as we approach the car where Sawyer is waiting.
'I'd better call Hannah.' I say as we climb in the car.
'I'll call Ruth and tell her to have your dinner ready.' Dr Richards says as he gets in the front.
'Hi Baby.' I say as Hannah answers her phone.
'How are you?' Hannah demands.
'Good, on the way back to the house.' I say.
'Is that all you're going to say?' she asks.
'OK here's more detail, I've strained a muscle in my arm but nothing is broken. My spleen is OK and the results of the blood test will be emailed through before we arrive back. Happy.' I say.
'Yes very. I was worried I'd hurt you.' She says.
'Don't be, I'm OK.' I say.
'Your mom just called Mia to ask how everything was and if you were ok after Christian and Elliot left.' Hannah says.
'Did Mia say where I was?' I ask.
'You're in the bath.' Hannah says and giggles. I smile.
'I owe her a dress and shoes.' I say.
'And maybe a new bracelet.' Mia shouts from the background.
'Anything darling sister.' I say with a smile.
'Mom still wants to speak to you.' Mia says.
'We'll be home in five minutes so I'll call her then.' I say. 'What's for dinner? I'm hungry now.'
'You're having lasagne.' Hannah says. 'You wouldn't have liked what we had.'
'Which was?'
'Salmon.' Hannah says.
'You're right, I'd rather have the lasagne and I've tried something new today already.' I say. 'I'll see you in a minute baby, love you.'
'Me too Matt.' She says and I click off. The gates open and Sawyer enters the drive. As I climb out of the car Dr Richards walks into the house with me.
'The results are in and they are as I thought.' Dr Richards says.
'Are they that bad?' I ask.
'No not at all. Easily fixed, your HB levels are low so you're anaemic . We'll get you some iron tablets and it will pick up quite quickly.' He says.
'Does that mean I can have a beer and…' I ask.
'No alcohol for now, it slows the iron absorption in your body. You can do anything else though but listen to your body and plenty of rest still.' He says and smiles at me. 'Apart from the physio which Ruth can do you don't need to come back to the hospital until Monday. I normally ask my patients about their diet and lifestyle but Ruth can tell me what you're eating and I'll check in an evening what you've been up to so that I can build up a picture of what's going on. Are you happy with that?'
'Very, thank you for this evening.' I say.
'No worries. Go and find Hannah whilst I go to the kitchen.' He says.
