Word Number Ten: Harmonize

"You did a good job today, April." Irma Langinstein smiled as she adjusted her glasses.

"Thanks Irma, but if I really want that part, I'm gonna have to practice for the actual audition." April O'Neil sighed as she walked down the hall.

"Can't you just get someone to practice with you?" Abigail Perri piped up. "I mean, sure it'd have to be a male, but you got friends other than us!"

"Nobody else who I'm comfortable singing around." The redhead stated.

"If your not comfortable about singing in front of other people, what makes you think your cut out for the school play?" Irma crossed her arms as the three came to a halt in front of a sign up sheet posted in the hallway.

Ever since it was first announced over the loudspeaker yesterday morning, Roosevelt High had been abuzz with talk about the school play. This year, they were putting on a grand production of Beauty and The Beast. Abigail was the one who suggested April try out for Belle considering that she had heard her sing a few times, but the girl quickly shot this request down. Irma, who didn't usually side with Abigail on many matters, agreed 100% and the two other girls practically forced April to sing from the script in a storage closet during lunch, so nobody would be around. Sometimes April wondered how on earth they could be so crazy, but now she was stuck. She needed a male partner to practice with so that she would be ready for her audition at the end of the week. Abigail and Irma had already agreed that Casey was not an option, so this just left April feeling more panicked for a partner.

"Here! Sign up!" Abigail smiled, handing her friend the pen attached to the clipboard that the sign up sheet was resting on.

"What if I can't find a partner?" April protested.

"You will, just sign! Before spots fill up!" Irma pushed even though the sheet was only halfway filled out.

The blue eyed beauty grumbled slightly and stepped up, taking the pen after Abigail, who said she wanted to play one of the three sisters who was infatuated with Gaston, or Babette the feather duster. April wanted to be Belle. Even though her two other friends had pushed and pushed, she couldn't help but pine for the part a little, even if she wasn't a big fan of princesses. She just wanted to show that she was more than that quiet girl who sits in the back of class with that weird turtle shell phone case. Once her name was on the list, April turned to the other two.

"Great! Now all you need is a male practice partner." Irma said.

"Don't you want to be in the play, Irma?" April asked.

"Uh, no thank you. I'll just sit and watch as I always do while you and Abigail sing your little hearts out." The redheads shrugged at Irma's comment.

Mere seconds later, the bell rang for last period, and the trio headed separate ways. On the long trip down the hall to her math class, April knew someone was behind her by the distinguishable smell of perfume and hairspray. Most definitely Katherine McCoy. The popular girl had been holding a grudge against April ever since she bested her for class president a few months back, but what could she want now?

"April O'Neil!" She called. "A little birdie told me that you were trying out for Belle!"

"Yeah. It's the truth." April turned towards Katherine.

"What a coincidence! So is yours truly!"

"Wow...what a coincidence." She trailed off.

"But something tells me that your going to try and steal the lead role from me like you did with class president!" Katherine's voice got noticeably lower and more threatening.

"I didn't exactly steal class president, I won, which is y'know...fair." April wasn't surprised by the girl's overall stupidity and arrogance.

"Well whatever! You just listen here, April O'Neil. I'm going to get that lead role and no one, especially not you, is going to stop me! Got it?"

To make Katherine go away sooner so she could get to class on time, April convincingly shook her head up and down numerous times, much to Katherine's delight.

"Good! Now get to class." With this, McCoy turned on her heel and strutted down the hallway, leaving a nauseatingly sweet smell in her wake.

"Honeys, I'm home!" April joked as she walked into the lair, a dash of annoyance in her voice.

"Hey April, Donnie's in his lab." Raphael waved from behind his comic book.

"Tell Leo and Mikey I'll see them soon, ok?"

"Yeah sure, they're training with Splinter."

"Thanks Raph." April said, walking across the room towards the lab's entrance.

"No problem." The red masked turtle called after her, only half listening since he was already back to being engrossed in his comics.

"Donnie!" April hollered upon entering the lab.

"Hey April!" He stopped tightening a screw on Metalhead and flashed his gapped tooth smile. "How was school?"

"Interesting." The redhead said, throwing her backpack on the ground near a table.

"How so?" Donatello inquired, pulling a wrench out of a toolbox.

"Abigail and Irma forced me to sign up for an audition for this year's play."

"What play?"

"Beauty and The Beast. The girls want me to be Belle." April responded.

"That sounds great! Your gonna get to sing!" The inventor exclaimed.

"But I don't want to sing! So many girls at my school are much better than I am so I basically don't stand a single chance against them. Something tells me I should've just told Abigail and Irma "no" and been done with it." The auburn haired girl sighed and leaned against the table where her bag rested at her feet.

"Do you have to sing anything specific?" Don looked up.

"Just a song that's relatively popular now on the charts. I need a male partner to rehearse with but the girls said Casey wasn't an option. Well, I don't know if Casey's that good a signer so maybe that's for the best." April explained.

"Well, I know that I'm not really at the top of the list but, uhh, maybe I could help you rehearse?" Donnie asked awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck.

"You sing?" The girl asked.

"Just a little, mostly to myself when I'm lonely in here..."

"Cool! Thanks Donnie."

Donatello dashed over to his computer and looked up the lyrics to the most popular male/female duet on the charts: Say Something by A Great Big World with Christina Aguilera. Just thinking of singing with April made goosebumps pop up on the turtle's rough green arms. He printed two copies of the lyrics and handed April a sheet, keeping a standing position since that's the proper stance for when you are singing, and he wanted to be great. April glanced at the paper for a moment, and a smile creeped onto her face as she stood up straight, facing her partner.

"Good choice." She smiled.

"It's a good song." Donnie replied as he pulled up a karaoke version on his computer. "Ready?"

"As I'll ever be." An awkward chuckle escaped her lips.

The piano started up, both singers knotted their fingers together nervously, as Donnie took a deep breath.

"Say something I'm giving up on you." A breath. "I'll be the one if you want me to. Anywhere I would've followed you."

A smile from April. He gained confidence, and sang louder, with more power.

"Say something I'm giving up on you!"

April knew that she would have to pick up the next line with Donnie, but he was doing such a great job, and with such a great voice. Feeling that tension knot in her stomach, she took a deep breath, and joined in.

"And I am feeling so small. It was over my head, I know nothing at all." Two breaths. "And I will stumble and fall. I'm still learning to love, just starting to crawl."

It was almost as if their voices were made especially for them to blend together. As they harmonized, and plowed into the chorus, they both lost themselves in each other's voice. They'd never been this free to express their vocals so they ate up any opportunity to impress the other with various riffs and breaks. When the time came for the final chorus, the big finale, both of them forgot that anyone else in the world existed and looked at each other with such sorrow that you would believe they were actually pining for each other, or at least one was. The song ended with a gentle touch of a piano key and both lowered the sheets of paper that they read the lyrics off of. There was a silence as they stood with each other, but then a wide smile crossed April's face as a blush tickled Donatello's cheeks.

"Donnie! That was great!" The girl exclaimed.

"You were perfect, April. Your going to be able to win this part for sure!" Don smiled.

"I never knew you were that good a singer!" April cocked her head to the side.

"Well maybe I do more than just hum sometimes..." This made them both chuckle.

"I can't wait to audition now, I bet bratty Katherine McCoy doesn't have an amazing partner to sing with. Well...with the amount of money she has she probably hired Justin Timberlake or something, but that's beside the point!" April mused.

"Can I come to your audition? I can watch through a skylight or something." The turtle requested.

"Of course you can, I'd be rather sad if you didn't!"

"Tomorrow in the gymnasium right? Your voice is going to be bouncing off the walls!"

"That's the point." The blue eyed beauty she ran over to the turtle and threw her arms around him. "Thank you so much, Donnie. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"No, thank you April. I don't know what I'd do without you." Donatello sighed as he hugged her.

"Well, see you at auditions tomorrow!" The girl bid him a final wave after breaking away and grabbing her things.

"See you..." The purple clad mutant stared, his arms still hanging in the hugging position even through he had nothing to hold.

The turtle boy ran across the rooftops on the cloudy and muggy New York day. Even though it had taken some negotiating with Leo, who was too locked into meditating the other day to hear anything that went on, he was freed from the lair and allowed out to see April.

He would watch her through the back window on the top of the gymnasium and she would be perfect. She would be more than perfect. She would be astounding and she would blow the socks off the judges, her friends, and the bratty Katherine McCoy, who he'd really never even seen before. With a final leap and a steady landing, Donatello was safely on top of the Roosevelt High gym. Peering in the window, he saw April lined up to go next with Irma, Abigail, and Casey Jones pepping her up, but he knew the girl singing "Primadonna Girl" by Marina and The Diamonds must've been the infamous Katherine.

April was way better than her, and if he listened closely, he could hear their conversations. Even over Katherine's squeaky voice.

"Your singing Say Something right?" Abigail inquired.

"You were very good at that song, it's you best bet, April." Irma pushed her glasses up farther onto her nose.

"Would you two stop pressuring her? Red'll do great with whatever the heck she sings." Casey leaned up against his hockey stick and Donnie scrunched up his face from above.

"April O'Neil!" The lady hosting auditions called as Katherine strutted off.

"You'll be great!" Abigail squirmed but Casey and Irma held her back.

Donatello held his breath as April walked up in front of the table. She brushed her hair back, tugged at the bottom of her shirt, rolled up her sleeves, and took many other nervous precautions before starting to introduce herself.

"Hi, I'm April O'Neil and I'll be singing The Scientist by Coldplay. I don't need a male partner for this audition." She announced and Donnie's heart stopped. The scientist was one of his favorite songs ever. Did April know that? Or was this purely coincidental? It couldn't be, he was a scientist.

"Whenever your ready, dear." With a deep breath April began to sing.

"Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry, you don't know how lovely you are." Her eyes closed, she was better that way. "I had to find you, tell you I need you. Tell you I set you apart..."

The entire gym seemed to be enchanted by her sweet voice. Donatello was in awe, he had never heard her quite like this before. She was so vulnerable, but yet so strong at the same time. The turtle felt his heart shake as she sang his favorite line.

"I was just guessing at numbers and figures, pulling the puzzles apart. Questions of science, science and progress-" she looked up into Donnie's eyes upon singing this line. "-do not speak as loud as my heart..."

The scientist himself was lost for words until the end of the song. April humbly looked down once she was finished and put her hands behind her back, she must've thought that she wasn't as good as she really was, but a round of applause echoed around as everyone in the gymnasium except for Katherine McCoy clapped wildly. Even the mutant on the roof put his hands together. Irma was smiling sincerely for the first time in awhile, Casey was wolf whistling, and Abigail was bouncing up and down. April smiled and took a couple bows.

"I think we've found our Beauty!" The auditions woman exclaimed.

"What?!" Katherine spat.

"Really? Oh wow...I can't believe this! Wahoo!" April cheered, embracing her three friends. Donatello jumped around wildly on the roof, his sweet princess had won!

After the auditions were over, and April had managed to break away from her friends and climb up to the roof to see her best friend. They didn't say a word, they just ran into each others gleeful embrace. Despite the dark and gray sky, the two were as happy as can be.

"I knew you could do it..." The turtle broke the silence.

"I can't thank you enough, Donnie. Seeing Katherine's face like that, it was priceless! Even better than when I beat her for president!" April chuckled.

"I have one question." The turtle said while he put the girl on his back to carry her back to the lair. "Why didn't you sing Say Something?"

"Because that's our song." Beauty responded simply.

"Was there any particular reason you sang The Scientist?"

"Yeah. Because that's your song."

The turtle nearly tripped because of the massive amount of feelings he had for this girl were weighing him down. She really did mean it.

"It was beautiful." He whispered.

"Thank you, I'm glad you came."

"Why? So you could have your own personal taxi to carry you home?" Donatello joked.

"Yes! Exactly!" April laughed as they slipped into the sewers.

The two chatted all the way down the tunnels, deciding to tell the boys of her triumph later since they were on patrol at the moment, probably looking for Donnie. They walked into the lab, April throwing her stuff down next to the table like she did the day before.

"So your bothers aren't here?" April smirked.

"Nope." Donnie replied slyly.

"Well? You know what to do!" She strolled over.

"Got it!" The turtle ran over to the computer and pulled up the karaoke for Say Something.

"Here you go." April handed him his lyrics sheet.

"One, two, three!"

I'm very proud of this chapter and I hope you all like it as much as I do! I'm planning, if I get a request with the word play or performance that I can write up April's play for you all! I am still accepting ANY one word requests though. To submit a request just leave a nice reveiw and a word you would like me to write a story from! I would also appreciate it if any Apritello fans who haven't read The Monster to do so! I think it's getting pretty good, but that's just me. Thank you all! ~PurpleKittyFangirl
