Nyx looked into her mirror, wrapping her scarf and pulling a beanie down onto her head. She looked up and down, smoothing down her coat as her eyes travelled from her face to her skirt and boots. A small sigh escaped her lips and she left her room.
Near silently, Nyx walked her way up to the rooftop. She thought she heard a few creaks in the floorboards, and those surprised her, but from what she could tell there wasn't any stirring from the others downstairs.
She opened the door, feeling a stark difference in temperature between the cold knob and the air. She wasn't wearing gloves or anything, so she could feel the numbing metal before her hands too became numb. Nyx held her grip on the doorknob for a while, not really sure what to expect.
Faintly, maybe it was just her imagination, she heard soft music. She figured it was coming out from a portable amplifier. A small smiled graced her lips at the tune, and she found herself humming along to it as well.
Nyx only heard a small squeak trickle into her ears as she turned the doorknob ever so slowly, and she turned her gaze around the edge of the door. "Hello?" she said quietly. There was a little doubt that anyone could hear her when it was snowing; in the middle of cold and frost, noise just seemed to get swallowed up all around by the drifting snow.
Hearing nothing else but the music, she stepped out into the wintry air and breathed the sharp freshness in. Stepping lightly, she came to the edge of the rooftop and looked at the blackness of the sky and the starkness of the moon above. Its light was milk, pouring across the sky in droves to brighten the darkness.
She sighed a little as a cold breeze came by. After the fight with Erebus, Kanashi and Kurow beat each other so badly after the fight with Erebus ended. Verbally. Turned out Kanashi was really angry at Kurow for being partly responsible for the death of his girlfriend. Which of course, Nyx couldn't blame Kanashi for. It took a long time, along with a whole lot of trash talking. She wasn't really there for most of it, so she couldn't recount it exactly. Maybe someone else could remember it clearly but whoever that was would be a mystery.
Everything else was same as always, which mystified her about that night in particular. An unsubtle click from the door and footsteps alerted Nyx. She turned around to find Minato dressed in a dark blue coat of his own, with a nearly white, grey scarf. As always, pants and boots.
"Hey," Nyx smiled, gazing at Minato who was still approaching her slowly. Minato replied with a smile of his own and he stopped in front of her.
"How long were you waiting?" he asked with a laugh, rubbing the back of his head.
"It wasn't that long," she answered. "But, I don't know about how long that amplifier of yours has been going…" Nyx pointed to it, indicating the small amount of s
now that had built up on it.
"Well… not for that long, I don't think," Minato shrugged. "Um…"
"Yeah?" Nyx asked with a curious expression.
"How's your bruise going?" Minato said shyly.
Nyx's cheeks flushed red, maybe it was both of their imaginations, but her breath was largely visible. "Oh, it's… it's okay," she said quickly, looking down at the ground and rubbing around her neck all the while.
"Really? I might've bitten kinda hard…" Minato mumbled, rolling on his heels back and forth.
"Tch… Minato," Nyx shook her head. "Its fine, I swear."
"Maybe it's because of how you used up some of your power… you're a bit weaker than before," Minato suggested. "I mean, that didn't really happen before."
"I guess so… but I don't really mind… I'm not breaking as many alarm clocks as before," Nyx laughed.
Minato's eyes widened. "You mean you're still breaking them?"
"Well alarm clocks aren't exactly brittle things you know," Nyx pouted. Minato stopped for a moment and just laughed at her reaction, before kissing her cheek.
"Cute as always," Minato smiled as he pulled her into a warm hug, protecting her from the bitter cold around them.
"I'm glad you think so," Nyx smiled back, resting her head on Minato's chest. Under her ear, she could feel his steady heartbeat, and it seemed to reassure her. "Um Minato…"
"What is it?" he asked, running his fingers through Nyx's hair.
Nyx sighed heavily, not able to tell whether her sigh was one that was happy at all from Minato's coaxing touch. "Um… I wanted to tell you about why I got caught… with Erebus and all of that… Before you went to rescue me."
Minato continued holding her close, trying to tell her that it was okay to tell. "What about it?" he asked with a low tone.
"You see… when I was confronted by him I kinda froze up when I was fighting him…" Nyx began. "And it was because of something that he said." Minato nodded ever so slightly. "You know that you aren't going to be here forever, right?" she whimpered, looking up into his eyes to see if he knew what she meant.
"Yeah…" he said finally, albeit with a grimace. "I know…"
"…people still die even if they have something like love, so why is it that people can still stay alive after the people that they love are gone?" Nyx asked.
Minato sighed, and thought about it for a few moments. He tried to remember exactly what it was that gave him strength. And this time he knew. "Nyx… bonds don't stop giving you power, even if the people that you formed them with are gone. I remember back when I made the Universe Arcana, even though the people that I had formed bonds with were farther away from me than before, they still gave me power. They were still with me, that whole time."
She nodded at that. "Come to think of it, I'd really forgotten something like that when I asked you to bring me back to the human world and all…"
Nyx looked up with wonder. "But you know now again, right?" she asked.
"Yeah… I mean, I remembered. You really went all the way for me, giving up something like your immortality for me just so I could come back again," Minato smiled a bit, kissing her forehead.
"I… well of course I would…" Nyx said. "I couldn't just lose you like that…" That is, after Minato had died, she traded most of her godhood in order to bring Minato back. The opposite of Death was life so she had some, to little influence over it. It seemed that the sisters of Fate didn't seem like steering her wrong that time.
Minato chuckled at that. "Thank you," he whispered, pressing his cheek into Nyx's. "Really. Thank you… for helping me remember all of it again and for being with me."
Nyx closed her eyes and smiled at that. "You can't just keep thanking me, you know?" she laughed a little, letting her gaze fall to the ground, finding that their feet were starting to move to the beat of the music. "I should be the one saying all of that thanks…"
"So… I guess you aren't going to bring down the Fall, huh?" Minato teased.
"No," Nyx deadpanned at him. "That would just ruin everything."
"Hehe. Just saying," Minato smiled goofishly. "I love you, Nyx."
"I love you too, Minato," Nyx smiled back.
