Are you gonna bite me? – Steve Rogers

I can't believe I managed to get myself caught; I'm a vampire for Christ's sake! I'm supposed to have stealth and silent moves, but no; I just happen to a clumsy vampire and make myself noticeable to the director of an organisation called SHIELD. I was knocked unconscious by something in a syringe and so far I was glad that my mind had decided to just portray a blank space, but I knew that it wouldn't last for long. The nightmares always came back to haunt me and ride me of much needed sleep, it was especially frustrating when it had been going on for over 3,000 years.

I managed to wake myself up and jerked upright, only to find myself in a small room with a wide open window which was letting the sun in; making me let out a pained cry as the rays hit my extremely sensitive pale skin. A man came running into the room and I tried using his shadow to hide me from the abusive light, squinting slightly as the room was too bright.

"Block the sun!" I hissed, feeling my fangs growing but I reeled them back in. If they didn't know about what I was I wanted to try and keep it that way. He didn't seem to register what I was trying to say so I shot up off the bed and shut myself in the closet where it was cooler and dimmer than the bedroom.

"Ma'am? What are you doing?" the man asked, slipping into the closet after me and not shutting the door.

"Shut the door!" I said, frustrated. This time he complied before turning to face me again, making me look at him expectantly. "Are you gonna tell me why you basically abducted me?"

"Well, um, you weren't cooperating with the team so we had to knock you out." He seemed a little nervous and a small smile fluttered across my face before I stepped closer to him.

"But why do you want me here?" I asked, tilting my head to the side a little as I looked up at him.

"Apparently you are a vampire." He replied, making me laugh at the unbelieving look on his face. "You aren't going to bite me, are you?"

"That would be correct." I sighed, shrugging nonchalantly; making his eyes glimmer with interest as I laughed at his second question. "No, I consume animal blood."

"I know it is rude to ask a woman this, but, how old are you?"

"Would you believe me if I said seventeen?" He shook his head which made me grin, he was smarter than what I first though. "Three thousand, four hundred and seventy two." His eyes snapped open wider as he stared down at me intently.

"You can't be that old! Although to be honest, I'm around ninety six."

"I recognise you!" I gasped, making him jump a little. "You're the super soldier that crashed the plane into the sea in 1945. I worked in the military as a medic, so you may not have ever seen me."

"You were there?" he frowned slightly, making me nod. "How did Peggy cope? Was she alright?" Something sparked in my chest after that came out his mouth, I'd always been jealous of her as she had been the one to capture Steve's heart. I always stayed on the side-lines and watched from afar as they got closer which tore a hole through my heart.

"She moved on, had a family and named her eldest son Steve." I replied truthfully, not wanting to lie to the man that I'd like for nearly seventy years. His expression wavered slightly by the bluntness of my answer and I felt a little guilty. "Sorry, that wasn't very sympathetic." I cringed a little and moved my gaze away from him, shuffling further into the closet to where the shadows were the darkest. "I never really got on with her, but I respected her for the job she did during the remainder of the war. Both of us worked for the secret lines, hacking into enemy communication lines and sending the information back to camp. I was always a little jealous too." I said softly, fiddling with the ends of my long hair.

"Why were you jealous?" I heard the curiosity laced in with his tone and sighed before turning my back to him so I was facing the cornered wall.

"She was the one that caught your eye all those years ago." I whispered. "I could only watch from the side-lines as the man I'd fallen for fell in love with a girl that wasn't me. I'd fallen for you long before you became a super soldier; I loved the way you would take a grenade for the men around you. Your heart was the main reason why I was attracted to you. Once I realised that you would only look at her I vanquished any thoughts of making myself known to you, knowing I never stood a chance. That was the only time I let myself fall in love and I caged myself off from other sources of relationships. My friends had died, my family died when I was human and any man that seeked my heart I turned down."

"I apologise Miss Jones." He said sincerely and I felt the burning in my eyes, signalling that if I was human I would have been crying. "Kendra, I could have had a change of heart. There was one time that I questioned my feelings towards Peggy, because I saw this beautiful girl with chestnut brown hair down to her waist and the most amazing cerulean blue eyes." I stiffened slightly and slowly turned round to face him.

"You saw me? How come I didn't know?" I muttered quietly, looking up at him so my eyes connected with his which were a deep blue. Recognition appeared on his face and he reached out, lightly brushing my hair away from my face.

"Why do you have blonde hair now?"

"I'd dyed it brown just before I joined the military on 1943." I replied softly. "This is my natural hair colour." I realised his hand was still lingering near my face as if he wanted to touch me and see if I was real. I tilted my head so that his palm brushed against my cheek and my dead heart jumped alive again, making me jerk in shock at the now unfamiliar feeling. "Vampires only fall in love once, and if it's mutual they can turn back human. I never believed that until now."

Steve's hand moved down and pressed against the top of my chest, feeling the slightly unsteady beat of my heart through my chest as it regained the rhythm again. His eyes lit up as he looked down at me and he gently pulled me out the closet, into the brightly lit room; making me flinch back out of habit. The sun's rays hit my face and I didn't feel the burning like I used to, but the warmth as it shone through the window pane.

"You look even more beautiful as a human." Steve smiled, stroking my now pink cheeks.
