Chapter 5

How could everything turn out this way?!

Elsa was too stunned to call out for Anna, stopping her from leaving. Her heart desperately begged her body to run after the leaving princess but it was her head that stopped both legs from indulging the plea of her mind…

It was very fortunate for all palace staffs to follow Elsa's to a tee, leaving two royal sisters alone. Unfortunate souls, if any, would be frozen on the spot, literally, as the room temperature had dropped down to the point that Arendelle's most cruel winter seems like a spring breeze…

Her immoral, improper action earlier should have resulted in a hard slap to the face by Anna who was supposed to look at her with deer in the headlight look. Flushed yet the facial expression showed nothing but confusion… certainly, a trace of disgust would be apparent also.

Anna would looked at her in disbelief, if she could bear to lay eyes on her abomination of a sister at all. She would make her abrupt departure, doing her best to avoid being in a presence of an incestuous sinner.

Afterward, they would make an effort to avoid being in each other company for several months, until one of them succumb and decide to have a talk. After the talk, they would reconcile and agree that "nothing" ever happen. Elsa would brush the act off as her lapse of judgment induced by alcohol consumption, despite the fact that they both know there was no taste of wine or any other liquor on Elsa's tongue. Yes, they would find a logical explanation, no matter how weak it sounded, to the "misconduct" and continued their lives the way they were supposed to.

Then, she would conform to Anna's earlier request and decide to give Anna her blessing to marry Kristoff. She would walk Anna down the virgin road with her perfect mask on, hiding swirling storm of conflicted emotions. In spite of all the heartache she had to suffer years after years from now, watching the couple living their blissful marriage life, she would at least be content. After all, Anna would be happy. She would continue loving Anna, of course, yet she would love her from afar.

Yes, everything was supposed to turn out that way…

Anna was not supposed to smile into her kiss. Anna was not supposed to kiss back! For heaven's sake! She was not supposed to reciprocate her feeling.

She was not suppose to give her the ultimatum to choose!

"If I could be with you, I don't fucking care if I will rot in hell till the end of time!"

Leave it to Anna to have an audacity to make such a bold declaration…

Despite this utmost audacity that might result in excommunication should it ever come to the high priest's knowledge. Elsa knew that Anna did mean every word she said.

and the word "love"….

"I LOVE YOU"

She uttered it with the most precise pronunciation; there was no use fooling herself that she might have misheard the confession.

How could Anna come to love her anyway?

Dear Lord, could this be another of Anna's misguided conception of love? Elsa never forgot that how shock she was when Anna uttered the word love for… that man… after all, this still was the girl who once insisted that true love could spring in a course of a night, or rather several hours… and the girl who somehow believed a day of acquaintance should suffice as a just cause for marriage.

Anna who stated she would readily marry a man she just met, believing it was true love now proclaimed that exact word to her.

She was just confused! It must be so! Years and years of loneliness must have affected the fragile heart of Anna resulting in this misconception of love!

It MUST be so!

That vicious prince was, after all, an outsider who betrayed her love and trust in the end. This must have made Anna fear that the same thing would happen with Kristoff if she decided to bear her heart out again. It was a pure logic to stick with Elsa, her being "the safe choice". After all, the only true thing in this world is "blood"…the same blood ran through their veins, there would be no need to worry about the possibility of being betrayed nor used as a stepping stone, right?

Wait!...Was this even made sense?

What am I supposed to do?

Anna even said that bring up the topic of marriage to Kristoff was the plan…

How could it be true?

Anna would never do anything like that!

Her little innocent sister manipulated her?!

"Surprised? I'm not your little, innocent sister. Do you still want me, Elsa? Or did I just destroy your fantasy, dear sister?

Yet, all that sincerity in her eyes…

It made Elsa wonder if she really KNOW her sister after all.

Anna actually had a life! It was only Elsa who confined herself in the room years after years. Of course, there must be someone that caught her interest. Someone who was much more worthy than…this vile, twisted being.

As tempting as it was to succumb to Anna's offer of her heart on the silver plate, provided that the feeling was actually true… there were matters of politics...

There were two rivaling noble houses in Arendelle: House Bielke and House Rosenblad. Equal in prestige as well as mutual hatred for each other that went back generations, both houses has a son, each with life purpose that is to tie his own house to the royal line forever. Why would they let "a woman", the fairer sex whose designated place is to take care of the household and bear children, wear a crown? If not to marry her and become her consort?

It was their golden opportunity to finally achieve the highest status possible… Despite both of them having considerable influence in the court along with financial resource, they did not have enough "claim". They were, after all, former knights and merchants who rallied under her ancestor's banner and therefore were elevated to nobility thanks to their service. For more than two hundred years, House Arendelle had always been the rightful ruler of Arendelle. By right and by birth, only Anna and she would ever have enough legitimacy to ascend to the throne. No one can touch them as lèse-majesté laws see to that, still there were still some exceptions…

Committing a sin of most hideous nature being one of them… consorting with one's own flesh and blood, and even worse a flesh and blood of the same sex…

Were they decide to enter the physical stage of their relationship; the highest degree of discretion was required. Anna used the word "scandalized"…well, she would happy to have every single palace staff scandalized a thousand time over witnessing them in a throe of passion if only things were that simple.

Human discretion and loyalty could be counted on if it were only a handful of trustworthy servants but not a hundred of them. Promise of wealth always loosen integrity or the right kind of persuasion can make even the tightest of lips utter words…

If their illicit romance got into the wrong ears Bielke and Rosenbald would have the perfect excuse to usurp the throne, both of them would surely face the worst of fate…burn at stake, possibly? The usurpers would fight one another to gain power, and Arendelle would fall into a civil war that will take years to end.

The stake was too high.

They were born into the royal house of Arendelle. They have duties…

"Be a good girl, you always have to be"

Yet, it was her own exact words, in that moment of isolation

"Let it go, the perfect girl is gone…"

Was that girl really gone?

Still…

"Forget about both of us being females, to hell with it! I don't fucking care that we are fucking sister. Pardon my language. I know what I saw in your eyes are real. I know you want this. I want this. WE want "us".

Yes, I do want us….but I care

"I don't care what they're going to say, let the storm rage on"

Do I care?

No.

Yes?

No?

Yes or no?

To be continued.
