Alex jumped awake at the sound of someone knocking on her door. She smiled down at her sleeping lover thankful to finally see some peace across her face. Two weeks earlier the jury had come back with a verdict on Jess and had found her guilty on all accounts. She had been sentenced to sixty years in prison with the chance of parole after forty years. Since that day Olivia had become more relaxed and was sleeping better without the assistance of her medication. Her temper was under better control then it had ever been and her rehab was improving greatly on a daily basis. Alex would be the first to admit that she had thought that Dr. Mathews was lying about her not getting any further in treatment till the trial was over if she wasn't witnessing it with her own eyes.
"I'll go." Olivia mumbled not quiet awake but starting to register the sound of someone knocking at the door.
"Shh." Alex whispered as she laid a kiss on Olivia's temple "It's almost eleven and that is probably Anna so why don't you take a quick shower and I will get her settled in my office so you guys can talk."
"It could be an attacker." Olivia mumbled again reaching over Alex to retrieve her weapon from the night stand "Take it be safe."
Alex laughed as she took the weapon from Olivia leaving it on the dresser by the door on her way out.
"I'm sorry we over slept." Alex said as she opened the door and froze in her tracks.
"Did I interrupt something?" Trevor asked with a hint of laughter in his voice.
"No, I just over slept." Alex said as she pulled her robe tighter against her and cut her eyes toward the stairs hoping that Olivia would take a little longer than normal in her shower this morning.
"I remember hearing you say that 'we overslept'" Trevor stated with a smile on his face "And I'm willing to bet that the 'we' mentioned is you and a certain detective with Manhattan SVU by the name of Olivia Benson."
"What the hell do you want?" Olivia almost growled as she ran down the stairs when she realized who was at the door.
"I wanted to come by and see Alex."
"Get out." Olivia ordered as she carefully pulled Alex behind her in a protective manner.
"Liv please." Alex said as she placed a hand on her shoulder and coaxed her to move so she could step back where she was before Olivia had moved her.
"Alex."
"Don't" Alex said turning to face Olivia and smiling at her "Before Trevor started with defense we were friends. I've told you this and the last thing he would ever do is hurt me."
"You so much as upset her just a little and you will never practice law again." Olivia said stepping back to allow him room to enter "One tear that's it."
"Olivia" Alex said calmly as she placed a hand on her chest hoping to calm the detective "Will you please go and make us some coffee."
"Alex" Olivia said as she searched the blonde attorney's eyes for any sign of fear.
"It's ok" Alex whispered as she caressed the side of her face before gently kissing her on the lips. She knew that the defense attorney for her attacker was witnessing everything and honestly she didn't care. She couldn't wait to stand up and shout it to the world that she was in love with Olivia.
"So its true what Jess told me." Trevor said as he watched the detective walk into Alex's kitchen.
"Yes and no." Alex said settling in the chair as she stared at Trevor "Why are you here? Are you trying to find new evidence to request a new trial?"
"No I'm not." Trevor stated as he leaned back on the couch "I'm thankful they came back with a guilty verdict and gave her the max."
"Trevor you were her attorney."
"I know and I have given her the best representation that I could without asking her questions that I know she would be openly lying to."
"Trevor?" Alex asked confused at what she was hearing coming from him.
"Alex I didn't want to represent her but it was my firm's turn for pro bono work and it was also my turn to be the pro bono lawyer. When I found out who the defendant was I tried to drop the client and pass her on to someone else but I was told if I did that I could kiss my job good bye. So I had no choice but to defend her."
"You could have said no." Alex pointed out.
"Then I would have lost my job and my nice salary to boot."
"I would hate for you to lose that." Alex stated as she looked away "Law was always about the money for you."
"Alex I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth like you were. Your college tuition was covered before you were ever conceived. Thanks to the market crash in the early eighties my parents lost my tuition and for me to attend Harvard I racked up over a hundred thousand in college loans."
"Why didn't you come to me?" Alex asked as she stood and went to sit by him "Why didn't your sister ever say anything?"
"Because she was afraid that if she told you that we didn't have the type of money that you had you would leave her. You were her first love and she was terrified of losing you."
"I have never been concerned with money and appearances the way my father was you knew that and she knew that."
"Yeah but come on she was dating a Cabot she didn't want to harm you or your dreams of reaching the governor's office. She knew she was already damaging them by being a woman and being with you but she loved you. The last thing she wanted was for it to come out that you were dating a poor woman, whose family insisted on keeping up appearances. I could see the papers now."
"I would have proudly stood at the podium holding her hand, telling everyone that I love her for her and she loves me for me. If they couldn't handle that or support me then so be it."
"I know that and she did to which is why she left you. She didn't want you to have to ruin any future you had because of her so she walked away wishing you the best."
"I always figured there was more to the story than what she gave me that night." Alex said as she choked back tears "How is she?"
"She is doing wonderful." Trevor said with a smile crossing his face once again "She has met and married a wonderful woman and they now have two beautiful children."
"Now that this is over we are all going to have to meet up for dinner? I would love to meet her wife and children?"
'Whose wife and children?" Olivia asked as she walked back into the living room carrying a tray with three coffee cups.
"Trevor's sister" Alex said taking the coffee from Olivia allowing her fingers to caress her hand before pulling back.
"Isn't she your first girlfriend?"
"Not my first girlfriend but I would have to say my first love." Alex answered as she reached out and took Olivia's hand stopping her from retreating upon hearing Alex's admission "She would love you and I can't wait for her to meet you."
"Actually you better thank god she's already married Lex because she would steal Olivia here right out from under you."
"Not a chance." Alex said smiling as her eyes connected with Olivia's "I'm not giving this one up for anything."
Olivia's eyes went wide with what Alex said as she glanced between her and Trevor.
"Relax Olivia" Trevor said laughing "You two can deny it all you want but it is more than obvious to anyone who knows you that you two love each other. You don't have to worry about me spilling the beans. I won't tell a soul I swear to you but I do want to be the first to congratulate you."
"Thank you" Olivia said unable to hide the shock from her face.
"I'm not the evil man you all think I am." Trevor said standing "I have my reasons for the career path I have chosen and believe me I wouldn't have defended the woman who hurt Alex if I could have avoided it. I grew up with her and love her like a sister and truthfully would have loved to see that bitch fry. But I took an oath that I up hold the same as Alex so I defended her to the best of my ability. I'm sorry."
"Don't be Trevor" Alex said standing and pulling him in for a hug "You had a job to do and did it to the best of your ability. You know I would have been upset if you didn't."
"I know" Trevor answered as he pulled away "I want to catch up with you more. I miss talking with you Lex."
"I do to Trevor, now that the trial is over, you need to invite Sarah and her wife down and we'll spend a night catching up."
"It's a date" Trevor said as there was knocking on the door.
"That would be Olivia's appointment." Alex said as she guided Trevor to the door "If you ever need anything, anything at all let me know, please."
"I promise" Trevor said as he looked around Alex to Olivia "You have a good one here detective, take good care of her."
"Consider it done." Olivia said as watched Trevor walk out the door.
A/N: Never saw that twist coming did you. You know I love to keep you guys on your toes. Now a little bit of knowledge I had written this chapter about five or so chapters back but then started adding chapters in between and I just went back to adjust it as needed. I figured that the story had hit a point to where I could post this chapter and it would be fitting.
