Chapter 12 Her brother was a drug addict too/ I can not believe it took me so long to tell you this Cody but I love/ Our 27 birthday...
After two days of being in the hospital, Zack was still recovering on the hospital for what happen at the baby shower.
"You have an high blood pressure..." The Doctor said to Zack and he nod an okay and the Doctor walk away and Zack started to sweat. London was next to the to him on a chair and Zack started complaining "Honey I can't breath very well please call the nurse" he said and pass away on the chair. London tried to not panic and run in look for a nurse.
Minutes later...(Zack POV)
I laid tensely in the hospital bed as the nurse finished checking my heart. Her green eyes were narrowed in concentration, making me feel even more nervous. Even though I had been taking the medicine the doctor gave me for a couple of days, I could still feel my body weakening from the cancer.
After a few minutes she finally met my gaze. "Everything is doing just fine for now. Your body is taking the medicine well and controlling the cancer. You should be proud of him." I gave her a weird look because of her comment. Then I saw London enter the room.
I thanked the nurse quietly as she left the room. London stood beside me, her hand running down my back. I felt shivers down my spine just from her touch. "How you feel babe?" She asked worried, he touch her hair and said with a smile "Better now " She smiled back and asked "I'm going to the cafeteria. Do you want something to eat?"
I smiled at my wife. "Thanks, but I don't feel like eating right now."
She nodded in understanding. "Well, if you need something let me know. You need to eat something soon." Her face turned stern. I chuckled. My wife sure knew how to take care of me. Then London turned to Cody. "Did you want something?"
Cody looked at me, then back at London. "No, I"m okay, thanks. Go keep Bailey company. She must be feeling lonely."
London raised her eyebrow. "Throwing me out of the room, are you? I see how it is. Take care of my man." Then she left the room.
Cody sat down on the vacant chair beside my bed. I looked at my twin. For a while we just stare at each other silently, each of us lost in our own thoughts. Finally I broke the silence between us.
"Remember when we broke Mom's favorite lamp when we were five years old?"
Cody's blue eyes lit up. He chuckled. I noticed that his laugh was a little strained. After all that had been going on, I wasn't surprised. "Yeah. You and I kept switching names and got her all confused. That was probably the only time we broke something and didn't get punished for it."
I chucked too. "Yeah."
We spent the next few minutes reminiscing other fond memories when we were kids. Things seemed so much simpler then. I wished with all my heart that I was that age again where the only thing I needed to worry about was getting in trouble with Mom. I swallowed hard. I had to tell Cody how much London meant to me. He had to know everything that she had done for me in my darkest moments. Most importantly, I wanted him to know being with her eases my worries. My stomach churned as I felt the sickness hit me again. I cleared my throat and looked at Cody seriously.
"Cody, Things have been rough for me since the last time we saw each other. Even before I got sick I had struggled with my darkest demons. I've been beaten down, kicked around and done things that I shouldn't have. But she takes it all for me. When I was in my darkest days she was there to make me believe in myself again." I didn't have to say who I was talking about. Cody already knew. By the look on my twin's face I could tell that he wanted to know more. I swallowed hard then continued. He had to know how much my wife meant to me. "I've spent the years doing what I wanted and made some bad decisions. They were all in vain and very selfish. London waited patiently before and does right now. She pulls me on my feet when I'm down. When the world slows down, and the stars burn out, she makes me want to believe. She's always been there for me, and always will.
"Cody, she has scars just like me. She hides them by having stars in her eyes. But every time I look at her I see the echos of my past. We're both the same. She's sick of this town, and the rain that falls down from her past. But she swore to herself to never let her heart-break again. So she hides behind her pride. That's why she's so determined to help me-because she's been through all this before."
"What do you mean?"
"Her brother was also a drug addict, just like I used to be, and just like so many other people in this world. She has gone through hardships just like I had. Her mother and father divorced and were never there for her. She was left alone with her drug addicted brother. He died from an overdose right in front of her." I wiped my tears away. "She was just a little girl at the time. She's hidden this in her heart all this time. Because of this she's helped me get through this and has been strong for me. Never once has she complained." I take a deep breath. "She is the one I love with all my heart. She is my strong woman."
I looked at Cody with watery eyes. "I want you to make sure that she will stay strong and get through my death. I want you to make sure that she leaves this town and goes to a place where the sun is the brightest. That's her dream, and I want you to make sure that she lives that dream." I coughed violently. I wiped my bloody hand on the hospital bedspreads.
"I promise, Zack. I will be there to make sure that she's okay and to help her achieve her dream." I could tell that my younger brother was trying to hold back tears. I squeezed his shoulder in gratitude.
"Cody, I know that this is difficult, but you have to know that I have no chance in surviving this cancer. I want you to know that I've never been happier, because you are here with me." I chuckled softly. "I never pictured you by my side after all that I've done."
My grip on Cody's shoulder tightened. I continued to look into his identical green eyes. "I will be gone in just a few days. I can feel it deep in my heart." I lowered my gaze. "I just pray with all my heart that God will help me survive long enough to see my baby, my son's face." Then I met his gaze again. "But if I die before London goes into labor, please be with them. Tell them that I love them and will watch over them. Look for the letter I have in my nightstand. It's in a black box. I don't want her to read it, but if you could read it to her in one of your poetry readings, I'd really appreciate it. Tell her it's from me."
Tears started falling from my eyes. Cody's eyes followed suit. "Tell them that I had a great life and that even though I died, I died happy. I died happy because they were there to keep me from falling apart. Tell my son to not be stupid like I was when I was younger. Tell him to be smart and make smart choices. Let him know how much I love him. Make sure he knows everything about me-the good and the bad." I coughed violently again. I tried to stop the tears from falling, but I couldn't. It was time to tell Cody something that I had waited to tell him for years.
"I can't believe it took me this long to tell you this, but I love you, little brother. I love you with all my heart. You have always been one of the most important people in my life. Don't forget how much you mean to me. Thank you for being here for me when I needed you the most."
I wrapped my arms around my twin and hugged him tightly. Cody's grip was just as strong. I could feel tears on my shoulder. Obviously my twin is still crying. He's not the only one. We stay that way for a few minutes. I tried to engrave this moment in my mind forever. It was one of the things I wanted to think about before I left this world. We pulled away.
Cody wiped his eyes. "We're almost 27, and yet you still manage to make me cry, Zack. I promise that I will do everything you asked me. It will be an honor to read your letter to London. But I beg of you to stop saying all this right now. You are not dead. You are still alive with us and that's all that matters now.
Don't think about the future, or the past for that matter. Just keep looking at the present. Look at me, your wife, our friends and family, and watch them smile. They are positive that you can get through this. Zack, can you be as positive as them?"
Another tear fell down my face. I grabbed Cody for another bone crushing hug. "I can, Thanks little bro"
We pull away when London enters the room, holding her enormous belly. I coughed, but ignored it the best I could. I smiled at my wife. "That little guy is going to be a big one," I said with a smile.
She giggled. "Yeah you know he's going to be tall just like you." She gave me a tender kiss then sat on my lap.
I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her forehead. "I can't wait to see him in just one month."
"Yep only one month left. I can't believe how fast time is going." She lays her head on my shoulder. She smiled at me, but I could tell that she was sad on the inside. A tear fell down her cheek. "I wish that I could stop time and stay with you like this forever."
I kiss her briefly. My stomach churned again. I was going to be sick again. London looked me in the eyes and knew exactly what was going to happen. Together, she and Cody helped me off the bed and led me to the bathroom.
It felt like I was in the bathroom forever. I was throwing up more than I usual did, and this time all I was throwing up was blood. I coughed violently. I started to sob. I couldn't help it. I was so scared.
"I'll get the doctor," Cody said in a worried voice. He left the bathroom.
London patted my back. "Well, we're just about the same now, since we both are always pucking ." I knew she was trying to lighten the strained atmosphere with a joke.
"Yeah" I tried to smile but I threw up again. I felt so empty inside and my throat was hurting from all the vomiting. My stomach felt as though it was on fire. The world started to spin. I was about to pass out again. A blurry Dr. West came into the room. I tried to stand up, but ended up falling into his arms. The last words I heard were my wife's.
"You're going to be okay. The doctor is here."
Then everything went black.
I wake up again to find my wife sleeping next to me on the hospital bed. I felt relieved that I had survived another day. I looked at the clock. 9PM. I noticed that London had a hospital bracelet on too. Her eyes fluttered halfway open. She kissed my cheek sleepily. "You're getting better. You will be cured. You will be with me."
"Always," I said in a low voice. Then we fell back asleep.
"Zack, wake up."
I opened my eyes to see Dr. West standing over us. This time it was 7 AM. He shook my wife's shoulder gently. "Miss London."
"Yeah?" London said sleepily.
"Are you feeling any better?" He asked London.
My wife looked more awake now. "Yes, but what about Zack? You never gave us the results from the test you took when he passed out." London gripped on my Ived hand.
The doctor looked at her seriously. "I do have the results, but something went wrong with Zack's analysis." London and I stared at the doctor. He was staring to look a lot older than 35 years old. "First of all, don't stress yourself out. It's bad for the baby. You could go into labor before you're supposed to."
I turned to my wife. "Is that why you have the hospital bracelet? Are you having contractions?"
London runs a hand through my blonde hair. "Yeah, but that is normal for now, I mean I only have one month to go. I'm okay honey. Don't worry" She smiles at me. "Go on Doctor."
Dr. West sighed wearily. "I unfortunately have bad news for your husband. The cancer is far more advanced than we feared. He only has five days to a week left if he keeps using the medicine. We are doing all we can to prolong the inevitable, but his body is more weaker than it looks. I'm truly sorry. I promise that we will do whatever we can to keep him comfortable."
I looked at my hands. London, however sat up straight in bed. "That could not be possible! My husband is not leaving me in just five days, Doctor! Your results have to be wrong. Check them again. NOW!" Before she could say another word to him, London got off the hospital bed and ran out of the room without even looking at me.
Tears fell from my eyes. I really needed London right now, but I knew why she was acting like this. I knew that she didn't really believe that I was going to be leaving her side in a couple of days. The doctor gave me a grave look. "I'm really sorry, but there is nothing else we can do for you. Be with your family as much as you can." Then he left the room.
(narrator)
London ran out of the hospital as fast as she could. She sat on the steps and began to sob. "The doctor is wrong," she said out loud. "IF YOU WERE A DOCTOR, YOU WOULD TELL THE FU***ING TRUTH!"
As she began to calm down, she started to remember what Zack had told her why he had gotten into drugs and alcohol in the first place. It all started when his last girlfriend, Maya cheated on him. She never loved him. Zack had told London that he didn't love Maya- he thought that for the first time someone loved him. When Maya broke Zack's heart, he started taking drugs in hopes to ease the pain. London squeezed her eyes shut tight as she remembered Zack telling her about being caught at club by Mr. Moseby. Mr. Moseby was so angry, he called Cody to get his brother.
The thing that London remembered the most from Zack's story was when Cody asked Zack why he slept with five women at the club.
"Why are you doing this?" Cody had asked.
"Because nobody loves me."
Then London began to remember when she and Zack were at the hotel and Zack told her about his past, how many women he slept with that night. Zack trusted her to tell the truth of how he never felt loved.
Flash Back
"Zack, I know that you think that you never felt loved, but it's not true. You've always been loved" London said.
"By who?" Zack asked in a low voice. "My mother?" he look at her with a face.
She shook her head. "People love you, but you never let them. You never see the people who love you... Like me." She sat on the bed.
"Y-you love me," Zack ashed in shock. "But you hated me-you ignored me every time I wanted to talk to you alone." he said now looking at her in the eyes.
"Because you were always smoking and high, Zack." She confess but then she got nervous and said "And I only love you like a friend, Zack. Nothing more."
Zack raised his eyebrow. London blushed. "Well, I don't believe you" he said while getting closer to her on the bed. "So why are you really here?"
"I told you, because I care about you. And the cops find us and I have to move with you in this lame Hotel" Her words only seemed to upset him more. "You only care about me?" London stared at him "Why are you getting so upset now?"
"Because I was just getting excited, happy, and feeling weird and somewhat confused." Zack looked at his hands. "Because I'm falling for you." He got off the bed and hurried to the window. He stared blankly at the cars zooming down the street. "And now you're using me like Maya."
"That's why you are confused, Zack?" He didn't look at her. "You think I would fool you like Maya did? Well do you know what I think? I think Maya lost such a wonderful man. She didn't take the time to see the real you. Because what I see right now is a man staring out the window and asking himself if love exists. Well, let me tell you something."
Zack didn't let her finish her sentence. He took her in his arms and kissed her passionately. He held her tightly as the kiss deepened. After a few minutes, they pulled away, their faces just inches apart. "Love does exist" they said at the same time.
London looked into Zack's green eyes, her arms still around his neck. "I lied about something." Zack took a step back. "What?"
"I don't love you just like a friend. I love you more than a friend," she said with a smile.
Zack slowly walked back towards her. "I think the strange and happy feeling I'm getting is because I finally found the woman of my life." He kissed her again, this one more passionate than the kiss before. "I love you."
They sat on the bed. "How long had you been hiding this?"
London stroked his cheek gently. "I had a crush on you since we were on the S.S. Tipton. I fell in love with you when you said you would change for me. And you?"
"To be honest, I had a crush on you since the Tipton hotel, but you didn't see me. You looked at me like I was a little kid. So I pretended to crush on Maddie to save myself from getting rejected by you. Then on the ship I tried to focus on other girls because I thought you would never would go for someone low-class like me. I fell back in love with you when you said you were going to help me. You saved my life and I fell so hard for you. I was too scared to tell you. Until now. I know what I feel is real."
Zack kissed London's forehead. "I want you forever and always. Through the good and the bad. We'll grow old together. Forever and always."
Present
London began to cry, remembering everything about their first kiss. It was just so hard to believe that her husband was going to pass away in just days. Reality hit her fast. "I left him alone." Unsteadily she got to her feet. She swore to him that she would never leave him alone. This was the moment he really needed her the most. London wiped the tears off her face and began to run back into the hospital.
When she reached his hospital room, she found Zack sitting up in bed, his two hands covering his face. His shoulders shook as he cried in silence. London ran over to his bedside. "I'm so sorry, Zack. I don't know what's wrong with me...I just...please forgive me."
He looked at her and kissed her just as passionately as when they first kissed. The more he kissed her, the more she seemed to calm down. "It's okay, London. It's okay," He said in a low voice.
London gave him a loving look. "You never lost that special way of kissing me, Zack."
"I will always be me," Zack said with a smile.
London laid against Zack and they began to dream about the life they were going to have: They talked about the kids they were going to have and the house on the hillside where they would stay forever and always.
"London, you so wonderful. I could not ask for more. I want you to know that I love you, forever and always. Please just remember that even if I'm not here, I'll always love you."
London hugged him tightly. "I still remember what you told me during our first kiss, Zack. That's the thing I will never forget. I love you with all my heart, forever and always."
Midnight hit the hospital a few hours later. It was Zack's 27th birthday. The hospital arranged to throw a party in the cafeteria. Zack didn't know anything about it until when he showed up with London to get something to eat. Though now he understood why he was in a tux and London was wearing a beautiful light purple dress. In the cafeteria were other kids who had cancer, and Cody and Bailey.
"Happy birthday, Zack!" Everyone shouted when he entered.
London squeezed his arm. "Happy birthday, my love," she said sweetly.
Zack smiled. For once he was able to forget the pain from the cancer. Instead for the first time he could relax and be with people who truly cared about him. "Thanks everybody for doing this."
Cody and Bailey approached them to congratulate him once more. Zack gave them both a tight hug.
Zack had the best night of his life. He ate cake and talked with the other kids and London, Cody, and Bailey. For the first time in a while he had the strength to laugh with the other kids and joke around. He had a video chat with his parents. Then once he got off the call with his father, the lights in the cafeteria began to dim. Dream by Priscilla Ahn appeared on the sound speakers.
Zack turned to his wife and extended his hand. "May I?"
London smiled. "I fall in love with you more and more each time I see you, Zack," she said.
Zack led London to the middle of the dance floor. He wrapped his arm around her waist, the other clutching her hand. Then slowly they began to dance to the rhythm of the romantic song.
I was a little girl alone in my little world who dreamed of a little home for me. I played pretend between the trees, and fed my house guests bark and leaves, and laughed in my pretty bed of green.
Zack twirled London around, making her purple dress sway dramatically. He dipped her, then pulled her back into his arms. Looking each other with loving eyes, with a sweet smile.
I had a dream That I could fly from the highest swing. I had a dream.
Long walks in the dark through woods grown behind the park, I asked God who I'm supposed to be. The stars smiled down on me, God answered in silent reverie. I said a prayer and fell asleep.
Zack laid his head on her shoulder as they continued to dance.
I had a dream That I could fly from the highest tree. I had a dream.
Now I'm old and feeling grey. I don't know what's left to say about this life I'm willing to leave. I lived it full and I lived it well, there's many tales I've lived to tell. I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready now to fly from the highest wing.
"I had a dream," Zack sang softly in London's ear.
She smiled. "A dream that has come true just to see you smile."
Zack and London leaned in and kissed. They were in their own little world, just like the day they got married. Zack ignored all his fears about dying. All that mattered was he was holding the woman he loved in his arms and was kissing her. "Forever and always is like this," he said to her, smiling. "Think about it."
Applause erupted on the dance floor, but Zack barely noticed. The world was starting to spin. He felt like he was going to pass out again. The nurses immediately came to the dance floor and injected him with medicine. Feeling better almost instantly, Zack swept London away. They spent the night kissing as if it was their last night together. Cody watched them with Bailey the whole night. "How could God tear apart two people who were so in love?" Cody asked. Bailey look at him and said "This is not fault of God Cody. God is love"
In Zack's hospital room.
"We can't Zack" London said as he laid next to her on the bed. "I know" Zack said quietly. "That's why I stopped." He coughed violently. "It's just you make me feel stronger and fearless" he said looking at her.
"You make me feel the same way" She smile and look out the window.
"Look at the stars" Zack said as he clutched onto her hand. "They shine just like you."
London blushed. "You are so charming with me sometimes" She could not stop smiling. "And I know we can't do it again together. But Instead we can watch the stars smile at us and think about their beauty."
"And contemplate the baby inside of you " Zack said; his hand gently landing on her belly. He was so grateful of breathing that he had forgotten why he was in the hospital in the first place. At that moment, the cancer didn't seem to matter.
This day is for you to be happy. Think about it all the days for the rest of your life. He said in his mind. Then after struggling to keep his eyes open, Zack fell asleep next to his wife on the hospital bed.
Suddenly one day later...
Zack was taking a shower. He closed his eyes as the warm water rolled down his body. It felt great to be home from the hospital. He'd rather spend his last days at home than stuck in some hospital bed. For the first time in a while, he felt great. The pain that usually plagued him every day was gone, and he hadn't puked all morning. Maybe he'd have a great day after all.
The great feeling inside didn't last long. Suddenly his lungs started to flare in agonizing pain. He started to cough violently, thick red blood splattering all over the shower floor. Along with the coughing, came a terrible headache-the worst one he's ever had. The pain was starting to get so bad that it was hard to stay upright. He had to get help and fast.
Zack reached for the towel on the rack. All the strength ran out and he hit the ground hard.
SLAM!
London was in the kitchen cleaning up after breakfast when she heard a loud SLAM. Her heart dropped. She knew it was Zack. Dropping the plate in her hand, she ran down the hall and into the bathroom. She gasped in horror. Zack was lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. Water was running down his n*** body. "Oh my God, Zack! Cody! Cody! Call an ambulance quick!" she called to his twin who was staying in their guest bedroom.
While Cody was calling an ambulance, London turned off the water that was still running and covered Zack's n*** body with a towel. Carefully London pulled Zack into her arms. His face was so pale that she started sobbing. She cradled him close to her and rubbed his blonde hair. "Everything's going to be okay, Zack..." she kissed his forehead lovingly.
"The ambulance is here," Cody said, entering the room. His face immediately paled seeing his twin unconscious on the floor. He noticed blood running down his face from a head wound. "He's bleeding pretty bad. We need to get him to the ambulance now!" His was shaking just as hard as London.
Carefully Cody pulled Zack out of London's embrace. Because of the cancer, Zack was easy to carry. Then he took his older brother to the ambulance.
London glanced at her hands. They were covered in blood. "Oh God, why?" She scrambled to her feet and hurriedly followed Cody out of the house. When she reached the door she saw Cody desperately trying to get in the ambulance too.
"You have to let me go with him. He's my twin brother." Cody said almost hysterically.
After a moment, the paramedic nodded. Cody climbed into the ambulance after Zack. Then the ambulance doors slammed shut and they took off, the siren roaring loudly.
London hurried back into the house to grab her car keys. As she drove to the hospital she prayed over and over. "Please God. Help him survive."
The ambulance was going so fast Cody was sure that they were speeding. He held Zack's hand tightly. He could tell that Zack was getting worse. He hoped that they would reach the hospital as soon as possible. "Everything's going to be okay, Zack," Cody said over and over. He knew Zack wouldn't be able to hear him, because the sirens were so loud, but he had to keep trying. "Just hold back the pain. We're almost at the hospital."
Before he could stop himself, he buried his head into his arms, and began to sob. His hand never left his twin's. He never wanted to let go.
