Chapter 23 - A Purple Birthday

I packed what I had made last night in a nifty gift box and brought it to school. Murasakibara waited for me at the gates. He insisted of walking to school today with me. I wouldn't mind at all since it's his birthday. As I got down, I saw Mura-kun standing. I went up to him and gave him a hug.

"Happy birthday, Atsushi."

"Thanks."

Murasakibara held my hands and we walked to school. He hasn't munched on anything, which is rather strange. Instead, his hands were always on mine throughout the journey. It was only once we reached school grounds that he released my hand. Murasakibara then reached out for candies inside his bag and started eating in class.

Classes were held as always. By lunchtime, I felt lifeless. Murasakibara approached me and asked, "Do you want to eat lunch together?" I nodded. I am always happy whenever he invites me for lunch. We both went to the rooftop. There were a lot of students having their lunches but luckily, there was a spot for both of us to sit. Murasakibara sat beside me and lay his head onto my shoulders. I looked at him and he looked back.

"Urm, Atsushi, aren't you going to eat lunch? Did you bring your bento?"

"Hmmm….." Murasakibara stared at me before saying, "I didn't bring any."

I was slightly surprised by his reply. I then offer to share him my bento that mom made this morning. Murasakibara immediately agreed to it, which made me giggled. I took out my bento and started to divide the portion.

"Just feed me."

"Huh? Why should I?"

"It's my birthday today." I laughed at his honest answer. "I supposed I will, but just this time!"

Murasakibara gleamed and waited for his turn to eat. When I decided to feed him, he gave a quick kiss on my lips and I was almost speechless.

"Atsushi! People are looking!"

"So what? I'm hungry…"

Sometimes I couldn't help by the fact that Murasakibara doesn't care about his surroundings. He acted as if we owned the place. I refuse to say anything negative as it is his birthday so I tried to stay cool about it.

"Atsushi, I wanted to give you this."

"What is it?"

I opened my bag and gave him the box. I didn't want to look at him for his reaction. I was scared. Murasakibara noticed that immediately. "Is there something wrong with the gift?"

"Huh? Oh, nothing! It's just that…"

Murasakibara opened the box and he saw the oddly-shaped macaroons. Some burnt, some looked just okay and none of them were even shaped like a macaroon.

"I tried to make it perfect but…"

"It is edible, right?" He took one and started eating. I can't tell if the macaroons I made were tasty or otherwise. He remained poker face about it.

"So how was it? It's bad, right? I knew it."

"No, it's good."

"Huh? But look at it, they're burnt."

I teared up. Murasakibara saw my expression and placed his palm on my cheeks. I tried not to sob loudly.

"It's OK if they're not perfect or as pretty as the ones from stores. The macaroons are baked by you, isn't?"

I nodded. "I tried making many batches and the more I made, the worst it gets."

"It didn't matter. I appreciate them. Thank you."

Murasakibara managed to give me a small kiss before he shied away, eating the macaroons. Eventually, my tears stopped flowing and I wiped the wet tears away. Atsushi was still eating those macaroons happily like how he would devour his snacks. Lunch break was almost over. We packed our stuff and went back to our classroom.
