(Matt P.O.V)

I watched Mello closely, a smile on my face. When I had first heard him leaving, I worried he would be doing something he'd regret. Turned out he just needed a break from the house. I could understand that. Everyone needed a break from stress. Mello most of all. The poor guy was being run ragged and he was only ten.

I decided now as the moment to make myself known, so I walked up and sat beside him. He gave me a quick look before staring back up at the sky.

"It's beautiful out. Isn't it." He said calmly.

These were the moments I enjoyed most with Mello. When it was just us, and he put down the façade of a tough guy. People always wondered why we were friends. Well… truth be told, I'm not too sure myself. I just knew, from the very moment I'd met the blonde, that we were meant to be friends.

I nodded. "Yeah. It is."

"Reminds me of my mother's sunflower garden. I'd sneak out of the house at night and just lay there. Just watching the sky. I loved it."

I hummed. "I'm more of an indoor guy, myself. But that's the difference between you and me. I usually lived outdoors back in Romania, and you lived indoors in a glorified cage. You like the freedom… I like the comfort."

Mello gave me an incredulous look. "You of all people have come to this conclusion?"

"It makes sense though. And it also explains how we're friends."

"What do you mean?"

I lay down on the grass as I explained. "Mello, we are not the same, you and I. I love video games, you like soccer… erm, football… whatever. I hate confrontation, you're all for it. I'm fine with my place in life, you… are not." I then looked at him. "We're opposites. Yet, opposites attract. Together, we create a force unstoppable by nature. Nothing can pull us apart, and nothing can get in our way. If we aren't together, it just doesn't look right. In short… we need each other." I then grinned at him. "We always will."

He didn't speak for a few minutes. Though, it seemed a whole lot longer than that.

He finally grinned back at me. "Matt,"

I cocked an eyebrow. "Yeah?"

He laid right beside me, facing me. "Don't ever change."

I smiled as I looked back up at the sky. "Wasn't planning on it."

We stayed there for maybe a half hour more. Watching the sky turn pink with the morning sun. We were beginning to fall asleep when we suddenly heard something crash. Almost like a window breaking from the direction of the Wammy house.

Now, not that it was odd that the window got broken – because let's face it, at an orphanage at least one window gets broken from time to time – but the timing of this seemed too obscure. What kid would be up this early, and had already broken a window? That didn't seem right.

We went to investigate right away. We had ran all the way back and found a strange car parked over the hill of the road leading to the orphanage. No one was inside the car, but it hadn't been there before. So why was it here?

We didn't have to wait for long to find out.

Three men started sprinting up the road, carrying something that seemed to be struggling. We had hidden behind the car to watch, and were surprised to see it was Near they were carrying. His hands tied behind his back, mouth gagged, yet he struggled with all his might to be free. Every time he opened his eyes he looked scared out of his wits.

"What are they doing?" I whispered to Mello.

I could already see his fists clenching. "They're abducting him. They know he's in line for L's succession." He turned to me. "Matt, we have to get away from here and tell Watari and L. They'll know how to-"

Darkness. That and a throbbing pain in my head. I hadn't even heard the rest of what Mello had said. All I remember now… was the darkness.

(Near P.O.V)

I had never been more scared in all my life. First, I awoke to the sound of glass being broken, only to find someone tying my hands and gagging me. Then, I was dragged from my room, out the window and carried to a vehicle I knew nothing about. When I was put in the car and buckled in, I heard scuffling behind me, and someone shouting profanities and death threats. I couldn't see it, but I definitely heard struggling from behind the car. The voice that was shouting sounded all too familiar;

Mello.

It wasn't long before they had him subdued and tied up like myself. An unconscious Matt was placed on my right, while the raging blonde was on my left.

The older men looked exhausted from having to control the ten year old ball of rage. One man took it too far with him though.

He put a hand on Mello's cheek. "Don't worry, kid. We'll take good care of you and your friends."

To which the blonde replied by biting his hand with enough force to make it bleed profusely. Even when the man screamed in pain, Mello kept his jaw locked. He even whipped his head from side to side to make the wound deeper.

Finally, he let go and the man cradled his hand as he rushed away from us. "That kid's crazy!"

Mello spat the blood out at the man. "GO FUCK YOURSELF, YOU PERVERTED SHIT!"

Mello was known to swear and scream before, but never at this magnitude. I even cringed when he yelled.

Another man, tall, dark hair, and olive skin strode over. "Get yourself together, Jack. We've got work to do."

"But that little fuck…!"

"Get back to your car! We got what we want, so move it!"

The man with the bloodied hand nodded hurriedly and quickly got to his feet. The new man to speak kneeled down in front of us from the passenger door. "Now then. We're gonna go for a ride. Any attempt on escape will result in a bullet to the head." He emphasized by flashing the pistol in his jacket pocket. "Understood?"

I nodded, but Mello…

"Eat shit."

The man chuckled. "You are a feisty one. Our mole warned us about you. Tell you what, why not sit up front with me, where I can keep an eye on you?"

Mello spat in his face, blood still clinging to some of the saliva. "Go fuck yourself."

The man glared at him, then slammed the car door. He got into the front seat on the driver's side. "I tried to be reasonable. Looks like I'm doing that L character a favour."

"Buddy, you don't even know L!" Mello started up again. "Once L figures out what you've done, he'll make sure your arm gets twisted, and shoved so far up our ass, you'll be waving out your SHITHOLE MOUTH!"

He turned to Mello. "If I hear one more thing come from your mouth…"

"EAT SHIT!"

The man clenched his teeth and started the car. When he began driving down the road – more like speeding – I looked at Mello in fear.

Mello looked back at me, rage unsubdued. I could see in his eyes that he was just as scared.

He put his head atop mine in a sort of comforting hug. "Don't worry. Once L finds out what happened, there'll be hell to pay." He spoke quietly.

I leaned in as close to him as possible. I was still gagged and therefore could not speak, so nuzzled next him, like he'd be the one to save me from this. I guess I believed in the thought. But… then again… I was only seven at the time. Genius or not, you believed those who were older than you could do anything.

The way I believed Mello could do anything.

A/N: The idea came to me in a dream and I decided to add it in. Finally, after about two weeks of writers block. *Grumble*
