Addison Montgomery had never felt more right in her decision to moved back to Seattle all those years ago when she had the pleasure of being present on days like these. She entered the birthing suit and gloved up as her patient screamed out in pain as another contraction rippled through her body. The mother to be looked up at her partner with pure venom in her eyes.
"I hate you so much right now. You did this to me! It hurts so much, I want it out of me, NOW!"
"Relax honey, you're doing so well. Just breath. In, out. In, out."
The brunette reached out with her fist and grabbed the front of her partners shirt, bunching it as she pulled them forward until they were nose to nose. "You don't get to say a word right now, this is all your fault. Oh God!"
The blonde nodded yes, not daring to say a word as another contraction gripping her body as Addison gave her patient a kind smile. The nurses helped to transfer her feet into stirrups as Addison performed an examination, the fetal monitor continuing to steadily beep away. The heartbeat of her child calmed her somewhat as she looked at Addison and the kind nurses surrounding her.
"I changed my mind, someone give me the epidural, for the love of God, get me the drugs."
Addison shook her head. "Okay Sofia, I'm sorry but it looks like you're fully dilated now so I won't be able to give you an epidural. But here's the good news, it's finally time to meet your baby."
Sofia nodded at Addison before looking over at Ryan Sullivan, her husband of five years and the kindest man she ever met. His brown eyes looked into hers with nothing but pure love as he took her hand and kissed the palm, the worry on her face evident now it was time to bring their little one into the world. They had met freshman year at Washington State, both studying finance and it was love at first sight for both of them. They had married a year after they finished school but they had wanted to wait a while to start having kids so they could establish their careers. Sophia was working for the largest accounting firm in Seattle while Ryan was the head accountant for an all natural food company that specialised in making healthy alternatives for children. It had come as a surprise to them both when Sofia found out she was pregnant but they couldn't have been happier to start their family.
"I love you Sofia."
"I love you too Ryan. I'm sorry I said I hated you."
Ryan laughed, kissed her forehead and then grimaced when another powerful contraction had Sofia almost lifting off the bed and squeezing his hand in a vice like grip. The monitor beeped faster as Addison gave Sofia's knee a pat in reassurance.
"You're doing great Sofia. Okay, ready...push."
In the waiting room of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital maternity ward the air was filled with anticipation. Callie and Arizona sat beside each other, their hands clasped firmly together as their son paced the room, their other daughter reading a magazine, her leg bouncing impatiently as they waited for news of their first grandchild and niece or nephew. A few people who couldn't be there had sent their good luck messages via text, most notable long time friends Erica and Natalie and of course Miranda and Ben, who just happened to be enjoying a second honeymoon but still took the time to pass on their congratulations. Meredith and Derek stopped by as did Alex and Jo, April and Matthew and of course Cristina and her husband, Dr Bradley Smith.
It seemed Callie wasn't the only one who was on the receiving end of his flirting when he first came to Seattle all those years ago for the Harper Avery Award dinner, it was just Cristina was far more receptive of it than Callie was. They had maintained a long distance relationship for the first couple of years until Bradley couldn't stand it anymore and applied for a job at the hospital. Luckily for him, the newly appointed head of the Ortho department, one Dr Calliope Torres, was more than happy to hire him on the spot. As much as Cristina had loved Owen, Bradley was perfect for her and she and Owen were finally able to let each other go and move on with their lives. Bradley understood Cristina's devotion to her career and they wanted the same things out of life. They just clicked and everyone was delighted to see Cristina happy and as for Owen, well, he found his soul mate about a year after the dinner. She was a sweetheart who baked cookies for the kids in the Peads ward, she was also a widower who had three kids of her own and one more with Owen a couple of years later, a son who was the spitting image of his father they named Theodore. She was a scrub nurse who was right under his nose the whole time and her name was Anne.
Meredith hadn't shown any signs of Alzheimer's and she and Derek were over the moon about it. They had even taken some time off to the see the world now Zola and Bailey were all grown up and beginning their lives. Zola went to Harvard to receive a law degree and finally settled permanently in Boston to work for one of the most prestigious firms in the country and Bailey is now playing in the NFL as a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, much to the delight of his father and his Aunty Callie.
Alex and Jo were married a couple of years after the storm, the proud parents of four kids if you could believe it. Three boys and a girl, all now just finishing high school or already starting college. Their names are Thomas, Richard, after a man they all respected, Harrison and Heather, after Jo's friend who was long gone but never forgotten.
April gave birth to a bouncing baby girl five and a half months after the Harper Avery dinner, a girl they named Hannah and two years after that a little boy they named Matthew but everyone always calls him Junior. They moved into a house not far from Callie and Arizona when they found out about April was pregnant with their second child, all the kids growing up together in one big extended family in and around Seattle. On most days you would probably find them at the hospital, usually getting into some sort of trouble.
And as for Callie and Arizona and their family, well a lot had happened in the last twenty-five years to the Robbins-Torres clan. The first year after the storm had been difficult to the say the least. Arizona had worked her way back into Callie's good graces and the two of them had worked on their relationship to the point where miscommunication and distrust never became an issue again. They had brought a nice house in the suburbs not long after their talk and they began planning for the addition to their family shortly after moving in.
"What do you think of this one Cal?"
Callie placed her glass of wine on the packing box beside her, the living room like the rest of the house still a shamble of unpacked boxes and makeshift storage areas. They had been in their dream home for a month now and it was hard to find the time to do everything at once when they lived such busy lives, but they made an agreement to unpack at least a box a day each and it was slowly but surely coming together.
Callie looked at the picture Arizona held in her hands, taking it from her wife's grasp, scrutinising the picture of the smiling man on one side and his profile on the other. She had a lot in common with this gentleman and they sort of looked alike which was a requirement Arizona insisted upon. Callie wasn't too fussed really, she wanted an Arizona clone and all she really cared about was finding a healthy donor to help them on their way but she had to admit this guy was everything they were looking for. Callie took another sip of wine as memories flashed in her mind, remembering how overwhelmed she felt when she was pregnant with Sofia and how grateful she had been to have two people by her side to help her, even though half the time they were fighting with each other. She just hoped she would be enough on her own to help Arizona through it all.
Callie put down the picture and took Arizona's hand. "I love you Arizona and I love what you want to do for us, for our family, but I need you to promise me that if you need help, even the smallest of things, that you'll tell me. I need to be there for you."
Arizona couldn't help but love her wife even more after her rambling statement. She knew that even after everything they had gone through Callie trusted her but she also knew that deeply ingrained in Callie's DNA was the need to protect her and help her even if sometimes she had been too stubborn to see it in the past. She had let her anger cloud her judgement when most people would've been grateful to have someone as caring as Callie by their side, someone willing to put up with a lot of shit and still stand beside them. Arizona knew her wife had insecurities and what she had done had only added to it but this was one instance she need not fear. Arizona had worked a lot on her stubborn behaviour with Stacy over the past year and it had paid off.
"I promise you I can do this and if for some reason I can't do something I will ask for your help. I've come a long way from that stubborn woman who wouldn't ask for help when she was drowning. I want to do this more than anything and I need you to trust me, trust that I'm not going to go back to my old ways and keep it all bottled up until it explodes and I do something stupid."
Callie leaned forward and placed a kiss on Arizona's lips, reassured by the resolute tone of her wife's voice that her doubts were unnecessary and deep down she knew everything would be just fine. "I do trust you Arizona, I just want to protect you. I want to hold your hand every step of the way and be there for you."
Arizona smiled as she took Callie's hand. "And you will be. Don't think I won't be making you go out for whatever I'm craving in the middle of the night. And don't think you won't be giving me massages whenever I want them. And don't ever think I won't tell you if something is bothering me or if I need help because I will."
"I will Arizona, I promise I will do anything you need me to. I'll get you ice cream at three in the morning and I'll come home after the busiest of days and run you a bath so you can soak while I cook us all dinner. I want to share every part of this with you. Every craving, every mood swing, every time our child kicks the crap out of you, I want to share it all with you."
"We're in this together Calliope Torres, you're not getting out of any of it." Callie laughed as Arizona sipped her wine and turned back to Callie. "So what do you really think of that guy?"
Callie pulled Arizona onto her waist untill she was straddling her, a giggle escaping her lips as Callie leaned up, her lips ghosting Arizona's as she smiled. "I think he's perfect. I think we've found him Arizona."
Arizona squealed and tackled Callie to the floor, her hair a waterfall that surrounded them as they kissed each other deeply before making love on the living room floor. With the donor finally picked it was time to knock one Arizona Robbins up.
It took six frustrating months before the IVF finally took and Arizona had to admit she was very nearly ready to give up, but then one day when her boobs felt sensitive and she was a week late Arizona immediately asked April to take her blood and send it off for testing. April who was only just back from maternity leave was happy to help and with a grin as wide as the Mississippi she handed the results to Arizona. Arizona felt the tears roll down her face as April embraced her friend, she was beyond ecstatic and she couldn't wait to share the news with Callie and Sofia. Arizona had only one surgery scheduled that day and being that it was an eight-hour marathon Callie thought she had stayed home to rest, but now she had the results she needed to tell Callie and fast, her head would burst if she had to keep it to herself until they saw each other later that night. With a thank you to April, Arizona took the elevator to the Ortho floor, the piece of paper burning a hole in her pocket as she found Callie hunched over the nurses desk, writing in a chart. Arizona crept up beside her wife and whispered in her ear.
"Excuse me Dr Torres, but we have a problem."
Callie nearly dropped the chart as she turned to Arizona, the flirting in her wife's voice evident. Callie smiled as she placed her pen back in her pocket and whispered in Arizona's ear.
"What seems to be the problem Dr Robbins."
Arizona whispered in Callie's ear again, her voice even more salacious than before. "You and I aren't in an on call room doing naughty things to each other."
Callie laughed heartily as she took Arizona's hand and making sure no one was watching, pulled Arizona into the on call room, locked the door and led her over to the bunk bed. Callie laid on top of Arizona and began to pepper her neck and shoulders with kisses, Arizona stopping them before they could go too far.
"Wait. I have to tell you something Calliope."
Arizona saying her full name made Callie halt her progress immediately and look up at her wife. "What? What's wrong?"
Arizona pushed Callie's hair behind her ears and cradled the face she loved so much. "Nothing's wrong, it's good news."
Arizona reached down and pulled the paper out of her pocket, unfolded it and held it up for Callie to see. Callie read the results and then reared up so fast she bumped her head on the top bunk. She squinted at the words on the page again as the realization hit her and hit her hard.
"Are you alright Cal?"
Arizona giggled as she inspected her wife's head for a bump as Callie continued to stare at the paper she had all but snatched out of Arizona's hands. "I'm...is this for real? We're gonna be Mommies again?"
Arizona nodded in the affirmative as Callie felt the tears trickle down her face. Callie leaned down and kissed her before leaning her forehead against Arizona's. "This is awesome, you are awesome. I can't believe it finally worked. I love you so much Arizona."
"I love you too Callie, so much. So, what do you think Sofia will say? Do you think we'll have a boy or a girl? What should we name the baby? Do you think he/she will look like you or me? What do you..."
Callie put her hand over Arizona's mouth, silencing one of her trademark rants. "Arizona, those are all good questions but right now I just want to make love to my pregnant wife."
"Well, have at it Calliope, time's a wasting." Callie kissed Arizona as they took their time making love, their happiness clear in every kiss, every movement they made. Their love and togetherness shinning through the darkness that had once overwhelmed them, the new life inside Arizona that would complete the healing they had begun over a year ago.
Eight months later all of Arizona's questions would be answered. Sofia was over the moon at the prospect of a little brother or sister and after many a disagreement they finally decided on a few names for their bundle of joy. Callie kept her promise and went out every time Arizona had a craving, she was by her side for every scan, every mood swing and every time Arizona needed help to ease the pain the extra weight of pregnancy added, Callie would be there to soothe her pain and thank her for again for doing this for their family. And as the contractions continued to get closer and closer the question of whether they were having a boy or a girl and who he/she would look like were about to be answered.
"Okay Arizona, PUSH!"
"Waaah!"
With a smattering of dirty blonde hair, blue eyes and his Mama's dimples, a baby boy was placed in Arizona's arms after Callie cut the cord. He was the near perfect Arizona clone Callie wanted, both Callie and Arizona falling in love with him at first sight. His hearty cries echoed around the room as Callie kissed her wife's sweaty forehead.
"You did it honey."
Arizona stroked the tiny face of their son before meeting Callie's eyes. "No, we did it."
Arizona was taken into a private suite to rest for a while, their son went off to the nursery for a rest of his own as Callie went into the waiting room to share the good news. All of their friends along with Arizona's parents and her father looked at Callie, eager for news.
"It's a boy! Eight pound exactly, ten little fingers and ten little toes and he looks so much like Arizona and she is doing just fine."
A cheer went up as Cristina yelled out from the back of the crowd. "What's his name?"
"Alexander Timothy Robbins-Torres, Xander for short."
Another cheer rang out as five-year old Sofia hugged her Mommy's legs as Carlos, Daniel and Barbara held her in a group hug, everyone else taking their turns congratulating Callie as she held Sofia's hand tightly in her own, Alex hugging her extra hard. He and Arizona were like brother and sister as well as mentor and student and the relationship they had cultured over the years had become one of the most important in Arizona's life. She had always felt like a gap existed in her life after she lost Tim and Nick and Alex was someone who helped to fill that gap. As the crowd dispersed Callie took Sofia, her father and her in-laws down the hall to Arizona's room to meet the newest member of their family. Everyone else would get to see him over the next couple of days, but right now it was all about family. Callie knocked lightly on the door and was answered with a 'come in'.
Sofia ran ahead and tried to jump up on the bed before Carlos helped her so she could hug her Mama. As they parted Sofia looked around the room. "Where's Xander Mama?"
At that moment a nurse brought in the crib, little Xander snuggled into the blanket, his tiny hands covered by blue mittens and his head with a beanie to match. Sofia gazed down in awe at her little brother. Sofia looked at Arizona and Callie as a shy smile came across her face.
"Can I hold him? Please?"
Xander made the tiniest of gurgling sounds as Callie brought over a chair right next to the bed as Daniel helped his granddaughter down off the bed, Callie gently picking up her son and placed him in his big sister's arms. Sofia was careful to cradle his head as she stared at the tiny human, his eyes peaking open and his finger latching onto Sofia's, Barbara sitting beside her granddaughter with an arm around her shoulders.
"Wow. He's so small."
Callie's hand slipped into Arizona's as a tear ran down both their faces, memories of how small their daughter had been when she was born replaying in their minds. Callie found her voice first. "He is Sof, but I can tell he loves you already."
Sofia nodded and smiled at her baby brother while he continued to hold onto her finger. "I love him too."
Two years later they went though it all again when Callie carried their third and last child. They used the same donor but this time it only took three months for it to work and it was Arizona who played nurse when Callie needed her help or if she just felt like milking it a little. One c-section nine months later Arizona held their second daughter, another clone of Callie and perfect in every way. They named her Gabriella April Robbins-Torres, Gabby for short. A now eight year old Sofia cradled her baby sister while two-year old Xander placed his hand gently on his new sisters hand and was delighted when she wrapped her fingers around his. He giggled as everyone around him laughed, Sofia smiling at her baby brother.
"That means she loves you Xand."
"Yeah?" His bright blue eyes, so much like his Mama's, lit up at the notion.
"Yep."
"I loves her too."
Xander smiled a toothy grin as Callie looked on from her bed, Arizona sitting on the edge before quickly kissing Callie and moving over to the chair where her daughter and son sat. She picked Xander up and placed him on her lap, giving him cuddles as they continued to look on at the third of the Robbins-Torres children. They quickly settled into a routine of balancing their family life with their profession life, taking turns to make sacrifices when their other half needed them to and it paid off.
Calliope Torres is a two-time Harper Avery Award winner, her first with Derek for their research on nerve conduction that allowed the wearer of an artificial limb to not only actually feel it, it also created a more realistic prosthetic for the patient. After five years they had accomplished every gaol they set out in their trial and Arizona was one of the first to sign up for one of their new limbs. In the past she had felt like Callie had only been in this trial to try to fix her but once she was the results she couldn't help but want to have one too and it even allowed her to get back into her beloved wheelie sneaks! The new technology gave her greater reflexes, more mobility and a lot less pain after a long day in the operating room.
Callie won her second Harper Avery when she created bone marrow in a lab by utilising nano technology that had only been in its infancy a few years before. It was similar to her cartilage from thin air but the bone marrow had so many more applications, rather than focusing on one joint the marrow could be used anywhere in the body where bone cancer could hide. In the past other scientists had grown marrow in a lab using stem cells but they had to grow a large supply for it to work and in some cases it had to be repeated, whereas the nano's continued to replicate the patients own stem cells and elimated the need for further surgeries until it got to the point where very few people needed bone marrow transplants. It had the added bonus of saving patients from rejection, chemotherapy and the stress of being on a waiting list for a match they may never come.
Arizona is also a Harper Avery Award winner in addition to her Carter Madison Grant. Her award was in conjunction with three-time winner Cristina Yang and two-time winner Miranda Bailey. After her first win for the printed heart conduits Cristina wanted to focus on children with congenital heart defects that ran in families with no earlier history, spurred on by her and Arizona's work with the McNeil family, a family that had all three of their previously healthy children struck down for no reason. Two years of hard work later and with the help of Bailey's genome mapping work they developed a test that could determine if your parents combined genes would put you at risk for the disease. It is now a standard test after a baby is born and sometimes it's even tested for during an amino synthesis if the parents are in the at risk categories. Arizona, Cristina and Miranda's work allowed doctors to watch those at risk much more closely and to get them on medications to head off the disease and make choices to help keep up healthy lifestyles.
With their professional lives in order they had slowed down a little over the years, Arizona turning a lot of responsibility over to Alex while Callie let Jo and Bradley handle the day-to-day running of the Ortho department, giving them the time they need for their research and most importantly, their growing family. Day's were filled with work and then the simple things. Making dinner, taking turns to pick a movie for the family to watch on the weekend or helping their brood with homework during the week. Callie and Arizona made it a point to always say 'I love you' to each other at least once a day and they never let the sun set on an argument, they had learned over the years to trust that whatever the issue was, no matter how insignificant or crazy it sounded in their head, it could and would always be talked about it. It was a simple life filled with joy and of course some loses along the way.
They had both lost their fathers within the space of the last year. Carlos passed away first and as hard as it had been for Callie to comprehend that the man who always wanted to be there to catch her when she leaped was really gone, she had her family by her side to get her through. When her mother and her sister Aria barely acknowledged Callie, Arizona and their children, it was Arizona who held her hand and wiped every tear that rolled down her face. Callie returned the favour when Daniel passed away suddenly and was laid to rest next to Timothy at Arlington National Cemetary. Callie was by Arizona's side while they sat around telling stories of a proud man who came off as a gruff control freak on the outside but was the biggest teddy bear deep down inside. A man who honored his heritage, instilled love for their country in all of his grandchildren and was the reason behind Xander wanting to join the army after he finished his medical training.
Speaking of Xander, he has now just finished his first year of medical school, studying at his Mama's alma mater Johns Hopkins, but came straight home when Sofia showed the first signs of going into labour. And being that she was alone now Barbara moved across the country and lives with Callie, Arizona and Gabby, who is the only one still at home. Even though she had just turned twenty-one and is in her last year at the Cornish College of the Arts studying for a bachelors degree in Art she wasn't planning on moving out any time soon and Callie and Arizona would never admit it out loud but they loved having one of their babies still at home.
Xander continued to pace before he stopped and looked at his moms, gazing at each other with the same look of love in their eyes he had always known. He had heard from Sofia once that a long time ago their mom's didn't live together, that something had broken them up for a time but they had never uttered a word about it. Sure they could fight and if something pissed one or both of them off they could be feisty as hell, but he never saw anything but love for each other or for himself or his sisters. They weren't perfect but they were perfect for each other and Xander had always been grateful for such loving parents and for the extended family that had always surrounded him, Sofia and Gabby.
Xander finally sat down and plucked the magazine from his sister's hands. "Hey, I was reading that."
Xander motioned across the room at their mom's and whispered conspiratorially to his baby sister. "Are we still sending Mom and Mama to Spain for their anniversary?" Xander and Gabby looked across at their moms, still staring at each other like they always did. A grey hair and a few wrinkles sneaking in here and there but they seemed to keep each other young.
"Oh yeah, but I don't know if they'll want to go after Sof has the baby. I have a feeling they won't want to be away from their grandbaby for a minute."
Xander laughed as Gabby rolled her eyes, something she inherited from Arizona even though they shared no DNA whatsoever. "I mean, you should see all the crap they've already bought. I thought Grandma was bad, but those two take the cake."
"Speaking of Grandma, where is she?"
"Oh, she went to, and I quote, 'Buy out the gift shop before our moms did', end quote."
Xander let out a deep laugh, so much like his grandpa Robbins as Callie and Arizona silently watched their children from across the room. Gabby smiled at her brother as a handsome young man turned the corner and caught her eye, a smile lighting up his face as he took a seat beside her and kissed her cheek. Gabby blushed as she greeted her suitor.
"Hey Junior."
"Hey Gabs, Xander. Has Sofia had the baby yet?"
Gabby nodded. "Nope, still taking her sweet ass time."
Junior smiled and shook hands with Xander. "So how's it feel uncle to be?"
Xander grinned. "It's gonna be awesome, I can't wait."
Xander noticed the smallest of gestures between the two young lovers and was happy his sister had found her other half. Both of his sisters had found their soul mates and he hoped the girl he had begun seeing back in Baltimore was the one for him. People always say when you find the one you know it. When she walked in the room his heart jumped into his throat and stayed there. He became a bumbling mess around her and if the looks she gave back to him where any indication she felt the same way.
As Xander, Gabby and Junior chatted away, Callie and Arizona continued to watch them from across the room.
"We did good didn't we?"
Callie kissed Arizona's hand. "We did awesome. Sofia's about to give birth to our first grandchild, all of kids are grown and making their own way in the world and I'm so happy to have Xand home for a little while. As much as I love having Gabby at home still and Sofia and Ryan are only a half hour away, I miss my little guy being around."
Arizona laughed before she sighed. "He's not so little anymore but I know what you mean. I miss him so much being all the way across the country but he's following his dreams and I couldn't be prouder of him, of all our kids."
"So am I."
Callie leaned forward and whispered an 'I love you' which Arizona returned just as Barbara came back into the room, her arms full of toys and balloons. Before they could tease her Ryan came flying around the corner, a Cheshire cat smile on his face. "It's a boy!
Callie, Arizona, Barbara, Xander, Gabby and Junior crowded around the proud new father, getting all the details about the newest member of the family and how Sofia was doing, all of them happy to hear she was exhausted but had come through just fine.
"What name did you and Sofia decide on Ryan?" Callie kissed Arizona's temple, her arm around her waist while Arizona's mirrored hers as she asked her son-in-law the question they were all dying to hear the answer to.
"Daniel Carlos Sullivan."
The Robbins-Torres family stood in silence for a moment, reflecting on the two wonderful and loving men their grandson, great-grandson and nephew were named after. Arizona felt a tear roll down her face and wasn't surprised to see her wife, mother, daughter and even son try to hide the fact they had the same reaction. As the rest of the family walked down the corridor to Sofia's room, Callie pulled Arizona back and into a deep kiss, only stopping when they ran out of air. Arizona smiled at Callie as she caught her breath.
"What was that for?"
Callie shrugged. "Just felt like it. Come on, let's meet our grandchild."
Arizona grinned as she took Callie's hand as they walked together to meet their newest family member. Their past had been littered with bombs, dropped in the midst of war, designed to inflict as much damage as possible, their relationship nearly blown to smithereens in the process. They had rebuilt the ruins with love and trust, brick by brick, opening up to each other and letting the past go and learning from the mistakes they had both made along the way. Callie had asked for a divorce right after Arizona had cheated on her because in that instant she couldn't see them with a future and she had walked away to save herself from following through on that threat, taking the time to let them both sort themselves out and fit in each others lives again. Through sheer perseverance and time they had come back to each other, working hard to communicate and not let the distance that had once divided them happen again. They were not perfect people but they were perfect for each other. Callie and Arizona had many more years to come, many more years to enjoy their lives, their family and each other and they would not waste them as the bombs that had once rained down on them fell silent forever.
Hello, I apologise for the extended delay, I had no internet for nearly two weeks and I was going stir crazy. I hope you all enjoy this finale, I tried to give everyone an ending. A huge thank you to everybody for your comments and thoughts. Till next time, Tigersforever.
