Prompt/Inspiration; A line I couldn't help but think of when I watched that heartbreaking finale.

"I'm going to be at your side. Like I always am, protecting you."

Merlin's own voice, from back when Destiny seemed fragile and Arthur's golden reign was just a dream, came floating back to his mind as clear and sure as the day he'd said it.

"Well old friend" The Warlock whispered to the mist that had slowly covered the lake once Arthur was gone from his sight. "Not this time, I suppose."

No smile quirked his once-joyful features, now tracked in rivers through dust. Kaleidoscope eyes lifted, resting once more on the Lake, before he turned in a stiff motion to head back to Camelot. To the kingdom he knew Arthur wouldn't have wanted him to abandon, not now when she had just lost her king.

No, he couldn't follow Arthur this time. Couldn't stay at his side.

But that was alright. Because when Arthur rose again, Merlin would be right there waiting for him.

He was going to be at his Kings side one day, where he was always meant to be. Protecting him, and the dream of Albion they had fought for together.

The Immortal swore to never fail his brother again.
