Once a Soldier Always a Soldier – Steve Rogers/Captain America

I found myself staring down the barrel of a shotgun as I stood in front of Director Nick Fury of SHIELD. I flicked my gaze up to his face and saw his expression was serious, letting me know that he wouldn't hesitate to kill me if he had to.

"This is the last time I'm gonna ask you nicely Miss Pitts, come back to SHIELD. We need someone like you on the team of Avengers."

"Why? Because I've been genetically modified as a super soldier? I'd rather go back to being in the forces sir, they don't use their members for the powers they have." I said, staring calmly at his face instead of the gun inches from my face.

"You are a very skilled woman, Ella. You could do so much more in SHIELD than in the army. You could help a lot more people." I clenched my jaw and averted my gaze away from his, still feeling the gun by my head.

"You know, none of the Avengers know about me right now, I could scream for help and they'd come running to get you away from me with the gun aimed at my head." I remarked. I heard him huff in annoyance and let a small smirk slip onto my face before ducking and sweeping my feet under his, making him fall to the floor.

I took off running as he fired shots after me, dodging them as I didn't slow down. I heard him yelling something before rolling my eyes as Iron Man came flying beside me. I veered away from him as he made a grab for me and released a squeak as I dodged a large green fist from the Hulk. I cursed and tucked my chin into my chest, forcing my legs to go faster.

As I jerked away from an arrow I found myself crashing into a hard body, falling to the ground on top of it. I pushed myself up and saw myself staring into the face of none other than Captain America as he looked up at me. I wavered slightly; he was the only one who would know what I'm going through. He seemed to see this and his expression softened a little as I continued staring down at him.

Someone grabbed the back of my collar and hefted me up off of the Captain, making me release a whoosh as the air escaped from my lungs as I wasn't expecting it. I glanced over to my left and saw it was Fury who looked less than impressed.

"I told you I only ask nicely once Miss Pitts." He said, making me huff. "As from this afternoon you will be resigned from you squadron and assigned on the SHIELD's network." My eyes widened and I felt my chest ache.

"You can't do that!" I squealed. "I won't leave my men out there alone! They need me!" I easily broke free from his grip and looked at him in horror.

"Once a soldier always a soldier sir." I heard from behind me. I looked back and saw the Captain getting back onto his feet before he looked at me. "Steve Rogers ma'am, it's an honour meeting someone else who believes in fighting for their country in the forces." He held his hand out towards me and I shook it, seeing the size difference. The super soldier serum made him larger than he was before, whereas it didn't affect my size at all; leaving me at the most of 5'3.

"Ella Pitts, pleasure to meet you Steve."

"Wait, she isn't a threat? You're just forcing her onto the team? Then why did you want us to go after her?" Black Widow asked, frowning slightly as she looked at the Director; making the others do the same.

"She needs to be contained in an environment where her powers can be tested to their full abilities. She is a super soldier, one of the rare prototypes that worked after the Captain." Fury answered his face firm.

"I never asked for it, I was happy being an ordinary soldier. I was forced into it, someone drugged me and I woke up hours later like this." I spat, angrily indicating down at myself. "I didn't want this; I wish every day that it didn't happen. I just want to be with my men and fight for the country that I love without all this fancy genetic shit in me." I noticed them all looking at me with sympathetic and softened expressions except Fury; he just looked frustrated and angered that I wasn't cooperating.

"None of you move." He ordered at the Avengers before making a gesture that I didn't understand. I felt myself get grabbed from behind and immediately tried kicking and shoving the hands off me. A needle flashed in front of my face and I began panicking. "This would be easier if you cooperated Miss Pitts."

I felt the needle pierce into my neck and shoved everyone off of me with the strength the serum gave me, sending them to the floor on top of each other. I sprinted away in the opposite direction, trying to fight off the wave of dizziness that was forcing itself onto me. The last thing I saw was an unfamiliar man's face as he came running over to me before I fell to the ground unconscious.

I felt myself waking up and tried to move, but found my wrists and ankles were strapped down to something. My eyes snapped open and I looked around the unfamiliar room, pulling at the buckled cuffs that were around me. Somehow I knew I wasn't at SHIELD, someone else had gotten to me before they could.

"Shit." I muttered before seeing the door of the room open and a man walk in with a trolley of medical instruments. "Aww, fuck."

He glanced down at me before going back to whatever was on the tray, inspecting which one to use on me to start with. I began pulling on the restraints again which made him look down at me and I noticed he had some type of metal drill in his hands. My eyes widened and I desperately tugged at the buckles, feeling one of my hands slowly sliding free.

He came closer and held my head down with one hand as he switched the drill on with the other. I spat curses out at him before my wrist broke free and I shoved the heel of my hand against his face, hitting him hard against the nose and making him yell out; reeling backwards slightly. I quickly started yanking at the buckle on my other wrist as he grabbed another syringe. I punched him in the face again before knocking the needle from his fingers, making it smash against the linoleum floor.

I got my other wrist freed and grabbed him round the neck as he came at me again, straining my legs to break free from the ankle braces. His face began turning red as I squeezed his throat and his nails scraped against my arms, leaving little red droplets of blood when he broke skin. The cuffs began to loosen and I pushed him away from me before finally ripping my legs free. His eyes widened as I jumped from the metal table and grabbed one of the many knives from the tray. He pulled out a small handgun and I threw a thin scalpel at him, making it impale him deep in the chest.

I took a glance at him as he slumped to the floor as a dead weight before busting through the room door and down the hall, hearing heavy footsteps running towards the room. I pressed myself into an alcove as they hurried past before making a break for it up the hall, breaking through another door and finding myself outside. I shivered and looked down to find myself clad in only shorts and a tank top with nothing on my feet.

I saw the Avengers arriving at wherever I was before bending backwards as a knife was thrown at me, watching as it flew just above my face. I back flipped and kicked the soldier under the chin on my way back up, snapping his head up and knocking him out. I stabbed the knife I had in my hand into the chest of another before yanking it back out and hitting the handle of it into another's face. I felt my anger rising as more kept coming out and went into full soldier mode: attack to kill.

I let my mind go blank before turning into the killing machine I was made into from the serum. I lost count how many kicks, punches and stabs I made at various different soldiers, but not once did I slow down; if I did I was dead. A large sword was thrusted at me and I grabbed hold of the blade, not caring that it sliced into my palm. I looked the soldier dead in the eyes with a smirk before yanking the sword from his hands and stabbing him with it.

I slit the last man's throat and felt his blood spray onto me before pausing, breathing slightly harder than I was before and looking around to see if I'd be jumped again. My eyes darted up to meet those of Steve Rogers and I let myself relax slightly so that my muscles untensed. His blue eyes stared sadly into my own and I felt myself nearly break under his gaze.

"I'm sorry for what they made you into." He said softly, stepping closer and holding a long dark green/mottled brown trench coat out to me. "I know how you feel about it; I was made the same way although I agreed to it instead of being forced. But I know how drastically it changes your life." I accepted the coat from him and slid it on; finding it almost completely drowned me and realising that it must have been his. "Please come to SHIELD ma'am, I do not want to force you; but I am willing to ask you politely unlike the Director."

I felt my wall crumble and my legs grew weak, making me stumbled slightly on my feet. Steve's eyes widened and he reached out, steadying me by holding my waist. I looked up at him and smiled slightly.

"Once a soldier always a soldier Captain, it'll be a pleasure working for you." I gave him a small salute which made his cheeks turn pink as he chuckled.

"Welcome aboard the Avengers ma'am." He smiled.
