Jay's POV
2 days later
"Land ahoy!" Sam called out to us. I rushed up to see an empty looking harbor. We docked the boat and heard nothing. "This is weird I don't see any infected anyway. Do you guys think it's safe?"
"Maybe, I have an idea." Frank quickly looked at Dawn. "Let the witch go and check it out." I would have said something but that wasn't a bad idea. It's true that infected can somehow tell the difference between each other and humans, plus the witch is the top dog of them all so they won't attack us while were together.
"As much as I hate to agree with the resident jackass, he has a point Dawn you are the only one who can do this safely." I said. She smiled and nodded. And with that she was off like a bat out of hell, claw at the ready as she checked nearby buildings and alleyways for a few minutes then came back. "So are there any infected nearby." She shook her head.
"Good maybe we'll be able to make to the rescue point. So where do we go now Sam?" Jacky questioned.
"Northwest, there should be a lodging cabin where the radio is, it should take a two day walk so let's get to a safe house for now." We all nodded and grabbed our gear before moving on.
"I don't like this it's too quiet where are they at?" Frank said as I noticed the sudden decrease in infected. Not seeing any special infected is one thing but the common ones should be everywhere. "Ok people stay sharp and don't separate no matter what." Even though he can be an asshole to me and Dawn at times, I got to say Frank does seem to know what he's doing, protecting this group must be more important to him than I thought. "Hey Sam how much longer till-?"
RAAAAAWWWWWWR
Before we knew it there was a horde closing in on us fast from both the front and back. "RUN!" I shouted but they didn't need me to tell them. We all ran down a street towards the woods shooting infected that followed. I watched as Dawn was a few paces ahead shredding zombies like a tornado vs. a paper airplane. As we continued our escape, the infected seemed to slow down as we pressed on deeper into the forest. Eventually there weren't any more zombies after us and none in front. "Is everyone ok?" I looked at everyone; nobody looked hurt, just some heavy breathing. "We should rest here for a bit. How much longer till the safe house Sam?
"Just a bit farther ahead out of the woods. It should be a house."
I looked over at Dawn, with her back to me; she was doing something with her hands. I walked over to her and saw her rubbing her claws. 'Is she trying to get the blood off her hands?' I reached into my backpack and pulled out a rag and a bottle of water.
"Hey Dawn, I'm going to wash that nasty stuff off your hands for you ok." She nodded as I wet the rag. Being very careful not to cut myself on her claws, I got them back to their original pale grey color. "All done, now does that feel so much better." I said with a half smile as she looked at her claws as if they were brand new, then looked at me with a shiny in her eyes that I would have gotten lost in those ocean blue eyes if I wasn't careful. It wasn't till Frank made a sound of disgust that we noticed we had an audience.
"Do you two need to be alone for a second?" Jacky teased. Alice even pointed out the fact that we both were blushing. Wait Dawn is blushing. This was getting to strange. Dawn's eyes are blue and not red, she travels with humans and not kills or eats them, and now she is show more emotions other than rage, fear, and sorrow. Like embarrassment and joy, I wonder if she is turn back human or if she is gaining her humanity back? Oh well I can figure this out when we get to the safe house.
"Look let's just get to the safe house ok." I said trying to hide my blush as I grabbed my gear. The rest of the trip I couldn't stop thinking about earlier. What was happening to Dawn? My train of thought was cut short when I noticed Alice was next to me.
"Oh hey Alice what's up?"
"Nothing" she said with the kind of tone and smirk that made me think of the troll face. "Just wondering if you two would get married." Times like this I'm glad I'm not eating anything or I might have started choking.
"WH-what are you talking about?!" I stuttered trying to stay quiet so the others didn't hear us.
"You and Dawn dummy. It's obvious that she likes you and I know you care for her to. So why do you marry her?"
"It's not that simple Alice. Plus I think we should focus on getting to the next safe house, not worrying about my love life." As our group pressed onward we came upon a group of common infected.
"Alice came here!" Sam shouted as she obeyed.
"There's only a few but I think the witch could take them out quietly and easily. We don't want to start shooting and draw a horde" Frank stated. I wasn't sure why he would suggest Dawn do it but he did have a point.
"Dawn you don't have to do it if you don't want to." I pleaded but I could see that she was alright with the idea. And just like that she was off, moving swiftly to her unsuspecting prey. They stood no chance as she tore her claw through their flesh. I was so absorbed by the display of both grace and death that I did hear the Boomer coming from behind us. Now I've been barfed on three times in my life. The first was in preschool when one kid ate way too many peaches and oranges fruit cups. The second was at the age of 16 at a carnival with friends when one douche friend of mine mistook me for a trash can after riding a roller coaster and tilt-a-whirl four times back to back. And the last time was curtsey of a Boomer a month after the infection started and I only survived that because it started to rain. I was can now say I was saved but a hobo's shower, but now no such luck.
"HUUUUUAAArrrrrrrrrrh" (best vomit sound I could come up with) and just like that we were all covered in Boomer bile
"Shit" Frank recovered first and shot the boomer in the head. Bad idea when you consider the splash from the leftover puke in its stomach hitting us for a second coating.
"Dammit Frank warn us next time an infected gets that close" Sam yelled as he started wiping the bile off myself and Alice. Before Jacky and I started to clean ourselves off we all froze when we heard multiple screams from the nearby infected.
"Well shit. We got to move now!" Frank shouts as he starts to run with the others following behind.
I turn to see Dawn stand a few feet away, but she looks odd. "Dawn come on let's go!" She looks at me and she looks like she is struggling with something. "Dawn are you ok." I walked up to her to see if see was hurt at all. "We got to move now Dawn that horde will be here soon." But she didn't move nor did look injured.
"Jay what hell are you doing come on we got to move NOW!" I hear Jacky and Sam call for but I wasn't going to move not without Dawn.
