Chapter 20: Hunger Games Exciting Moments

Caesar Flickerman and Claudius Templesmith in the TV studio, several hours earlier:

"Well, ladies and gentlemen." said Caesar. "The Gamemakers have been planning this for days, and now it is about to happen. Four of the highest scoring tributes are going to engage in a battle against multiple warrior Muttations on an alien planet. The battle that is about to happen is a fierce, brutal, exciting fight that we have NEVER... seen on the Hunger Games before! And I can promise you all...we will never see...EVER again. Are you EXCITED!"

There was a roar and applause from the audience in the TV studio.

"Call me naive or a poor memory Caesar," said Claudius, "but I think you are right, because personally I cannot remember another moment in any Hunger Games where such an epic fight has ever taken place."

"Well, perhaps we should take a little time to count them up." said Caesar. "Let's look at some clips."

They looked to the screen that was directly behind them, and obviously in the editing room the editor hit several buttons on his computer console that brought up old video files from previous Hunger Games.

- In the 65th Games. Finnick Odair from District 4, already so strong and fast for age 14, but after he received a Trident as a gift he took on the four tributes from Districts 1 and 2 by himself in a very fierce battle.

"I remember that year well. That fight was legend!" said Claudius excitedly.

- Nine years later in the 74th Games. Cato from District 2 and Thresh from District 11.

It showed on the screen, video footage of a large field of grass. Cato from District 2 was walking along a path through the grass when he jumped to the side, sensing an attack. He had been ambushed by the heavily muscled, 6 and a half foot, 18-year-old boy from District 11. Cato tried to swing his sword at Thresh, but Thresh dodged and then threw a punch right into Cato's face. Cato went down. Thresh was about to land on top of Cato when Cato rolled to the side. A few moments later Thresh managed to disarm Cato and then they fought without weapons, it was like a boxing match of hard punches to each other's faces for the 'Heavyweight Champion of the World'. They threw karate chops and kicks at each other, both were bleeding severely, they wrestled, rolling all over the ground through the grass, locked hand to hand. Thresh had been wearing a suit of armor to protect his body that he'd gotten from the cornucopia, that had been intended as something from the Gamemakers that Cato desperately needed. Thresh manage get a firm hold around Cato's neck from behind with both arms, and squeezed with all his might. Cato was on the verge of suffocating when he managed to pull off one last trick that he had learned at the special Academy for Hunger Games Tributes in District 2. He flipped backwards and over, breaking Thresh's hold, twisting Thresh's arm around and gave him one last hard elbow to the face. He then felt his sword on the ground under his boot, he quickly picked it up and before Thresh could get up, Thresh felt the blade of the sword right through his face. The cannon sounded. And Cato took Thresh's stuff. The cost of winning a fight against Thresh was great; even though Cato had won the fight, he was severely wounded. The video clip ended.

"Oh yes," said Caesar, "the famous 74th Games. That was a particularly epic year. Which, at present, every single person in the entire country has, FOREVER, had burned into their minds. And even after we are all gone, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will learn about that year in history class."

"I believe you are correct Caesar." said Claudius.

They showed other clips of other fights:

- The fight of Finnick Odair, Katniss Everdeen, and Peeta Mellark with the carnivorous monkeys in the 75th Games.

- The boy from District 5 against three girls from District 12, 11, and 9, in The 9th Games.

- The girl from District 4 against the boy from District 2 in the 12th Games. That was the year old Mags had won.

- The District 7 girl against the District 4 girl in the 1st Quarter Quell. All 24 Tributes that year were 18 years old, and strong, as each District had to choose who to send without the Reaping Bowls, they all of course sent, after evaluation, only the ones they felt had the best chance of winning.

- The District 10 boy against the District 4 boy in the 34th Games.

- Haymich Abernathy in the second Quarter Quell taking on three Careers by himself, and then the fight between him and the District 1 girl at the end.

- Joanna Mason killing the entire Career pack by herself, one at a time, with an axe, in the 71st Games.

There were about another 30 or so clips from different moments, of different exciting fights, in different years.

"And now ladies and gentlemen!" said Caesar, emphasizing the excitement of what was about to happen. "Four, fully armed, high scoring, Capitol raised Tributes, against dozens of warrior-like laboratory grown monsters! LET THE GAMES BEGIN!"

And the crowd went wild!
