Prerogative

''You know, you have to pass through the gate eventually.''

Itachi lifted his head to see his brother crouching on one of the columns.

Unlike any other return home, seeing the village gate today made Itachi anxious. An easy mission him and his brother had completed wasn't bothering him. It was a great change from their usual IOS missions which was making him eager to get home as soon as possible.

Money was the main reason for Hokage to accept missions of high risk level. Neither Kakashi or Tsunade insisted and nobody was obligated to participate. Existence of a team specialized for lethal tasks was convenient and, the way Orochimaru had presented it to his best friend, flawless. At that time, Itachi was grateful to get away from clan's duty, foolishly thinking his father would be satisfied with an important task assigned to him by one of the Sannin. It wasn't enough to hear his oldest son was a first choice to accompany Orochimaru, Fugaku wanted to increase Sasuke's strength and the fastest way was exposing him to the opponents he couldn't defeat easily.

No matter how much Itachi wanted to object to senseless idea, he couldn't. First, because he's never opposed to his father's orders, second because three skilled shinobi would solve mission faster and the most important because Sasuke would think he was not good enough and that's the last thing Itachi wanted.

Orochimaru was aware of brothers' rivalry and didn't even try to explain how pointless it is. He was giving Sasuke more opportunity to prove his strength, instead. Unfortunately, Sasuke was abusing the team's trust because nothing was enough for him. Understanding and reasonable Sasuke would become rash and impulsive, hungry for more power and acknowledgement. Orochimaru understood and he was trying to give Sasuke power. Itachi understood and he was trying not to reveal significant difference in their abilities to avoid pressuring his brother.

Person who didn't understand cared for Sasuke in a way that was making her intolerant of his injuries or constant endangering of his life. Being the medical ninja, Sakura knew well the cause of her fiancé's injuries and that was making her worried and angry. Worried about Sasuke and angry at everyone else, unlike Tsunade who would be worried over everybody and mad only at Orochimaru.

Female Hokage became less worried after Shikamaru'd joined the team. She had to put an end to missions where Orochimaru was making an exhibition of himself, not thinking about the task or the money. He's been claiming that facing skilled opponents was the best and fastest way of improving one's skills and strength. Therefore, he's never hesitated to confront anybody just to test his own outstanding power.

Unwilling to listen to his friend's nagging, Orochimaru was actually protective of Sasuke, in his own way, of course. Despite being a menace, Sannin earned Itachi's trust by taking the most dangerous part, always by himself. Also, if they hadn't been testing their limits during ruthless training, Sasuke's injuries would have been more severe. Enduring extremely dangerous and demanding friendly battles, they were better prepared for well-paid missions. Too bad the trigger for both of Itachi's sparring partners was their ego. Wrong word at the wrong time would make them lose their minds while trying to prove the opposite. Sasuke was abusing Sannin's weak spot to make him angry to attack at nearly full power which he didn't hesitate to demonstrate, at the same time using his silver tongue to imply Itachi has been the strongest among them.

Being the way they were, Shikamaru's demanding job as the chief commander was easier. He didn't need strength to control insanely strong Sannin or greedy for acknowledgement Sasuke. Because of his different kind of duty, Shikamaru rarely participated in their training sessions and, without Uchiha heir around, things would often get nasty. Sasuke could hide wounds from Itachi or their parents, but not from Sakura. She would scold Sasuke for being careless, Fugaku would scold Itachi for not taking care of his brother and Orochimaru had to handle Tsunade's anger, despite whose fault it was.

Right now, Itachi didn't expect lecturing because mission went well and nobody returned injured. Arriving today, Itachi had to make it through only one more day and everything would be over.

''Don't you want to go home and rest?'' Sasuke suggested, now walking on Itachi's right.

''I would like to stay far away from the district, if possible.''

''I understand,'' Sasuke said quickly and they continued walking in silence.

People who were occupied with tomorrow's event almost as much as Itachi were also people he wanted to elude no matter what. He didn't need concern or advice. Not today or months ago.

He could avoid discussing personal matter easily because nobody had the right to pressure him to share his personal problems. Unfortunately, he couldn't escape questioning by the person who taught him everything about his destined life. His father.

''So, Itachi. Hyuuga heiress?''

Itachi didn't reply. He was afraid his voice would let him down and reveal to his father he wasn't ready for this conversation. His fresh relationship needed more time to grow. To develop. To become something Itachi could openly talk about without fear he was jumping to conclusions. Hinata was shy and reserved and, being the way she was, he couldn't conclude what she was thinking. Or feeling.

''How old is she anyway?''

''She attended the same class like Sasuke did.''

''Then she is quite young,'' Fugaku concluded. ''Then again, a woman can never be too young, especially if she is an heiress too.''

Itachi didn't reply. He didn't expect anything less from his father, not now or ever. Fugaku was always explicit when it would come to his high expectations for his older son.

''She is a jounin, right?''

Although the answer had been something his father wanted to hear, Itachi didn't reply. Hyuuga Hinata wasn't a jounin or heiress of her clan. She was a person and Itachi didn't intend to treat her differently.

''How stupid of me! Of course you wouldn't have looked at her if she hadn't been one!''

Itachi wasn't sure if his father's been provoking him on purpose or he was becoming too sensitive whenever Hinata had been the subject. He wasn't his usual self for weeks, ever since that unimaginable first night with her.

He knew Hyuuga Hinata was the heiress of her clan, he just didn't perceive her the way she was. He was intrigued by her unexpected kindness and humble attitude. She wasn't vain or disrespectful, but shy and quiet most of the time in public. He thought the reason for it was the lack of her talent, but she was a skilful kunoichi, in some ways more proficient than her cousin Neji. Itachi also found out her goal was to have her own genin team and that only confirmed his assumption. Hinata was doing her best to get Hokage's permission to entrust her young shinobi. Not only she was an outstanding kunoichi, she wanted to pass on her knowledge to future generations. Selfless, generous, considerate and kind, but also responsible, determined and capable.

''Are you playing with her?''

''I am not, father.''

''I don't care if you are. As long as you are certain she is not playing with you.''

After that conversation, Itachi's been thinking when their relationship would have become official if there hadn't been for his moment of carelessness in front of Hokage's tower. Maybe Hinata's intention wasn't the same as his. Maybe she was too young. Maybe she didn't need one more heir in her life.

Despite being a caring mother, Itachi didn't feel like talking to Mikoto, either. She would be supportive, as always, searching for the real reason for his anxiety that he wasn't able to hide from her whenever being questioned about Hinata. He doubted she gave up on her tactics to make him share his thoughts.

''I've always liked that girl.''

Itachi's mother let him know she was approving of Hinata and, to be completely honest, that wasn't necessary. Hinata was perfection, whether it would come to her duty or private life. Why would she need someone like him? Then again, was there anyone good enough for her?

''Any girl would be lucky to have you.''

Itachi hated his mother's perceptiveness. No matter how much she tried, she wasn't making it easier for him, pointing out everything he's been aware of.

In a shinobi world, he was a good husband material. He knew that better than anyone and he learnt it the hard way. It was impossible to know what the real reason was for any girl's interest in him. It could be because of his reputation, his looks, his position of an heir, his bloodline limit, his extraordinary skills, even money. He was never a person, an ordinary man with his worries and dreams, constantly thinking what would somebody else want him to be. Everybody was like that, men and women, old and young, relative and acquaintances.

''The most important is,'' Mikoto gave him a smile, ''to be with the one who makes you happy, no matter who she is.''

Maybe it would be less complicated if Itachi's fiancée was someone else. A civilian woman. A kunoichi without family background. Someone like Sakura.

Itachi couldn't understand his brother's envy. Or anyone else's. Every other man knew his beloved one's feelings and the real reason for her interest. Itachi didn't. He was the one jealous of his younger brother and his different kind of relationship with Sakura, not because Itachi loved pink hair, but their friendship which turned into a true, selfless affection.

The only problem with women was, when they would get to know Itachi's crowded schedule, tasks and obligations, along with a demanding family, they would run away without having a second thought, aware that kind of life expected them too, in case they get seriously involved.

Unplanned get-together after a successful mission turned into spending time with the most endearing young woman he's ever met.

Hinata was never mentioning his duty, treating him like everyone else or bothering him with anything. She was treating him friendly, being caring and nice. He was feeling ordinary, relaxed and untroubled, having her tiny hand in his gentle clasp, seeing her kind eyes and shy posture.

Was she treating everyone that way? How come that she hadn't been taken years before he met her? It was impossible that her beauty and kindness remained unrecognised!

Or he was the only one she cared about? Was she saving herself for him? Or for somebody else, then he came along? Was she kind to him only because she understood him and was aware of his complicated life, trying to cheer him up and make him forget his worries? Could it be that he's mistaken her polite and friendly behaviour for affection? Why he didn't care for anything while she was with him? Why he didn't care what was the real reason for her interest as long as she was there for him?

''Naruto and Gaara don't need our escort through the village, but we can check what they are doing if you feel like it,'' Sasuke suggested.

''Check on Naruto-kun? I thought you wanted to see a person you are allowed to see.''

''I didn't mean that. He is not suppose to accept a challenge for a friendly fight, the same as me.''

It was useless. No matter where he was or what he was doing, only one person was on his mind. To be completely honest, Hinata was the only person on his mind for the last two weeks. For the last six months. He wasn't sure when she had become so important to him that he couldn't stop thinking of her. Not even for a second.

How naive of him to think his thoughts might get distracted because of a simple mission he'd insisted to take. Maybe it would have been different if he hadn't been surrounded with her former classmates. Or something more than classmates.

Not only Naruto got back home, unlike him, Itachi wasn't allowed to talk to or even see Hinata. And Itachi had so many questions bothering him, including loud blond.

''How great, a clan's wedding! Who is getting married?'' Naruto asked when Sasuke told him to prepare formal wardrobe.

''I told you hundred times already that's Hinata,'' Gaara answered.

''I keep forgetting because she is so young!'' Naruto explained his unnecessary question.

''Exactly. Young and finally over you,'' Gaara tried to provoke Naruto, who shrugged, uninterested in further discussion.

Later that day, Sasuke explained he's been waiting the right time to share that well-known gossip with his brother.

Actually, there didn't exist proper moment to find out your future wife's childhood crush had been Naruto, strong Jinchuuriki, Konoha's hero and future Hokage.

Itachi could have blamed Sasuke for not telling him, but it was Itachi's fault. Hinata's life didn't start when they had met just like it wouldn't end without him in it.

Then again, it all made sense. Hinata could be seen out more often after Naruto had left. Or Itachi's life drastically changed. Naruto's decision to leave Konoha was related to Sasuke's engagement and it all resulted in Sasuke joining IOS. Therefore, person who Itachi couldn't avoid was Sakura, medical kunoichi and Sasuke's fiancée. Spending time at the hospital, many other of Sasuke's friends would visit him. Or comfort Sakura. All in all, Itachi unwillingly met so many shinobi thanks to his younger brother.

''I didn't know the tradition upsets you so much,'' Sasuke said carefully.

''It doesn't upset me,'' Itachi replied as plainly as possible.

''Hinata is getting married and you are the maid of honour?''

Naruto's surprised scream caught the brothers' attention even though there were no signs of the blond anywhere near them. Naruto's remark meant he'd encountered both Hinata and Sakura and now the tradition was upsetting Itachi because it hadn't existed one to forbid talking to your childhood crush a day before one's wedding.

In front of the flower shop, where Naruto was standing next to Gaara, was quite busy. Rearranging flowers, ordering more, carrying dozens of bouquets and flower decorations, everybody were busy. Especially Sakura, who was the maid of honour and in charge of bride's flower preference, and of course Hinata, the most beautiful bride ever, smiling shyly a day before the wedding.

''It was surprising, that's all. Shy and cute Hinata marrying Sasuke's brother.''

Itachi glanced at Sasuke to make sure Naruto had complimented his fiancée. Not only the blond Jinchuuriki was loud, rude and in Sakura's way, he also dared to talk to Hinata about the wedding!

''That didn't seem like you. I thought your husband would become Kiba. Or Shino. Anyone but Uchiha.''

Wonderful. Bug expert and dog lover were better choice than Itachi. Sasuke's best friend obviously didn't have a good opinion about Uchiha clan. Then again, who was he to judge?

''What's with you girls, so you like those gloomy guys? Are you sure you are not under their genjutsu or something?''

One more word and Naruto will regret he got back!

''Well, I'm not here to interfere or judge your choice! If you are happy, then I am happy for you!''

One more step closer to his beautiful fiancée and he won't be able to attend the wedding or anything for the next 72 hours!

''Easy there!''

Although Itachi recognized calming voice along with a hand on his shoulder, concentrated on Naruto, he reacted quickly and impulsively, which made Sasuke activate his sharingan too.

''Are you insane?'' Sasuke hissed. ''In the middle of the street, in the middle of the day?''

Itachi looked away, ashamed, annoyed and angry. And helpless.

''He hugged her,'' older Uchiha explained, trying to regain his composure.

''That's Naruto, that's how he expresses his friendship and care, you have nothing to-''

Sasuke's voice trailed off, seeing his fiancée hugging Naruto. Sakura embracing her best friend. Not the other way around.

Itachi admired Sasuke's calmness, at the same time realising no matter how different the two of them and their relationships were, somehow they bumped into the same obstacle. Naruto.

''Sasuke-kun!''

They both startled hearing female voice behind them.

''When did you get back?'' the blonde girl asked happily. ''Why don't you go and greet Sakura? I bet she missed you!''

''And I bet she missed someone more than me.''

''What happened?'' Ino sighed.

Itachi glanced at Sasuke who didn't seem like he was about to reply.

''Don't tell me you are dramatizing over that friendly hug?''

The blonde was quite sharp, Itachi concluded, silently watching her frowning.

''Sasuke-kun,'' she sighed, ''I hug Shikamaru the same way and Temari didn't bite my head off!''

She startled when Sasuke finally looked at her.

''Do you try to surpass Temari to prove to Shikamaru you are better than her?''

''No.''

''Do you secretly hope they might break up?''

''No.''

''And do you have a crush on Shikamaru?''

''No, but-''

''Then it's not the same, is it?'' Sasuke sounded furious.

Itachi understood his brother's anger. Seeing Naruto, Sakura must have concluded they had got back and, in Itachi's opinion she should have look for her fiancé. Or maybe Sasuke should have greeted her after their arrival. It was complicated situation in which Sasuke decided to make Sakura wait for him. Just like couple of weeks ago, when Sasuke's decision meant significant change in Itachi's life.

Having both sons engaged, Mikoto was the one pulling the strings to set a wedding date. For any of them. Worried their sons were too dedicated to not fail their father's ambition, Mikoto was thrilled they somehow found patient and reasonable girlfriends who agreed to become their wives at some point. So when Itachi got home one night, with his parents expecting him, seeing his mother with the widest smile on her face and hope in her dark eyes, he knew what occurred. He couldn't know what would follow.

''It's your prerogative, as the older one, to decide,'' Fugaku said. ''I'm certain the lack of time doesn't concern you.''

''It concerns me,'' Mikoto smiled encouragingly, ''and everyone in charge of planning a wedding worthy of Uchiha heir. Actually, two heirs.''

''Nobody will object if Sasuke is the first one, since he's engaged longer and-''

''I will object.''

That was the first and only time his younger brother revealed his presence while eavesdropping, first time to interrupt their father and the first time to not seize the opportunity.

''It's settled then!'' Fugaku concluded.

Although Itachi wanted to say something, Mikoto hugged him before he got the chance.

''I can't wait to tell Hinata-chan! We have so much work to do!'' his mother was chirping excitedly.

By choosing to get married second, Sasuke confused Itachi. Itachi thought Sasuke would insist to get the privilege because of his longer relationship with Sakura and Itachi didn't understand until today, when they witnessed Naruto's encounter with Sakura. Sasuke was hiding his fear quite well, but losing his grip in public surprised Itachi. And Sasuke's classmate, who was on Sakura's side.

''Fine, then make a big deal out of it. That's mature,'' Ino rolled her eyes, giving up on comforting Sasuke.

''Call her back!'' Itachi ordered, noticing Ino left their side.

''Why? I don't want her around,'' Sasuke explained.

''Foolish little brother,'' Itachi sighed, appearing before Ino to block the path she had taken.

She was surprised with Itachi invading her personal space, so she stepped back. Itachi couldn't waste more time, so he bowed briefly to Sasuke's classmate, afraid he'd intimidated her.

''Yamanaka,'' he addressed her politely, ''are you busy at the moment?''

''Actually, I am,'' she shrugged. ''I was on my way to see your mother to give her-''

''Sasuke will do it!'' Itachi interrupted. ''He doesn't have anything to do and I need a girl. And you are one.''

''Last time I checked, I was,'' she said carefully.

''I mean, you can share your opinion with us,'' Itachi explained.

''Girls' opinion?''

''That's right.''

''What do you want to know?'' Ino asked impatiently.

''Do you have a date for tomorrow?'' Itachi asked simply.

''Why? Is it obligated? I know it's quite traditional, so I've bought a red dress. I didn't know about the dates.''

''It's not, I was just wondering.''

''As a girl, I think dates shouldn't be obligated. It only makes single women nervous and under pressure.''

''I see,'' Itachi nodded, concluding Ino must have answered similar question already.

''Why would you want to know that today?'' she asked, looking towards the flower shop. ''Don't tell me!''

''What I wanted to know is whether or not laughing and hugging engaged women in public is appropriate, according to you.''

''They are friends and they are acting like ones,'' Ino shrugged.

''Aren't you friends with Naruto-kun and Gaara-sama? If so, maybe they should hang out with you instead of with engaged women who are obviously busy.''

''I can't believe it, but I understand why you need my help,'' Ino smirked. ''Both Hinata and Sakura are unable to leave and are too polite to send Naruto away. Or maybe Gaara-sama?''

''Is he a threat too?'' Itachi faked indifference.

''Anybody is a threat to insecure men and I thought you weren't ones.''

''I haven't said that!'' Itachi defended himself, which made the blonde smirk.

''Of course you haven't,'' Ino laughed. ''It will take me some time, so, Sasuke-kun, would you be so kind?''

She handed Sasuke a small piece of paper.

''Just give it to your mother, she will know what to do with it,'' she explained. ''As soon as possible, of course.''

''What is it?'' Itachi asked.

''It doesn't matter to you,'' Ino replied quickly. ''Can I borrow your kunai?''

''Naruto is not allowed to fight,'' Sasuke warned Ino.

''You should try another way than to challenge him,'' Itachi added.

''Me? Challenge a Jinchuuriki?'' Ino burst out laughing. ''I am flattered you think I would dare to spar with any of them.''

''Why do you need a kunai then?'' Itachi asked bluntly, handing Ino a weapon she had asked.

''It's like you said, Itachi-san,'' Ino was smirking. ''They are both men and I am a girl.''

Itachi's eyes widened in surprise. She was cutting her shirt!

''Is this enough?'' she chuckled when she was done with readjusting her clothes.

Sasuke wasn't looking at Ino, probably expecting something like this, and Itachi wasn't sure what to say to unnecessarily enthusiastic blonde.

''Well?'' she asked again, waving with a kunai.

''Yeah,'' Itachi stammered, afraid Ino would cut more and end up completely naked.

''See?'' she chuckled. ''This is the easiest way to get their attention. Sneaky, but easiest. Here's your kunai.''

''Keep it!'' Itachi said quickly, refusing to look at the blonde who obviously enjoyed this inappropriate situation.

''I knew that staying single must have some benefits!'' Ino chuckled. ''This way I will drag Naruto away and Sakura will be dedicated to rehearsal dinner, and not to your jealousy, Sasuke-kun.''

''Rehearsal dinner,'' Sasuke sighed, being reminded of his responsibility this afternoon.

''How convenient,'' Ino continued, smirking. ''The bride and the groom have the entire afternoon and evening to themselves, with no one bothering them.''

''While the rest of their families go through the wedding itself,'' Sasuke rolled his eyes.

''Don't you think they need to relax before the big day?'' Ino asked and looked at Itachi, who decided to ignore her inexplicable smile and take a hint about trying to relax today.

''Aren't you ready?'' Sasuke asked Ino.

''I am. I will approach them from another direction, to not give away your hiding spot. I can't appear out of nowhere, so it may take couple of minutes,'' she explained.

Despite her lack of humble behaviour, it was a good plan. Itachi wondered if she really was capable of distracting Naruto and Gaara without involving brothers' concern.

''And don't be too obvious,'' Itachi suggested, a bit doubtful about this scheme.

''Never!'' she chuckled. ''See you tomorrow!''

Waiting for Ino to encounter the strange group in front of the flower shop, Uchiha brothers were silently staring at two boys and two girls who were cheerfully chatting, not noticing anybody or anything around them.

First time spying on their fiancées, neither Itachi or Sasuke sensed familiar presence behind them.

''Hey, you two! I haven't seen you in weeks. Weren't you on a mission until today?'' Orochimaru was babbling. ''Why are you here with each other, instead of-'', he pointed at Sakura and Hinata.

''Tradition,'' Itachi muttered under his breath.

''What kind of tradition?'' Sannin asked.

''You know, the one that isn't allowing groom and bride to see each other,'' Sasuke explained.

''I see.''

''By the way, what was the reason for the tradition of that kind?'' Sasuke asked.

''Well, there could be many reasons. For example, if the marriage is arranged, the bride doesn't have the time to escape. Or elope with her lover, which could also be the case.''

''Interesting.''

''Or, in some countries it's a bad luck for wedding couples to meet and discuss anything, because it might lead to a quarrel.''

''It makes sense, I guess.''

''Or to keep the bride pure until the very end.''

''Pure?'' Sasuke repeated.

''Well, you know,'' Sannin stammered, slightly embarrassed, ''innocent.''

''Innocent? You mean virgin?''

''Yeah,'' Orochimaru stared at the ground.

''Oh come on!'' Sasuke laughed. ''Just how old that tradition must be! A thousand years, at least! A virgin, in a shinobi world?''

''You don't have to share your experience with us,'' Itachi said.

''Even you have to agree it's insane and worked only long time ago!''

Mentioning the past times, Sasuke laughed even more.

''That must be the reason you didn't get married!'' he teased considerably older Sannin.

''Sasuke-kun.''

''Well, no woman was left to be innocent because every woman you'd met ended with your perverted friend while you were busy with getting stronger!''

''Sasuke-kun!''

''What?'' Sasuke smirked, prepared for a come back.

''Go to hell,'' Sannin laughed, remaining calm.

''If you had admitted you have no clue about wedding tradition, I wouldn't have brought up this topic,'' Sasuke said, not intending to offend Orochimaru.

''I was guessing, that's all.''

Itachi stayed out of their pointless discussion. He didn't feel obligated to explain he was getting married because he wanted to. Nobody would believe him he never argued with his fiancée and he didn't even think of talking to anybody about private matter Sasuke had laughed about!

''Speaking of your ignorance, are you coming tomorrow?''

''Of course.''

Orochimaru was looking disappointed by that unnecessary question that was revealing Itachi didn't think he would attend an important wedding. Itachi should have known that reputation among Uchiha clan meant a lot to legendary Sannin and, to be completely honest, Itachi had asked it just to change the topic.

''Do you have a date by any chance?'' Sasuke laughed.

''Surprisingly, I do.''

''It's not obligated, you know. You didn't need to pay someone to entertain you.''

''Hilarious,'' Sannin snorted. ''I will spend my time tomorrow comforting Jiraiya because Tsunade decided to break both mine and his heart by going with Kakashi.''

''Since when do you have a heart?'' Sasuke mocked.

''Just because he isn't explicit, doesn't mean he doesn't care!''

Both of them were staring at Itachi, their gaze revealing they didn't have a hunch what caused his overreaction. Itachi's serious face didn't encourage neither of them to ask for an explanation even though his comment could be misunderstood.

''I was just teasing him!'' Sasuke explained.

''I wasn't serious, either!'' Orochimaru added.

Calm on the outside, Itachi couldn't stop thinking about Hinata, her life before they met, and how she felt about somebody, now standing so close to her. Somebody so different from him.

''Have you known Namikaze Minato?'' Itachi turned to Orochimaru.

''I have.''

''Of course, if there hadn't been for Naruto's old man, we would've had male Sannin as Hokage.''

''It wasn't like that.''

''He was probably stronger,'' Sasuke continued. ''Not to mention you wasted your second chance to become the village head after Tsunade-sama accepted the late Hokage's offer.''

''Sasuke-kun.''

''And then Kakashi-sama and Naruto!''

Itachi sighed. No wonder Shikamaru refused to spend more time than necessary with them. They have been acting like teenagers while fighting over nothing.

''Don't mind him. What was he like?'' Itachi asked again.

''Fast? I really don't know what you want me to tell you.''

''What do you want to know about my former sensei?''

Hokage's voice coming from the above made Orochimaru frown.

''Of course you all know he was very strong, he was a Hokage!'' Kakashi said simply.

''We know that. Itachi wants to know if he was handsome!'' Sasuke laughed.

''I mean, if there were many women throwing themselves at him,'' Itachi explained.

''I can't really tell. He had only one on his mind and that was Naruto's mother,'' Kakashi shrugged. ''Why would you want to know that? Are you worried Naruto resembles him, so you are jealous?''

''Of course they are not!'' Orochimaru snapped. ''If the two of them have to worry over blond Jinchuuriki, then what the rest of Konoha's shinobi should do to keep their beloved ones to themselves?''

''Well, it's not everything about the strength. Or looks,'' Kakashi shrugged.

''I don't know. How should I know what women want?'' Orochimaru muttered to himself.

''Why don't you ask a woman for opinion?'' Kakashi suggested.

''We did,'' Sasuke explained, ''and by the look on Ino's face, Naruto resembles his father just like Kazekage.''

''What?'' Orochimaru seemed interested.

''I don't think you should worry. They are not into blond guys,'' Kakashi said simply.

''Really? How can you be so sure?'' Itachi asked.

''What about Kazekage?'' Orochimaru added quickly.

Until Orochimaru mentioned him, Itachi wasn't paying attention to Gaara. And no matter how much more serious and mature he seemed than Naruto, he was also talking to Sakura and Hinata, not showing impatience to leave their company.

''What about him? I am Hokage and they never showed any interest.''

''You are too old!'' Sasuke concluded.

''Really?'' Kakashi glanced at Orochimaru.

''Or maybe because you are not a real sharingan user,'' Sannin frowned.

''So, non blond, who is not a Kage, older than me and not a sharingan user, can't get a younger woman's attention?''

Since Kakashi described Orochimaru, Itachi understood Sannin's glare. Although Orochimaru seemed uninterested in women and men in general, seeking for power only.

''Someone almost perfect like you two has been bugging Ino constantly. Maybe you should give him some tips to make it faster, Sasuke.''

''Who?''

''Your cousin,'' Kakashi shrugged. ''And I doubt he wants to play hard to get like you did.''

''I did not!''

''If you had been stubborn, Sakura would have been engaged to Naruto.''

''Didn't you say they were not into blond guys?'' Orochimaru reminded him.

''She would have given up on you sooner or later,'' Kakashi ignored Orochimaru, provoking Sasuke. ''No girl is that patient.''

''I wasn't playing hard to get, it was just-''

''Right now it doesn't matter. You should inform Shisui it will be tough to get Ino's attention with Kazekage and future Hokage.''

''It appears to me you gave it a thought in a advance,'' Orochimaru said.

''I didn't,'' Kakashi said plainly. ''Look for yourself.''

''Or you need glasses to see that far?'' Sasuke mocked.

''Will you shut up?''

Everybody startled because the question, sounding like an order, didn't come from Orochimaru, but from Itachi. He was really restraining from using harsh tone in any situation, always thinking twice before he spoke. At the moment he needed a distraction from his problem and none of the men around him was helpful. Maybe a woman could solve it, appearing at last.

''Hey there, gorgeous!'' Ino loudly greeted strange group in front of the flower shop.

It looked like she'd said it to Sakura and Hinata and they both smiled after seeing Ino.

''Don't tell me these men are trying to buy you flowers knowing you're both taken?'' Ino asked.

''We were just talking,'' Gaara explained.

''Gaara-sama!'' Ino exclaimed in surprise. ''I didn't recognize you! That must mean the blond is Naruto!''

Naruto and Gaara didn't see the point in Ino's thrill, neither did Hinata and Sakura.

''You both look so different! I bet you work out hard every day, no wonder you have changed so much!''

''They look the same to me,'' Sakura said.

''How can you say that? The change is obvious! Maybe I should try Naruto's training,'' Ino smirked and winked at Gaara.

Itachi was impressed. Not only Ino got their attention, both Naruto and Gaara seemed uncomfortable after hearing Ino's obvious compliments. She managed to praise their looks and their strength with a few words and she was definitely more than just a pretty girl. She was aware of her advantage and offered to use it to help Itachi out and he was very grateful.

''Aren't you running the rehearsal dinner this afternoon?'' Ino asked Sakura.

''So?''

''Don't you need Tsunade-sama and Kakashi-sama to attend too?''

''Of course I do!'' Sakura seemed concerned, now reminded about two easy-going Hokage.

''Then why are you keeping Gaara-sama busy? The sooner he sees Hokage, the sooner you can start rehearsing! Everything has to be perfect tomorrow!''

Before anyone could ask more questions about Ino's unusual behaviour, she took both Gaara and Naruto by the hand.

''There is no time!'' she explained. ''Sakura has work to do, so Hinata doesn't have to worry over tomorrow! Gaara-sama, you should hurry, and Naruto, well, you probably missed ramen!''

Strange group fell apart after Ino reminded them about the lack of time.

''No wonder she seduces men for a living,'' Sasuke concluded.

''She uses her mouth perfectly,'' Kakashi added, sounding like he admired Ino. ''No man is immune to compliments.''

''She left her neck exposed when she whipped her hair,'' Orochimaru shared his opinion quietly.

''So, not the clothes revealing too much?'' Itachi asked.

''Of course not,'' Sasuke grunted. ''Ino is always more naked than dressed.''

''All in all, it seems she doesn't have a thing for you any more,'' Hokage yawned.

''I don't care,'' Sasuke rolled his eyes.

''What?'' Orochimaru and Itachi asked in unison.

''Didn't you know? Sasuke was quite popular while they were all genins. But he was obsessed with power, not showing interest in anyone. And yet he got engaged!''

''It was ages ago,'' Sasuke tried to change the subject.

''I know, but you are still spying on Sakura. You should put more trust in her and Naruto.''

''Nobody asked for your advice, Kakashi,'' Orochimaru frowned.

''Well, you could do something too,'' Kakashi shrugged.

''Wh-what?''

''Well, isn't your situation similar?'' Kakashi asked surprised Orochimaru.

''What situation?'' Sannin demanded.

''Sasuke needed a little encouragement to show his feelings for Sakura, so maybe you-''

''Maybe I what? Encourage Jiraiya to tell Tsunade what he told her thousand times? Have you been drinking?''

''No. You should encourage Tsunade-sama to finally accept the fact she doesn't have to be alone just because you are so-''

Orochimaru's furious glare interrupted Kakashi.

''We are so what?''

''Well, strong Sannin,'' Kakashi finally said.

Itachi doubted Hokage had Sannin's strength on his mind and Sasuke's laughter confirmed he's been thinking the same. Orochimaru's usually short temper became even shorter when it would come to some random person mentioning the obvious.

''I should get going,'' Kakashi announced. ''If Tsunade-sama asks, you didn't see me!''

''We wish we hadn't,'' Orochimaru didn't even try to lower his voice, so Kakashi probably heard him.

''I'm leaving too. I wonder what Ino gave me to take-''

''Does Sakura-chan know about Yamanaka?'' Itachi interrupted Sasuke's leaving.

''There is nothing to know,'' Sasuke sighed.

''If I had known, I would have never asked her to charm anybody, not only your friend,'' Itachi said.

''How come you didn't know two kunoichi fought for your brother?'' Orochimaru asked.

''They didn't fight,'' Sasuke said quickly. ''Ino drew back.''

''Maybe she found somebody better?''

''She didn't, she is single,'' Itachi answered Orochimaru's question.

''It's also possible Sasuke-kun was only a childhood crush,'' Orochimaru concluded.

''Sometimes it lasts forever!''

Itachi could see Sasuke regretted what he'd said. Not every childhood crush ended with a happy relationship.

''We are not talking about female blonde any more, are we?''

''She ran into Sasuke by chance,'' Itachi admitted. ''She will probably reveal everything-''

''She won't,'' Orochimaru interrupted. ''She recognized your concern and did you a favour to calm you down.''

''I am not upset!'' Sasuke protested.

''I am not concerned!'' Itachi added.

''Of course you are not,'' ironic smile crossed Sannin's face.

''If you are so smart and experienced, how come Hokage managed to upset you too?''

''Copy Ninja should mind his own business.''

''Same as you. I am off!''

Sasuke left like he'd said, leaving Itachi alone with Orochimaru. Everything Sannin'd said was implying Itachi's worry was visible on the outside. Then again, his absence during last two weeks maybe brought a change.

''Did something happen while we were away?'' Itachi heard himself asking.

''Nothing that might affect tomorrow's event,'' Orochimaru replied plainly.

''Huh.''

''Of course, there were several complaints due to unusual dress code, but your mother found a solution for that problem,'' he added, probably to assure Itachi everything's been taken care of.

Even if Itachi wanted to ask more, he couldn't because of Sasuke.

''Dress code? I'm sure your dress will be pretty!''

''Sasuke-kun.''

''Fine, be all serious today,'' Sasuke gave up.

''I always try to be serious then you say something like this.''

''Sorry.''

''Until the next time.''

''Yeah.''

''I can't wait,'' Sannin laughed.

''See you both tomorrow,'' Sasuke tapped Itachi's shoulder and left once again.

Before Itachi could think of an excuse to go somewhere he would be alone with his thoughts, he noticed Orochimaru was waiting to say something, now when they were by themselves.

''I don't want Sasuke-kun to pop out from somewhere and interpose,'' Orochimaru said quickly, after Itachi gave him a sign to hurry, ''but I must tell you there's nothing wrong with being worried over tomorrow's event.''

No one interrupted, so Orochimaru could continue.

''If somebody is ready to take over the role meant for him, that's you, Itachi-san. It might take you some time to adapt to a new situation, actually, one of a kind in history! I'm not trying to scare you, but you can't expect everything will go like you planned only because of your effort. You will have greater responsibility along with more authoritative power. One word and you will be able to start a war!''

Itachi forced a smile. He didn't see this coming from Orochimaru, always uninterested and selfish Sannin. He couldn't confess his worry wasn't about his new position he was born to take over some day, but about something he had chosen by himself.

''I don't need to remind you that you won't be alone on that path. Your part will be significant on the outside, but it's not forbidden to ask for advice, especially from someone who will deal with the same and who accepted to be by your side along the way.''

Itachi froze. Was his doubt visible to everyone? Did Sasuke say something somehow?

''She must be special, to her clan and to you. She has been chosen to become an heiress very long time ago and you chose her too.''

He was always flattering when he would see his own gain and Itachi's conceited father loved praising more than anything. This time something was different. Orochimaru, despite his ignorance, had known about Itachi's new position yet he didn't mention it until today. Even when he had, instead of Itachi's rule, he mentioned Hinata by his side.

''Then again, Sasuke-kun was right about me not being a woman expert, so I can't help with whatever is troubling you.''

''Nothing is troubling me!''

''Itachi-san,'' Orochimaru's voice was compassionate, despite his smirk, ''wasn't Sasuke-kun intrigued by ancient tradition and didn't you want to know about late blond Hokage?''

''That doesn't mean anything!''

''Then out of nowhere young blonde woman appeared and took care of your problems. Two of them.''

Lying to legendary Sannin who concluded what has just happened seemed impolite to Itachi, so he's been silent.

''I know it's not much of advice, but if you can't share your problem, then you yourself are the reason for it.''

''That's not it!''

''It doesn't matter because you need to find a solution, especially if you have some unsettled issues. Don't hesitate to do whatever it takes to make everything clear. And speaking of that ancient tradition, if there's no one to witness your actions, they've never happened.''

Orochimaru actually didn't show an interest to find out the problem, but to solve it. Also, he just unintentionally encourage Itachi to overlook traditional rule, warning him to be careful while doing what was supposed to be forbidden.

''Knowing you, even if someone finds out, it wouldn't be the end of the world,'' Sannin bowed briefly before disappearing, leaving Itachi alone on the street.

Itachi has never shared a personal problem with anyone. Then again, until this particular one, none of them were significant enough. This time it was the most complex that he could ever imagine. He wanted to do two things at the same time.

First one was to delay or even cancel tomorrow's wedding. Cancellation was the only solution if his worst suspicion was true.

Itachi was aware he took her life away. Happy, untroubled life. Hinata couldn't hide their relationship was affecting her in a bad way. Without him, she would have been doing missions, she wouldn't have been worried over new duty that was expecting her because of him and she would have led a life without a great burden he had brought her. If there hadn't been for their wedding, she would have become a team leader already, probably adored among all young genins. He was an obstacle to her advancement because nobody wanted to do something against his plans for the future. More important, he was an obstacle to her happiness, making her dependent on him and his decisions.

Second thing he wanted to do was commit himself to spend the rest of his life with Hinata. He's never wanted anybody else and, even if she wasn't feeling the same, he would be able to get through everything with her by his side.

He was born like an Uchiha heir, but not obligated to marry an heiress. His eyes could turn red but they didn't have to see only one woman. He had the right to choose his life without affecting his duty. He was able to decide how to use his abilities as long as his clan was approving his actions. Being an heir wasn't leaving much time for private life, but he could choose who would be the part of it. Life dedicated to duty and his clan, nobody was surprised Hinata had become his fiancée. Many people were disappointed it had taken so much time to get engaged to Hyuuga heiress. Many of them thought she was his obligation, not choice.

With everything happening so fast, he didn't get the chance to ask for her opinion, her desires, her feelings. Part of him was afraid of possible answer and part of him wanted to find out her intentions.

Hinata wasn't the first in his life, but she was the only one making him feel this way.

He was fine until she walked into his life. Perfectly fine. He didn't experience honest concern or selfless support before her. He always thought he had to go through it alone, because nobody was like him. He was feeling alienated from the others and he accepted that kind of life. Nobody could have known him better than another heir. They needed to earn clan's head's trust, clan's members' respect and praising of village jounins. Surrounded by people who admired them and envied them at the same time, it was impossible to have a friend. They were alone on the path obligated for them by their birthright. Itachi thought he was the only lonely heir, with a demanding father, jealous brother and hypocritical clan. He was feeling helpless and sometimes unhappy. He was ready to sacrifice his desires for a greater purpose, to not let his family down and make his clan proud. He was ready to sacrifice his health in order to physically achieve what he had to. He was ready to give up on his private life, handling every task professionally, without doubting superiors' orders. He was leading life without a single free moment for himself.

His determination was ruined by one simple greeting, one honest compliment and one shy smile. His life goal changed because of one perfect kiss and his destiny became sealed because of his honest, but rash and common, but irreversible act. That was the first time his unthinkable action affected another person. Another heiress. Another clan.

Releasing Hinata's tiny palm in public, after reaching for it, would mean he was regretting showing his need for her, that he was ashamed to be with her. And he wasn't.

Nobody could understand him better. She acted like she truly knew him, what's on his mind and in his heart.

Sneaking up into his, soon to be former room to get some rest, while hiding from everybody, would have been perfect place to relax if there hadn't been for an unusual event that took place right there. Two weeks ago and with Hinata on top of him. There was no way to forget their last encounter as a non-married couple.

Although he was glad she'd managed to speak her mind and let him know what she wants, part of him was suspicious of that change out of nowhere.

He wasn't sure of too many things. Why was she in his house in the first place? How did they end up in his room and why was she so persistent? Did she feel obligated to do it? Was she just pretending? Would she have stopped him if something had been wrong?

That unimportant part of their relationship concerned him too much. He didn't know how to treat her because she has never told him. He didn't know what she preferred because she has never revealed her desires. He didn't feel comfortable enough to explore, propose or ask anything. Need for physical contact wasn't primary, now or ever, especially if it was unpleasant.

All he wanted was that she feels comfortable enough to share her thoughts with him, about anything at all. That was the true purpose of any relationship, he wanted to give her support and advice, be her friend and lover, all of it at the same time.

It was driving him crazy. Not her adorable smile, but his inability to speak his mind while he was with her. He wanted to find out the truth, but not scare her away. It seemed impossible.

He didn't dare to think she had forced herself to start it. It was supposed to be an intimate moment, bringing them both the same kind of physical satisfaction. It also meant deeper trust and care, not fulfilling their needs. Or worse, only his need. That's why he insisted on waiting as long as possible, to recognize a sign of her true wish or desire. He didn't have to wait as long as he had anticipated and that confused him. What could have happened? Did she think he expected that before his departure? Did someone know about that completely irrelevant problem and suggested it should be solved?

It couldn't be considered as a problem. It was just a lack of relaxing moments, untroubled days and, as always, too much pressure. He was counting on more time after the wedding, alone and carefree, to truly be with her, doing nothing at all, just be and feel hers. Pleasure he was feeling around her couldn't compare to something physical. Not that he didn't wish for it, it just wasn't crucial or reason to worry. She was the most important. Her desires were more important than his. Because she was the only one who cared and making her happy would mean he succeeded to give her the same she's been giving him.

He was feeling obligated to give her the right to choose him. Again.

There were so many reasons why she had accepted to become Uchiha, but only one reason mattered, only one was worth of tomorrow's wedding.

Waking up every day to see her adorable, but fake smile wasn't something Itachi wished for. Her comforting voice could easily be replaced with a sad one if she wished for a different life. Pretence on the outside was necessary because of the other people, but he didn't want to be like others. He wanted to know the truth. Away from people's expectations, private life of a shinobi should erase memories of cruel battles and innocent victims, caring and loving home should be the most important to protect and your lifelong partner the biggest support and a friend.

Period with her has been too short to prove it to her he cared about her desires and life goals, but it had been long enough to realise he wanted her in his life. He wanted her and couldn't give her up. If there was only a slight chance that she might love him for real, he couldn't let her go. It was selfish, but it couldn't be helped.

Together alone, leading lives different from the lives of others, used to pressure and unreasonably high expectations. Being with her, he didn't feel the need to talk, to explain, to justify his actions, he had a feeling they understand each other in silence. Humble and shy, she was the greatest support he could have. A friend who would never let him down or exploit his title. She was a selfless woman he wished to dedicate his life to because he loved her more than anything.

Patiently waiting until the sunset, so the dark could cover his intentions, Itachi was weighing the gravity of his decision. He couldn't stand the possibility that he'd stolen her the opportunity to be happy. If he was able to take it, he was also the one who could give it back.

He finally gathered courage to make sure if Hinata's decision had been her choice and not her duty.

It was hard to picture his future, happy life without her in it, but this day without her was even harder. Anticipating tomorrow, he was unable to get through the night not knowing Hinata's true feelings. Final move, which meant an end of a dream, his dream, had to be hers. Of course, if she felt the same way as him, which was also possible, she mustn't find out he had doubts.

Luckily, he had an excuse to visit her. He planned to stop by casually, bringing her what she'd left in his room.

Hyuuga mansion was in a complete dark, as expected. Then again, Itachi couldn't sense a motion of any kind. Could it be Hinata wasn't at home, not feeling nervous over tomorrow? Maybe she hadn't arrived yet, after parting with Sakura who was at the Uchiha district at the moment. Maybe Hinata tried to relax and fell asleep in her room. If he wanted to check, he was forced to peek in every single room because he didn't know which one belonged to his fiancée.

He was never invited to Hinata's home. He didn't need to stay for dinner or impress her family. His name only was enough to assure everyone he was perfect. In their parents opinion, their marriage was a dream coming true. Their children would unite two powerful clans and bring harmony among the clan. The two of them will embrace each other's differences and be a fine example for others.

Itachi was aware many people thought the marriage had been arranged and it hurt for so many reasons. Ugly gossips and people's guessing revealed it was expected from him to choose the most suitable marital partner. Loveless marriage, for the sake of his clan and the village, would be finalize tomorrow, despite participants preference.

Worst possible thought crossed Itachi's mind, while he's been trying to explain to himself peace and quiet around Hinata's home. She left her home and the village. Escaped. Eloped.

Before Itachi got the time to create a disturbing image in his mind about Hinata and certain strong shinobi, he saw a faint light coming from one of the rooms on the first floor.

Apparition passed by the window slowly and gracefully, making Itachi stopped breathing after seeing her dark and beautiful locks of hair. Hinata.

Of course she wasn't making noise while being home alone. Of course the lights were off in every single room except the one she'd entered.

Stupid Sasuke! Why did he talk about tradition the entire day and why did he fear Naruto?

Stupid Orochimaru! Why did he have to mention eloping and lovers along with the arranged marriage?

Stupid Kakashi! Why was he praising former Hokage, to whom Naruto resembled so much?

Damn Naruto! Why did he have to be an outstanding shinobi, who Itachi couldn't hate because he was friendly and cheerful, capable and skilful, worthy of Hokage's title?

Stupid tradition, stupid wedding, stupid him.

Itachi took a deep breath, taking all of his self-control not to do anything rash. For what he could see, standing few steps from Hinata's house, she didn't seem anxious or upset. She was walking around the room, carrying something that looked like cooking pots. And frying pan. And vegetables. Could it be she was about to cook?

When he got this far, he thought, it couldn't hurt to make sure everything's in order and Hinata wasn't planning on running away tonight. Why would she do it today, among all days? Then again, maybe she was trying to forget about tomorrow, occupied with cooking.

Itachi got closer to get a better view. Hinata seemed busy, dedicated to make a meal, muttering to herself. Probably a recipe, trying to remember every necessary ingredient. She forgot something and chuckled to herself while fixing the mistake that could have ruined her dinner.

She was looking beautiful. And untroubled, chopping happily something green, checking up the pots that were boiling. Suddenly she opened the oven and, using the oven glove, took a bowl out. Noticing the hot dish wouldn't get cooler fast enough without being exposed to cool air, Hinata looked to the window. And nothing could escape her keen eye.

''Itachi-san!'' she screamed, but remained calm enough to not drop the bowl.

''I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you!'' he apologized.

''Don't get this wrong, but what are you doing here? We are not supposed to-''

''I know, don't worry! Nobody has seen me.''

She smiled at him after putting the baked dish aside, taking off the gloves.

''It doesn't matter. You wouldn't be here without a reason.''

''You are right,'' he admitted, aware it was too late to draw back.

''Maybe you should come inside,'' she proposed, stepping closer to the window.

''It won't take long!'' he said quickly.

''I didn't mean it would! I thought you were feeling awkward talking to me while being outside.''

He probably looked like a total idiot, peeking through a window, while his perfect fiancée wasn't doing anything but cooking. Luckily, he had an excuse to be here. A totally irrelevant excuse, which wasn't related to the real reason for visiting Hinata's house tonight.

He climbed into the kitchen through the window, like she had proposed.

''What is it?'' she asked softly, gazing at him. ''Did something happen during the mission? Or in Suna?''

''No, nothing!'' he responded, although the events after coming back from Suna weren't making him indifferent.

''Something at your home, with Sasuke-kun maybe?'' she asked carefully.

''It's something from the last time.''

''Last time?''

''Last time we met.''

''Oh.''

She wasn't looking at him or smiling any more. Last time was concerning her too. Itachi stuffed his hands into his pockets, trying to think about something different from her possible pretence, pressured intimate contact, restraint to express her opinion and preference, possible fear of stopping him and probable unhappiness, while waking up next to him the day after tomorrow and every day after it.

Itachi slowly pulled his hands out, holding tightly Hinata's possession in his right palm.

''Are these yours?'' he asked, opening his palm.

She covered her mouth in surprise and quiet words could be heard.

Her answer was something so unexpected he felt the need to check if he had heard correctly.

''Temari-san?'' he repeated.

''Yes! Temari-san gifted these to me,'' Hinata explained.

''Then I am glad I brought them back to you.''

She smiled and reached out her hand to take the ribbons from his. Her slender fingers curled around the ribbons slowly, even fearfully, and Itachi took the chance to embrace Hinata's palm.

That caught her unprepared, she didn't understand his need for that simple touch after such a long time he's been avoiding any kind of contact. She wasn't ashamed or uncomfortable, only surprised. He knew what he had to do, it was now or never.

''Hinata-san,'' his gaze met her mesmerizing eyes and she smiled, hearing her name.

Her bright eyes weren't making her look intimidated. Her gentle gaze was revealing who she really was, consoling, caring and kind woman. That's why he had to ask, to finally find out what he's been afraid to know.

Their families were unimportant right now, their clans didn't exist. They were alone and no sound could be heard except Itachi's question, the same one that he's been preparing to ask for too long. It was the simplest question, summarizing all of his fears and her honest answer should make them come true or make them disappear.

The moment after he heard his words out loud, he regretted it, finally accepting the fact he wouldn't get an answer he was wishing to hear so desperately.

''Do you want to cancel the wedding?''
